    So here is what i've learned as an avid pocket 4k user. As entry level, cinematic story telling & poetic commercials. Use the pocket4k/6k. For the rest, use any Hybrid camera with a good autofocus. When Ready and funds are available, You jump from lower end camera's directly to higher end cameras. Red/Sony venice/Arri cameras. No need to spend on other mid ranged camera's and lose money in the long run just to catchup with technology.

    Thanks for sharing! Very interesting. One potential upgrade path is the Ronin 4D, you can change the mount to anything. I have a BMPCC 4K, I plan to get the DJI Focus Pro soon

    Was offered the price of a new S5ii (at launch) for my BMPCC4K rig, 18-35 sigma, 500gb t5 SSD, cage, viltrox adapter and rail block system. I had both the S5ii and BMPCC4k for about 1 week. Never compared the two but I haven't looked back. The S5ii is a beast regardless of price. Fits my needs perfectly. The future of Lumix does seem relatively uncertain with the sad track record of Panansonic. Best case would be for Panasonic to sell the LUMIX brand to keep it going as I think they have a really great affordable product and should look at getting back into the pro line of cameras, like a successor to the EVA a new BS1H with built in ND.
    Panansonic are actually a really great company, quality products with great features. They heard the complaints about the AF and not only addressed it but recently released a new free update that improves it even further. I'm growing to really value a camera that's compact and doesn't require rigging. It seems like compact mirrorless cameras are the new wave of filmmaking cameras for small budgets that can be scaled up to big budget productions (when rigged out) like we've seen with the FX3. It's such a great time to own a mirrorless camera.
    I do wish there were more Lumix cameras like how Sony has there FX line which scales from the cropped FX30 to FX6 then FS line. The GH series should've been the cropped sensor line to pair with the S5ii S1H cameras but sadly uses MFT and not L mount. At least with Sonys cropped FX30 it uses E - Mount so you could theoretically grow into that system of lenses.
    L mount hopefully get's more widely adopted. I know DJI, Blackmagic and obviously Lumix offer bodys with the L mount but i'd love to see it in more cameras. Doing this will only increase the value proposition of investing in L mount. L mount has all the benefits of the E mount in terms of flange distance and adaptability with other full frame lens mounts like EF and vintage glass. My dream is for Lumix to make a mirrorless body similar size to an FX3 with internal ND and an OLPF (S1H has OLPF) and some global shutter like Sonys A9 iii with the low light of an FX3. That would make for a great documentary style body.

      I agree with everything you said, but I just don't wanna wait till Lumix ups the game, you know. I still can't believe that HDMI latency is still so bad a few camera generations later on Lumix. LUT support is horrible, it screws up the colors and exposure, it looks bad, I only use built in rec709 assist because of that. So 2 most advertised features, HDMI raw and LUT support, are practically unusable.
      That's why I'm selling all and gonna try my luck with something else. Sony is very tempting with its ecosystem

    You may already be doing this but using the Emotive Color power grades have been game changing for me in terms of getting my hybrid camera (Fuji XT4) to look more filmic. It's a night and day difference in terms of highlight and shadow rolloff. I did a lot of comparisons between P4k and the XT4 both using the Emotive Color to Alexa setup and they look nearly identical in terms of color science, however I preferred the look of the Fuji's APS-C Sensor. When you use the power grade you can also push your colors creatively in a way that feels much closer to BRAW despite being 10-bit. I think they have a S5II version so I'd definitely check it out if you haven't already. Also I love the Sirui lenses but they can get really milky if light hits them the wrong way which is unfortunate.

      @BorisTheArtist  Před 12 dny +1

      Thanks! I'll check those out, but I kinda have this specific vision of how I want something to look, so I really enjoy grading myself, a matter of personal taste I guess. It's not that I don't like Lumix image, it's just Lumix is very crippled in very important for me aspects, like rolling shutter, HDMI latency, terrible noisy preamps in 3.5mm mic input and L mount not having that variety of lenses I suppose. That's why I'm looking towards FX3 or at least A7IV lately.

    Would love to see a follow up video where you show the grading process for both cameras and problems you encountered. I'm curious what exactly is breaking there. I'm right in the middle of picking my next camera and Lumix S5II was top for me, especially after seeing so many videos praising it's price to quality ratio. Is it really that bad to consider Sony A7IV over it as you do?

    • @BorisTheArtist
      @BorisTheArtist  Před 12 dny +1

      Hey, thanks! For the price that I got s5ii, it's definitely the best for the money, but thinking long term, it must be Sony probably. If you plan on cooperating with someone, or in general, upgrading, renting higher end gear, you get the whole range of E mount cameras and lenses, a lot of productions and rental houses use Sony, etc... But it doesn't mean you're gonna stick with one camera for life. In terms of color, I'd say every 10 bit now can be graded no issues mostly. Of course it's not raw, but for most needs it's gonna be enough. Hardware is what bothers me with Lumix, like HDMI latency, noisy 3.5mm jack input, way less lenses for L mount... But it depends on what you need I guess. I'm gonna use Lumix for a bit more, until I decide whether to get A7IV, or go full in with FX3

    As a fellow Pocket 4K user, I've wanted to get the S5ii or the X because I wanted the connivence factor off a small footprint, but like you, I just love the Pocket 4K's image so much. My rational mind keeps saying stick with that and buy better lights with the money you'd use for the Lumix.

