Calling the Shop that sold us a Broken Engine

- After buying an engine from eBay (which turned out to be broken) we call the shop to see if we could get a refund... they claim that we "over-revved it".
Then it's time to tear it down and see what actually went wrong.

@@FixingWithFriends The clock is tolled when they were first given notice. Anything after that is part of the claim process. They just don't want to honor their "warranty" which is really just marketing BS.
“These engines are hard to kill.” Because you know, salvages are in the business of selling replacement engines for ones that never die.
Facts…
MCM should have said,
"Well... the previous owner must have been very keen on killing it."
The fact that they were willing to allow you to make another mess of your garage, after already spilling coolant everywhere from their mistake of selling you a wrecked engine, is very telling as to how awfully they operate. No apology for causing you the hassle and spending so much time putting it into the Jimny. I’m glad Marty left them a lovely piece of artwork. They absolutely deserve it
"Just put some oil in the valves" would make a great shirt lol

I recently had the engine replaced in one of my vehicles (the only one I have financed out of 4) at the dealership I bought it from. My first time driving the vehicle after the swap, the engine catastrophically blew up and the entire car burnt to the ground. The dealership basically told me to pound sand. I lost tens of thousands because of their negligence so needless to say a suit is being pursued. I understand your frustration and you handled it gracefully. Thanks for the consistently great content

maybe they did compression test it, 2 years ago when they pulled the thing, before they swapped the head and forgot the update their inventory.
"How long ago did you get it?"
"Maybe let it sit for 2 days, and get back to us."
Your warranty claim is valid from the moment you report it. So letting it sit for 2 days wouldn't make any difference.
I take my words back, having another thought about it I realized that obviously the warranty claim gets valid when you do it officially. Which in this case is starting up a case or whatever it's called on eBay. So yes, the guy was trying to buy time.
“Sorry but it seems that you have hit your 30 days & your warranty has ended”

Thats exactly. What i said! "Oh, yoouve had it foorr 28 days.... let some oil sit in it over night then build it back up and work on it tomorrow and that should fix it." No kidding... I got a clutch for my mazdaspeed3 which was defective immediately. Cost me 1000 USD... 3 days of my own labor fluids and it even was so bad it destroyed a motor mount. The company refused to give a refund and demanded pictures. I couldn't understand how I could give pictures to something thats completely sealed inside a bellhousing. A month later I got my full refund but the car has sat with a defective clutch in it for 3 years. I refused to pull that clutch and spend that kind of money on a wear and tear item again. So that clutch cost me a car (there are other issues as well with the car not just the clutch) it's just not worth fixing. So I felt that what do I do now feeling so bad

Wrecker's eBay feedback is a good read 😂 Definitely a consistent issue throwing the blame on the customer and having a hard time admitting fault when there's an problem.
It's a lesson in how not to deal with customers.
These wreckers think they are so knowledgeable and they can just make up a whole story to make it look like whoever bought it was at fault.. but they never want to be held accountable for SHIT😂
You should make a shirt that says "Put some oil down the valves"
this needs more thumbs ups
Yes new shirt idea
where do they even plan on putting the oil? crack the valve cover and pour it onto the top of the valve guides?
@@kellyheath8547 The guy seemed to say straight into the cylinder (through the spark plug hole maybe) and let it soak overnight. But that wouldn't get any valves unless you turn it over, which would cause hydro lock if the valves are not stuck.
The guy sounded like a professional scammer. Warranty should start on date received as long as the item isn't damaged in shipping. The wrecker is scum. I wouldn't be surprised if they had no idea that the motor was sold to MCM until they saw the episode themselves. And by then it would have been after everything was "settled". So all they got by scamming was terrible reviews from all the MCM detectives out there who figured out who they were. They're guaranteed losing money all so they could hold onto ~$120.
They say all publicity is good publicity, but in this case I don't think that's correct.
No a shirt the reads “we kept the pliers” 😜

Maybe its the American in me but I 100% agree. Also after refusing to give a refund I would’ve done more then draw on the piston.

What a missed opportunity, Imagine if the wreckers had done the right thing from the first phone call and offered a refund. How good would that have played out for them with all Mighty car mods followers. Instead they will be looking at changing over to window cleaning or lawn mowing.
At least the local sign writer and stationery supplies company will get some business from the name change
Exactly. Shit happens in business, its how you handle it that counts. They could have had a lot of new customers beating down their doors. Cheapest advertising they ever paid for. Instead, the $700 engine could cost them everything
The wreckers in my hometown offer a warranty on all engines. If it doesn't work you just bring it back and exchange it.

