We did the whole minimalist thing on Atticus one and we had some amazing experiences on that boat. But the desire to enjoy the comforts of modern amenities was always with us and we experienced a strong pull to someday move ashore.
Our goal with Atticus 2 is to build a floating home where with fewer compromises and where we can raise our family for years to come, and where we don’t feel like we’re missing out by not moving ashore.

Love the “Oso Cam”!!! Still the cutest dog ever. ❤
Don’t worry, co-sleeping isn’t a bad habit she has developed. It’s instinctual for her to be close to you, it’s how all other mammals sleep and how they stay alive! You’re doing a great job ❤
Co-sleeping is very common in Europe.
@@boatMatthias co- sleeping Is the only way for some mamás! Don't worrie!
@@boatMatthias Also extremely common in East Asia.
It felt way more natural to cosleep for me plus we both slept so much better. My son had no problem moving to his own bed after awhile either. You guys are doing great!
I always enjoy your videos and appreciate your honesty. A couple remarks: The wire size (3/0?) for the jump to the switch was completely unnecessary. Recall that wire resistance is proportional to length and inversely proportional to the cross area (R = constant * L/A ). With such a short length like 5", you would have been just as fine with 1AWG.
I suggest getting a smart BMS. I can connect to my BMS via bluetooth and read it out via RS485 and a raspi.
In an emergency, you can by-pass the BMS (preferable with a smart shunt like the one Victron sells)
Lawrence is the man! I’m so glad you had a good friend to help out! Love love love the Oso-cam!
The questions don't make anything easier in these situations D. 😮 the responsive answers Jordan provided have been awesome. Please carry candles moving forward, candle heaters are efficiently effective in small spaces.
Shut EVERYTHING OFF Then turn on 1 NEEDED item at a time until the system fails to confine the issue.
Another great video. The explanation of capacitors and in-rush current was very well done. The fact that you share your difficulties, as well as your joy, makes it easier to relate to you and your family. Another reason your videos are so compelling is the intelligence. both mentally and emotionally, demonstrated by both of you. Then you add in the extreme high quality of the videos and sound and you end up with one of the best channels on CZcams. For this older guy, you ARE the best channel on CZcams. Also - I loved the segment with the camera mounted to Osso! It would be great to see a little more of that in the future!
🤗 thank you very much!
We hope that you take the challenges that come calmly. There are things in this life that is out of your control. You did right. The alternative was to call your neighbor and ask to stay on his boat. You will find that people will help you solve the problem or find a solution. We hope that you guys are OK and that life moves forward. Welcome to parenthood with all the joy and happiness.
With our best wishes,
Raul and Joan Bryan, Texas
Jordon you are an excellent teacher! Desiree your support and encouragement of Jordan is “invaluable” to your family. There is a proverb that says, “a wise woman builds her house and with her own hands a foolish one tears it down”… (you are building yours beautifully). Keep up the good work little family and thanks for being such a positive inspiration to all of us, young and old 🥰.
Watching Jordan stay so calm under such circumstances makes me feel like I need to do something about my attitude.
Me too!
I was thinking the same thing.
Attitude is somewhat incorrect term as it is an end result. We need to start changing our habits, behavior and perception. It leads to change in attitude.
Me too 😬
Remembering myself at that age, yea, ide be loosing my sh*t
Beautiful little Isa is slowly growing. She’s smiling more and more for Mommy and Daddy
Great job teaching us about electricity. Isa was super adorable helping you research! Way to go mom and dad!
As a daughter of an electrical contractor who has no understanding of electricity your explanation of your electrical system was easy to understand. My dad never thought girls could understand such things so I just knew when you got shocked it hurt and don’t do it again. Thanks to you my understanding has greatly increased.
When did he get shocked? I must have missed that part.
Excellent timing that this potential calamity happened in a marina with a friendly boat next door.
You can say that again!
@@ProjectAtticus Excellent timing that this potential calamity happened in a marina with a friendly boat next door!!
