This is the answer to a question I’ve been asked a number of times and that is - how to fill in the 7 backend keyword boxes on the KDP publishing platform when uploading a no content or low content book. It can be tricky to decide what to put in these boxes, whether phrases or single words. In this video I explain how I fill in the 7 keyword boxes which works well in the sales of my books.

About this video - This video shows you how to fill in the backend 7 keyword boxes on the KDP publishing platform for no content and low content books.
Thank you for the informative video. Straight forward, cutting out the guesswork! Much appreciated! I do have one question, please forgive me if you have already covered this previously. The single keyword are they separated with commas or do you add them w/o commas?
No commas, just a space between the keywords. 👍
No commas, just a space between the keywords. 👍
@@paulmarles Thank you
Can we put multiple keyword in one box? for example- Box 1 - [teacher headmaster principal school gift]
like this?
Yes, you can 👍 That’s exactly how I do it.
Wow, I never realized how wrong I was doing it the way I was doing it. I practically had all the same keywords in all 7 boxes. Why I never watched this video before I will never know but once again you have done a fantastic job and definitely saved me from a lot of stress and heartache! THANK YOU!

You're welcome. Glad you found it useful.
That's a brilliantly effective method ... Thanks Paul ;)
You’re welcome.
Did you try it and u see results?
Thanks Paul for the reminder. I rewatched this video because in 2020 I did an experiment and changed ALL 270 books of mine to have different but relevant to the topic, longtail keywords into my 7 keyword boxes. This seemed to be the BUZZ thing to do by many so called gurus. The result, my sales were terrible and books I would sell each month stopped selling altogether. Hence, I've now changed back to single relevant keywords in the boxes instead. Surprise, surprise, my books have started selling again. Did my sales fall due to COVID that a lot of people were saying was happening, who knows but I'm sticking with my original plans and going single keywords moving forward.
That's good. It's all a learning process and about experimenting.
Really? I always try to fill the whole box because so many CZcamsrs said to do that. You think should I change it to single keywords again😭
@@Selinnaguz yes, fill the 7 boxes with as many single keywords as will fit. I stopped doing longtail keywords because my sales dropped significantly.
@@NerineMartin or an example of longtail keyword. Sorry if I'm bothering
@@Selinnaguz entering just this longtail keyword in one box for eg. 'unicorn coloring book for kids ages 4-13' as opposed to filling the 7 boxes with a combination of these words plus others to fill the boxes
Very helpful ... Thanks Paul
You’re welcome.
What a trick just amazing! yeahhh I love it...... Thank you man.
You’re welcome 👍
@@paulmarles I need your help. :)
Excellent stuff Paul reverse engineered beautifully
Thank you 🙏
Thanks Paul!
Thanks man for this I really appreciate
You’re welcome.
Thank you very much, Paul. The process is very straightforward for non-fiction books or manuals, where you choose keywords for title and subtitle. For fiction books it seems more vague. The title doesn't illuminate the content (think Salinger's Catcher In The Rye) unless you're being didactic (and probably ridiculous). And using a subtitle to "explain" the title risks trivializing. About backend keywords you risk falling into the generality of niche labels (e.g. 'humorous novel' or 'slapstick comedy'), unless you use something related to the characters or situations in the plot (e.g. 'bumbling inspector' or 'nymphomaniac wife'). But when you search for fiction on Amazon you don't normally use those details, you use macrocategories. So if you're not an author with thousands of reviews, ranking up only with keywords for the fiction genre I think is very complicated. Don't you think?
Agree 100%. This video was designed for publishers of low content books. With fiction building an audience is crucial to get those sales and reviews and, in turn, climb the rankings.
Excellent video! Thanks a lot!
You're welcome.
thank you Paul. that's great

thnx Paul 👍
Clear Course ✅
Thank you. 👍👍
Another smasher!! I was feeling wrong about stuffing the 7 KW boxes with LTK phrases as taught by other KDPers and you have just confirmed my intuition is worth following!!!🙏😸
Thank you 🙏

