  • Evening Lecture | "George Kennan and American Grand Strategy during the Cold War" | John Lewis Gaddis | October 3, 2011
Wonder why the Naval War College curriculum includes classics like Thucydides? Former NWC Professor John Lewis Gaddis made a compelling argument in the first evening lecture of the year that USA's Cold War Containment Strategy resulted from George Kennan's understanding of Russian classics.

I am a Viet Nam veteran, 1968-1969. Having read Thucydides and the Sicilian Expedition, Professor Gaddis is absolutely correct in referring to this as cathartic, deeply moving. Thank you, Sir.

Great program. The reason Professor Gaddis is required reading at Senior Service Colleges is self-evident.

I would love to some thoughts on my thoughts.
Russia: I would think that most experts believe the US policy during the Cold War was correct. But after, should have the US policy had been more engaging. May be a different outcome today.
China: US policy has been engaging for 50 years. But China's actions dont reflect the US freindly engagement.
China wants to be a respected world power but their actions should not be respected by the West.

    Accurate predictions & salient points.
Currently, Putin is in great peril.
Not from NATO, but Oligarchs & Navalny.
Russian leaders don’t get to retire. They mysteriously experience a “medical moment”…
    Economic statistics tell the tale:
Ruble has lost 1/2 it’s value. Oil is 2/3 exports.
    Disposable income dropped 10%.
49% 24-56 year olds want to emigrate. GDP has risen only .03% yearly.
Orders for SU 35 S canceled by Egypt, Algeria & Indonesia.
China only buying 10b cu’ /year (1/3 Europe).
    All these have infuriated oligarch’s.
    Enter Alexi Navalny-the next President??
Putin may not survive this summer.
