The nurse repeated “no he is a real old Jer.k but has a sitter with him.”😂😂😂😂😂 the young nurses are calling the B.S like it is….no sugar coating it!

Let’s also address the fact that these hospitals are PURPOSELY understaffing the floor so that they can stay under budget so that THEY (not the nurses) can get these extravagant bonuses come year end. Meanwhile, nurses are not getting breaks, can barely make time to relieve your bladder or take a sip of water. It’s ridiculous and it needs to be addressed AND rectified!!

Don't forget all the nurses on TikTok dancing around with their sugary energy drinks making $$ off of being sponsored by these drinks and will get diabetes in a few years from all that sugar theyve been consuming. The hospital environment is one of the toxic places ive seen. Toxic people trying to take care of sick people. It's like the blind leading the blind.

I'm an LPN, 19 years in and I haven't done bedside in a while. I've been a clinic nurse for 10 years now.
The lack of patients taking care of themselves is amazing! You would not begin to believe how a lot of people just DO NOT take care of themselves, then come to the doctor looking for a miracle. It's exhausting! Covid took my love for caring for people. Management was horrible during that time and made us clinic nurses feel fairly worthless which killed any thought of me actually FINALLY getting my rn degree. I don't want to care for ungrateful, unhappy, litigous patients. I can't wait, I'm like a lady above; I'm building my exit plan. I gotta go, the burnout is real.

They want someone to wipe their butts and spoon feed them when they come in to the hospital! They are rude!!! I left bedside in 2016 and did CM/UR for insurance and public health and now back to inpatient CM! It’s bad all around!!! We have to deal with homeless population, underinsured or uninsured people that needs meds they can’t afford, frequent flyers, over utilization of the ER for non emergent stuff. If you or others are believers, the end is close because everything is crazy, people are reckless, we are spinning our wheels and it’s only getting worse. No one exercises, eats well, drinks water. They eat lots of junk, drink Starbucks, processed foods, alcohol, smoking, drugs, etc. There is NO WAY we are supposed to live our lives like this. God is not pleased

It’s so fun when you have 7 patients on PM’s and one of them who was severely ill was supposed to be getting all these preps for testing when they can’t even handle drinking a glass of water let alone contrast. I also had one young man with Spina Bifida who needed enemas till clear and the NA and I were in that room all night and he was still full of feces. Again, that was just one patient. I loved when the Charge nurse would assign me patients on all three hallways so you’re supposed to literally run from one hall to the next. I don’t know how I did this for 20 years but I know it affected me own physical and mental health and I’ve been in disability for 10 years. Don’t stay until you’re beyond burned out. If the CEOs don’t get that we need to significant change, especially in nurse to patient ratios, we’re going to be in a world of shit. It’s nice to nurse people your whole life and then by the time we’re going to need help, there won’t be any.

I told him that as soon as he gets there, he will need a skin assessment, so there is no point, plus he wanted me to drag and pull those shorts up against the nice wound care we had just provided. And let’s talk about the rehabs that refuse to send patients to the hospital for money purposes. Here in Texas it is common for the MS nurses to have 8 patients, Telemetry 6, Inpatient Dialysis 3 to 4 if you are in the dialysis room, and ICU 2. When I interviewed for Telemetry, I asked about the ratios, "Oh, it is 4-5 patients and you will have a tech(CNA)", but when I got there, NO, it was 6 patients, and we were lucky if we had 2 techs(CNAs) for 33 patients. Kendra, thanks for the transparency. I can't wait to get into Nursing school. My goal is to be a CRNA perdium OR Esthetics and Legal Nursing Perdium. I want to work as a nurse in the gym or in a 55 plus complex. My friend just takes vitals at buildings that old people live in. They gave her an office for people to just drop in. She makes her own hours and the pay is $100/hour. My friend who works at the gym gets $85/hour to take vitals and answer questions. The gym uses that as an extra perk to get more members. It's been working out fantastic for both.

You make so many important points. I became an RN in '87. Young Nurses TAKE CARE OF YOUR BODIES!! I had to leave the profession because it LITERALLY broke my back. Now after 20+ years of taking care of other people, I am living on social security disability which because I was a nurse, the amount is tiny dollars too much for me to be eligible for any govt assist or program, but its definitely too LITTLE money to pay for my needs with this aging broken body. If I either worked in a supermarket or became a CRNA I would be in better shape financially than as this middle ground bedside nurse I was. According to the number crunchers I have too much, but according to my actual needs I have too little. That's what nursing has given to me.
Another anecdote, recently I had a major surgery (related to the original cause of disability that was directly related to 20+ years of beside nursing),after this major surgery i became incontinent and back, neck braced, total care, I could barely feed myself, and the WHOLE time I couldn't help but apologize over and over again to the nurses caring for me, because I knew, I KNEW I was breaking someone else's back.
TAKE CARE OF YOURSELVES, and do NOT expect the profession to have your back (no pun intended), when you are too broken and battered to do it anymore. Yet in some ways nursing still has my heart, because look what I'm doing I'm seeking out nursing excellence on CZcams so I can listen to the good, bad, and the ugly...
    EXCELLENT talk Kendra really excellent.

