Fun fact: if I remember correctly, the director told that he NEVER read the manga or watched the anime, he directed the movie based solely on the synopsis.
Yep, JUST THE FUCKING SYNOPSIS!!! And even this, he missed the whole point...!
oh damn-
Was the director also the writer? If not, that shouldn't matter as much. A director, to my knowledge, just gives actors instructions on how to say lines and emote.
@@jadaw644 I should've been clearer: the director AND the screenwriter made this solely based on a synopsis.
And the director has to have a connection with the source material (a.k.a. being a fan of it) to adapt something properly.
That's how Lord of The Rings, 2021 Dune and Alita are masterpieces and Dragonball Evolution and Netflix's Death Note are terrible.
This puts him on the same level as Seltzer and Friedberg.
@@Heroshii15 I had to google their names to see who the hell they are; and, holy wow, I did not see that coming 😳😅...!
Light has the energy of the "Don't f*ck with me, I've got the power of god and anime on my side." kid from Vine
I have seen so many reviews and read so many comments on this awful movie, but yours is by far the most accurate vibe you get from Light.
I remember finding out there was a Bungo Stray Dogs live action and found out that it's not just an adaptation. It's an entirely different alternate universe. And I remember thinking to myself "Wow. This is really cool. More live actions should do this."
This movie wasn't what I had in mind when I said that
I really wish they made that AU animated, it would have been so much better. But the live action Bungou Stray Dogs movie is from a light novel called 'Bungou Stray Dogs:Beast', it's where Dazai is the mafia boss, Oda is in the ADA, and Atsushi and Akutagawa switch roles and somewhat personalities. Atsushi is in the mafia with this cold demeanor, and Akutagawa is in the ADA.
Where can I watch that movie
@@elfi643 No idea. I've never watched the live action. I just read the light novel and read some of the Beast manga when it came out after the fact.
wait where can i watch it
@@elfi643 yolo! Try searching up the BTS of that movie, cause one of the channels has the movie linked to their carrd
“Most rage-inducting film to even the most casual Death Note fan” is the biggest understatement of all time, but yeah
Can we address the fact that you can apparently kill death gods by writing their names in the book? Its not manga-compliant but if we’re making Ryun into more of an antagonist that would be a really interesting idea to explore, outwitting and ending this malevolent supernatural being.
But that would be interesting, can't have that
Plus the line from Ryun in regards to that is kinda badass “(Willem Defoe manic laugh) You can try. My name’s got four letters in it the most anyone has gotten was two.”
@@whovianjc4342 personally that’s the only line in the whole movie i felt was amazing
Wait does that mean that people named Ryan can’t be killed by the deathnote without Ryun jumping in to defend them?
@@beefpelican I noticed the typo and was going to edit it but your comment is good enough to stop me 😂
My friend and I watched this together and spent the whole time laughing and yelling at how bad it was.
Yk your right, is the type of of movie thats so bad it’s good, because it’s so easy to laugh at it
Ditto. It's a great movie to "boo"
Same. Honestly, in my experience it's actually a pretty fun watch if you go into it treating it like a parody instead of a serious attempt to mimic the original.
Granted, I say this as someone who was in her sophomore year of high school when the manga first came out in the states, and still has oddly fond memories of watching each new episode in 5 parts in 360p resolution on CZcams because there was no such thing as streaming back then.
Then again, my best friend and I _also_ lived through the Death Note fandom at its absolute _cringiest_ (and I'm not too proud to admit _I_ was one of those cringe fans back then), so we were largely numb to the more painful parts of the Netflix movie by the time it came out. XD
My friend and I watched the first half hour and we’re so disgusted that we stopped and watched the series for hours
I watched it when it first came out due to morbid curiosity. To see how much of an obvious trainwreck it will be.
