The dimensions comparison was fantastic. The g9 and g9ii is so close and people have made such a song and dance about it!
I know! So so many questions about it. Had to interrupt my regularly scheduled programming to make this video and dispel the myth. 😂
Thank you, Marlene. The new G9 Mii is ABSOLUTELY so much FUN that no one cares about the size except people who own other camera brands. No drama necessary-just get out and shoot. I’m getting shots I would have missed in the past so I am really excited to see what YOU do in the coming year. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and process. 🤩
Haha. Well put Sherry! And yes, I’m all about the joy now!
Marlene, this comparison was much appreciated as I am among those who think the OG9 ergonomics are just about perfect, the deep grip being among my favorite features.
The G9II is going to feel like home to you.
Well put, Marlene.Thanks. I agree with your conclusion. I had the GX9 and changed it to the G9,as eventually it was too small. The upgrade th the G9ii seems natural for me.
Yes indeed. The G9 to G9II is an easy transition.
Many thanks Marlene for this very helpful comparison. I might now be tempted to trade in my original G9😊.
You should! Especially if you're a birder! The new AF is fantastic.
Thanks Marlene, I weighed them both and came to the same conclusion, I like the deep grip, as I have netballers hands so suits me.
Keep them coming👏🏻
Before I had this camera in my hands I was initially worried by all the “size” complaints I was hearing about. So I just had to get the actual specs and get this video out.
Totally agree. I've had my G9 for years and love the feel of it - and the menu system. Although the Mark II looks a little bulkier, to me, the ergonomics are a little better and an already great menu system is even better!
There’s very little difference in the feel of them as far as the grip goes. I think you’ll like it!
I do - I've had my Mark II for several weeks now:) @@ImageMaven
Hi Marlene, two great cameras and the same size, it's a Win Win and you had fun as well. Great result. I learned something new today, thank you 😊
So happy to hear you learned something new. Thank you for dropping your comment. ☺️
@@ImageMaven Your welcome Marlene 😊
Great video Marlene & Thanks! When I left Full Frame to shoot Micro 4/3, my original G9 handled effortlessly. I'm excited about the new G9 ii.
It's a dream camera! Loving it so far.
This video already finished @01:00 ^^ Thank you Marlene, you went straight to the subject :) i switched to G9 II from a Sony A7R V (yeah, strange) because of overall weight of my camera bag, and i am happy now that i can take everything without exploding my shoulders.
Welcome to the M43 club! 📷
Love it 😁
Hi Marlene! Hope you're having a good day today 🙂 Yep, got my G9ii last week, and now that I've got it set up the way I like it, my only practical difference is a better hit rate through the lenses I already love. I'm keeping my G9 as a backup. I'm planning to sell my old G85 towards a discount on the 2.0 teleconverter for a tighter shot on my 50-200 lens on the upcoming solar eclipse.
Ooh you have a great kit there. That 50-200mm is sweet. Enjoy!
Thanks Marlene. I am going to have a look at the G9ii next week. Maybe I will take the plunge and upgrade from my G80
If you're into birds and wildlife photography, I'd say a definite yes. But this is a lot of camera for most people. And it will definitely feel big coming from your G80. Take your G80 with you when you go look at the G9II.
I like this body style. The only thing that was odd was how easy it is to bump that back aperture dial. However just assign operation lock to one of the programable buttons. It locks the dial nicely.
I bought a used G9II a week ago. It feels very comfortable. I bought a 100-300 LUMIX lens, and I was pleasantly surprised with the results. I can rarely get birds in flight on my full frame Sony A7IV with the Sigma 150-600. With the LUMIX,I got seagulls and geese in flight with 1/800 I’m learning I can use slower shutter speeds with this incredible IBIS. My only wish is for animal detect in S&Q 120 fps. It works in everything under 120fps. I love slow motion squirrel footage.
Yay! Congratulations. I can’t believe you found a used one already! I should look for one. The one I have is on loan. Glad you’re liking the results with it so far. Enjoy!
@@ImageMaven B&H had it for $1400 USD. I used my tax refund. I did a review on my camera channel. I can’t resist trying out cameras. I don’t know how I got into photography, but it really makes life fun.
Hi Marlene, another great, informative video. I’m very happy with the size of my G9. I did try the G9 II for size when it arrived at my local camera shop (I was researching some Sony full frame options.). I also looked at the S5 II, which is about identical in size to the G9 II. About watching your comparison, I’m more inclined to buy the S5 II as my next Lumix camera, to get the advantages of the full frame. I will still keep either my G9 or probably my GX9, but reduce the number of lens that I have. Happy New Year! -Marty
Sounds like a great plan Marty. I do prefer my smaller cameras and so tempted to pick up a GX9 while they’re still floating around. What are you shooting mostly? Have fun with your FF!
