  • Blue Skies to Black Umbrellas.
Twelve Driven Australians. One Big City.
    Tim Minchin.
Young Australian Achiever of the Year 2011 and Perrier Award Winning Comedian -- and all round great guy.
Created by film-makers David McLagan and Brad Lawson, Blue Skies to Black Umbrellas examines the diverse experiences of twelve unique, highly driven Australians in pursuit of their dreams in London.
In a series of candid interviews conducted between 2007 and 2010, the film-makers explore the personal stories behind the diaspora and ask what it is about London that captures imaginations -- and holds them -- despite all the obvious difficulties. (To say nothing about the weather!)
The films also examine the notion of "Australianness" and ask how important this complex mindset has been in helping break down social barriers and achieve lofty goals.
Often surprising, sometimes controversial, Blue Skies to Black Umbrellas brings into focus a whole new breed of intelligent Australian, determined to reach the very top -- in arguably the world's toughest, most competitive city. And helps put to bed the stereotypical "Earls Court Aussie" once and for all.
The twelve films feature: Tim Minchin, Perrier Award Winning Comedian; Lyell Strambi, COO, Virgin Atlantic Airlines; Darryn Lyons, "Mr Paparazzi", Chairman, Big Pictures; Michael Lynch, CEO Southbank Centre, London; Meredith Hooper, Polar Scientist and Author; Ryan Heath, Social Commentator and Political Speechwriter; Kristina Dryza, Futurist; Nikki Gemmell, Broadcaster and Author; Eugenie Harvey, Social Campaigner; Paul O'Donnell, Entrepreneur; Brian Clarke, Founder, Aussie Rules UK and Lisbeth Savill, Entertainment Lawyer.

I love Tim Minchin so much. He never ceases to inspire me!! I really loved his point about how America has lost its connection with its past culture, and that's entirely true. It makes me sad, really. I'm very lucky to have my moms half of the family be from England, so I grew up with that culture being very heavily integrated into my life.

Some might see this as just fandom, a practice I usually avoid, but I'm beginning to see the Tim as a deep thinker. He seems have a clear mind. His performances are fun, but the stories and monolog are also interesting.

Kind of an off topic fun fact I just found out via the power of Shazam. I really liked the sound of the intro music so I Shazamed it. If anyone else happened to dig it and were interested, it's an Austrailian band called "Even". If this is common knowledge, I apologize for being redundant, but as an American I'd never heard of them. BUT I Spotify'd them after and they are really good!! How the hell they're not more popular I have no idea! They're a good combo of The Charlatans, Stone Roses, Beatles, and...Nirvana, maybe? They've got the heavier rock beats and melodic stylings of Nirvana-especially In Utero era, but with the instrumentation of The Charlatans and jangly guitars of early Beatles while all the while sounding original and maintaining their own personality as a band instead of another Oasis-y, indie copycat. If you like that sort of thing-look 'em up! Im happy I did! New music to love! YAY! ...Now, back to Tim...

I am late to Discover Tim Minchin and late to post on here. But I just wanna thank you for doing the work of uncovering The Australian band, Even. I'm going to go look for their songs. They are very Beatlesque but unique at the same time. Thanks again.

As an Aussie, I love Tim’s work because he is essentially Australian without the “Fosters”, “Kangaroo” bullshit. There is true talent in Australia, Tim, Bazza and dear old Clive show you what it’s all about. Our heritage is British, so why not combine our interests and talents. Onya Timmy.