The kindness of friends. Word to the wise: would not have filmed/shared footage of your 'break in'. Yes, someone who wants to break in will find a way, but in this case a friend extended themselves to very worthwhile souls so discretion in matters like this goes a long way. Super great explanation of the electrical problem & your system. Eyes can sometimes glaze over, but your humour and clarity were the bomb. Best. ❤❤❤❤
I LOVE Oso cam. Great synopsis and solution to a tricky job. I too am looking forward to when you sail again 🙂
Both of my children slept with me and breast fed well into their early years. I loved sleeping with my babies and they grew up to be independent, confident children. My view is, do what works for you and what feels right!.
Your both wonderful loving caring parents. I love the way you speak to each other, such lovely communication. Best channel I’ve seen in a LONG time!
Your content is great.
X
Great watching your little family evolve. I wish all parents realized that children go along with your dreams and culture, while meeting their needs, of course. You don’t have to stop living adventures. There are definitely difficult seasons, but you handle them with the best patience, love, and grace that you can, but you keep making your own sunshine and make necessary changes as needed. Having a solid family mission will keep everything in perspective to make necessary changes or decisions.
I like the addition of the Osso cam!
Well folks MacGyver may have been cancelled, but have no fear Jordan is here to save the day! Thanks for the electrical lesson.
Jordan thanks a lot for sharing the BMS problem. All of us upgrading (or planning to) to Lithium will benefit from that experience. Having a possibility to fall back on a backup battery (starter battery or a separate one) is vital. Imagine if that failure happened while sailing in the night in strong winds and current and fog, in heavy traffic and shoals (you know Mr. Murphy).
One thing you should mention is that we can't simply switch to a Lead acid backup battery and continue using the same charge profiles from the charger, solar or alternator, as they all have been programmed for Lithium, not lead acid. I mean we probably could, but not for too long otherwise we could damage the backup battery. I'm no expert in boat electricals, but I think there is something here.
I am sure that a spare management system would be expensive, but you need a power station or two to run some lights, the refrigerator and other necessities for short periods of time if the start battery discharges in which case you won't be able to use the engine. We have a couple in our home for power outages and we take the larger one in our camper when on the road as it has come in handy several times. A resister circuit around the relay switch is a great idea. At this point, one would assume that Jordan is somewhere between a master electrician and an electrical engineer...
In a jam you can bypass the bms. Now you are the BMS so it's a temporary solution that you have to use caution. Being careful not to over charge or let cells go to low.
Loved this video ❣️ Isa was so animated with the cutest little face ever! Plus the Oso cam was adorbs. Love you guys. 😁🤗💞
Amazing! Thank you for the videos.
Loved the Osso cam. Glad you are getting the system back up. Take care ❤️
Great video, very instructive! Thank you.
National Geographic and Popular Mechanics in the same episode. Well done.
Great explanation Jordan. All the best.
Looks beautiful out there .
Hope everything goes well with power to the boat.
Thank you
For the videos.
Love That Oso Cam!! Great work as always Project Atticus!!
Another cool episode featuring Super Dad diagnosing and overcoming technical obstacles. Better to have these problems in port to realize the need for redundancy. There is a reason airliners fly with redundant systems as well. It’s part of the old Boy Scout Motto: Be Prepared. Nice work you two!
Great program guys as usual 🤓
Nice temp solution, Jordan! Well done! 👍👍
Great job on explaining the situation. Keep up the awesome videos, thank you sharing
I love following you all! ❤
I've been watching you both for yrs now an congratulations ...on the wonder you've both brought in to this 🌎... We love you 💜
Hope the new BMS gets you all sorted out! great episode! Thanks for sharing! Be safe Atticus crew!! 👍👍
I love the fact that even tho issues arise, you troubleshoot and solve them.. good job 👍
Credit to you both in dealing with another situation! That's what adventures are all about!
My gosh you guys, this has to be one of THEEEE BEST CZcams episodes of anything ever. Absolutely amazing shooting, editing, content. I love following your adventures anyways but this episode was just awesome. Great job guys because I know it ain't easy with a tiny human to care for. xx
Every time you show your cabling management, "Jordan ! I HATE you !"😀 it is so good and easy to trace. Then when I look at mine , I want to throw up 🤫. As usual great job . Hope this solves the issue/ Thanks again for allowing us to look over your shoulder (yea my wife HATES it when I look over her shoulder).
