Would I buy a John Deere 2025r AGAIN? [after 9 years of owning one]

  • I try and be honest and answer the question would I buy a John Deere 2025r today in 2022. In the video, I try and answer questions about how it works when using a Tarter 5' tiller, a Frontier 4' box blade, the lifting capacity of the front end loader, mowing the lawn on hills with the 62D drive over belly mower. Does it work well with a post-hole digger from Tractor Supply?
If you are on the fence about this tractor I believe this review will answer the questions you have without any BS.
The biggest problem we have is we live on LOTS of hills and for most things above the tractor is a little underpowered when trying to do those activities on hills.

I watch a ton of tractor videos, because I just bought a house on 30 acres and I could really ise one, but know hardly anything about them. I found your video as I was looking for more information on the 2025r. Yours was the first video I've seen where it didn't sound like a sales pitch. I love the honesty, my friend. I subscribed and hope to see more content from you in the future.

Thank you for the review. Like you, I bought a 1025r in 2018 when I knew nothing about tractors. I looked at both the 2025r and 1025r and felt more comfortable on the 1025r. The 2025r seemed high and narrow and tipsy. I think its a good machine, but I agree with all those who say, make sure to get the wheel spacers, tires filled and wheel weights. Man it makes the machine feel entirely different! I ended up trading my 1025r setup for a NEW 2038r machine. The extra HP, lift with the MSL is a game changer! I put a lot of research into this new one before I bought it. Got all the add-ons I wanted and would ever need because this one would likely be the last one I would buy. Not a payment I want to have forever! There are so many options out there and it is hard to choose whats right for you. I encourage you to watch all the videos you can and write down what your needs are and apply that list to the size and model machine that you can afford and better suits your needs.
I agree, that 25hp engine is a little small and is easily maxed out doing work around the house. It was for me anyway. Felt like I was asking all she had with many of the tasks I was doing around the house. The 38hp, wow - what a difference! So I can only imagine what a larger 3 series with a 46hp engine would be like. But it's a lot of money. Easier to defend I guess when you have a business need for it, or a large property to manage.
    Good luck!

I've owned a 2025R for 2 years now and I can concur with his experience. It's not a great mower as it rips up the lawn on sharp turns and it's bigger than typical riding mowers) when the box blade is full it stops the tractor, the post hole digger is touch and go and if it's stuck it's tough to get unstuck, and on hills in high gear it's struggles. That being said, I still really like it once you know it's limitations which is the fact it's 25 hp and only 2,000 lbs. The back hoe is great for small projects, digging holes for trees, trenches, etc. The loader is great and replaces a wheel barrow. And all the other attachments work but due to power/weight it takes some practice to be effective with them.

when pulling up hill put some weight in the loader bucket and use the 4 wheel drive!!! I mow with a 1025R pulling a 60 inch mower and have taken off 10 inches of grass and have never killed it off yet! Just have to slow down a little, no big hurry because you are just sitting!!

Over the years I have had a 2305, 2520, 4120, and now back to a 2025r. I think the biggest issue is over the years your needs can change drastically. I appreciate the size and weight of the 2025r for what it is. Having the mid range on the transmission would help. The tractor does what it can but I probably never should have traded off the 2520. I am now considering trading the 2025r in for a 2038r. I have a track loader for heavy work and a larger tractor for field work.

I’ve had the 2025R for a year. I looked at a lot of CZcams before ordering. I really wanted a 40hp type machine. But based on budget and garage size I got this one. I got the dealer to install 2in bora spacers and beat juice in the tires for stability. I also got the self leveling loader. I can lift a tote full of stove wood. It is a machine with low power. But I can live with that.

