    To any beginner discouraged about how their dovetails are coming out as you fit them together, always complete the projects. Water based glue will actually swell the joint a tiny bit, a lot of gaps I’m upset about aren’t even visible by the time they’re glued and planed flush

    • @JeanMinutile

      I'll add that finishing them make them pop and kinda hide their flaws too ;-)

      Practice makes perfect. make it a goal to cut & fit a set of 3 dovetail joints every day, before you know it you can cut & fit a box with beautifully done dovetails in under an hour.. if you are disciplined enough to do a set a day for practice , you'd probably be as good as these guys in a month or two.

      @simonwellicome4028 Před rokem

      Go look at Rob Cosman (elsewhere on YT) for his excellent hand tool dovetail technique videos. His approach will get you really satisfying dovetails straight off the saw - if not first time, then within a very few tries.
      I tested Rob’s claim about this by attempting my first dovetails using a battered ‘Black & Decker WorkMate’ knockoff of a folding bench for my work holding, a work site panel saw for my cutting and some not great plywood for my material. The only other tools I used were a combination square, a 1:7 dovetail layout ‘square’, a Stanley knife for layout lines and 1/2” chisel. My cynical, disbelieving self thought “If your claims about this method are true, then it’ll work in crap circumstances as well as good.” The results left me gobsmacked. The joint went together first time, straight off the saw (i.e. no trimming to adjust), lined up, with the boards automatically square to each other, was self supporting and looked good (despite the habit of less-than-perfect plywood to delaminate when you’re sawing its edges). I’d been learning woodworking for perhaps a year, & I’m still a w/e woodworker not a full timer.
      After that, @briangustin3745 is right: just practice stuff. Make stuff that doesn’t have any other purpose except allowing you to practice your techniques.

    Very nice and I was blown away that you cut the front off with a hand saw. There’s countless videos on how to get this right with a table saw, much less with a hand saw.
    I gift like this is something that I sure your Pastor and his family will cherish for generations.

  • @pjaldo7073
    @pjaldo7073 Před rokem +5

    The timing of this couldn't be more perfect. I am an amateur woodworker from the Philippines and I tried my first handcut dovetail a week ago using Lauan which is very accessible to me. It's very inspiring to see woodworkers I look up to, actually use the wood I can work with. ❤️❤️

  • @reaper060670

    I love this man. U have some really nice tools. I like to use the hand saw now and again but I'm not skilful enough just yet. I really enjoy using hand planes. I recently bought some cheaper hand planes to get started with. They're well made for planes so cheap and the soles are true too. I need to work more on the edging of my blades though.
    Phillopeno Mahogany look very soft wood to work with. My issue is here where I live it's very hard to get hands on good timber like these species. I live in Ireland.
    It's not easy to get even some Ash anymore. We used ASH for well over 140 yrs to make the HURLEY's we played our national sport with but I don't think it so easy to get ash now. Isn't Ash a decent hardwood?
    I really like the look of ur workshop my brother. I started working with wood about 18 months ago. I had to fix some old doors at home nad it would kill me to spend that kind of money when I could easily fix them. Well that was my thinking anyways.. LOL
    Would it be ok to make one of these boxes out of cheaper PINE? I was asked to make one for a family member bcos she wants to keep some of her sons medals and things in it. He recently became a father himself and I think she wants to keep it for his son.
    I'm not good enough just yet to cut dovetails so I was thinking on 45 mitre corners with some nice splines in there? I know it's not the classy finish u have here but for me it will be fine. I use power tools as well bcos I don't have rebate planes or hand tools like that. I will be looking for the video u said u made one and are still using.
    My apologies for my usual longwinded comment. I say usual bcos when I begin talking about woodworking I cannot stop my friend.
    Take care and keep up the great content. I sub'd & liked and I will be looking for more of ur videos soon.
    Thanks for the inspiration man..
    God go with u brother

    About the plugs to fill the holes left by the grooves: I'm just a hobbyist, but I find it much easier to compensate by adjusting the pins to avoid holes all together than to make plugs with matching grain direction and all that. Perhaps a topic for a future video? In any case: many thanks and best greetings from Norway.