@@ImageMaven Most travel and vacation, a lot of cruises and tours now that we are retired. So, landscapes, city views, and street photography., I always have my camera with me, so much so, that fellow travelers usually ask me to share photos with them. Also, love hiking and biking and I always have a camera with me. We love going to botanical gardens land zoos with our young granddaughter, so plenty of photo opportunities. And, I also love macro photography. That pretty much covers it all. I expect that I’ll get the FF sometime this year depending on price.
@@martyptx Wonderful. Great to hear you have all those opportunities to practice your craft, and sounds like you’re enjoying life to the full.
Exactly!
You know it Sue!
Hmm… I often pick my Olympus E-M5 III because it’s not as “bulky” as the E-M1 III. Feature-wise I certainly would appreciate the G9 II, but size seems to be an issue for me.
If size is an issue, stick with what you have and maybe consider the OM-1 in the future instead.
Haha, a good point Marlene! In in my case I always complained about the size of my g9, I find it gets little use as a result so despite how the G9ii improved an otherwise already great camera I suspect it would meet the same fate. Most of the time I’m paddling or on long hikes and small and light are key. Different tools for different uses. Still, it is such a nice camera…..and those photos!
Agree with you there Gordon. I tend to choose my smaller cameras for everyday carry-around and photo walks. But for birding, the G9II is now my first choice.
@@ImageMaven and you have 2 g100’s to offset!
Yes I do, as well as a GM1 and a GM5. But the GM5 is nearly worn out. That’s one reason why I got the G100. But now it’s actually my main CZcams camera.
Thanks a lot for your video's. What are your first impressions on the autofocus compared to the OM1? Is it similar or are you noticing some differences?
I don’t feel I have quite enough experience with either yet to make a final judgement. But the G9II is excellent so far. The OM-1 was excellent compared to the original G9. And both cameras work very well in good light. Mike Lane just released a video comparing the two cameras if you’re interested in his findings. Worth a look! Cheers.
What I like about the OM1 is that, if you do have a long tele lens, you can add the battery grip, which gives you a better grip but if you are using primes or any other smaller, just take the grip off and you have a light compact body again. Besides the better grip for big lenes, the batter grip gives you more shooting time. Very versatile system!
Thanks for sharing all of that Rob. Very useful..
the s5's battery grip works with the s5ii and s5iix and the g9ii.
Thanks Marlene, great video. From yours and others' comments, it looks like I should upgrade. I love the weight and ergonomics of my G9, particularly with the 100-400. Is the grip on the G9 mk11 the same? Where I live I can't get one to try in store.
The grip is slightly meatier. About 1mm deeper if I hold them bottom to bottom.
@ImageMaven Thanks Marlene. I was worried it might be smaller. 😃
Definitely not smaller!
I prefer smaller cameras like the GX9 or even my tiny LX5 🙂
I do too, and I use small cameras more than the big ones - except when I’m birding.
Marlene thank you - great info in the size and weight of your G9II - I am trying to decide if I should take my old G9 or my G100 on vacation,- what do you think?
Hi Michael. I would say it depends on what kind of vacation it is.
1) Exotic locale with interesting sights - G9 or G100 with a sharp zoom lens.
2) Family and friends vacation in an urban area, or in a high theft area, or backpacking, lots of walking etc - G100 with fast sharp prime or kits lens - tuckable inside your jacket. In urban areas I don't like to be noticed with a "big" camera or lens combo.
Your thoughts will vary to mine. But I'm cautious. And as a woman traveling alone I'm extra careful all the time, even in my own city!
Thank you for doing this review. A quick question about video, does this camera come with a 180 degree angle built in to the menu? Or do we have to do some math?
There is a menu for that but it’s tricky to find. I had to ask someone to help me find it. It’s in the first page of the video set up menu. Look for: SS/gain operation.
Great video, I’m puzzled as to why they dropped the unique to Lumix top panel🤔
Good question! Maybe because the S5 series doesn't have it, and they used the same basic body design for the G9II. A lot of people miss it!
How’s the half press on the shutter release? Have they fixed it? The original G9 took a long while to get use to, so soft. Many photos taken by accident. Great video by the way!
Hi Greg, I just had a feel of both. And the new G9II feels a bit less sensitive than the G9. But I got used to the G9 shutter after a few hours.
Thank you for the calrification Marlene. Clear comparision and I am now sure I will feel the same as you on this.
That wouldn't have been a deal breaker, I do want the feature rich G9 II. To me the question was more do I keep the G9 or do I sell it ? Now I think I may sell the G9 without looking back. I am struggling to find a -good- reason to keep it ;)
Sell the G9 while you can. OR keep it for those situations or travels where the PDAF or new subject detection is not a concern. I'm keeping my G9 to take to the skatepark, because there's always a risk it will get stolen or dropped. If you don't have a good reason to keep the G9, then get rid of it!
I sure don't. For travel I use the OM-1 because as you pointed out it is smaller (not that much bigger than my GX9 btw). Yeah, you're right I should sell it.@@ImageMaven
Great ergonomic camera, as g9 was before it
Agree with you Paul!