As a result, I remember vividly receiving a headache out of anger and annoyance while watching the whole film. All the moments of myself pausing the movie because of poor attempts at jump scares (Death Note is not even horror, so it made zero sense to me) and ridiculous changes from the anime from its story, progression, and ESPECIALLY its characters and their motivations. I never felt this pissed at a Westernized take on one of my favorite anime series since Dragon Ball Evolution.
The original Japanese live action Death Note films were better than this. Hell, I would much rather watch the 2015 TV drama again over this, which was another poor retelling of the series IMO.
They really butchered Light’s character. Like, I’d rather he be pretentious than… this
A lucky moron?
I think the reason Netflix's Deathnote didn't offend me was because I watched an interview with the directors beforehand, where they explained they were going for an alternative/"what if" version of deathnote that was more of an American horror than clever crime thriller, so I was never expecting anything close to a faithful adaptation from the beginning. (Moral of the story: Keep your expectations low and you won't be disappointed lol)
That's literally how I live my life though. Knowledgeable and expecting to be underwhelmed. That way you get pleasant surprises and no bad ones.
No! Fuck that, it's exactly that kind of mind set that makes it to where this kind of live action garbage can thrive FUCK THAT I'm trying to get my dad into the stories anime offers but he won't because it's a "cartoon" and so when I see live actions it's like "sweet dad can get a taste for live action and will watch the original maybe." Then it's shit like ths
I have a similar philosophy when it comes to media. The only time it’s failed me is when I went to see the Last Airbender live action movie. I went in knowing it was going to be a shitshow, and I still had my expectations too high.
I can promise that if someone who didnt know anything about Death Note watched this, they would also think its awful. Everything about the movie is terrible, the acting, the writing, the dialogue, the plot. Its all garbage
They shouldn't of did anything with it, they should of just left it alone
My villian origin story is that my older brother showed me this movie before I got into anime and I thought it was good.
At least you changed your ways and saw the good version

I was mad bc Ryuk and L were my favorite characters and Ryuk was basically made an evil pineapple headed green lantern and L an idiot. They almost made Light likable instead of pretentious (while also being an idiot).
Can you imagine having a dyslexic moment trying to write?
The hilarious accidents that could ensue...
"dyslexic moment" 😭😭😭
how was L an idiot? also L is "special" ed irl for sure
i dont know if this is what you intended when you said green lantern but now i cant stop thinking about live action ryuk being the green lantern ghost from tgcf
@@elunar8461I was thinking Spider Man since William D also played Ryuk but I'd definitely prefer the mental of Green Lantern Ghost. That would be a terrifying universe crossover I'd pay to see. Can you imagine the chaos?
"The human whose name is written in this note book shall die" that was the first rule of the death and by the end of Death note they messed that up
When I was newly getting into anime and I searched up death note in Netflix, this movie came up. I was like ‘sweet no need for illegal websites’. Then i realised it was a live action and I decided that it was probably gonna be really bad and I was right. So glad I didn’t watch and thank you for showing me what it was about
With movies like these, the illegal website is usually the better option
What's additionally painful about this is that there were Death Note live action movies that existed nearly a decade earlier that were LEAUGES above this nightmare. The actors were great if not hamming it up a bit, it stuck to the concept but only changed the ending up a bit, managed to get an L-centric spinoff movie and book, and had probably some of the closest visual casting choices I've seen in a live action adaptation (see: Kenichi Matsuyama as L). Hell, even the weird drama was more interesting and engaging than this and it came out only 2 years before.
And, like, Ryuk is literally a dude in a costume and it still looks better than the CGI they slapped on the actor's face in the Netflix's movie
I know right?
Even the MUSICAL was good, they really messed up with this one
L actor was great, but nobody can be even close to to anime Light
my mom watched this last year. I faintly heard Defoe's voice and, despite having never watched it before, instantly knew she was watching this movie. I come out, she's indeed a good portion through it. I sat down, hated it within 5 minutes. God it was so frustrating to watch knowing the actual lore and how these characters are supposed to act. Good news is she didn't care for it either so it won't ever be on our tv again
ask her to watch the original anime with you!
