    I just bought a black Gretsch G5230T (for rock) and enjoy playing it. It looks great on the wall next to my petrol G5210-P90 (for blues) and orange G5655TG (for blues, rockabilly). None of them are locked into the type of music I originally purchased them for. I found myself playing Sultans of Swing by Dire Straits on the orange G5655TG this morning, followed by a little jump blues on the same guitar. All of them played great, right out of the box. I didn't have to do anything other than tune them to pitch.

    I got a bee in my bonnet to pick one of these up and you convinced me I have to check one out. It’s got all my favorite tones. I love my Tele’s but I miss the vibrato. I think this is the full pack of bacon.

    I’ve been looking at this guitar for a while and I love the way it looks and sounds. As I was watching your review I was thinking “I think I can get almost the same sound out of my Tele”. I still may pick one up used in the near future, they’re going for $350-$479. I don’t need it, I just want it.

    Brilliant playing there John, love the retro vibe

    I’ve had this exact same guitar, same colour, for nearly two years and still can’t decide if it’s a keeper. Yes, one week, no the next. Been thinking of exchanging for an Epi LP Custom, but I already have a Gibson LP Tribute, so I don’t need another LP. But I still fancy one. Your playing on this video was simply brilliant and now swaying me towards keeping. The finish is excellent, but the walnut fingerboard is stained and after fairly limited use, the wood colouring has become very inconsistent , being lighter in areas of highest usage. What I do like is the look - if it were a motorbike, it would be a Harley!

    The track fit the vibe of this one very well - great job! 😎👌
    This one and the Duesenberg you had on recently have really been up my street tone wise 👍
    Gassin hard here!

    There is a Gretsch G5220 which is essentially the same in all aspects except the pickups which are Broadtrons, and considered to be more like regular humbuckers. So it would be closer to a Les Paul, whereas the G5230 is more like a telecaster on steroids. Note that the G5220 lacks the Bigsby though.

    Billy Duffy from The Cult probably still plays his Gretch White Falcon, he seemed to rock it out pretty good.

    • @keithjones4702

    • @davidsinclair1288
      @davidsinclair1288 Před 6 měsíci +1

      Billy tends to use the White Falcon for songs off the earlier albums, which usually use lower gain tones, and a Les Paul for songs off the later albums that rock out more. Think She Sells Sanctuary (White Falcon) vs Fire Woman (Les Paul).

      His White Falcon is played through a Roland Jazz Chorus - brilliant sound never far back from feeding back 😀@@davidsinclair1288

    Really enjoyed that mix, love the sound of those Filtertrons. That's a very nice guitar and within it's genres a superb one. Be nice to know what it was like 'out the box' but kudos to Korea anyway.

    I bought one of these and I totally agree with you. The Gretsch is nice and interesting but I'll always reach for my Tele or Strat first.

  • @belmontbutty4143

    Previously owned one of these, minus the Bigsby. Nice weight, decent pick ups but would swap out for a set of TV Jones. I sold it as the machine heads needed replacing and I could be bothered shelling out for a set as I just didn't like the neck profile - not enough real estate for me. Shame really as I do like 'that Gretsch sound'. A decent alternative, if more expensive, are the center block juniors. Can look a little blingy, but Gretsch do like a little bling. All the best, John.

    Have to disagree John, Chris Cornell used a Jet with Soundgarden for many heavy rock songs. Tons of gain. Check it out. Cheers.

      You can easily do hard rock with these. The blacktop filtertrons are ridiculously versatile. I've even done metal with mine. So when people say it doesn't do those things it's simply false

    Does the master volume work, or is if basically on or off? My 5220 was like that, and with a glossy neck and noisy pups, I sold it.

    I believe the Marshall DSL1 gave up the ghost a while back, & that was part of the reason for moving to the BluGuitar AMP1. Was there ever any mention of the DSL1 getting mended? I'm just curious as to what the root cause for the failure was, and what the fix was, if there was one.

    Nice to know the output of pickups on these guitars is actually very low, too low for me. Thx for information.

  • @KozmykJ
    @KozmykJ Před 6 měsíci

    The tones you get from those Filtertrons depend entirely on how you set your amp and FX.
    AC/DC rhythm tones for example. 🙄
    Yes Filtertrons are brighter and lower output than regular humbuckers but there's plenty of Welly available there if you know what you're doing with your gear.
    PS
    Don't forget also that DC resistance only gives a rough idea of a pickup's output.

    I like these guitars. I just prefer for my guitars to be more “versatile”. What it specializes in it does extremely well, i just cant afford to have several guitars for such narrow genres. I would probably go for my strat before i grabbed one of these.

    I bought one of these second hand and have a few questions: Should there be a plastic bushing underneath the tremolo spring? Also, what would be the proper way of removing the tremolo arm so it doesn't bump the top of the case when closed? Thanx for any help.

    • @JRobsonGuitar
      @JRobsonGuitar  Před 13 dny +1

      Hmm... Not sure. This guitar was loaned to me so I have no experience of what it's like to live with. Let me forward your questions to the chap who owns the guitar & I'll get back to you 👍

      @@JRobsonGuitar Thanks very much!

      @JRobsonGuitar  Před 12 dny

      And here comes the response...
      Hello, John

      My gretsch ProJet has what appears to be a red plastic washer beween the tremolo arm
      and the spring. That is also the case on my other semi-hollow center-block gretsch, even
      though that is fitted with a different Bigsby model. So I would say a plastic washer is the
      usual spec. Even the cheap chinese generic brand (bigsby-knockoff) I fiited to my SG has
      a plastic washer. As far as I know there is little you can do to stow away the trem arm in
      terms of it not interfering with closing of a hard shell case. The only other comment I can
      make about the ProJet in respect to a case is that, although the ProJet body looks as if it
      is smaller than that of a simiilarly-shaped Les Paul, it actually has a body larger than that
      of a Les Paul and it will not fit into a Les Paul-sized case. I have mine in my soft Gibson
      case and even in that it's a tight fit.
      Thanks for asking.
      DAVE

      @@JRobsonGuitar Thanks for responding. Well, I need a bushing I guess. Also, luckily the guy I bought it from included a soft case in the deal.
