True Romance is the best I have ever seen . This movie is right up there in a close 2nd. Raging bull one of the greatest movies of all time hands down. The editing in this is brilliant!!! Far as Dinero his greatest performance ever my opinion.

Ken, awesome review of a great Criterion release (one of the best of the year so far)! Yes, longtime Scorsese filmmaking partner Thelma Schoonmaker won the Academy Award for Editing. She’s edited most of Scorsese’s films I think. I agree a digibook would have been nice for this release. Criterion’s still got it!! Criterion added a couple of new excellent video essays for this release in addition to the features ported over from the older releases.

So glad I got this title GIFTED to me! (Thanks Dad!)... I love this movie, definitely in my top 5 Scorsese films! I'm only 22 but I wish I was my dads age so I could've enjoyed all these masterpiece's as they were released in theatres... He always says nothing beats the old school movie experience!

Raging Bull .. is Top 3 Scorsese for me.
For whatever reason we still don't have Scorsese's After Hours and Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore on blu-ray which is criminal. Supposedly Criterion has those and will put them out soon.
Scorsese's Mean Streets blu-ray has been OOP for a while. Have a feeling a 50th Anniv 4K is coming next year via Criterion too!
King of Comedy.. is great as well! For those who didn't pick it up ...it's a Fox blu-ray. Once it goes OOP that's it.. unless the mouse decides to re-release it.

I have After Hours on blu ray. It’s a great movie. I picked it up from Amazon in Spain for about £15 (including delivery).Lovely picture. If you are in USA it might be a different cost. I haven’t seen it on any Criterion release schedule yet.

This excellent 4K edition of Raging Bull is definitely one of the highlights of the year. 👍
My only complaint about the packaging is about somebody's idiotic decision to use grey font against a black background for the cover art. The spine and back cover are pretty much unreadable. 😒
(I'm Canadian - so, yes, that is how we spell "grey" 🙂).

One more thing about the audio. Probably one of the better uses of surround sound in a 2 channel source. I had the DTS up mixer enabled so I had all 7.2.4 speakers available. For example, the non boxing arena scenes, most of the sound was coming out the center channel to a degree that I would have taken some points for lack is 2 channel stereo separation. However, every time it switches to the boxing scenes in the arena, the soundstage opens up big and wide and it was very immersive. The surround parts are there and they are not kidding when they say 2.0 surround DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack.

It's my favorite Scorsese film with a benchmark level acting performance by Robert De Niro that earned him his second Oscar, this time for a leading role. De Niro actually put on about 60 pounds (27 kg) to portray Jake LaMotta in is latter years; those are not pillows in his abdomen folks. All the actors gave top notch performances in this film.
Unfortunately, this movie didn't win the Academy Awards in 1980 for Best Picture and Best Director, instead those two awards went to "Ordinary People". Ordinary what? That's right, the movie that nobody remembers while Raging Bull is considered a masterpiece by most, making it to 4th spot on the American Film Institute's top 100 list.
I own the Blu-ray and I ordered the 4K from Criterion a couple of days ago during the 50% off sale.

Enough with extras! Usually a waste of bit-rate. I rarely watch them once. Just give us the best looking film. I can imagine Scorsese is burnt out discussing every aspect of this film. Criterion should just include a vial of Marty's blood and satisfy everybody for once and all. Overall, everyone wants detailed explanations and a guide to explain every nuance of every work of art. This mindset has destroyed movies in general. Audiences want to know every detail about a character from the moment of conception.