I left bedside 3 years ago. I worked in a unionized hospital. A facility where the UNION states staffing ratios, CNA load. We never had a CNA and if we did , he/she would have all the mouth and no work ethic. It got to the point where I actually enjoyed not having to deal with a lazy, mouthy CNA.
I give. I don’t know what or where the status of nursing has gone to. As you said the admins care less. It’s about numbers for them. The only time they want to care is if there is an event involving a patient.

I’m a county mental health worker and I will tell you that these systems are messed up and I help people with disability’s navigate these systems. The entire system is messed up and disability or not it can be difficult to navigate, especially if you are new to the system. The most important work in our country such as healthcare and education are not respected and paid appropriately. It is sad you can get paid more as a dog walker than as a CNA or a child care worker, teacher assistant, or personal care assistant. They are closing nursing homes in our state. We are going to need to quit our jobs to care for our parents and many people have already. Good luck if you have a family member with a disability. Some states are starting to pay family members for care because PCAs don’t make enough. For profit healthcare is gutting the industry and now even the nonprofits are taking up this model. Higher ups don’t care because it’s all about numbers and climbing the sick ladder. The system is broken and those with money will always find care.

I went to nursing school later in life. Straightaway, I discovered that inpatient was too much heavy lifting. I've done a couple of medical specialties and I now work part time in urgent care. Luckily, companies near me hire RNs in urgent care (many areas of the country do not). I've found that part time in nursing is the sweet spot. There is a HUGE turnover in outpatient too. They are expecting the staff to drive to multiple clinics and cover multiple specialties so others can get time off. Just like inpatient with CNAs, we have a major shortage of MAs. Insurance prior authorizations are through the roof so nurses are constantly chasing the paper trail rather than educating their patients!

This is the kind of voice we need at the front of the line. We need good leaders that understand the struggles not full up in ones ego !!!

Hello Kendra, you are absolutely right, when my mother (god rest her soul) was in the hospital I would come in the mornings and get her cleaned up and make sure she eats her breakfast and I would come again in the evening and get her ready for the night. That way 45 plus years ago and the nurses appreciated that. I understand your frustration.

Completely agree! COVID-19 just brought out even more underlying issues for alot of patients...addiction/mental health issues! We can't keep up with the demands as nurses.

Society at large is rude and mean. I had to tell my patient this past weekend that he was NOT going to talk to me any kind of way. He immediately got angrier and asked for the charge nurse (and that's the last thing they need to do, because I will ask charge if THEY want to take the patient, so that doesn't scare me at all, plus I'm charge at times, duh). I just CANNOT with their attitudes, and thinking because they talk to their friends and family that way, that I'm going to accept it. Nope, not me. And that's what goes on my performance review each year, because I talk back, instead of act like a quiet, nice nurse who likes to get cursed out for the sake of customer service numbers.

The reason the ratios are high is simple: profit margins. Hospitals keep more $ by hiring fewer nurses. CEOs get huge bonuses for keeping payroll as low as possible.
Here in Louisiana, ive had as many as 32 med/surg patients. There is NO law here mandating any ratios.

Totally agree! Even as an ultrasound tech I can see the strain on the healthcare system. We are told to work faster, handle more patients and miss lunch breaks. The comorbidities are crazy too, patients can't even move their own body weight sometimes. My ultrasound machine only has so much power to penetrate the body, I am not a miracle worker!!

During the pandemic, they saw that we can do more with less and stick with it. Literally we’re never staffed, more tasks are added, ratios are insane, all for little pay. And they wonder why ppl are leaving the bedside? We’re STRESSED and being stretched thin. Some patients will not get the best, quality care in these circumstances and I feel so bad for them.

You are so right in everything you said. As an LPN it is really difficult for us. The RNs give us most of their work. And if we tell the aides to do this or that, it’s a threat of a walkout so you end up doing most of their work also. Because if they quit it’s even worse for the LPN.

Thank you! One of the most honest and accurate description of the state of nursing I've ever heard. 30 plus years in nursing and I'm planning my escape.
