Glad to see Lugia getting some love. It's my favorite legendary with Lunala being a close second.
Lugia's my favorite since I played Pokemon XD. Plus it's such a unique design
Lugia's always been my fav.
It and the birds of Kanto. :)
Shadow Shield>>>>>>>>Multiscale/Pressure
I love lunala too. Feels so graceful and cute
Same here.
Every legendary of the 'blue' versions (Zekrom aside in favor of Reshiram) is my favorite of their respective regions, with Lugia on top because of 2000.
The modern look plays into the themes of tradition versus modernity that’s so prevalent in Kanto and Johto. Even Ho-Oh represents a more archaic and classical view of a god versus Lugia looking like an Apple product (in the best way possible).
That comparison at the end made me crack the hell up 😂👌
Now that you mention it, you could even argue that lugia’s tower being burned down while ho-oh’s tower still standing could be a metaphor for that in some way. Maybe that’s a stretch, though.
@@melofelo4484 like how the people angrily rejected modern progress to keep up the traditional values?
@@melofelo4484 Wait I thought it was Ho-Oh's tower that got burned down
@@realcupojoe No actually, lugia’s tower got burned down. That’s why it had to move to the seafoam islands
Don't forget that Shadow Lugia looks fricking dope
Oh wow!!! Lugia but dark!! So unique and cool!!!!! 😱😱
@@TheLudicrousLuv This but unironically. It does have some neat/edgy changes like talon feet, more serrated creasts, sharper back fins, and a more bird of prey style beak and head curve.
Because of the second movie (which is my all time favorite) I've always associated Lugia with whales because of the sound that they make under the ocean on that movie, it feels really ominous, ancient and beautiful
Im pretty sure Lugia is like part plesiosaur lol. So not really a whale but ancient marine reptile. Close enough.
Fav pkm movie too. Watched it SO many times.
@@CMiY0argument invalid. It's whale 🐳
It also reminded me of gannets, a bird that can dive in order to hunt fishes.
Well director of the movie designed Lugia since there were no other legendaries beyond the birds and since Game Freak qas inpresed with his work in the first movie they gave him the chance to design the main pokemon for the second wath it didn't know is that it would become the cover pokemon for Silver
Can we also talk about how Aeroblast in the Lugia movie was the coolest freaking Pokemon attack ever? The ring of energy contracting inward as the beam charges up was just SOOOO badass.
I remember that movie, and that guy who used geometry to trap the legendary birds before getting hit by said Aeroblast
Oh my god yes!!! And how it first fires off as several thinner beams then fuse together into one huge beam that even pierces the air around it????? And the sound as it charges up???? Definitely one of the coolest animated moves ever
^^ Kat gets it.
In stadium 2 it's cool.
Whatever the hell smash lugia does it's not.
It’s body also engulfed in a blue aura made of psychic energy when it does aeroblast
Takeshi Shudo, for as wild and troubled a person he was, really knocked it out of the park with Lugia and everything about it
RIP Shudo, and know that your girl is doing just great
Takeshi Shudo was a great artist who tried to do one of the hardest things an artist can do: create a story for children that can communicate adult ideas in a way that isn't patronizing.
And I think he succeeded more than not.
I love pokemon so much this story hit home when I got older frfr❤
Something that really sells the design for me is the Soulsilver title screen, where you see lugia swiftly gliding over the bottom of the sea, leaving a trails of moving sand through sheer speed
Just overall great way of showing how it usually moves around
The finger-like wings are actually one of my favorite design points! Thought that might just be me being a kid speaking
“The song has restored my strength” - Lugia
The song…
This is one of the few times the 3D model looks better than the 2D sprite in my opinion. Just makes it look more powerful and intimidating rather than like it just learned how to fly.
The 3D animation doesn't even look like it's flying, I think the animated 2D sprites from the 5th gen are way better.
The Lugia movie made me fall in love with Lugia. So much nostalgia and sweetness
Same!
I always thought the wing arms were meant to be a compromise between wings and flippers since its meant to live underwater
DYKG has a whole backstory on Lugias creation you might find fascinating.
And it's narrated by a massive legend
@@nardopol0 MASSIVE LEGEND HERE!!!!
