I love how Hader can never stop smiling or laughing and breaking character. With other people that can be annoying but it totally works for him.
Except he is so obviously reading off the cue cards, Hader lazily appears to have barely glanced at the script prior to performing the sketch. Maybe that was the intent, like a bad rendition of the Spiccoli character (played by Sean Penn)in 'Fast Times At Ridgemont High.'

@@HasinaiMan from what I've heard, he actually studies the script almost religiously. Because of his anxiety. However, with the way snl works, at least with him and John Mulaney, he probably could never be certain if the cue cards were gonna change. (Also anxiety can make you do a lot of things, like reading exclusively from cue cards even if you have the whole thing memorized)
hes the writer/creator of the skit btw ;) so, hes not really laughing at the jokes he wrote.. hes laughing at the performance of the characters by the others... poor fred cracked him up

This is my favourite episode. Bill Hader has said that Fred caught him off guard with the wudareyuudoinghere as it was different than in rehearsal. They barely hold it together. 😂 Brolin does an awesome job in this too

On a side note, the Zankou Chicken on Sunset and Fairfax on the border of Hollywood and WeHo is way way better than the one in little armenia

My brother started working in LA a couple months ago and he kept laughing because everyday felt like an episode of The Californians when people started discussing which route they took to their work site that day.
He said people would look at him funny when he was chuckling to himself, but then he started playing the sketches for people at lunch, and now they’re doing the exaggerated accents when they tell each other how they got to work and he says it’s a much more entertaining place to work! 😂🙌

Where I live roads don't make sense and we all use alleys and washes, roads are for the tourists and every road turns into four different roads as you drive down it so you're suddenly on a road you don't know even though you never turned.
If you don't mention the roads. People can't get an idea of how to get there. You know, it's easier if you have a mental picture.
I rarely do and I'm a Californian born and raised. I go based off of landmarks like "the biglots next to the 99 cent store" or "the good little Cesar's pizza" lol.

As a third generation Californian woman one of the first pieces of advice my grandmother gave me about making conversation with boys was to ask what route they took between their house and the party.
It worked every time - I always had an ice breaker for any conversation.

I saw Bill on Seth Meyers show and he said that Fred wasn't supposed to run the sentence together like that, but when it came time to do the sketch thats how he slurred it and it caught Bill and Kristin both off guard so bad that it was impossible to stay composed from that point on...pretty much Fred sabotaged them from the first sentence XD

God I loved this scene when first saw it live, but it's even better knowing the backstory. This was a running bit between Bill and Fred, they'd talk about their vacation week trips to LA and do stupid voices and talk about streets. Eventually several actors and writers were in on it and it became this soap opera skit. Anyway, the whole week Fred does the "what are you doing here?" line in a regular voice, but during the show he does the now legendary "wha-whaaaaateerrr you doing here??" which caused both Bill and Kirsten to break instantly. 😂😂 That's exactly the type of thing I would do to mess with cast members.

Fun fact: in the read and dress rehearsal for this skit, Fred had just said “What” normally and that’s how it was written. But live he said it like you hear without Bill or Kristen being aware he would say it like that. That’s the main reason they’re about to crack.
Lucy my favorite SNL actors are Pete Davidson, Mikey Day, And my favorite Bill Hader.
They were pretty phenomenal talents! SNL was lucky to have them. Kate Mackinnon, Cecily Strong and this new lady Heidi Gardener are all pretty amazing too....oh! AND I think Beck Bennett and Mikey Day are pretty strong comedic talents as well.

I'm an L.A. native and when I moved to the east coast for a few years I thought it was weird that people didn't use 'the' when they would reference freeways and highways. Didn't realize that's just a Cali thing. HAHA.
