  • From HRE 220, the first known recorded performance of Callas' amazing Violetta. While not as clear as the BJR excerpts I have previously posted, I still find this preferable to the CD versions I've heard.
    Maria Callas: Violetta
    Cesare Valletti: Alfredo Germont
    Giuseppe Taddei: Giorgio Germont
    Cristina Giro'n: Flora Bervoix
    Gilberto Cerda: Il barone Douphol
    Ignacio Ruffino: Il dottor Grenvill
    Luz Maria Farfan: Annina
    Carlos Sagarminaga: Gastone
    Francisco Alonso: Il marchese d'Obigny
Oliviero de Fabritiis conducts the Orquesta del Palacio de Bella Artes.
    Performed live 17 July, 1951.

A stunning performance from La Davina. Taddei was excellent, such breathtaking tones. Valletti was superb. De Fabritiis conducted with a deft touch. Such a joy to hear this performance. Thanks for the post, CallasFan. L204C25V7.8K/:-)

From a purely technical vocal standpoint this is some of Callas' best singing. That Sempre Libera is phenomenal!

Very nice performance of La Traviata.Nicely sung by everybody.Taddei (who plays Alfredo's father Giorgio) sung with Callas a couple of days before this performance in Aïda , Callas played Aïda , Taddei played her father Amonasro.

Her voice knew no boundaries back here. She did not have limitations and for me this Violetta is more illuminating and multifaceted than later versions. The ease which she sang allowed her the flexibility to yes show the sadness and tragedy of Violetta but also the CHARM. Her later versions lack charm imo.

I 100% agree. Whenever you have no vocal limitations at all and your voice is this heavy and GIGANTIC naturally; She was able to completely focus on expression and character rather than having enough stamina for the next high note as she did in her later Traviatas.

chosentenore yea totally agree. I mean I don’t think that’s the case with her with every recording of every role, and her later Traviatas definitely have many amazing nuances that this one does have.. BUT the overall believability of this Violeta for me is greater.

She was never as expressive in La traviata as she was at La scala in 1955. Visconti hailed that performance as "Callas' 9th symphony".

@@NLidar Ugh looking back at this comment I made 11 months ago I kind of disagree with myself now. I thin I was mostly feeling this way about the first act party at the time. But recently I agree with you and have been really into the 1955 Traviata. Especially in the last act. You feel such a completeness of that whole production and it must have been an experience to witness. But what can I say all of her performances have good qualities.

@@hodgrix This is what I love about Callas - so many facets to explore over time. My personal favorite moment from the 1955 performance is Act II's 2nd tableau - the party at Floria's. That exchange between di Stefano and Callas when she falsely confesses to loving another man is unparalleled in it's electricity. Lava pouring out of the stage...
