I went to a Judo seminar, seeing some kihon forms from the throws i tried to create a kata. But according to the judo sensei find your posture, find your weapon. Like how his was his short height made his opponents bend over to grapple with him which destroys their balance. That is how styles are created, find your posture, find your weapon and find your own style.

Hi jesse, I started karate at 33 (after many years of body building, boxing and some krav maga). Main reason I took it up was for my son who 5 at the time needed an outlet for his ADHD. I earned my black belt at 40 and will hopefully be going for first Dan next year. The only local club we have near where we live was GKR karate, which allowed myself and my son (and later my daughter) to train together.
My son and I have always been interested in other styles and are constantly learning. I find at times when we try to learn other styles we find the dojos look down on us because we earned our belts through GKR karate. They say things like "oh, you go to a mcdojo", which is really hurtful to my kids. Even when we spar with them they admit we are on their level but it seems they don't want us in their club and take an instant dislike to us. My kids and I are very humble and respectful people, we don't advertise our style or belts to anyone in the dojos (in fact we don't even wear gi's when we visit, we go in as newbies). It saddens me that dojos operate this way.
Any advice you can give an old dog on this? I can get over this easy enough, but my son is starting feel really discouraged.

If that’s the attitude you’re greeted with, they don’t deserve your presence. The first thing you learn in Karate is respect. Respect is deserved, not demanded. Find open minded people to train with, and keep the ”beginner’s mind”. If that doesn’t help, humanity is doomed. :-)

Fantastic video! One of my favorite channels to watch! I've always felt that by learning different styles it enhances the styles you previously trained under and helps you utilize and evolve the tools you already have, discard techniques that are less useful, and add new techniques that appeal to you. You are a great role model for young martial artists because of your ability to adapt and learn other systems. There should always be an enthusiasm to learn more.

  • @ShihansDojo
    @ShihansDojo Před 6 lety +1

Thanks, another great video. I remember in the 70's and 80's there was much opposition about working with other martial arts, but it has been one of the things to train with other styles I feel helped me grow through the 90's to now. I instill these thoughts to my own students while they are training. I tell them to keep your base style as a foundation(root), build on that foundation and continue to make yourself the best you can be by learning something new everyday when possible. In this information age, there is no reason that any martial arts cannot grow as we continue towards making our selves and our spirit lead to the perfection of mind and body.

I admire you Jesse, I have been following you for years and I love your reflections, you put words to what I am not able to describe, you are a great philosopher, a great influence. I'm watching this video again and it makes a lot of sense to me, now more than before since I have practiced kyokushin for about 20 years and now after years of thinking about what to do with my karate that I felt stagnant, thinking about it, afraid of change , fear of disappointing, of not being loyal to my sensei by leaving the dojo where I learned and grew in karate... Finally five months ago I decided to open my mind and change my style, now I am learning shotokan and this has given me a great a blow of humility, to lower the ego, to have that beginner's mind again, where at first it is frustrating but with the hope of starting again, as you said, no style is better than another, karate is that great cake of carrot where one has only tried one piece and thinks theirs is better but has not tried the rest, hahahaha. Really, this change that I decided to make has been thanks to you, your reflections that I like so much, your blog and your videos... they have helped me do what I really want, now I feel free, with a karategi without emblems no longer I want to pay style federations... I don't need titles on a wall, I just want to continue learning and over the years I will surely do uechi ryu. You have taught me that if I didn't make my own way, the one I was really letting down was me. Thank you Jesse Sensei.

Here where I live, there aren't many styles (there are no shito-ryu, goju-ryu and wado-ryu dojos for example). So, even though I am a studente at a Shotokan Ryu Dojo, in addition to trying to get something from the few other styles in my town, I spend lots of time trying to learn from videos like yours ... Thank you for your work! It helps many people like me to keep going and opening their minds!

It's important to know what other people are training in as well so that if its a popular technique you are aware of it and won't be as surprised if its used on you in a self defense situation.

Thanks a lot. There are oldest histories about old masters that came to new dojos to start to learn more and continues improve themself. After that they start to teaching others too. Thanks to don't stop in yourself. One Aikido master told me, practice is like making a glass to collect precious water and when we bend every day to start practice, it is like a full glass of precious water that you leave to the roots and now glass is free to receive new one. I took Wing Chun for years then TKD and Muay Thai...I decided to train my daughter in Muay Thai and TKD. She wanted to get really good but only had me to compare herself to. So I enrolled both of us in a school together....even though I've been training for 10+years, we are both the same rank since we joined together. It has been super helpful for me to help me look at myself differently and unlearn some bad habits. So I can sympathize, even Yoda said you must unlearn what you have learned. My sifu taught me the original way to do the " middle" block, it is actually two blocks in the same movement. This was back in the early 1980's, and I am still amazed. You will learn not only styles but how they are all related.

That's why Bruce Lee was reluctant to give Jeet kune do a name. Because it really is all the same thing in the end. It's all a study of body movement. Body mechanics. Some martial arts are suited better for certain body types. There is no superior style, there is only what's right for the individual. There is only the right technique and the wrong technique. Everything else is relative.

I have been practicing four different styles of karate, which to some people seems weird because they see this as not choosing a path. I leave the door to each style open, though, so that I can train at different dojos anytime I have a chance and possibly learn something new.
Currently practice Tang soo do which is considered to be a Korean style of karate but to me is also a fascinating crossroad between Japanese and Korean martial arts.
Karate is a lifetime journey without borders to me.

I like the way you think..
the most importance from my perspective is knowing what we do.. everything is choices, I can not say I limiting my style or not limiting my style.. my style is never perfect.. so I can not say my style is better than another .. I just love it and die for it.. because I know what I'm aiming for, and the goal I want to reach.. that's the reason I'm learning my style deeper and deeper.. and keep saying to my self, and another.. I'm still learning and learning.. and still not enough..
so another style, is just knowledge for me.. and I dont think them deeply..
because whenever I feel courious about something(another style of martial art), I always come back to my base style..
so I call my style.. My Shorin style-ryu Karate.. :P :P lol
cause shorin-ryu I think it is the best and suited for me, after exploring another style..

Always putting yourself outside of your comfort zone and exploring possibilities is inspiring Jesse. In just a few hours I am excited to compete at the Northern California National Qualifier for the first time in kobudo, and I also get to be a judge for the first time at the same tournament. Big day with lots of new and exciting experiences! Have you ever judged or been a referee? I think I'm more nervous to be a good judge than actually competeing. Osu!