Lugia will forever be one of my favorites because of Pokémon 2000 and Lugia's song. It's so iconic, and I still think about it now in my late 20s.
Ho-oh and Lugia just hit different as box legendaries. They’re the only box legends that don’t tie in to some conflict within the games narrative. There’s no war over their power, no summoning them to stop a big evil, nothing like that. It’s just you and this ethereal creature that has deemed you worthy of being in its presence. As much as newer games try to make the stakes as high as possible, there’s something about the tranquility of the encounter with these 2 that just has yet to be matched.
Ah simple times
Also helps that our boy has their own movie
It only took our ho oh how many years to get its own movie...
In a universe where brock misty never existed so yeh...non existing time line, god just why??
Lugia is the only pokemon not designed by gamefreak, it was made by the director of the anime for 2000.
I think you should review it based on the movie's animation where the arms and back are explored way better.
Lugia was designed to be some kind of whale bird god
@@DanielPereira-ey9nt yeah mb 🤦🏻♂️ I loved the story around HER creation, shame on me 😅
Ho-oh is a golden fire bird who's feathers grant wishes
Lugia is a fish.
-that can cause hurricanes when it flies
@@aitusai until a metal claw grabs it, I haven't seen a metal claw grabs Ho-Oh yet.
A fish without the water type.
What kind of fish they have near you???
A fish that shoots pressurised air or (if you've watched the 2000 movie) lasers that go kaboom
I like the finger wings, makes it look more intelligent to me, like it has the capacity to manipulate objects and is more than just an animal
Lugia made the jump to 3D like a champ. But I'll always have a soft spot for the Rainbow Bird
Still think ho oh looks cooler in it's own fabulous flamboyance way lol
Both slaps, i feel the main reason Lugia is more popular is that its design is more unique, Ho-oh is very much a phoenix. Very well designed Phoenix, but still not very innovative
@@weathersama604 very true, Ho-oh had an amazingly menacing sprite with awesome colors but 3d did him dirty by making him a docile looking bird
@@weathersama604 ho-oh is a phoenix, while Lugia is based off of a wyvern (armless dragons) and off of Japanese mythology ryujin. People tend to like badass dragons more than birds, but I do like both now, as a kid Lugia was one of my favourite Pokémon. The other two were Charizard (dragon) and Mewtwo.
Thinking about it now, I didn’t really like Dragonite, thought he was cool but wasn’t a favourite of mine, he looked too childish. I thought Dragonair was cooler. Gyarados too. Imo that’s also the reason why I dislike newer generations of Pokémon designs. They’re so childish, far gone are the days of the water coloured angry looking kaiju inspired Pokémon like Rhydon, Nidoking, Tyranitar, Gyarados, Mewtwo, etc

"Lugia is cooler than Ho-Oh, no debate"
I see that Skyen has once again decided to call me out personally
The creation history for Lugia is so wild and recommend looking it up
Lugia is certainly one of my favorite legendaries. I love it!
Don't forget the blue mark giving it that chunkiness of a highlighted blue tummy. I just wanna give it belly rubs.
But yeah, Lugia might be a case of "Less is more".
Good thing that it's design and theme is so perfectly reflected in it's typing
Lugia's wings look like they'd work great for propelling a creature through the sea. They look like giant paddles.
I will never forget how one of CZcamsrs I've watched as a kid got so fed up with catching Lugia in Leaf Green that when he _did_ manage to catch it, he named it "BBBBBBBB". :D
Lugia really deserves the Water type. It's said to control storms and it lives in the ocean.
if anything it should just be flying. it only goes under water so the hurricanes and wind it makes doesnt happen and kill people
I like to think of him as controlling water, not actually being of water.
Lugia should be Water/Dragon, with Levitate/Pressure as it's ability 1 and 2, and Multiscale as it's hidden ability.
I've always loved Lugia both for their amazing design and for their silly giant hands, they're truly a Legendary that would give best hugs while also still being able to serve out the world's mightiest backhand if necessary.