I feel so bad for your troubles mates. eBay has a 30 Day Money Back Guarantee. You should’ve been able to open a case and noted the item was broken or missing parts and/or does not match description or pictures. The seller would have no other option but to accept your return and provide a full refund. For future reference, eBay gives you 30 days to file a claim for return.
Ebay has a 30 day window but paypal has a 180 day window. Even if the ebay one closes youve still got 6 months to claim your money back through paypal.
'mates' lol why on earth would you say such a thing
@@cliveramsbotty6077 mate or mates is a way of saying friend(s) in Australia
If sold as a running engine, and it isn't a running engine... a boat anchor was not in the description: its broken/not fit for purpose (for running a car).
eBay Australia has a money back guarantee on everything, found that out the hard way as a seller. Should have just cut the wrecker out of it completely and gone through eBay.
eBay would issue the refund themselves and then take the money from the sellers payouts from other sales.
I was impressed with the way EBay(EU) handled an issue I had with a dodgy part for my Gti. Seller was not being reasonable and beginning to make it all very personal. EBay took over and gave me a full refund.
Yep, both eBay and Paypal are really buyer focused with that kind of stuff. Very helpful and supportive. So much so that it can actually become a problem when you’re an honest seller dealing with shoddy buyers. There’s often no repercussions for buyers who make life hard for the seller. But when it’s the other way around there’s no issues.
That was indeed their mistake...and to the seller's credit and even though they proceeded to being total dirtbags, the first thing they said was: "You should go through ebay".
@@Malthus
Not quite, he said to use eBay messages. That puts you in touch with the seller, not eBay themselves. One benefit of that is you get a record of the conversation unlike with a phone call.

As someone who has been into Jimnys for years that's an utter joke. They're CONSTANTLY blowing head gaskets. If MCM can't get warranty what hope does anyone else have?
Jimny's constantly blow head gaskets, because they are constantly being overheated. Not many engines will handle abuse like that. Jimny's have probably one of the worst cooling systems i have seen in a stock car, swifts on the other hand have a great cooling system and are much more reliable.
No, you can't kill a Toyota 1UZ or 2L diesel. Hell I tried very hard to kill my 3UZ and it just laughed at me and kept skidding
But in Swift's - in the city car - they are really hard to kill indeed. Just put in oil regularly and dont run them without coolant.

