    Hi Tristan! I live just outside of the park and wanted to let you and your subscribers know that there is another way to access the river. Every year during the Stone Fly hatch we get in many fisher enthusiast. If you enter through the Gunnison Gorge Wilderness Access Area there is a trail called Chucker Trail, it's definitely a four wheel drive road, but at the end there is a camping/picnic area. From the parking area there's a trail that trail that takes you down to the river. The trail is narrow and has many switch back, but very easy to walk and has beautiful scenery. At the bottom it opens up to a nice grassy area (large than most areas at the bottom) , a great place to relax, picnic, fish, and more. I've even seen people with pack mules carting kayaks down the trail. President Carter used to come out here every year to fish the river at this location. The next time you visit the Black Canyon, you might want to check this out.

    We were there a few years ago, it is amazing. We drove around the whole thing and stopped at every overlook even though we didn’t plan to. We had hotel reservations in Durango that night so drove down the “million dollar highway” at night. It was dark all the way from Ouray to Durango. There were mule deer EVERYWHERE. I think it was the most stressful drive we’ve ever had. But then we also stopped and saw more stars than I think I’ve ever seen in my life. It was a memorable trip for sure.

    • @SUVRVing
      @SUVRVing  Před 2 lety +4

      Agreed, driving at night in the mountains is always nerve-wracking because of those dang deer. Glad you (and your car) made it out alive!

    Hi Tristan, Greg here. Another good episode. High shiver factor. The Black Canyon is one of the most intimidating places I have ever visited. Had some friends that did a couple of climbing routes there and was always in awe. Steep, cold, dark and immense. Your description of the chaos at the bottom being like a machine with all the moving parts was a good one. Be careful out there Hans Solo. Thanks for the vicarious adventures. Looks like the last episode's via ferrata is now on our to do list.

      @SUVRVing  Před 2 lety +1

      Thanks Greg! Back in my climbing heyday, I always wanted to go climbing in the Black but never got around to it. I even had the guidebook and would spend hours poring over the different routes. Still an awesome place even without the climbing, though!

    I road a donkey down the grand canyons with my mom.
    My grandma took the helicopter.
    It was fun.
    I been their a few times and seen hover dam too.
    Plus been to Arizona many times and Los Angeles.
    I've been all over USA and Candia too.
    I used to love traveling to see different places.
    And I really don't do much anymore.
    But I do go to my old home stead town once in a while and I really enjoy it.

    Love the Black Canyon. Gunnison was my home for the 5 years before I moved to Yellowstone and I spent a lot of time there camping and hiking and of course fishing. I usually hiked into the Canyon from the western end as there is a nice BLM campground at the trailhead to make a basecamp from. Some of the largest Salmonfly hatches I've ever seen occurred in this stretch of the river.

    I visited this canyon back in the 80's, before it was a NP and was just a Naational Monument. I recall the saying then was: "There are canyons that are deeper and canyons that are steeper, but no canyon is AS deep or AS steep as the Black Canyon." Was so happy when its status changed to a NP, well deserved. Great video!

Not because of the sheer edges and heights. We visited the canyon in 1986, two years before we were married. When you held the camera over the fence it reminded me of when I was about 5 years old my parents took us to the Grand Canyon. We stopped at an overlook area and we were at the edge by the fence and my dad picked me up and held me over the fence and dangled me in the air and all I remember was thinking that he was going to drop me and I’d end up at the bottom of the Grand Canyon dead. My mother told him to put me down and don’t do that again.

    The rock art you show us is always amazing and always among my favorite segments of your journeys. It's interesting that the super early work seen in this video has none of the ubiquitous concentric circles, surreal human figures, or complex narratives found in so many other petro- or pictographs.

    Very nice, thank you. I lived worked and camped within sight of the Black Canyon in another millennia when I was about the age you are now, but it would have never occurred to me to hike down into it. I sure enjoyed your video.

    My first trip to Black Canyon of the Gunnison was in 1970 when it was just a National Monument as I recall. Have been there a handful of times since but never to the North rim. It remains as beautiful and untouched as when I first was there. Thanks for renewing some great memories.

    Beautiful canyon, love the drone footage of you driving along. I'm too old to want to fly overseas now but your videos show a beautiful side to the US, I'd never been interested in visiting all the big cities teeming with people. I love wide open spaces and have traveled extensively solo here in Australia.

      I definitely think there are similarities between the open spaces of the American West and the Australian Outback. I'd love to visit there at some point!

    In the 70's when I was at Western State I lead some members of our Climbing Club down the slot to check out the Painted Wall from the bottom. There was so much falling rock that we had to biv right as we got to the river. Headed back up the next morning. Awesome place to be...