I swear for a moment I thought I read " Luigi is so freaken cool, even with his silly arms" 😂
To each their own, but I’m surprised that people often prefer Lugia to Ho-Oh. I think the majesty of Ho-Oh’s wings and ornaments and color scheme strikes a great balance between glorious myth and chicken god. Lugia is hype, though
I think lugia is as over rayed as charizard sadly... I'll always pick ho oh even just to be different, tho I do like it
I think the reason Lugia has funny flap-flap hands is that I remember hearing about Pokémon's design philosophy involving something goofy to sort of offset the coolness factor. I don't remember the specifics, but I remember reading something along the lines of "yeah we could make something super cool and without flaw but that's not what Pokémon is about". I imagine this is why Lucario looks like its wearing shorts, and why Greninja wears its tongue as a scarf. Probably a similar thing going on with Lugia's silly giant hands.
Lugia looks like it swims in the air, which makes the guardian of the sea thing make a bit more sense, actual wings would probably not be ideal for traveling in water
One of my favorite moments in any pokemon game was stumbling upon lugia in the new pokemon snap. It's in a secret deep ocean cave, and absolutely massive. I heard it breathing before I saw it, then I turned and saw it looming over me and I think it's the only time in my life a pokemon has given me chills
"Lugia is cooler than Ho-oh"
I will not tolerate such slander.
My first exposure to Pokemon was Pokemon 2000 so Lugia just has a permanent seat in my favorite Pokemon list.
Pokemon's current models haven't been kind to it but the coolness breaks through anyway!
Lugia is definitely one of the coolest water types out there
Love it😂
Yes indeed Lugia is a water-type and is one of the coolest water Pokémon out there because it is definitely water-type and is very cool 😋
Bro with Lugia: the finger designs look weird
Bro with Kyogre: the finger designs imply intelligence which is really cool
Special shoutout to the Shadow version of the design that premiered in XD: Gale of Darkness for just being a really cool inverse color scheme of the original, while also adding in features like the red scouter eye. Honestly most of my love and adoration for Lugia is because of that form in particular and the memories I have from playing Gale.
Pokemon really likes giving it's grand dragon designs beer bellies. No shade to it, but it's definitely a recurring choice.
So that they'd be cuter because they're just chubby enough to be appealing in a similar way to cats imo.
Ngl I find Ho-oh cooler, Lugia is fine but I think the way Ho-oh ties in with the beasts as well as its more intricate design is just more appealing to me
I actually love the big hands lol, I genuinely find them intimidating 😭 it feels like he could pick you up and wring you like a towel
This dude: lugia is so sleek wow
Mr 1 ups: categorizes lugia under old Mon signature of gronk belly
His arms looking like that is a little goofy because it makes him look more human like, but it does make sense considering he swims he probably needs those arms for that and flying the fingers being there though seems more like someone really liked the design and went with it
I think it's the chunky wings that makes it look fit for the ocean. Like a penguin.
Literally my favorite legendary. It got an updated model and animations in SV and its slimmed down a teeny bit and has some strong definition in its shoulders and muscle structure. Its hands are also less chunky and more flat.
And if you stand idle for long enough in lets go mode it will land next to you and settle down and go to sleep, its wings wrapped protectively around its trainer.
It also has the classic Silver/Soul Silver swimming animation in Synchro mode.
idk I think the hands help to sell it as an underwater creature. Big paddles
I actually really like the fingers. Its feels like "my hands are so large i just push down and fly"
People always argue over it being a water type, but I think it should be part dragon type, since eastern dragons (even if it doesn't look like a traditional one) were already known for being sea guardians and control over the wind and storms, it could easily come off as a dragon/flying type
Honestly the Wings makes sense if you remember there for both flying AND swimming!
There's so much to say about lugia. :O I think its universally the best designed pokemon. Movie 2 top pokemon movie, lugias song is top melodies... its somehow the perfect combination of _cool_ , _beautiful_ and _comfy_
I think the finger wings are more to look like flippers along the lines of a seal or manatee
I think in a lot of cases, which legendary pokemon ends up popular is going to be based on who got to be the focus of a movie. Ho ho might look cool and have a nice story behind it, but that is nothing compared to the sheer mystique and presence that pokemon 2000 gave Lugia.