$150. The eBay listing says it was $735.
Just about to do an 1.8t engine swap on an Audi TT. Cost over $1700 and already beyond 30 day return period though thankfully it does have a 1 year warranty. Wish me luck. By they way glad you mates have help and have fun, I'm doing mine by myself.
Sorry this stuff happened to you guys. I like how one of the lads can relate to us regular people that aren't rich, and says 'imagine if you were getting your car ready for a huge trip, and this happened. Spending $$$ on labour and the rest of it, dealing with a wrecker's that..". And I was thinking the same thing, about sinking money into a car and all this, and it just being so mentally physically and financially exhausting. It's just also cool that someone with money, can relate to us. I guess everyone relates to a 'struggle' no matter how much we've got.
Pissed myself when Moog is just starting the phone call to the wreckers and CZcams slaps in an ad for eBay!
i forgot there are ads on youtube
@@drink15 Same. Bought premium for music and cobra kai and it's been a while.
@@drink15 I wish there was ABP for the CZcams app! 🤣
To be fair, eBay is the only reason they got some of their money back.
You should roast them in the channel. Let everyone know who did not stand behind their GUARANTEE.
They just aren’t those dudes. No need to ruin someone’s livelihood over a $700 used motor. Even if they were dicks.
@@TheActualCaveman ruining scammers livelihoods?
Southport wreckers.
@@TheActualCaveman reporting factual information is just reporting factual information mate. If telling the truth ruins their life then whomevers life is ruined was doing the wrong thing. Lying to people and taking their money is not something that should be encouraged. What about the kid who needed a new engine for his car to keep his job? spent his savings on this thing and now has no money, no car and no job?
@@TheActualCaveman the thing is those wreckers will just keep doing what they’re doing if no one does anything about it though.
11:00 Best part. The boys being flabbergasted by the response they got and Marty trying to lighten the mood.
I'm so glad you got to keep the pliers.
Oh, and the $588 is nice also.
"When life gives you lemons, throw that shit in the bin and go buy an orange"
2JZ? HMMM? Orange any one?
“Thanks for calling, we will send over an SR20 to fit right in!”
But these engines never die!! Lol
Go on eBay. Reverse search sales of that engine. Find out wrecker. Let the Internet simmer.
barra swap it... I mean moog might want to put like a ladder or something on it, gotta watch that power to weight ;-) What do you mean it won't fit?
I worked at a dismantling facility for a few years and every engine we sold had the compression written on the valve cover for each hole, had heat tabs on the freeze plugs block and head or heads, and a stamp on the block and heads again of our logo to show it was not over heated from that point on and nobody swapped any parts over trying to get stuff for free. Happens A LOT unfortunately. Also tags all over it saying no oil caution... if you get an engine that does not have any of those things I just said done to it reject it because those steps are there to cover both parties and any company worth your time and money should show that they are trying to make sure everything is covered and that they stand behind the product they are selling you. Never stand in front of it because if the brakes fail then we'll you know.. lol that really sucks but it's a good lesson that I'm sure many people watching this video will be saved from happening to them! So thanks guys!!
You may have lost a motor but this video gave me and hopefully some other viewers a good laugh! Good luck with the next swap 🙌
Voice changer or not, Every wrecker answers the phone in the same depressed tone. It's so hard to talk to them after that.
After working in a wreckers, It's understandable, it's miserable.
Hard to tell they even modulated the voice without the sub text… lol
@@esnevip As soon as old mate answered I had a flash back from calling honda wreckers from back in the day. every one of them sounded the same.
I remember calling up to ask if a car had a part and the guy right off the bat was annoyed. I was like do you want to operate a wrecker business or not mf
If they hate their job that much, time to change careers. Plenty of Keen blokes put there to talk engines all day.
I remember swapping a 12a on my old RX7. Spent an entire day swapping the engine over on my own. Got it all hooked up and filled it up with new oil, new oil filter, started filling it with coolant and I had left the oil dipstick out and while I was filling up the collant I watched in horror as the combination of oil and coolant was pouring out the dipstick hole.
I packed up everything and pushed it in the garage and went and got drunk. I was so disapointed.
The next day I took it off again and called up the yard where I got the motor from, they sent another one the next week. No questions asked.
That one worked.
I'll willing to bet my testies they were Lebs?
I mean if they want to sell an engine "untested, with warranty" and give you a cheaper price on it then that's fine. Hell, charge an extra $100 to pay for a guy to screw around testing it and offer that to the customer. If they want to sell it "as is" and give you a dirt cheap price that's also fine.
It's telling lies to start with, and then not backing the warranty, that's what is shit. Sounds like your guys at least did the right thing and got you an new engine in a reasonable time.
To be fair it's a Rotary... so why would you expect it to work?
You would have been better off rebuilding it while it was out so you don't have to do it in 20,000K
Gronk
@@zyeborm This was back in the 90's, so things may have changed since then.
I was in the military and I got the engine through the auto club the base ran, so it was in their best interest to tow the line.
The replacement engine ran great for years afterwards, so it worked out in the end.
When companies don't warranty something and they find out the customer has a CZcams channel that could ruin them , it's a lesson learned hard
It's hard to see Moog in the mood he was in when they were diagnosing where the water was going.. looking forward what comes next, that's for sure
That wrecker sounds dodgy. Good on you guys for still going after it. It doesn't matter if it's a $4000 engine for a $700 engine, it's principal!
It’s the word of the wrecker/shop what matters, it’s all about that you’re right.
Places like that should be put on blast, and remain on blast until they can prove they've changed their ways, and stopped scamming people, or gone out of business.
It's one thing to accidentally sell a blown motor, and a total different thing to lie directly to your customers face about testing a motor that quite clearly couldn't have run, even after they'd been sent proof the engine had been blown for awhile. You just know, that if this is how sleazy they are when presented with proof of a lemon, that they're screwing over their customers on a regular basis. It makes you wonder if any of their products are what they claim them to be...
@@xblackdog Exactly. The guy on the phone seemed average. I figured he had the responses he did because 9 times out of 10 it probably is the customers fault and he needs proof and has to make sure before the customer starts ripping the engine out and shipping it back. But, as the video progressed... Tested my ass. How the hell did that even make it out the door. Sleazy AF.
@@BrianOfAteionas I wouldn't agree tbh. He seemed like a scummy fuck in the phone to me. He immediately went on the offensive and tried to gaslight Moog. That isn't the first time he's dealt with calls like this.
You guys are being so nice about it. The viewers are absolutely hammering the Google map listing for the business though, and rightly so 😂
Whats the wreckers name lol
@@aaronweatherley9064
You won't be buying an AU or BA Turbo engine from them then?
@@chadrilcon1024 if I do I'll make sure I drop oil down the cylinders first 👌

Im glad you kept the pliers... make sure you use them in every episode for the next 30 days
22:44 I approve of Marty’s “little” gift.
A "funny face".
@@petera4476 it was a direct quote. Putz
"We steam clean the engine...." , that absolute shite of an excuse should be cause to shut that wrecker down. Sadly you gentlemen had to go through this to remind us all that doing a compression test on a used engine is a must before starting an install.
I would recommend to put in a volvo T5 engine. I’m from Sweden and have built many cars and have Always used that engine. It’s an indestructible beast
Good point. Do the compression test before installing it next time. It is a worthwhile effort to avoid this level of disaster. The spark-plug condition was a serious pointer too.
that wrecker guy just tried to gaslight the shit out of you.
