    This is the answer to a question I’ve been asked a number of times and that is - how to fill in the 7 backend keyword boxes on the KDP publishing platform when uploading a no content or low content book. It can be tricky to decide what to put in these boxes, whether phrases or single words. In this video I explain how I fill in the 7 keyword boxes which works well in the sales of my books.

    Thank you for the informative video. Straight forward, cutting out the guesswork! Much appreciated! I do have one question, please forgive me if you have already covered this previously. The single keyword are they separated with commas or do you add them w/o commas?

    • @paulmarles

      No commas, just a space between the keywords. 👍

    Thanks Paul for the reminder. I rewatched this video because in 2020 I did an experiment and changed ALL 270 books of mine to have different but relevant to the topic, longtail keywords into my 7 keyword boxes. This seemed to be the BUZZ thing to do by many so called gurus. The result, my sales were terrible and books I would sell each month stopped selling altogether. Hence, I've now changed back to single relevant keywords in the boxes instead. Surprise, surprise, my books have started selling again. Did my sales fall due to COVID that a lot of people were saying was happening, who knows but I'm sticking with my original plans and going single keywords moving forward.

    @yugenakj Před 2 lety +1

    Thank you very much, Paul. The process is very straightforward for non-fiction books or manuals, where you choose keywords for title and subtitle. For fiction books it seems more vague.The title doesn't illuminate the content (think Salinger's Catcher In The Rye) unless you're being didactic (and probably ridiculous). And using a subtitle to "explain" the title risks trivializing. About backend keywords you risk falling into the generality of niche labels (e.g. 'humorous novel' or 'slapstick comedy'), unless you use something related to the characters or situations in the plot (e.g. 'bumbling inspector' or 'nymphomaniac wife'). But when you search for fiction on Amazon you don't normally use those details, you use macrocategories. So if you're not an author with thousands of reviews, ranking up only with keywords for the fiction genre I think is very complicated. Don't you think?

    • @paulmarles
      @paulmarles  Před 2 lety +1

      Agree 100%. This video was designed for publishers of low content books. With fiction building an audience is crucial to get those sales and reviews and, in turn, climb the rankings.

    Thanks, Paul for these videos. I see how, if you have researched the title and subtitle, this method of using single keywords and related terms in the seven keyword boxes would be best. Unfortunately, in my case, I published the book without any prior marketing research and so my title and subtitle aren't optimised. Others recommend using long-tail keyword phrases in each of the seven boxes and, in my case, I think that would be best. Either that or I might need to republish since the book's going nowhere.

    Very informative as always, I know that amazon makes combination of the keywords, but I think It's not logical to just add a single word out of the targeted main keywords, let me tell you why, amazon in any way would make those combinations whether from a single word or even from a phrase word, so why to waste those bullets on single words while I could use similar relevant keywords which people already searches for and leads them to the same targeted book I know they would need cause you know people don't think nor search in the same way! in the example you mentioned we could use" thank you teacher gifts
    , student teacher gifts
    ,...etc" that way we have two benefits, we have the word gift as well as the complete
    phrase that - according to a keyword inspector - have good search volume! I might be totally wrong, I love to hear your opinion, what do you think, thanks in advance! :)

    This is absolutely fantastic. Unfortunately I saw this after publishing my first two books. Is there a way to go back and redo the titles and subtitles to add additional keywords? Thank you for your video.

      No, you can’t change the title or subtitle. You would have to remove it and then re-upload it.

    One of the best I have seen on the 7 boxes ! - Captain would you say that it is unecessary to add ANY word that is in the title and subtitle withing the 7 slots - even if it is a long tail keyword phrase that includes a word in the title?

    • @jimraj68
      @jimraj68 Před 4 lety +1

      Also Captain you have repeated the word appreciation in title and subtitle - is this necessary or have you done so to male literal sense witht he sentance in the sub title?

      You’re correct that no need to repeat the words you have in the title and subtitle in the 7 keyword boxes and yes, it was just to make sense.

    Hi Paul--I really appreciate the well-presented material. Question on BSR for non-US marketplaces. Are there calculators (thinking of .fr and .es) for other marketplaces to figure out how much is approx selling per month? thanks.

    • @paulmarles
      @paulmarles  Před 2 lety +1

      The free calulator only does US. Publisher Rocket gives data for other market but only includes US, UK and Germany.

    Hello!! 🎉 Many thanks for your video! Very clear!
    One question, can we use this strategy to "copy" the keywords of bestselling books in our niche and just use their same keywords to rank higher?
    Thanks a lot!!

    • @paulmarles
      @paulmarles  Před rokem

      You can. As long as you don't use words that are trademarked.

    Excellent ! But can we use two words in the 7 keyword box.
    Example - ‘Gift Ideas’ in a box
    OR
    Separately ‘Gift’ and ‘Ideas’ in different boxes

    • @paulmarles
      @paulmarles  Před 3 lety +2

      Yes use as many as will fit in the box.

      @@paulmarles but if I use ‘gift’ and ‘ideas’ in one box out of 7, will that not be spamming keywords