I didn't like the second movie sadly , it was possibly the worst for me... (it didn't seem to have a very well thought out plot to me for whatever reason? Ash is vacationing, there's also an evil man at this very point and time conveniently stealing all the birds, Ash is the hero conveniently in some festival, the world is ending, Ash saves the day, hooray. Oh and lugua is there.
I like Ash...
This just felt like a long episode to me. Even the legendary birds didn't get to shine. They were sort of just fighting...lugua does next ti nothing, he can't do anything without Ash...also he didn't even need a silver wing... Ash is sort of just conveniently shoe horned into being the hero again...
I mean I feel like the next movie 8s so much more connect able, on an emotional level... lugia is a so called God, yet can do next to nothing? At least the pokemon collecter had a bit of back story... that an obsession with a mew card made him become a maniac...
Oh and there also the girl foisting herself on Ash so there's thar. (She has a crush on him?)
And the part where Ash nearly dies, as usual by doing something reckless by throwing himself into the sea and misty is upset...that's about it?
Lugia is the Pokemon that made me learn more about type advantages because I didn't know about Psychic, Poison and difference between Rock and Ground.
Im even more satisfied that Lugia wasn't originally created by Gamefreak
Care to explain?
@@marcoasturias8520 There is explain video on CZcams of Lugia's Origin. Before the passing of the original writer, He drew Lugia final concept For the Pokemon movie 2000.
He also designed it to be a maternal pokemon
@@SpikeThePorcupine23 *maternal
@@adenosine2electricboogaloo647 Awesome. I go ahead and correct it here error
The arm wing things doooont work for me, ho-oh is infinitely cooler
Oh man I dig these shorts, i would really like to see one done on kyurem (cause he’s my favourite) or the Tao trio in general
hell yeah lugia is my favorite legendary ever and i think its design is so good no other legendary has come even close to being as cool imo
You are spot on, one word you are missing with 'contemporary' and 'modern' is 'alien'. In 2000ish especially the Grey and purple body type that is not typical fur/feather is and was so badass. I think you covered all these feelings quite well.
When I watched Pokemon 2000 with my Nanna as a kid in the cinema I thought 'Lugias Song' was the most beautiful song I'd ever heard for that time, Lugia then became my favourite legendary and I wanted to learn the flute / ocarina for a time just for that song, though I never did.
Easily my favorite Legendary, ever since I played Silver on the GameBoy Color. Its sheer presence in the second movie, the raw coolness of Aeroblast, its status as "The Great Wall" of competitive Ubers... Lugia can't be topped.
Yvetal and lugia coming to hug each other
Me as a kid... Lugia.
Me as a teen and adult... HO-OH.
Lugia has been my favorite legendary since he appeared in GSC. He was literally the dragon I doodled in my notebook.
Pokemon 2000 movie was amazing. The portrayal of Lugia was a masterpiece. The aeroblast Lugia did after being captured and coming up out of the ice water 🤌🏼🔥
Watching soul silver intro and it showing the low poly 3d Lugia is ALWAYS HEAT. No one can tell me otherwise
Lugia was legit an original Anime Mon that was Specifically designed for Pokemon 2000/Power of one.
there was some kind of background drama going on around with Lugia as apparently it was supposed to be female but some other dude decided to depict it as male
but yeah Lugia is a weird distinct Pokemon, and it is one of my favorites when it comes to legendaries, but Rayquaza holds the throne of my top Favorite
There's a very impressive origami luggage I've seen floating around the internet, and it's recognizable as lugia. Lucia's design feels like it does the most with the least amount of details in a good way!
I think Ho-oh was the more vibrant and interesting lore wise. Lugia has it’s anime backstory, but that’s literally all the lore it has. I do like to think it’s evolutionarily linked to the latias/latios twin however. The designs look similar to me. I think it’s the head shape combined with the water affiliation while being psychic type.
I just hate that the protector of the sea isn’t a FEAKING WATER TYPE
Fun fact: Lugia is currently the only Pokémon explicitly stated to have been created for the anime, being for its movie, and was meant to be an anime exclusive Pokémon before Gamefreak picked it up late into Gold & Silver’s development because they liked it so much. Though it’s presented as a more masculine creature (at least in the English dub), it was meant to evoke a more feminine maternal feeling. It’s also referred to as “Pokémon X” in some media, notably the anime and XD Gale of Darkness, because it’s original design had an X pattern on its stomach instead of being all one color.
