Is The Pyro's Phlogistinator OVERPOWERED? - TF2

  • The Pyro's Phlogistinator is one of the most controversial weapons in Team Fortress 2 (TF2). Many players consider it to be overpowered, but some players consider it to be underpowered or even useless. In this Team Fortress 2 (TF2) video, I'll share my thoughts and opinions about the Pyro's Phlogistinator, why I think it's a badly designed flamethrower, and some explanations regarding why the weapon is so hated within the TF2 community.
The Phlogistinator performs exceptionally well against weak enemies and uncoordinated teams. However, it's very bad against coordinated teams or experienced players. In addition, it's sometimes incredibly hard to be effective with the Phlogistinator as it's hard to reach enemies without using your airblast to safely close the distance.
You can surprise enemies with the Phlogistinator from time to time, but many TF2 players would fall victim to other flamethrowers as well. I consider the Pyro's Phlogistinator to be similar to other things like sticky traps and crit rockets. Any good Pyro will be far more effective with the stock flamethrower or the Degreaser because they will have access to the airblast, which is Pyro's most important ability and in-game mechanic.

The phlog was the first pyro weapon I unlocked. After I read the description, I never touched it. Never played a round with phlog and never will. I’m not very good at airblast, but the one time I do deflect a rocket, saving our heavy, or extinguish a team mate about to die, I feel happy. Like you said, pyro without airblast isn’t truly pyro.

The most well rounded review of this weapon so far. There's only a few things I would have added or changed.
Sorry for the text wall, but in it you'll see why this weapon actually has some meaning for me
    - A little story and general feedback
When I started this game, I could not learn to airblast for shite, even when I got proper network settings for it. I ended up settling with the phlog, flare gun, detonator, dragon's fury, and axtinguisher - delighting in burst damage, knowing I was missing out on airblast, but not being too worried about it, until I actually started learning it like three months ago. You're pretty much got it all down, right down to the stunted development I had at one time - but still, I don't think it went that poorly. Let's get into that.
The Phlogistinator is a snowballing weapon, but just like the Kunai and the Eyelander, this by itself isn't a bad thing. It teaches new players the very important lesson of consequence, of knowing when to keep rolling to make use of the advantage they've built up, and when to stop in order to retain enough for a followup push. I could have just kept using the stock flamethrower to wm1, but the phlog wanted me to hang back and time my crits. It was one of the elements of this game that got me to pay actual attention to the flow of mine and the enemy's team and when they were moving in and out, aka the basics of gamesense. While it's true that the phlog can stunt you, this is merely a part of its opportunities.
A nearly perfect comparison is the Cloak & Dagger for Spy. It's easily the most powerful watch he has if the spy wants to tryhard for those truly tricky picks. It lets him survive unfortunate encounters if he takes the moment to think and pause for as long as he needs to, but "as long as he needs to" is both the gift and the curse of the C&D - if you, baby spy, don't decide to keep moving and keep getting those picks, the C&D will very generously let you waste your life standing still. By comparison the invis watch is weaker in that you lack this ability, but with that weakness it teaches the spy that important drive - to keep moving and getting those picks. The C&D is the perfect followup, the perfect unlock, a sequel to the Invis that presents a higher ability and a trap to match it. It's the true test if the Spy has learnt his lesson from the stock Invis and if he knows to keep moving - if he didn't, then he falls prey to the ability to stand still forever, and gets nothing done; but if he did learn, then the Cloak and Dagger becomes far more valuable in his eyes and he knows exactly how it can aid him.
The Phlog is by no means a better sequel to the flamethrowers but you get the idea. In the exact same way the Phlog can teach a pyro timing, but at the same time pyros that abandon reason and run in blind can be benefitted by it, and encouraged to keep doing the same thing. But just like with the C&D, if I grew out of the trap of standing still and started using its trick only when I needed to, then any pyro as nooby as me can just as easily learn to slow down the wm1 and to instead learn some elementary gamesense via the phlog.
After that, of course, I picked up the stock flamethrower and am learning to airblast. But, unorthodox as my journey through Pyro might be, that Phlog step was still there and it helped by giving me a footing to stand on as I approach this game through Pyro lol
All this is to say snowball weapons in general get too bad a reputation and this video is no exception, but I don't blame you for it - I just wish the thought was closer to the mind, easier to think of, than it is. I'm guessing it's not very common for people to see the upsides in such designs and how they can turn out to be a pretty straightforward aid to new players that haven't a damn clue what they're doing in the chaos of this game, an aid for specifically learning and improving, as you put it. The problems with snowball weapons stem from their extensions and tweaks that may allow them to do too much, and the SS is one hell of an extension that can push the phlog beyond all reason
    - Loadout notes
Phlog and scorch isn't the "enough to be effective" loadout - it's the overkill loadout when you want nothing but crits. It's disgusting how well this works, and you're completely right in thinking most people plain don't realise just how much the scorch shit aids the phlog pyro of their nightmares - it's the foundation, not the mere sidekick in the slaughter.
Phlog and detonator is to me the perfectly balanced baseline for effective phlog usage with a decent speed of filling the meter and the mobility to back it up, without being ridiculous. Compared to the SS it's like using only the black box, or only the conch, but not both at the same time. This is how much a flame based secondary should be able to contribute to the phlog, not any more
I feel like you really missed out on phlog and flare gun. While it's not a meter builder like its two superiors, the flare gun is the second most or even the most fun way to use the phlog, depending on how much you can do with the detonator. Running in for endless flare combos and being rewarded not just with the sweet 90 but with some of that charge meter is a quest-style playstyle like very few others in this game and definitely worth a shot. You may be charging in nigh defenceless without your airblast, but when it works...ooh!. It's like the Big Earner - flimsy but totally nutty. If you want bonus flare - bonus flair? - points for even more extra effort and danger - try combos from the volcano fragment to the flare gun in close quarter maps like goldrush or dustbowl.
All in all, good video, spot on almost everywhere