This is the type of knowledge I'm trying to learn to wisely list my books. Really enjoy learning from you Paul, keep the lessons rolling!
Thank you. Glad you've found them useful.
Maaan, useful!! Maaan!
Love u bro
Thanks, Paul for these videos. I see how, if you have researched the title and subtitle, this method of using single keywords and related terms in the seven keyword boxes would be best. Unfortunately, in my case, I published the book without any prior marketing research and so my title and subtitle aren't optimised. Others recommend using long-tail keyword phrases in each of the seven boxes and, in my case, I think that would be best. Either that or I might need to republish since the book's going nowhere.
Then experiment and see what works for you.
@@paulmarles Right. That's a great trick for finding the keywords others are using. I'm going to borrow their categories too.

great video! Do you have any exeamples of phrases in this exeample above to put in the 7 keywords, so not singel words ?
wow i am so impressed.normaly i put whole phrases in 7 slots. i have to try your technic. just one question.you fill up all these 7 slots till the end so they re fully packed and try to find so many relatives keywords as you can? or just you use few of them?hank you very much for that video
I don’t aim to fill them unless I have lots of relevant keywords.
If I have short Title and Subtitle from where I can get ideas for thise core keywords? From Description maybe?
Thank you .. your language is so clear and you cover a lot of things .. I just have 2 questions..
1. Is the keywords must be started in a capital latter or small or there is no difference?
2. If my nich for example about sister and on my design there are hearts and I but hearts one of my keywords is this ok or this is unrelated word because its not related to my nich .. and if I but the color of my notebook cover as keywords is that ok ? ..
Thank you 😊
1. The keyword in the cover doesn’t have to be capitalised but it should be in the title.
2. Don’t understand this question.
Thanks Paul. So glad I found your channel. I published my first recipe journal by watching your video.
Watching this, I'm not sure I did well in the keyword section. So I'm thinking of unpublishing and correcting it.
Quick question how do we do keyword search like you demonstrated in your video.
Also, is there a special way to write descriptions.
These two videos explain how I do keyword research and how I use the keywords: czcams.com/video/KV-rUyBVYlE/video.html and czcams.com/video/yE2k1jsELdw/video.html
@@paulmarles thanks a lot. Will check them out
Question: Does Amazon use the series name as it uses the title and subtitle in terms of indexing?
I don’t think it’s too important.
Very informative as always, I know that amazon makes combination of the keywords, but I think It's not logical to just add a single word out of the targeted main keywords, let me tell you why, amazon in any way would make those combinations whether from a single word or even from a phrase word, so why to waste those bullets on single words while I could use similar relevant keywords which people already searches for and leads them to the same targeted book I know they would need cause you know people don't think nor search in the same way! in the example you mentioned we could use" thank you teacher gifts
, student teacher gifts
,...etc" that way we have two benefits, we have the word gift as well as the complete
phrase that - according to a keyword inspector - have good search volume! I might be totally wrong, I love to hear your opinion, what do you think, thanks in advance! :)
This is absolutely fantastic. Unfortunately I saw this after publishing my first two books. Is there a way to go back and redo the titles and subtitles to add additional keywords? Thank you for your video.
No, you can’t change the title or subtitle. You would have to remove it and then re-upload it.
@@paulmarles Great. Thank you :-)
is this the current way? have there been any updates about the algorithm? :)
One of the best I have seen on the 7 boxes ! - Captain would you say that it is unecessary to add ANY word that is in the title and subtitle withing the 7 slots - even if it is a long tail keyword phrase that includes a word in the title?
Also Captain you have repeated the word appreciation in title and subtitle - is this necessary or have you done so to male literal sense witht he sentance in the sub title?
You’re correct that no need to repeat the words you have in the title and subtitle in the 7 keyword boxes and yes, it was just to make sense.
Hi Paul--I really appreciate the well-presented material. Question on BSR for non-US marketplaces. Are there calculators (thinking of .fr and .es) for other marketplaces to figure out how much is approx selling per month? thanks.
The free calulator only does US. Publisher Rocket gives data for other market but only includes US, UK and Germany.
Hello!! 🎉 Many thanks for your video! Very clear!
One question, can we use this strategy to "copy" the keywords of bestselling books in our niche and just use their same keywords to rank higher?
Thanks a lot!!
You can. As long as you don't use words that are trademarked.
Excellent ! But can we use two words in the 7 keyword box.
Example - ‘Gift Ideas’ in a box
OR
Separately ‘Gift’ and ‘Ideas’ in different boxes
Yes use as many as will fit in the box.
@@paulmarles but if I use ‘gift’ and ‘ideas’ in one box out of 7, will that not be spamming keywords
No
@@paulmarles Thankyou for your help
