    Without a suspension (more than the air in those tires) you can't really go much faster. That engine is fine. Put a trolling motor on the back. You'd have a reasonable boat. I was really impressed at how those tracks stayed on.

    • @andyd2960
      @andyd2960 Před 5 lety +2

      If they do a little work to the tracks they won't need a trolling motor.

  • @slateslavens

    on a vehicle like this with an open differential driving the tracks, apply a bit of brake to both tracks to get them to both drive at the same time.

  • @bluemoondiadochi
    @bluemoondiadochi Před 5 lety +7

    i think it's a very good vehicle for it's intended application - access to remote areas for fishing, on a budget. for this, i believe that cheapness of the engine overcomes its lack of power.
    as for slowness, i think it's ok, as moving 30km into a remote area is quite enough, and it's builder probably either fishes locally or uses a trailer.
    it could be even possible to use it as a fishing boat, just anchor it and fish.
    my remark could be that it has no protection from elements and for example extra lights, but that's easy to install, to be honest.
    overall, it looks like an excellent vehicle!

    Yes. It is a bit crude, and probably rides rough, but he could set it up to use low pressure atv tires and soften his ride considerably. It would be much like a sprung suspension and also give a little more traction on uneven terrain, I would think. I like it. It is probably more robust than a lot of factory, 20,000 dollar rigs. It's is not cramped up for 4 people, either.

    If you lightly brake the spinning track the transmission will start to drive the other side, it's one of the reasons tractors used two brake pedals. I would want some roll bars if for no other reason than to put a roof on it and possibly some canvas sides, open topped may look fine but wet leads to cold and miserable, and that is not fun.

BUT A LIFAN IS A ADEQUATE ENGINE. AN ARGO ALSO BARELY MOVES IN WATER, AND DEPENDS ON RIBBED TIRES TO PADDLE IT - WHICH HE COULD HAVE EASILY SOURCED. ARGOS ALL TOO OFTEN DEPEND ON WINCHES, ATVS OR ANOTHER ARGO TO PULL THEM UP ON LAND OR OUT OF ICE, BUT THEY DO HAVE A TRANS WITH A DIFFERENTIAL LOCK GIVING YOU 6 OR 8 WHEEL DRIVE... BUT AT 18 TO 23hp, THEY ARE FAR UNDERPOWERED FROM THE 2 STROKE 45HP MACHINES OF YESTERYEAR.

      The narrator said that the builder made the tracks from conveyor-belt material. You just might find that at a junkyard, or at your local farm supply store. Grainger and McMaster-Carr also sell belt material through their catalogs.

    • @orionfleming6783
      @orionfleming6783 Před 5 lety

      Go to an old mill auction. They have all kinds of conveyor belt material, there are also people that go to auctions and buy stuff and really sell it. If you ask your local junk man he might know the person your looking for, also ask a farmer. They have a lot of belts in there equipment that would be heavy enough and would know of junk dealers near you.

  • @dr.ofdubiouswisdom4189

    Very clever & super effort indeed, but snow & water will be the most of anything it will hold up in. I don't see that track holding up for any real usable service life. Now a 6 wheel drive variant and a better budget would be much more forgiving.

      2 reinforced rubber conveyer belt straps (like in a factory) with hand bent and welded brackets on the tire side and a flat bracket with a paddle welded to it on the outside sandwiched and bolted together. at least 1 or 2 brackets having the rubber doubled up where the ends meet on the track. I'm working on designing my own. trying to find a set of 8 matching wheels and tires on a budget that will work in the US is a pain in the ass. lol

      @0xsergy Před 5 lety

      @kaelenhughson9579 Před 3 lety

      A "skid steer" diff is just a regular "open" diff. No limited-slip/posi-track, no locker. Just regular open diff. An open diff will apply power to whatever wheel has the LEAST resistance. If you apply the brake to one side, the un-braked side has less resistance so it gets the power causing the turn. This is how this machine works, thus the two brake levers. Hydrostatic skid steering like in a Bobcat is a completely different system.