All the above. R4 tires are terrible for snow and the turfs are not the best on mud. The me hybrid radials seem to be just right for both. Not that your going to want to pay for new tires. Just saying if you go to bigger tractor think about ordering them and the weights. Even a bigger tractor needs the weight. Good video. Also agree with the mower. Thanks for the comment. I would probably stick with a 1000 series unless you plan to get a bigger 2 series for the horse power. Don't get a 2025r because it is a larger/heavier frame but the same horse power which the net effect gives you less tractor. I bought it because i thought i would be more comfortable and regretting not going bigger every time i was on it. I bought a new 2025 in 2020. I live on a steep hill I use a 7 foot blade to pull rock back up the hill I don’t experience the problems that he has. Maybe because mine is newer. I also use a 6 foot tiller to plow food plots for deer works great. Overall I do not experience the problems he has maybe because it’s new and maybe because of user error. Going to be very hard to go Deere again. 2013 2025R. It was an OKAY machine. So many little issues! Backhoe was junk! Mower was JUNK! Major differential failure. Did it serve it's purpose? Heck yes. Was it work 32k? Not even close! My next machine will be a L3901 or 02! Never again will I go with these residential grade machines. They aren't worth it! In JD go, 3 series and up! In Kubota, L3301 or higher! (although the L2501 is pretty impressive). Oh, Kubota has a great 84 month .99% interest deal! John deere needs to improve quality vs. price IMHO.
VERY IMPORTANT TO UNDERSTAND! JOHN DEERE pushes the 1 and 2 series! The jump to the 3 series is INSANE! NUTS! In Kubota, the L series jump from 25hp or 33, 39 isn't nearly as bad!
In fact, a BASE MODEL L2501 is so much better built, so much bigger, than the the 2025R or even the 2038R (new larger frame), not sure who goes Green anymore. JD seems to lost their way!

Great review! I went from a 1025 to a 2021 2025R because of ground clearance. I love my new 2025. That said the 1025 was paid for and I did end up back in a payment so that kind of sucked. I don’t have the hill issue so I can’t speak to that. I am much happier with the 2025. My property is not big enough for even a true 2 series which is why I did not go that way. I did find a very low hour used 2038 and it was just to large. While shopping I could have gotten a 3025 for exactly the same money. My issue there was as you said it was likely going to be under powered and was really to big. I agree about the power as you pointed out. I just adapt my use to the tool. For me I just love being out on my tractor so taking a little longer is kind of a benefit. I do use a 3 point counter weight and have fluid filled tires. Really helps with the traction and tippy issue. 2025 is a major improvement over the 1025 with the larger tires and more fluid ballast. Good luck as you sort this out! I will be interested to see where you end up.

So our question for ourselves is keep the 1025r that is paid for and get a grasshopper 900d for a larger portion of the yard, or trade the 1025 r in for a bigger unit. I have to use low as well as I have some steep hills and on my sand mound septic is steep at probably 60-70 degrees or so. It mows great for me and as good as the mower it replaced. I have the 4ft tarter and have had no issues, mainly got it for tilling and making it easier to dig with the bucket to rear blade to level the yard and try and get water to run the way I want off the property.

Here in Iowa a dump truck of rock is about 14 tons and I have probably moved 25 truck loads of rock and another 15 loads of dirt. I just take a smaller bite and keep the bucket as low to the ground as possible when driving. I don't think the 2025r gains anything over the 1000 series but if you were going to go with a larger hp 2 series that would make the difference. thanks for the comment

@@WoodwardAcres I really appreciate the response. I ended up moving up to a 2032. I purchased it a few days ago and if all goes well it should be delivered this week. I can use some larger implements with it than I could have with the 2025 and it has 6 more horsepower. I test drove both tractors and they let me play in the dirt with them. The 32 felt a little more robust. It's still probably not the optimal tractor for what I'll end up using it for but it is about as much as I was willing to spend right now and it should get the job done. I added the 270B backhoe and I'm looking at land planes so I can take care of my private road and driveway. I'll end up using it in the winter to move snow banks and may even add the plow or a snow blower attachment to it.

Hi! I do not have the tires filled but I typically hook up the 5’ tarter tiller for rear ballast. I believe that weighs in the neighborhood of 650lbs. Thanks and let me know if you have anymore questions

