  • Dyspraxia or DCD (developmental coordination disorder) is a type of neurodivergence commonly associated with clumsiness and difficulty with motor tasks.
In this video I'm explaining what dyspraxia is, what causes it, the diagnostic criteria for dyspraxia and some tips for improving your motor skills.

finding out this exists after struggling with tying shoes, riding bike, writing etc. my entire childhood, is a weird kind of relief and upset that noone picked up on it.

On my teacher training course, we were tasked with creating a leaflet on a disorder and my group got dyspraxia. I’ve already been diagnosed with ADHD and I remember my specialist did mention she thinks I could also have dyspraxia. I never really looked in to it until now and boy, I think she was on to something!

Thanks for this video. My son finds it really hard to do things that the kids are expected to learn easily. Which ultimately as an adult don’t really matter as u can just modify those things - like not riding a bike or playing sports that require high coordination or using lace less shoes!but being a kid is hard with school making things harder sometimes!

I have dispraxia, and a lot of things that you said happened to me. It took me about 3 years to learn how to ride a bike, I was older than usual when I figured it out. I was also in speech therapy for a while as a child, because I simply couldn’t learn to talk right. I can understand the words, I just stutter and have trouble talking without messing up. This still happens, and it’s hard for me to talk sometimes when I’m stressed, because I stutter every few seconds, and also mess up what I’m saying, or accidentally say something completely different. I also do fencing, and in practice, we do something called ladder drills, we basically lay down a ladder and run through it using specific patterns. A lot of the time, when I end up doing it wrong, and someone tries to tell me how to do it right, my brain just can’t convey the information to my legs, and I end up messing up because of it, and I often can’t take in too much information at once.

Some examples include- poor balance (I still have trouble with bike riding and refuse to ride bikes, can’t ice skate or roller skate, etc.), messy hand writing that sometimes I can’t read, I’ve definitely had moments a lot where I’ve been clumsy sometimes even skipping steps and almost falling, and probably a few other things that I can’t put to words at the moment.

I have dyspraxia symptoms as a 57 year old but I have not been diagnosed as in the 1960's it would contributed to my epilepsy. I have many problems in my life with fine motor skills such as make up, I never learned how to ride a bicycle, etc. It is harder now to get an appointment with a GP. I have a letter that I wrote (typed) with my help of my BATIAS support worker. I also have undiagnosed dyslexia which I have a form to complete to get funding for my dyslexia diagnosis which affects me a lot in my day to day life.

i’ve been looking into the possibility of me having dyspraxia lately, i think it’s highly likely given that i’m autistic and have adhd. it look me way longer than other kids to learn how to tie my shoes and ride a bike, and even today i usually leave my shoes tied and slip them on because it takes a while for me to tie them. my handwriting is horrible and it takes me a long time to write things down. i’m extremely clumsy and very often i trip over nothing and end up dropping things, if me and a group of people have to do a task that requires motor skills i’ll usually be the one who either takes s long time or messes it up, it’s incredibly frustrating and embarrassing and i’ve been wondering what the hell is wrong will me up until this point.

Thank you for discussing this subject and for sharing the actual DSM-5 diagnostic criteria! I couldn't find them anywhere on the internet, which is ironic because I'm in the US, and the DSM is developed by the American Psychiatric Association (APA). (I'd have to actually buy the manual myself to find out.) Another ironic thing is that it's generally more difficult to find professionals who do dyspraxia/DCD evaluations here in the US. It's frustrating. There's less awareness of dyspraxia/DCD here, and most other sources that provide information on it are based in the UK and a few other English-speaking countries. I have ADHD (finally diagnosed early last month at 45), and since having neurodevelopmental condition(s) is a package deal type of thing (if you have one condition, it's likely that you also have other conditions), I'm sure I also have dyspraxia because I believe I meet the diagnostic criteria, though, of course, only professionals can determine that I have it. Aside from executive dysfunction, I've always had motor coordination issues, which have caused difficulties all my life, especially at school and work. I had to submit paperwork for work accommodations. (I believe they're called adjustments in the UK.) I only mentioned ADHD in the paperwork since it's one of the recognized conditions in the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Plus, ADHD and dyspraxia have motor coordination issues as overlapping symptoms. My case for requesting accommodations would be stronger if I also had a formal dyspraxia diagnosis. My day job requires mostly gross and fine manipulation skills, information processing speed, concentration/focus, and spatial awareness, which cause me to struggle.
I believe I also have dyscalculia and would love to be evaluated for that, but since my daily tasks (including work) don't require advanced math skills and I'm not in school, I can probably hold off on getting evaluated.

My dyspraxia has as much, if not more impact on my daily life. Using putty to help me try to improve my grip strength. I know every day I'm going to get spill something, break something, get injured, etc. and just have to try to face it with humor. I have very heavy furniture, so I don't break it. I have to wear shoes all the time, because I will stub or break a toe.

some days are worse for me in terms of coordination. my last job was in a tire factory, with a strict no-dƕug policy. i learned that if you fell or hurt yourself, especially if you had to receive medical care, they tended to drug test you. i was always running into things, hitting my shins, losing my balance while just standing, struggling to make my fingers cooperate, etc. my boss would constantly ask me if i was under the influence, and i was always exhuasted having to explain that, "i'm completely sober, just very tired and sore so it's harder to pilot my meat suit."
i didn't even know there was a word for my condition until today, but i've always struggled with being extremely uncoordinated. things have gotten less severe as i've gotten older, i think because i like to do hobbies that push me like playing piano, crocheting, doing cross-stitch, riding a bicycle, roller skating, etc. but ask me to walk in a straight line after i've been awake for 2 days while carrying a heavy tire? not gonna happen. my handwriting has improved a lot over the years but it's still pretty inconsistent, especially since i barely write anymore.

My mother has said she has noticed motor discoordination in me ever since she can remember. She says I can't throw a ball within the "typical" trajectory someone would. Among many other curious facts, I can never tell if I'm left-handed or ambidexterous: for example I write using my left hand and use the fork with it aswell, but I only use scissors or keys with the right hand. I also have trouble driving and figuring out how far the car is from the curb or any other object

Hey there! I don't have one myself, but adult tricycles are something that I have seen a lot more of in recent years (they don't look like little kid tricycles, I promise). I'd bet starting on that would be a good way to get the peddling motion down without having to worry about balancing. If you still wanted to learn to ride bicycles, then you would have some of the skills down already, so hopefully it would be manageable to learn. Hope this helps!

I don't have all the symptom associated with either, but enough of them. I struggle with choreography, remembering instructions, memory, sometimes I can't remember words that I want to say, directions, driving a car and I am a little clumsier so to speak. I have really good spatial awareness, and ability to judge distances and such when I'm not moving.