I care about the size compare with other cameras with larger sensors. This is one of the reasons I choose micro 4/3
I came to the G9 ii from the G95. It is bigger & heavier but with the old 100-400mm is actually more comfortable. The main difference for me is fitting it in my camera backpack. The G95 fitted very snugly with the big lens & just doesn't quite make it with the G9 ii. It's ok with my other lenses though.
Yes, it definitely takes up a lot of space in the smaller bags. I tend to carry my camera out when birding (always be ready) around my shoulders and keep a small waist pack for snacks, water and a short prime lens, just in case I come across a lovely landscape. Enjoy your new camera!
I was disappointed the the body shape has changed and that the battery grip for my G9 won't fit the Mk2
That is definitely unfortunate!
I chose the original G9 over competing models from Oly primarily because I find Oly (and Sony "FF" bodies, BtW) too small. The G9 feels so comfortable and secure (even more so with the battery grip, especially with bigger lenses like the Leica 100-400). The superior ergonomics (physical and logical UI) are an added bonus. I just hope the G9 II feels as good, as I plan to get one soon.
The G9II feels really good in the hands. Much better than I expected. And it balances nicely with the 100-400mm too.
@@ImageMaven Thanks, GTK. I've gotten used to the grip on my G9 as it's on there almost all the time. It would be nice if they'd offer a package deal as the grip's overpriced at US$350--too bad the old one won't fit the new body. My other essential accessory is a deeper eyecup--the EC4 for the G9 I blocks all ambient light in landscape and most in portrait, but there doesn't seem to be an OEM option for the G9 II (or even the S5 II, which I assume is the same). I suppose it doesn't matter so much if you shoot with glasses...
is the "variable frame rate" mode available on G9m2? (I've used it on g9, gh5 for fast video timelapse shooting in 2fps
Yes it is. I'm talking a bit about that in my next video which is out tomorrow morning.
Agree with you my GX9 is nice but the lack of grip and balance with everything but tiny lenses, make me prefer to use a larger camera most of the time. Also larger camera's have more dedicated buttons in general. For quicker operation. Nonetheless I still hope Panasonic will bring the GX series back to life.
Yes, would be fun to have some new small cameras! I do love a small camera for most situations, except birding.
I agree that the GX9 has a lack of grip. That’s why I added al metal handle hand grip attachment to my GX9, right after I bought it. It makes the GX9 feel much like me G9!
I don’t think it’s the weight that most people are concerned with. It’s the fact that Lumix has repurposed the shell for a S5 II. Don’t get me wrong, I get why they did it. To save costs perhaps or to maintain a continuity across the model line up. But it just feels sooo uninspiring. The G9 felt like it was something substantial, this one feels too watered down….meh. I feel that as a successor to one of the most storied cameras in their lineup, Lumix haven’t really hit the mark for me(strictly design wise ofcourse). All subjective I know, but that’s just the vibe the new G9 II gives.
Wow that's the first time I've heard that. For me it's the joy of getting the shots. I completely forget about the camera body and live in the moment.
@@ImageMavenI don’t think it has to be an either/or…..you can live in the moment using whichever camera. I was merely making an observation.
Using the s5 body would mean that the camera when shooting videos would not overheat so quickly, yes it would have saved a re design but hey ho why not?
What we need again is a true compact camera with 30x optical zoom. Panasonic used to sell these cameras but no longer available. Its a true pity
Those are very handy, especially on a fair weather holiday. Maybe you can find them used.
guess ill continue lifting weights with my GH5ii :D thats 727g body with battery only! goes up to 1KG with the 100-300mm! edit: its heavier at 1.3kg or so but still
No need for that gym membership! 😉
LUMIX paired with the 100-400mm Leica a “Heavy beast?” No, that was my old SLR paired with a Tamron 150-600mm. THAT was a heavy beast, and the whole reason I went micro four thirds.
Oh yes. I sometimes forget those days of hauling a big DSLR or two around industrial job sites.
Sadly, I thing the original G9 was too big!!. and the problem continue…
OM1 fits much better my needs but a gx9 II, with G9 II photo specs are number 1 in my wish list.
I’d buy that camera too!
Why would you ever ADD length, height & depth? Multiply to get the volume - but adding makes no real sense, right??
Just having a bit of fun. Either way I sliced it, I knew I’d get a negative comment.
So yes, it's huge. Surprise, it's the same as another camera the same size and weight but that isn't the real question is it. All the MFT bodies are getting oversized. Compare it to a PEN-F or the Lumix GX9.
Agree! I love a smaller camera body myself, though the larger bodies make using the super-telephoto lenses easier to handle. If I was t a birder, I'd stick to smaller gear all the time.
Compare it with the Olympus OM-D E-M1x and Lumix S5 II an Lumix S1R. These Lumix cameras lose out, not so much on body weight as the lenses.
That's really not what the point of my video is. Plus, I don't have access to any of those cameras to get a feel for them.
There essentially is no difference.