Honestly the wing arms are one of my favorite parts about Lugia. Like this guy has hands, he can grab you and shake you!
But also it’s just such a standout detail to me that adds to the sort of aquatic feeling. Like if those aquatic dinosaurs were able to hop out of water and take off flying.
Oh yeah. The guardian of the sea that's psy/fly. Good old days...
I like to think Lugias made of super condensed feathers like penguins, but they actually act like flight feathers, and still keeps her warm in deeper colder waters where Lugia supposed to mainly reside, giving it that very smooth shiny look, and if it is penguin like feathers it would explain its massive wing(?)span
I wish they could find a way to replicate his look in the movie Pokemon 2000. Regardless, his simplistic and elegant design are some of the reasons Luigi’s is my favorite Pokemon
I think this man needs a little lesson on how Lugia came to be
Lugia will always and forever be my all time favorite Legendary Pokémon!
It’s the movies that take Lugia to the top. It put in that work in Pokémon 2000 and in that movie it gave Hoopa that work. Crazy it can’t do those things in the games though 😂😭
There's also Shadow Lugia from XD: Gale of Darkness. It takes the elegant and simple appeal and with just a change of the color scheme turns it into a downright menace of a Pokemon. The dark purple representing the shadowy aura of the "irreversible" shadow process and closed heart. The striking white for the belly and spines on its back make it stand out more fiercely. And the piercing red eyes that will terrify anything they gaze over, let alone lock on.
It's a brilliant, simple and amazingly bad ass design. Lugia has been one of my favorite legendaries since they came out, and holds sentimental value to me as well.
Ho-oh is literally the representation of the sun perfectly done in a bird with a lot of detail and overall looks badass
Lugia is just a fat white bird with big chunky hands
I love how Lugia looks like it could be three different types, you could argue dragon, water, and flying how they ended up making it a psychic type and not water I’ll never know
I actually like Ho-Oh and wish it got a lil more love in the anime 😫
i would argue that Lugia looking like a kid trying to fly makes it more cool
it's flapping it's arms in a fruitless attempt to fly, by all means it shouldn't be flying, *but it is*
Lugia makes a vague show of the physical requirements necessary for flight, but it's just a show
I was trying to pinpoint why exactly Lugia is so cool to me and you saying "it looks like a dragon I'd doodle in my notebook or imagine going on adventures on as a kid" summarises it perfectly. Lugia is absolutely a childhood imaginary friend.
Lugia Supremacy
Lets not forget how cool the pokemon movie made Lugia, escpacally when it dove into into the water.
Favourite legendary, ever! Lugia looks too damn cool. And the 2000 movie was and still is one of my favourite things from Pokémon ever.
Lucia’s appeals comes from rose tinted glasses. We all watched Pokémon the movie 2000 as kids. Lugia was so awesome there and it’s design is still great now. I hope it gets some sort of new form in the eventual legends johto game (that I feel is fairly possible).
Never forget the fact that Lugia was likely designed drunk.
Funfact: Lugia made for the movie.
What I find cool is that he was designed by Game Freak, but was created by the anime's head writer at the time solely for the 2nd film. Like nowadays, Like it's quite fascinating how much of an influence the anime had on the franchise back then compared to now.
Lugia is the Macbook to Ho-oh's Windows PC. (Let the pointless fighting begin)
I can’t wait in 5 years once you finally get to gen 5. Cobalion is my favorite Pokémon I hope he does well.
He is the best boy, and nobody will say otherwise
Yes, Lugia is awesome!
Oh, we are nearing a point where Skyen can start doing Hoenn reviews. I’m looking forward to the Treecko fam episode!
They realized Lugia was the cool one and gave him an epic Shadow Pokemon recolor for Pokemon XD.
Other than missing the water type, its just perfect.
I swear a long time ago, in the earlier years of the internet and Pokemon in the west, there were rumors and "leaked images" i saw that said Lapras evolved into Lugia. I can't find any proof, and I have tried, but i recall the image of Lugia original card with Lapras stamped like any pokemon with an evolution on the top left part of the card.
