This brought tears to my eyes I had lived in New Orleans for 6 before Katrina and nearly 14 after. I had to move away to help my family, It's been 7 years. Thank you, Matty.
Katrina was in 2005, if you lived there for 14 after that would put you at leaving in 2019. It has not been 7 years since 2019

my dad is from New Orleans and so is my grandma. I have endless amount of family down there (Im from MA) I only meet a handful of them and I always hoped to visit. this video made my hope so much stronger into connecting with family ill never meet.

I went to New Orleans last year the weekend after Mardi Gras, When I landed back home in Detroit the first Covid case just popped up at the airport.
So happy I got to see it before the world came to a stop.

I was in Rochester NY for Mardi Gras one year. Just happened to be there at the right time. What I saw wasn't really crazy like it is down south but the food for sure is a huge thing, and so is Fat Tuesday. There is a large Cajun community out there, lots of people with southern roots. After emancipation, freed slaves came up the eastern seaboard, and Rochester is right in there. I had some of the best Po' Boy's I've ever had!
New Orleans is my favorite city. I live in Memphis and we get weird but it’s a whole different level in nawlins.
We love memphis, many new orleanians do, its so much more calm!

Born and raised in Church Point here. This is the first year we don't have Mardi Gras in 50 something years. Seeing these clips from a few years ago is helping fill the void of chasing chickens and drinking booze. Glad to see my small town on the big stage!

No not American culture, Louisiana (cajun/creole) culture. Mardi Gras is specific to that state, its not widely celebrated in other states.

You can argue semantics if you want, but it’s like me saying that Juneteeth is part of American culture knowing damn well white, asian and latin Americans don’t celebrate it.

Not when you are a foreigner looking at America from the outside. This person would think that all Americans celebrate Mardi Gras when in reality it’s specific to a certain region and set of people. We as Americans understand sub culture but if you’re not from here its easy to make these kinds of assumptions. I just try to educate where needed.

The reason y'all seeing a difference in food and culture is because Creole is AFRICAN (more about food, fun, family, community) and Cajun is FRENCH CANADIAN (more of a copy of Creole culture mixed with rural French traditions and drinking). That's why Matty felt more comfortable around 9th Ward than in Lafayette. No disrespect to either, but they are different. All the food you associate with Louisiana is CREOLE, not Cajun. ⚜️