I’ve been doing solar setups for a while now and I always opt for LiFePO4 batteries that have a built-in BMS. I’ll tie all batteries into the system via a Lynx Bus Bar then a shunt followed by a Lynx Distribution. In this fashion, if one battery has a fault and is disconnected by its internal BMS, there is still power available from the other batteries.
So I see you are enjoying my little island . Hopeyou stay longer . Thanks for the videos .
Great job describing how you worked the electrical problem. Glad you keep calm and a good attitude in a very difficult time. Love watching you and your family on the many adventures.
Hope everything is going well with Isabella!! Happy sailing and happy life with love from Lagos Portugal ❤
A lot of great problem solving! What I took from this is having the right attitude goes a long way. I'm seriously gonna take a page out of you alls book. ❤
Thank you guys for always gocing us the details . I appreciate the knowledge you share about everything. Issa is growing so darn fast!! Osso cam is always a win! I know all thos work is frustrating but soon yall will be on the move. Just wait until Issa has her first sail ooh what a wonderful day that will be. Btw you're both doing a good job
Omg electrical work stresses me out so much, and im just watching passively through a screen!
Love the Oso-Cam! And you! Hope the new BMS is exactly what you need to fix your electrical problem. Safe travels ❤️
Amazing vid. Esa is growing up fast. You 2 have learned so much since your mangroves of Panama. Blessings for stable boat living!
Great one. The fact that you were able to solve the problem without panic. Cool, calm, and collected! Not too many bleeps👏. As always have fun be safe and see you next week!
So much to love about this video. From your great explanation of what you needed to do to fix your electrical system and how it all works, beautiful shots of the the area you're visiting, to Oso the camera pup. Wow!
PS Oso's ears and shaggy fur look so funny on his doggy cam at the beach lol
So proud of the Atticus family and the way you get along through thick and thin!
Flipping those switches on Lawrence's boat reminded me of flipping the switches in Jurassic park 1 to turn on the power 😂
OMG! Love the Oso cam,how cute and what a lucky dog! I enjoy every episode and was one of the first subscribers. Oh boy how your family, boat and adventures have grown. I'm living for it! Great episode 👏 👌
Thank goodness for issues. They make great episodes!
Great video . Was very interesting as we are trying to figure out our new boat.
great episode, keep em coming
Another great video!! Electrical issues are the worst, appreciate the thorough explanation about the issue. Glad to see the 4 of you enjoying a "day off" as if that ever really happens with a baby and a live aboard!!
Loved the Oso cam! And always love you guys talking about the ups and downs in a realistic but overall positive way.
Sorry to hear about the problems, its always interesting finding unexpected failure modes. Pretty poor BMS by the sounds of it. Failed BMS (and indeed cell) was on my list planned failure modes so split the batteries up and installed two BMS for this reason.
Enjoy the many wonders of the world with your sailing craft as you can. Another stepping stone of life, one that may find your family searching for the next stone. Stay safe.
Interesting electrical issue - and frustrating! In my experience inrush current is a lot - but typically not as many orders of magnitude as you were discussing. I see this often in commercial HVAC, where a compressor may be rated for 15 amps nominal - but the inrush current on startup may be 50-60 amps for example. Have you considered having a multimeter on board with a non-contact amp-probe that has the ability to measure inrush amps as well as continuous current? That can be a highly useful diagnostic tool in these situations, and can help you spot an issue before it becomes a real problem (like by melting contacts or capacitors!). My Fieldpiece SC440 will do that and its less than $200. Something to think about.
I love the Captain Oso cam! 🤣🤣
I wouldn't think the bms would have mechanical contacts? I would think it would be solid state mosfets...
Simple. I love your channel! Been watching since "Atticus Updates" and love it now more than ever!
YOU are Doing a FANTASTIC Job!!!!! Beautiful!!!!
Because the electrolyte in Li batteries is a volatile esther the BMS is always going to fail safe to complete shut down. You're right to have a redundant system in place for the eventual failure. Clark on Temptress has created a very cool "bank manager " combiner that allows less fragile, lower energy density old school battery types to coexist with Li banks and share charge. Might be worth a look!