      @Pirateer5  Před 3 lety +7

Amazing writeup, will reference some of these points in the upcoming Offensive Pyro guide (Phlog/Dragons Fury playstyle and weapon guide)
I would say that the flare gun just isn't a good option since it's slow and inconsistent compared to the detonator/scorch shot, and offers no mobility like the detonator, or fast charge speed like the scorch shot
Will playtest flare gun + Phlog over the next couple days and post my findings and thoughts as part of the Offensive Pyro guide

@@Pirateer5 I'd love it if you did bring some attention, especially to how the phlog is actually helpful lol
Flare gun is definitely not the best option, but it's one of the most fun, is what I'm saying. Don't try it expecting to pubstomp - instead try it while expecting to get neat flare kills that you can now top off (follow up) with a nice slice of mmmph'd cleanup of the enemy team.
Man, I don't pay as much attention as I wish. I'm pretty sure the flare and its crits are fire, as I'm pr sure the vacc fire res counters them, but you should definitely check before you say it, I don't trust myself here

I seen this combo, but there is few problems with it: it works only on unaware, unrevved heavy or revved but low skill heavy, other classes just don't require 2 axtinguisher hit or can blast you or themselves away. And If heavy is already on fire initial pushback from scorch shot is increased and there high chance that he will be pushed away from second blast and follow up axtinguisher hit, and good unrevved heavies will just jump right before first axt hit to damage surf away.

Pybros use the man melter with the phlog. Because it can be alt clicked to put out teammates. You save the crits to counter pushes against the engineers. It also doesn't use ammo which allows you to save the ammo boxes for the engineer. It is very much a viable choice but is made for an entirely different play style.
It's not the offense pyro or even full defense pyro. It's the counter push version. The more aggressive defense pyro.

Phlog players are so much like spies. Only works vs complete newbies, easily killed (just shoot at it lol), but the one time it manages to kill you it's still quite frustrating. And honestly I don't know how the weapon can be fixed - like as you said - the airblast is what makes pyro, pyro.
I really love the scorch tho, simply because the amount of dings I get from it. They can make the scorch deal zero burn damage and I would still use it. Tho recently I'm trying to learn the det because of your video on it, and det jumping is so fun I might use it as my go-to once I'm better at it.

    my suggestions:
phlogistintor: increase the mmph needed to get the crits and make it so airblast relies on crits and eats into the supply, airblast takes 100 built up fire damage and it requires 400 fire damage to fully build mmph
this should be complimented with scorch shot being HEAVILY nerfed so nobody uses it the secondary as a primary, encouraging learning of how to use the flamethrower and other weapons instead of just cheaping
manmelter: instead of just fire, the manmelter should be able to absorb all debuffs and there needs to be a better que for being ready to fire

Granted I believe Pyros best role is the defensive role I do feel with the phlog it opens that door for players to be more aggressive similar to the play style of a scout!

Hello Pirateer I want to share some Phlogistinator tips with you phlog should be used like backburner but you have 100% crits when the enemy team pushes you come from the behind and use your crits and when the enemy team is coming from a corner get a stock uber and kill thier push to set them back by 3 min. Yes when I see a phlogistinator pyro he dies in 2 seconds but when he comes from behind with a stock uber becuase medic and pyro were hidding my whole push is dead so I think phlogistinator is not a bad weapon it just chages your playstyle. My normal loudout for pyro is Degreaser, Scorch Shot/Panic Attack, Powerjack. If you have a good team with phlog and the enemy team has to come out of a corner then pholg will be good but if you are using phlog like anyother weapon then you are dead but most of the time enemy pyros have to get in cover to use right click taunt but most players like watch out for the phlog pyro behind the rock so it end of the day if you have to make a new sub class for pyro a new phlogistinator sub classs will make pyro a spy-pyro but ya phlog is a bad weapon if you kill the whole enemy team every one will focus on you so a bad weapon. I highly agree with the point of how people hate Pyro as a whole just because of Scorch Shot and Phlog Pyro's. So many Pyro's put lots of time into learning how to combo, reflect and Detonator jump, but then people act like all Pyro players are braindead because of some random Scorch Shot Phlog Pyro's on dustbowl.