I would highly recommend getting the proper ballest to use the loader in your deere loader manule before discrediting stability and traction of any tractor frame size or platform. In your case due to your slopes and hill and driveway you really need all the stability and weight you can get.
      My Recommendation:
      1. Load rear tires with rimgurad at a bare minimum Most dealers won't even sell you a tractor anymore without loaded rear tires.
      2. Get wheel weights
      3. Get a Heavey hitch double row weight bracket or ballest box Do the calculations and make sure you have the recommended amount of ballast on the 3 point arms According to your loader manual, when lifting heavy loads.
      4. BORA Rear wheel spacers 2"
Once you've done all those things see how the tractor performs it should be much more difficult to lose traction. The entire platform will be more stable and you shouldn't have the back end lifting up when picking up anything the loader can pick up.
In regards to snow removal R4 industrial tires are the worst in snowy icy slushy conditions. The solution is either replace those with a better tire for snow or chains,... and/or you could see what good works tractors did with his R4 tires he bought a grover and put some grooves in his R4 tires don't know how much this actually helped.
If you still aren't pleased with the platform if you're sticking with John Deere sounds like you'd want to look at a minimum of a 3039R. I would skip the 3033r. Due to your complaint of getting tasks done quickly and not having to slow down to wait for the tractor to recover from certain ground engaging attchments or tools that require a lot of engine horsepower and PTO horsepower.
All this being said if you have owned your 2025r tractor for 9 years you said you only have a couple 100 hours on it, You have to ask yourself is it worth the extra cost to go to the next frame size. Then all the added expenses for every single attachment you get, the larger the tractor the wider you go everything costs more. Maintenance, attachments, Implements. As it stands now you haven't done what John Deere recommends in the loader manule to properly use the front loader on your current tractor. So don't expect to get a 3 or 4 series tractor and try to lift something if you don't have proper ballast you're still going to have the same issues on a larger scale. Ballast is of utmost importance in regards to any equipment but especially tractors. I don't mean to come off harsh here just being a realist and giving you as much information as possible so that you can have a informed decision for your next purchase or however you want to move forward. Keep up the good videos. 👍
      Just my 2 cents
      Thanks

I had a 1025r, i traded it for a 2025R. Both tractors have the same engine and transmission. 2025R is about 300 pounds heavier which means less power. 2025R was intended to run 4 foot implements just like the 2025R. I just traded for a 2032R. It isnt very impressive. It runs 5 foot implements-brushog, tiller, finish mower but it's a fairly weak tractor. In the future I'm gonna try a Kioti. John Deere used to build great tractors and implements but not anymore! Just my 2 cents.

      @WoodwardAcres  Před 2 lety

Sorry but I wouldn’t. I have a post hole digger too and while it dug down the lift capacity wasn’t strong enough to lift the auger out. To be effective you have to lift it almost every 3-5 inches of digging. It beats a manual digger but it isn’t right.

I started looking into the 1 series at first and figured it's okay. Then I looked into the 2 series and realized it's not much better than a 1 series because trying to stay out of a tractor with REGIN. But lately I've really been eying the 3 series and that seems like the way to go. I know most home owners want to stay away from the higher HP tractors with REGIN but the 3 series with the 25 HP seems like a pretty good balance. It also stays in the compact series of a tractor but with a bigger drivers station. Plus it accepts the same implements as your 2 series. Just saying, it might be worth your time looking into it.

Sorry, while I respect your perspective, as an owner of a 2025r, I personally love this machine. I have hills, forest and LOTS of rocks! With a backhoe and loader, I have moved tons of rock, downed trees, stumps, mulch and loam. She never let me down.
I do admit, my dream was a 3033r with factory cab, but financial reality intervened. Still, I have come to love and respect my machine😊!

To add to the confusion. The new 2025R has less loader capacity than the older generation and a limited height 3 point hitch!
I have a 1025R and it cant pull itself up my hills in high gear either.

The only thing I regret about the 2025 is that I didnt buy it first. I wasted a year with the 1025 before upgrading If I had a taller building and an extra $10k I would have prefered the 2032 but for the extra few dollars the 2025 is more bang for the buck.

There's only 250 pounds of difference between the 1025r and the 2025r. Personally? I think you have had a problem with your injectors, your transmission, your fuel management software or a line problem. You shouldn't be having that degree of difficulty. I weigh 330, and I certainly don't.

You know what man I cannot agree more with you like whether it's a Ford truck or a Dodge truck that's what I've always said go and find somebody that's had it for 5 to 10 years and then ask that owner if they would want to buy it again after everything cuz the tractor I bought I've had it now I'm not going to say the brand I want to be partial it's not a John Deere but I would mine's actually been damn good

And how the hell does the twice as big, 25 HP, 3 range hydro, air conditioned, Kioti CK2610 do anything? If this little 2025R is such an underpowered turd?