Brilliant!
Great job you two! I had the same issue with my BMS.
Hi guys, your baby girl is so beautiful absolutely gorgeous. You should be so proud of her. She is growing up so fast looking around see what’s happening around that. Love your videos. Keep up the good work Cliff from Logan city Queensland Australia 🇦🇺 from the big island 🏝️
Any chance the washing machine or whatever was the last thing added could be the cause?
This!
Wonderful video. Your graphics rock! So glad you guys found a close refuge. 😎💕😎💕😎💕😎
Great job, Jordan, in explaining the problem with your electrical system and how to fix it. I've been working on my solar system and now adding the Victron battery monitor. Sometimes, I find it hard to figure it all out, but eventually, I do. My system is not as elaborate as yours, but it works well on my PSC 34. I enjoy watching your videos. I, too, will be starting my own adventures, sailing to Newfoundland. Fair Winds. Blessing to you all!
Wow Jordan, you had my head spinning with all of your explanations but you were very explanatory. I thought maybe a Mouse might have nibble too much😂 gosh is ESA so lovable and she starting to develop a little personality. Desiree, love to watch your motherly instincts. Maybe someday the technology will be even better but it will be a lot simpler to operate. Little Oso is so full of energy and love to see him romp all over the place. Glad you have a lot of camaraderie around the places. Watched you from the beginning and you seem like family to me now. As always thanks so much for including us in a little bit of your life❤ Anchors Aweigh, by now.😊
You guys are doing a perfect job, perfect... because you are providing a great life, loving and working thru the issues. No giant issues; just the regular life issues of folks who live outside the box. Better than perfect really(for your life), because you are able to make a more beautiful life than the life you could have experienced if you would have "just lived in the box" The box just was not big enough for you. Bravo!
You are working so hard to make this a reliable home. Glad you all are taking moments to enjoy the beauty around you.
So when do you think you will sail away?
Super well done Jordan. Mama, you’re gorgeous. And little Isa is growing by the minute. Oso 🐶 ❤!
Great video! You have a beautiful family! ❤😊
Nice video Jordan. Good move on the power system switch.
Oso cam is back!! Sweet!! 👍👍🐶🐶
wow perfect.
should teach this to all sailors.
Hope all is well. Hi guys. We’re in Malta for the summer. Hope you’ll still be there. Love to take a photo with you guys and meet Isabella 💖❤️
Missed yall last week. Keep up the good work. See ya next next week or the one after.
Loved the Ossovision!
You can consider the timing of that blackout really the luckiest possible. Could have had it on some remote anchorage or during the Atlantic crossing. That wudabin fun.
Your daughter is beautiful!!! Love the blowing bubbles and her research abilities.
You two are good people !
Great episode ❤
Have you been working out Jordan? I can almost see a six pack on you.
Life is always a compromise. Your mobile platform allows you to travel, but it’s systems are fragile on a good day. And living is much more stable, but you also won’t be on a non stop adventure.
So, look at the bright side. You are now a Jack of all trades and pretty darn good at all of them.
You're down on house batteries. Turn everything off except for one item, disconnect your new appliance and see what happens. Inverter should show input voltage. That's my guess.
Really lovely you tube sailing couple in Malta right now ……… Sailing Fair Isle. Thanks for this episode. You open your hearts so easily.
Excellent Excellent episode great teacher
Love your attitudes 😊.
Lets see last thing you were doing was hooking up the new washer?? go back and check your connections possible short. reverse connection, disconnect washer could be to big of load on system.
Hey Dad and mom WOW I love the info on the power failure I learnt something today,
The baby is growing and gives us a video on her
Great video, once again. Love the "dog cam." I do have one small concern though, but I have decided not to mention it as it makes me sound like an old fuddy-duddy. Maybe I will in the future if I keep seeing it. You all are the best.
2:15 "Dad I've been trying to figure this out for two daze?" "What was the last thing you "fixed' son?
Sounds like a short. So turn off all of the breakers, then start turning them back on until it happens again and find the short.
