    I built this Clay Slab Roller a few months ago, since then it has had a workout and the roller has failed. The roller was made of plywood disks and with the amount of pressure put on the middle of the roller one of glue lines has given way. It was actually one of the original plywood glue lines that has failed. There is a video on my channel showing the roller build.
    The fix was straight forward. After re-gluing the roller I turned it down a little with the original jig I used to make the roller, and then glued it into a piece of PVC pipe. I'm confident this will work now as the pipe and plywood together make for a very rigid roller. If I have to do any more updates I will video it to keep any interested viewers up to date.
    I don't see any more issues though - but you never know!
    I had some sound issues, too much sibilance that I struggled to eliminate in post production. I use a Canon 5D mk2 and just added a Rode shotgun mic so if anyone has any advice on settings I would appreciate it.
    This wasn't the most exciting video but if anyone was to build a similar machine to this then they would need a heads up on the roller issue! I hope you enjoy the video anyway and as always I'm happy to answer any questions.

    Hey Neil
    Only just came across this on the channel today. Your height adjustment is exactly what I need for the rebuild of my drum sander. Right now I adjust the bed up and down, much easier to adjust the roller. Thanks for the idea and the inspirational channel.

    Thank you. I was searching for making a roller to make flakes with medium dough. I was thinking of two rollers and you have showed with a single roller. Thank you for the beautiful idea.

    PVC was a great idea. Could be applied to drum sanders and other tools that need true straight drum rollers. Really enjoying your channel. Thanks for posting friend!!!

      Thanks! I found it a little easier to talk to the camera this time - shame the audio was a little poor at the start though. I need to figure out the best settings for my new mic!

    • @GetHandsDirty
      @GetHandsDirty Před 7 lety

      I didn't pay too much attention when I watched it first because I was going after the words but now that I gave it a second listen I can hear some hissing/static noise. What is your mic?

    • @PaskMakes
      @PaskMakes  Před 7 lety

      It's a Rode Videomic (shotgun), I haven't had chance to figure it out properly yet. I think, if I remember rightly I put the volume up in camera when I was talking as the first recording seemed to come out low in volume, even though I was only a couple of meters away from the camera. I will work it out - I just need to spend some time with it.

    • @GetHandsDirty
      @GetHandsDirty Před 7 lety

      Humm... I have the Videomic Pro and it has a +20dB boost button. You can turn the volume in the camera completely down, with just one volume step and the mic will capture everything nicer with the +20dB. This way there is much less static noise than when recording at 0dB level at the mic and half way in the camera settings. The problem I guess is the sound board of the camera that might not be great. Just professional expensive DSLR's have good sound boards... But anyway, maybe your mic doesn't have that +20dB button but you can still improve the quality sound by getting the mic closer to the source. You can use some random tripod and get a way to attach the correct screw for the mic and position the tripod closer to you without interfering with the image. And get a high quality sound extension cable with the little male and female jacks (or go wireless but that might be too expensive for your case ahah).

    • @PaskMakes
      @PaskMakes  Před 7 lety

      Mine doesn't have the +20dB button, I decided to go for the intermediate version of this mic thinking it would be good for my needs but should have probably gone for the pro version. I will try it out some more and if I don't get any better results I will try an extension cable. Thanks for your help :)

    Seems as though the original could have used a thicker bar at the center, too, so it wouldn't have deflected as much. It's probably doing it less, but still doing it.

  • @zombyfellow

  • @williambirdwell1633

    i think if you used a thicker shaft you might not of had such a deflection in the drum. other than that it is a great job! Keep doing what you are doing, its GREAT!!

    • @PaskMakes
      @PaskMakes  Před 7 lety

      Thank you William! Although a thicker shaft would've helped I believe it would still flex unless I went with something substantially thick. I think this solution worked out well in the end - I just didn't realise quite how much pressure went on to the middle of the roller when I built it. :)

    • @PaskMakes

      The Slab roller was built for someone else, I don't work with clay myself! I believe the main thing they use it for is making tiles. :)

  • @JoeGP
    @JoeGP Před 7 lety +1

    so you reckon that pvc pipe will stop it from breaking again ? i kinda don't, try an iron pipe next time it fails

    • @PaskMakes
      @PaskMakes  Před 7 lety +2

      There is no way it will break again. The mass of the plywood roller fits that snuggly there is nowhere for the pipe to flex. For the pipe to break it needs to be able to bend to a certain point - which now it can't. ;)

    • @designfordeen
      @designfordeen Před 7 lety

      I also saw that a maker used a PVC pipe and filled it up with quick-dry cement to make it strong. This is what I wanna do too because this is easier for me.

  • @clydebalcom8252
