- Following a stop-start 2022 campaign, a busy off-season for the Tigers has media outlets buzzing about a potential return to the top four this season. The arrivals of Tim Taranto and Jacob Hopper on 7 year deals from GWS have provided the team with much needed midfield reinforcements.
So after their engine room stuttered for much of last year, have Richmond now fixed their midfield woes and why did they even need to in the first place?

2 really important rule changes have massively affected their ability to defend and intercept. 6,6,6 has prevented them playing a loose defender against the centre clearance(usually Vlaustin/ Grimes). Also the Stand rule has significantly changed where they can direct and force kicks around the ground towards their intercept players. If you watch footage from the premiership years, they’d man the mark like a crazy person.
Definitely! thanks for adding this in. Think I can recall seeing somewhere that Richmond averaged to most non 6-6-6 starting formations the year before it was introduced.
I think the draft capital to land Hopper and Tarranto is also offset by the fact they had 5 picks in the first 30 of the 2021 draft and Gibcus, Sonsie and Clarke have already debuted and showed some promise. Dusty and Bolton playing more forward is a scary prospect with Lynch, Riewoldt, Cumberland, Rioli and Cotchin already in the mix. The real question will be if the backline can hold up - but if Balta can settle back there, more games into Gibcus and Short and Baker maybe both spending more time back there, they should still have plenty of talent you'd reckon

As a fan of a rebuilding team I find it rather disturbing how easy it is for the good teams to get the talent. Last year's trade period was enough to make your eyes water. First round pick Bowes with a free first rounder because his club couldn't pay for him only for the reigning premier to be able to pay the same amount over about double the time. A million dollar a season AA ruckman getting a massive chunk of his paycheck covered at a team bursting at the seems with skillful players (and likely salary cap). Port get a #1 pick who has been called a generational talent after (yes last season they shit the bed) a minor premiereship and a second place, 1 year after he's drafted to a side that's finished; last, last and second last and hasn't played finals since 2017. GWS have lost top end players every season to a team that won 3 premierships in 4 seasons and the Cats who have dominated finals for over a decade... Free agency was ment to favour the weak teams with cash but it has in actuality favoured clubs that can promise a flag. Weak teams pay through the nose to keep pretty good players while the stronger ones waltz the best in and somehow get the numbers to work. 10 teams have won flags in the last 23 years. Dynasties are only becoming more common. If we want an even comp something needs a tweek

To build on this maybe what players they should keep as their core and who they should get rid of. I was a firm believer that all of the trading they were doing the last 5 years was three years too early. Should have got three years of high draft picks after Andy McGrath. Total over-estimate of ability (lack of leadership in management and hence leadership explosion this off season).
He needs to resign. AFL backed hack of a coach who held on to old philosophies too long at North, such as...crowd fav...kick it long to the tall guy and let the little guys grubber.

Could you do a deep dive on a single game, and can it be North beating the Tiges last year despite half the scoring shots, and a far less talented list. You mentioned the game in the video anyway, in this, but I'd love a quarter by quarter analysis in this style.
We ran over them, played a solid game despite horseshit umpiring, and somehow Cam Zurhaar came up with the goods at the death. lol, weren't much else to it.

I think if tigers can beat Carlton round 1 by more than 20 points, a carlton that will be so ready for a flag push more than ever especially after the end to their season last year, if we can beat them by alot we are on, tigers 2023
If you could have gotten one of those guys as a free agent, it might make more sense. But giving up so much draft capital, basically exiting 2 drafts in a row, is a really high risk play.
It is, but not when you're not really gonna be that high in the draft (assuming you make top 8) and youd be trying to draft the players youve traded for with those picks instead. In theory its a high risk, but in reality, not so much imo
@@sov839 They didn't just trade out one selection though, they traded out 2 highish picks for both of them. Tigers supporters need to ask themselves if they would give up 2 Gibcus and 2 Sonsie for Taranto and Hopper. Because that is basically what they did.
@@tb7667you’re banking on the fact that those draft picks end up being 2 Gibcus and 2 Sonsie. They very well could be 2 Riley Collier-Dawkins. They were better off going after the proven talent given that their stars only have one run left in them.
