    Stray Notes:
    - You may remember Rock from Moony Man and Detective Boy Rock Holmes
    - A big fan of Lang's 1927 Metropolis is Joseph Goebbels
    - Tima survives, which is a great ending card, but also firmly de-legitimizes her power base!
    - Fifi is from both Tezuka's and Rintaro's Metropolis - Fifi is the robot in the lair, while in the movie Fifi is the robot that gives Kenichi Tima's heart
    - For those of you curious as to what exactly influenced Hitchcock, it's the Schufftan process, which I've linked below
    - If you're interested in another interpretation of Metropolis, you might find William Benzon's "The Song at the End of the World: Personal Apocalypse in Rintaro's Metropolis" a fascinating read - Benzon focuses on Rintaro's choice music, and briefly describes how it places family matters in the foreground

      unfortunately most people that this movie is a bit too complex for western viewer as its connected with more japanese history.
      movie story is hidden in symbolics that is hard to notice.

      I had seen the silent film on TCM and became a fan of it so title got my attention when I came across it on a DVD site. I loved the original Astro boy tv show which had episodes on youtube and of course Kenichi has his look. I love this movie too. When I first got it I watched it daily. Whoever picked Ray Charles' song "I Can't Stop Loving You" , hit it out of the part. Slow dreamy song playing over absolute destruction & annihilation. It was powerful.

    The problem with the Marxian interpretation of this well presented video is that it ignores the fact that there is an inherently right wing message to these films too. Hitler's favourite film was Lang's Metropolis! In the Rintaro version, the Marduks are said to look like Fascists, and it is telling that one of the front covers for the DVD features neither Kenichi nor Tima but Rock, depicted as a heroic protagonist. In fact Rock's warning about the danger of machines proves to be 100% right and matches the warning at the end of the original Manga. The warning about technology is inherently a right wing perspective which rejects techno-utopianism that even National Socialists indulged in. Tima's death at the end is not necessarily a death of imperial Japan and authority, but of the idea of technology as salvation which is an inherently progressive and left wing idea - one that, like Kenichi, people find it difficult to let go of.

    • @g-kems
      @g-kems Před 4 lety +1

      This could be a different ending in relation of the main explanation. In fact there were a lot of references to the Marxian class struggles between the vertical society express in the films.

      @@g-kems Yes there were clear and obvious references to class revolution - but is that revolution shown to be inevitable or derived from wisdom? the robot tries to talk sense to the revolutionaries and they kill him. Is this a pro-Marxist perspective?

      You're right, Metropolis was evidently one of Hitler's favourite films, but I can''t help but think that he seriously misinterpreted the actual story and intent of Metropolis. Thea von Harbou, who wrote both part of the script and the novelisaton of Metropolis (which I've not read), was a Nazi, but I think the film itself is not really a Nazi film, especially in its full form.
      Hitler could have seen himself in the Freder character, the heart between the hand (workers) and the mind (the bosses) but it would have been a superficial reading of Freder, totally missing the roles of both Maria (robot and real) and Rotwang in making Freder the main hero.

      @@backwardsbandit8094 good writing is more than wether the words are correctly written or are in the order they are supposed to be, it's also ( and more importantly ) about communicating a message or an idea, and part of that is making sure your ideas are clear. Using obscure words when more common synonyms are available is also bad writing, the only way this would fly is if the target audience of this video were exclusively film critics that (according to you ) clearly and easily understand these words, but by the content of the video and the medium it is posted on, this is obviously intended for a general audience.

    Don't watch metropolis. The original movie, at the time, was revolutionary and amazing but now it's shit. It's 80 years later. Don't waste your time.
