- In April 2022, I posted a video titled 'My Next Synth' in which I chat about what synthesizer, if any, would be my next purchase. The Jupiter X featured highly, and it seems, someone was watching.
Less than a year later, an anonymous benefactor gifted me with my own Jupiter X.
I am blessed, and I am grateful. God is good, and there are some kind people out there.
Unmerited favour.
Here is the story, and a brief overview of this amazing instrument.
All sounds (except for clips from previous video) are from the Jupiter X.
Special mention to Gids Joubert of BOTHNERS Music N1 City Cape Town, for facilitating the whole surreal experience. - Hudba
Rare combination of wonderful musician and gentle guy. Tony, you richly deserve this, I rejoice for you, my friend.
I've owned and sold many analogue synths over the years including Prophet 10 (double manual), ARP Quadra etc etc and loved them except for the regular expensive visits to my synth tech. The Jupiter X does everything those synths could do and a lot more. An amazing piece of kit.
You are blessed👍
I am!!
This is Awesome, That someone Saw something in You to Gift you with this Great Musical Tool... WOW 💖
What a great story. So many good people out there and it’s clear how much it means to you. Happy for you and also great tunes you’re playing on it too. Have fun!
Thank you Roland!

Yes!
Well Tony, firstly, if anyone deserves this blessing, it is you. Secondly, if anyone can exercise the machine and take full advantage of it, it's you. So thanks to the very kind person. May they be abundantly blessed.🙏
Thanks for your kind words, Graham! I am still on a learning curve, and I am only scratching the surface, but I am looking forward to getting creative with this great machine!
Can't wait to hear what you can do with it. What a wonderful story in our sad world.
Congratulations Tony, you deserve this through and through 💪🏽
Wonderful! I've been dreaming about the Juno X.
The Juno X looks amazing too! Hope you get one! :-)
Thank you!@@TonyDrake1960
wonder who enjoyed the moment in the store more: you on the jp x or the staff knowing what was going to happen after an hour. 😁
so now that they dropped the JD800 plugout for Jupite X, will you let go of the JD800?
I have thought about that, and I probably will at some point, but it's not a priority at the moment. My JD is still behaving beautifully, and I enjoy the tactile experience of having the second keybed (which is not quite as luxurious as the JPX, but very nice, nevertheless. Here where I live (pretty much 3rd world economy), the plug-out actually has a significant cost, and the JD cannot fetch the same collector's value as it does in 1st world countries, so selling it is not as attractive an idea here as elsewhere (shipping from here also presents its own set of challenges)
Long story cut short, I will eventually, even if I keep the JD, but not really on the table at the moment.
Great One Mate
Thank you, David!
JD800 in the window? I really hope you have a thicc cover to protect it from the sun.
On the other way, really good video. Jupiter X is a beast, but way too complicated for me. I hope, you will have lots of fun with it!
Yup, I do have a cover, and i close the curtains when the sun shines in as well! :-)
What’s the patch / scene for that Enigma-esque ARP starting around 4:20. Absolutely stunning!!
I will say that you sounded absolutely tremendous! I hope that you will do some videos for youtube!
Thank you George!
I certainly intend to make some CZcams videos focusing on this awesome sounding keyboard. It really does have an exceptional sound quality.
Tony, nice track.
Thanks Doc!
I've had mine since the first lockdown and it's not going anywhere anytime soon.
Man, why’d you have to go and sell me on this monster, Tony? Now, I want one!
To be sure, that desire isn’t entirely new. It predates when Roland issue the Jupiter exit by a couple of decades. It goes back to when I was 20 in first read Vintage Synthesizers. That book mentions several instruments that have digital sound-generating mainframes and analog subtractive properties combined together.
Great story but it would have been nice if Tony could have passed a (smaller) synth to a younger (poorer) member of the community. There are kids who could do with a kick start. Great video by the way
Thanks for the comment @richardpennington5445. The first thing I thought of, was exactly that. I was immediately advised by the salesman who had co-ordinated the whole thing to not see this as something to be reciprocated out of guilt or a sense of fairness. I have subsequently 'gifted' a keyboard or two to folk who (a) needed something and (b) would be able to put the keyboard to proper use. The first challenge with donating synthesizers to people in impoverished communities, is they generally need a simple piano or stage keyboard. For example, a Korg Minilogue would be a bit of a white elephant (and overkill) for a person just needing to learn and play in a church band.
I had also donated a number of synths, samplers and other electronic studio gear to students, including a youngster who had lost his keyboard in a shack fire. Naturally, I am not really wanting to advertise this, but mentioning in response to your comment, which I totally get. Believe me, I had to process it all in this context.
@@TonyDrake1960 You are a fine man 👏🏻👏🏻
hi tony. i just bought a roland juno x, does it make any sense if ill buy the jupiter x too?
Hi Marco, i have not had the pleasure of trying a Juno X yet, but I don't think it would be necessary to have both.
Sure, they are different, but also have similarities, and some overlapping synth engines/models.
I have not made in depth comparisons, or researched it much, but I imagine there would be a lot of overlap. I reckon the Juno X is enough of a powerhouse to cover all the obvious 'synth' basics and its layout for programming is fairly straightforward as well. If I were to compliment either the Juno X or Jupiter X, I would probably pair if with a product that has fundamentally different architecture and sounds, like a Korg wavetable type synth or a Yamaha FM type synth, for example.
Enjoy the Juno X. Your next move (if any) may become more clear once you have played with it for a while.
Hey that's pretty cool Covid lockdown grooming all things considered.
Does it have sequencer?
Nope. It just has an arpeggiator, which features an "i-arpeggiator' ('Intelligent arpeggiator') which creates some very cool 'randomised' sequences of notes and beats. These settings can be stored as part of a 'scene' (layers of parts).
However, there is no sequencer per say. So the Jupiter X is not a workstation like the Fantom series.

Did you get to know the donor?
Nope! It was made very clear to me that the donor wished to remain anonymous. I did spend some time trying to guess who it was, and I do have my suspicions, but I had to let it go early in the game to stay reasonably sane. I remain grateful, and I am at peace with not knowing who was so kind to me. :-)
Add the JD-800 to it and do a comparison to the original you have…
I may do so eventually. It's not a cheap addition in my country, and I don't really need it as I have the real deal without having to steal polyphony and parts on the Jupiter. From what I have heard, the new emulations are very close to the original, and I reckon, once in a mix, any difference would be purely academic. If, and when I get the JD model for the Jupiter, I'll let you know what I think.