This is like Death Note written by someone who's cousin's friend's friend's boyfriend saw Death Note once.
More like someone who hate death note
Believe it or not, when it first came out, my friend (who doesn't do anime, not only that, she despises almost every genre of movies, she doesn't like action, fiction, sci-fy and only watches romance, comedy or horror if we're together bc is the only genre we agree on, which fair enough, each person like what they like) told me she thought it was a good movie and asked me why I didn't like it. I told her "Well, for starters I'm a sucker for mystery detective plots and the original anime is a mixture of action with mindblowing twists and just two very inteligent people constantly trying to outsmart the other. It's kind of nice seeing people using their brain and just being clever in general." and, I'm not even exagerating, she told me with a deadpan face "well im really glad the movie is not like that, I would've hated it, this is better" I... I understood I would never go to the movies with her
God damn...
God, Danny starting out with the most hardcore intro I’ve ever seen🤣🤣”How’s it going everybody, welcome to a mistake”
It’s been so long since I’ve watched this mess, but what was stopping Light from getting Watari to like, grab L and yeet himself off a highrise while holding onto him?
@@acertainanimereference5225 yeah but this movie says you can apparently mind control someone with just their first name.
It’s not the superior anime logic. It’s this movie’s “logic”.

“I’m gonna start standing!” I felt that. I almost stood too. I haven’t even watched the anime or read the manga yet and I’m outraged by the audacity. This does make me want to read/watch actual DeathNote sooner though.
Ik a website that will allow you to do it for free
"They're making out while murdering people!" is so funny out of context 🤣
Alice in Borderland did a really great live action show imo. There's like 2 characters who feel like anime characters, the rest are very grounded
I remember watching this when I was young and this monstrosity was so traumatic I had nightmares about it for the next six months
Hey Danny just to let you know there are two other live action death note movies that were made in Japan in 2006 and I'll say now it looks way better and the acting is nice.
The characters actually look closely to there anime/manga counter parts
I feel like I remember light controlling peoples actions before their death in the anime to an extent but yea this was ridiculous
It was Noami Misora who was the fiancé of an fbi agent that Kira killed. Light basically controlled her to kill herself but that was it.
The fact that Danny actually RULE 63’d Light is amazing.
You do have a good point; half the teachers I know would rack up a kill count 3 times bigger then this version of Light by the end of 1st Period.
L stomping in and jumping on the chair was so hilarious
I'm 100 percent sure that this movie would've been infinitely better received if it wasn't marketed as a Death Note adaptation. It's not great by any means but I definitely wouldn't call it terrible either. And unlike most anime live action adaptations this one actually feels like it was made because someone had a story to tell, instead of simply trying to cash in on brand recognition. The acting, cinematography and editing are all pretty solid too, even if the script isn't.
I agree. A step would have been to definitely change the names and establish this is a completely different set of characters, rather than attempting to recycle old material.
Because this looks a lot like a poor interpretation of the original.
I don’t know if anyone mentioned it already, but there are 3 Japanese live action Death Notes that were decently good! Definitely worth looking up
YESSSS
you never disappoint to make me laugh 😌 hoping i dont wake anybody up
Why didn't I think about this when you hinted at a live action anime adaptation
This is like THE live action anime adaptation
But hey you did say human brains block out trauma
Fun fact, the live action death note was my very first exposure to death note and anime itself. My sister and I couldn't even get halfway through the movie.
Also, I had no idea it was a remake until years and years later in 2021 AFTER I finished watching the Death Note anime itself.
This is making me wanna rewatch the anime again.
The fact this movie exists baffles me to no end, and I wish I could permanently erase it from my mind. However, watching Danny tear it to pieces is a good consolation.
