On the first episode of Car Trek Series 6, AutoTempest challenges the guys to buy three cars each, for less than $30,000, to make their ultimate dream $30k garage. It must have a sports car, a luxury sedan, and a capable off roader, and they should represent the guys' favorite country of manufacture.
Tyler immediately went America all over everyone, with a 2000 Pontiac Trans Am WS6, Ed bought a questionably maintained 1999 Porsche 911 from Germany, and Freddy's Japanese car roots led him to none other than a 1995 Toyota Supra. The guys were then given challenges to see how much power they actually made, and if that power could be put down to the ground. Hold on to your butts.

The Firebird Trans Am WS6 may be one of the best bang for your buck sports cars out there. Because it's based on the Camero platform of the same years, you can find plenty of aftermarket suspension components to make it handle quite well and you get some really impressive horsepower and torque figures because LS. LS motors are the gameshark of engines, as Mr. Regular says. If you have one, you just win. Plus, you get to revel in the carry-over 90's nostalgia for just a little bit longer, which is nice.
It's not really "based" on the Camaro. They are both built on GM's F Body platform which actually has roots all the way back to 1967.

Agreed! 4th gear is 1:1, not 3rd. Wouldn’t using 3rd gear for the dyno pull make the hp seem more favorable?

I had a black 01 WS6 for several years, worst car I ever owned. The rear pinion seal started leaking about every 5k miles, the spark plug wires liked to pop off at random, one of the catalytic converters collapsed internally and had to be replaced under warranty and there was a hose for the emission controls up inside the nose that kept coming off and kicking the check engine light about once a week. I miss it though, it looked great, it sounded great, and it was a blast to drive. You just had to plan on some downtime.
I totally agree....and it's also not because I am biased aswell and have a 97 T/A with the 6-speed.

He guys, great show! Really enjoy it. I have a suggestion (looking at you Tavarish), if you added an episode # to every title it would be easier for us to binge watch your series. Can't find the rest of the 355 build, 3r etc... Not a complaint, just in the middle of devouring all three of you guys content. Keep up the good work!
410whp isn't a bad number for that WS6. Probably 500ish at the motor. Was running rich up top and idle was off. With a better tune, probably another 20-30 hp. Hoovie definitely got the best car for the money, without cheating.

Came here just to find these comments. It's absolutely ridiculous for the title to state "Dirt Cheap", when they're being purchased for 10 to 20k. For someone to think that purchasing a vehicle for that kind of money is cheap, it's really telling of the type of person they are, and what mindset they have. Put guys like these into the life of any random average Joe, and they'll off themselves within the first month. They couldn't handle not being able to buy anything, and everything they want, and always getting their way. No joke my 2001 automatic BONE stock WS6 ran a 13.2@106 with nothing but the rear tire pressure lowered to 25psi
Those old f body lt1s and ls1s were faster than advertised, no doubt. I had a 94 z28 and a 2000 SS. Both definitely not "around" 300 hp

For any of you that are curious, when Freddy first got his Supra it only made about 120 hp to the wheels.

It's a good deal but Corvette C5s are at their 20 year low. Just got an 01 for $9,000 and the Corvette can handle on a curvy road better. I'm not a drag guy though so clear bias.

A 996 with a factory aero kit is relatively rare. It has the Sport Design wheels, which are relatively valuable. I have a "plain" manual coupe, in much better condition, and I am jealous.

Plus it has the X51 powerkit and a limited slip. The LSD was only available in 1999 and 2004 on the 40th Anniversary. Almost nobody ordered the X51. This is an extremely rare car that has been horribly neglected.
That is a super rare car, and he paid about half what it would bring in an auction, he can find some deals, its awesome!

When the ws6 walked that Supra I felt complete joy because I grew up in a world that idolized the Japanese sports cars while I was left alone to idolize the LS 350. It wasn't for notthin

if you take into account drivetrain loss, the trans am does make around 540 at the crank

Nah, clearly the tune is off running rich, might have some head gasket issue pulling coolant, or something. I would have pulled the plugs while at the dyno and invested in new ones. As well as a tune while there lol
And he clearly states “Third gear is my 1:1” and proceeds to dyno the car….4th gear, like almost every other American car, is the 1:1 gear ratio. I’m sure that would effect the dyno numbers one way or the other.
@@wfomotorsports9122 unless it has some oddball unforeseen aftermarket transmission, 1:1 would be correct…with an automatic. That should have the Tremec T56 6 speed from the factory. With a 1:1 4th gear

that ws6 probably had 500 once upon a time, but it the tire old ls might be due for a freshening up, but 410 to the wheels is still a fun ride. throw a turbo on that ls, and that would have been a completely different story, even from a stock bottom end ls.
The WS6 was the best car in the episode, stayed in the rules, extremely reliable platform, clean appearance, super cheap maintenance. If I hadn't gotten such a deal on my C6, I would have looked for a WS6. The Supra was a cheat, my mkIII Supra TT I got for 16k in this market would have been a better comparison. If you're going to bring your own car that you've put tens of thousands of dollars in, then why even be part of this video?

There's a dude in town with the American variant of my car that I met at a local car meet with an insta, I think he's under 'bald Supra guy' or something like that. He's got the 7M-GTE, I had the 1G-GTE JDM version. Decent platform for the time, but no headroom, especially compared to the 1JZ/2JZ platform that released shortly thereafter. And absolutely zero aftermarket....

I was rooting for Tyler in the drag race. Mostly, after when Freddy explained, that the Supra was originally a NA 2JZ GE and he had to spend lots of money and work to make it a turbo one. But in the main point V8 is V8 in hell too... ;-)
Just goes to show you that a 10k Firebird down on power is superior to a decked out modified Supra. lol

My suggestion for a challenge format with such junkers:
(First of all everyone genuinely has to buy the cars after the challenge has been set)
1. Endurance race for only a few points to get all the faults known and any failures to fail: the one who makes it the furthest wins. I suggest mandatory cool-down laps every 3 laps or something like one lap with a (GPS-confirmed) speed limit. That's because even brand new road cars can't take sustained track abuse.
2. Everyone gets their cars fixed by professionals, like properly fixed (the necessary stuff for it to work, not cosmetic etc.). The challenge is: lowest price wins.
3. A proper race. Medium distance. Or maybe two sprint races (three if tied).
4. Everyone gets the chance to upgrade their car in one area. Maybe don't let the winner of the stage 3 race upgrade at all, 2nd place gets one are to improve, and the last place gets two areas to improve.
5. Final race after improvements.
6. As OffRoadRN suggested: sell the cars, maybe at auction. Best price for the car wins.

The amazing thing to me is, in 20 months 3 CZcamsrs (with a fair bit of help) have put out 6 seasons of Car Trek that in many ways are equal to (and sometimes better) than the CHM Top Gear (though not as good as some of the Top Gear Specials) so a massive tip of the cap from car lovers everywhere for putting out this great content.