      Yeah, I'm a bit torn to be honest. Pocket image out of the box looks amazing. But I want to snap out of it a bit. I'm actually planning to make something more practical, not just tests, with Lumix, to see if I can get the image I'm happy with. Also I'm considering selling both and getting FX3 potentially, but I wanna give Lumix a chance before doing so. If only Lumix fixed HDMI latency...

      @BorisTheArtist  Před 17 dny +1

      Well, that's what I initially thought and didn't use BM for a few months, but one time I decided to try it out again, man, the image is so good straight out of the camera and it's just a 4K. I worked with 6k pro and Ursa G2 a lot back when I was working for a TV production and those are even better. Anyway, that's why I like having both, cause it always depends on the needs, but in my case on my mood haha

    • @LumixGang
      @LumixGang Před 17 dny

      @@BorisTheArtistI understand I was the opposite. I had the 4k a while back and I hated using it because of the inconvenience so I sold it and kept my GH5. Then I got the 6k pro after I sold my A7siii and I remembered how much I hated using it outside of jobs so I sold it and got a Lumix S5 ii now I'm happy the image quality isn't as good to be honest but it's a more convenient camera. I also have an S5 OG with the Blackmagic Video Assist for when I want to shoot B Raw.

    Documentary filmmaking here - I'm torned between making this decision myself. 6k full frame is in my cart of months now. Just cannot find linear focus setting solution on blackmagic camera (except lumix s pro 24-70mm f2.8 and samyang 35 150). The only reason why I might end up with s5iix.
    Do you think linear focus is solved in sony ecosystem?

    • @BorisTheArtist
      @BorisTheArtist  Před 10 dny

      There's a linear focus mode in Sony, but not with every lens. So gotta research the lens for that before you buy.
      I was thinking about BM FF myself, but it's just too crippled.
      Also my friend who owns 2 of those, contacted BM regarding linear support and they said that they received demands to add this feature, but it's not their top priority now, so I wouldn't count that they'll add it, considering they're ditching L mount and going back to EF and PL.
      Regarding Lumix, it's too crippled as well, poor HDMI lag, noisy 3.5mm mic input, shitty LUT support, that doesn't show the LUT correctly... And again, no upgrade path for L-mount, while with Sony you can use E mount on something like A7IV, and in the future on Venice 2.
      BUT, I'm not recommending anything to you as I'm torn myself, just try to figure out what's the most important for you.

      @@BorisTheArtist I know, next level frustration. I think for now I will not invest in either of the systems. Probably will wait a year or two for more and see how 6k ff, pyxis and s1h mk2 (solving olpf issue of s5iix) evolve with the firmwares etc. Or move to sony ones i get to test them extensively. Or invest in some expensive cine zooms hahaha...
      In the meantime, I will direct my budget into lenses for my current bmpcc original doc rig.
      Thank you for sharing your insight.

      @@harshsingh6692 pocket OG is an amazing camera that's well built and can survive a nuke explosion. Bunch of good and cheap MFT lenses. To be honest, I regret selling it, might get one again, or micro og for 60fps. I bought s5II because I need to travel for some shoots and I just wanted a cheap, but good hybrid for social media and maybe as a back up camera for some weird angles, because we shoot the project on a rented Venice. FX3 was a bit too expensive in my taste, but now I'm considering it, because I see how you really get a clear upgrade path with Sony and E mount.
      P.S. honestly, never thought I'd like Sony, always thought it's over hyped, but there's a reason... Ecosystem and reliability is way better than some other features that are preached by hipster CZcamsrs who never spent a day on an actual film set

      @@BorisTheArtist shit dude... I'm realising it as well, after spending lot of evenings with people who work on set. "reliability" is the name of the game.
      A follow up question - what lenses you have experience with for bmpcc original.
      I have been testing basic panasonic and olympus's. I will be testing dzofilm mft as well. Also, panasonic leica 10-25 and 25-50 looks a great set. Sigma 18 35 and 50 100 f1.8 with speedbooster is also interesting option (not sure about linear focus).
      I want 2 lens set with atleast 24 to 105 coverage. Cannot go in the direction of primes for now.
      Any suggestions for "reliable" options will be great. Thank you

    I have both and a few other newer bmpccs. Needless to say I sold the s5ii, it was garbage. Image fell apart in most codecs. The only conditions we got good image was in natural daylighting. Low light and artificial, it’s trash. The 420 10 is not good at all. All intra 422 4k is where we found better quality. Still has awful skin tones and weird magenta tones. I’ve never seen a good image come out of it. It’s a shame, the s5 mark 1 was a winner in terms of image
    Photo image quality is actually amazing.

      100% agree. So disappointed by the S5II video quality. I used a lot of Panasonic cameras but the S5II has something really bad about video detail rendering, especially in low light.

    • @BorisTheArtist
      @BorisTheArtist  Před 17 dny +2

      Yeah, it's really hard to grade and not to break Panasonic's 10 bit. I'll be honest, the more I compare it to blackmagic, the more I want to sell it. But you know, it's just a good hybrid for non paid jobs, like traveling and CZcams, but I'm still considering ditching it in favor of Sony a7iv. That's what most likely will happen, but we'll see.

      @aiseurnae5976 really? I've heard people saying S5 has better quality, but I honestly didn't see much difference between them when I owned s5. I mainly intended to use s5ii for autofocus for social media stuff, but now I'm leaning towards Sony more, idk.