  • @sweetiecandy4885

If they added an overheat mechanic where holding M1 eventually severely reduced your damage, meaning you'd have to strategize and properly flank more instead of just holding M1 and walking around hoping to get kills maybe that'd make it less frustrating to play against since it would require the pyro to think and in some cases even back out if they held M1 too much and their weapon now tickles enemies due to overheating.
As for airblast, I think it would be fair if the weapon had a "zap" with an increased ammo cost similar to the old short circuit where it destroys projectiles infront of you instead of reflecting them, it would still be much worse than the normal airblast but would allow pyros to atleast use M2 to protect themselves and their teammates.
Also yeah definitely make any damage types charge up the "Mmmph" instead of just fire damage. Oh and make it take a bit more damage to charge up.

Manmelter not viable? It's my preferred phlog secondary and I do very well with it. It's so, so easy to farm easy crits to the point that many times, most of the shots you take are crits. You can extinguish your medic and the rest of your team and gain health back in the process. And it's fun to nail a sniper with a long distance crit. All you require is a pyro on the other team. And when is there not one on the kinds of maps the phlog is good on?
Such an underrated weapon. And you can always point out that you aren't using the scorch.

I feel like the Scorch Shot could be given the Equalizer treatment and divided into the bouncing flare and the knockback aspects on separate weapons.
Obviously, Scorch Shot could be reduced to a knockback-centric flare, and lose the explosive radius.
Maybe there could be a new flare gun, where the flare bounces off the initial target, then lands a distance behind them, potentially setting someone else on fire and dealing minicrit damage if it hits someone directly.
I dunno, I like the bounce, but the explosive part is absolute nonsense.

the phlog is okay, i mean crits on pyro is insane but giving up any defensive or support ability with the pyro aka removing air blast just kind of makes you a glass canon of sorts like yeah that phlog pyro over there can do some damage but he can just be dealt with at log range by any solider, sniper, demo, heavy, engy nests etc . if you take him out at long to mid range or heck just out damage him at close range he is kind of useless and has no choice but to just charge mindlessly at your enemy, but the thing that makes the phlog a bit OP at times is his secondary because some secondary's work really, and one in particular works a bit to well like the man melter and gas passer or any of the flare guns especially the det work well with the phlog since the man meleter allows the phlog pyro to still support his team and the gas passer can be charged easily by the phlogs high damage and the flare guns do a decent amount of damage and charge the phlog pretty fast. But the scorch shot THE FRICKING SCORCH SHOT this weapon has ruined any sort of balance the phlog has had UGH i am a pyro main and even i hate this weapon frick the scorch shot ( oh and i am writing this before i watch the video btw)

I play pyro. Phlog is overpowered. I literally have no need to aim unlike with my degreaser+flare combos. You just farm phlog like a dipshit and taunt behind cover so you don't get instantly killed during the vulnerability time after the taunt. More often than not, you will have an uber medic willing to pocket you for free points and assists. And even if you don't, you will score more kills with the least amount of effort with phlog than any other weapon and that is a fact.

Coming from the Dustbowl cult, Phlog is incredibly powerful due to the many small and enclosed areas, which becomes even more apparent when you have a pocket medic who is dedicated to ubering the phlog at all times. An uber phlog in most maps can be avoided at times, but on Dustbowl, the only ways you really can go is forwsrd or backwards. Without dedicated counter ubers on airblast pyros, a holiday punch, or the loose cannon, a phlog can easily wipe 8+ people in half a second as well as creating this non-passable wall that pushes the enemy team back to spawn.

Actually, Phlog takes skill. Other than w+m1, with phlog you should get better at using crits when enemies least expect you, when people are in groups. If you are caught taunting consider yourself dead. But if you're skilled enough, you can dodge headshots, reacting fast enough to people ready to kill you. So its not entirely w+m1, i know w+m1 sucks.

It probably needs a rework to buff it somehow and make it more viable while also reducing the amount of cheap deaths the enemy team feels.

Phlog is broken. If you stop firing a moment before the buff stops you can collecy 'mmmph' from your crits like for example 2:50. It can even fill up your whole meter again.
EDIT: maybe more accurate to say that you need to start firing once the meter seemingly turns gray. You get extra crits after you run out of 'mmmph' and not holding fire when the meter runs out clears the condition of these extra crit flames of not gaining 'mmmph'.

With the phlog you really need to play around not having airblast, because airblast is just so good. The phlog lends itself to tight and chokey maps so well because it's very easy to wipe away half the enemy team and run back around a corner, which is probably a large reason as to why it's so hated and oppressive. I'm a support pyro at heart, I love airblast and always run the homewrecker, but the feeling you get when turning a corner on dustbowl with your crits active into an unprepared team is hard to replicate with anything else in the game.