I'd love to see Danny watch Moriarty the patriot
His reactions would probably be hilarious 😂
as a huge death note fan this shit gave me a multipule brain anurism and brain rot
AND THANK YOU, i've said to my friends before that death note could actually lend itself super well to live action.
Ok I swear I remember this to be the only good live action anime! I'm like 95% sure that it had god damn William Dafoe in it how did they manage to ruin it!?
...I'm not sure how anyone could ever think this was good lol.
it was trash even before it was released, turned out to be worse than trash
The AU nobody asked for.
I remember that I was too scared to watch this movie alone, so I had to drag bunch of friends into it 😂 the trauma was real. I'm glad I didn't have to revisit this memory alone 🙏 thanks for fun reaction!
Okay but like why did they think they could fit a anime like death note in a moive
exactly...i was sitting here thinking the same.
1) the scene with Ryuk sucks because Light in the anime/manga was barely fazed when he saw him, since he already figured out it's not for this world
2) according to Light's investigation the death description has to be plausible or he'll just die of a heart attack
3) Light for the entirety of the show had no problem getting women. he was smart, good looking, athletic he used misa as a cover and because of her eyes. he was never awkward. if he got close to somebody it was because he had a plan. best example for this was when he took a girl on a date so he could force an FBI agent that worked for "L" to reveal his identity
4) anime Ryuk basically sat back and watched the show, he dropped the notebook because he was bored, also in th anime we are told there is only 2 ways a shinigami can die. 1 is to reach the end of his lifspan and 2 is to save someone from death. you can't write their names
They definitely had to buff the death note a lot to make up for the writers inability to write lightbulb as smart as og light, the biggest problem I think is that they just gave every character heightened emotions to increase the drama, the problem is light is supposed to be cunning and smart, lightbulb is emotional and impulsive, impulsivity is a characteristic used in stories as a flaw that is a foil to intelligence, A SMART CHARACTER SHOULDN’T HAVE THAT! Especially one on the level of light. This means the death note has to do all the heavy lifting to balance lights impulsivity, which shouldn’t have been there in the first place!
16:13 I mean, L did just break into the house unannounced and was getting worked up around a stranger, the dad, who is unsure as to why this person broke into his house and what he might do in such a state. Also, an emotional L is the best joke, because it’s like a hormonal, emotional, and easily manipulated Light, so far from the source that it in itself is a joke. I feel like they wanted to make a romantic comedy with some darkish themes and couldn’t get their show green lit, so they went for a fairly popular (which Netflix was familiar with) show with some good IP to use as a disguise for their own show.
It could have been worse…
Wait till he sees the assassination classroom live adaptation
oh they didnt :O :O nooooo they shouldnt :/
This movie is the Death Note equivalent of the Percy Jackson movie
Danny: this is the most rage-inducing film
The Peter Johnson movie: finally a worthy opponent.
"I'm something of a god myself." - Ryuk
As a hardcore Death Note fan who watched it at the time, I will be getting a therapist and telling them about this because I’m still traumatised. Pay for private therapy, Netflix. I need the hardcore treatment plan.
When I first watched this before watching Death Note, I was like "Huh, that wasn't that bad. I wonder what the hate is about." Then I watched the anime...
I could not make it through this movie. After the first kid died to decapitation I was rolling my eyes and existing so fast.
Ok but wasn’t light and misas relationship supposed to be really one sided
I’m so sorry you put yourself through this.
Just wait until he hears about the Live action Assassination classroom movie
The movie made me question all my life decisions.
i could so feel your stress & frustration through the screen......im sooooo glad i dont have netflix...that was the worst they could have possibly done to ruin deathnote :O they dumbed down light so very badly & turned misa into a cheerleader? they gave L a bad personality with a severe temper & took away his brains....they atleast tried to make ryuk as amazing as he was in the anime but it still doesnt make me want to ever ever see this version of deathnote. they should of really left it well alone & let it just be an anime. i love deathnote & i love how it went in the anime. thanks danny for your react on this :)
Thank you for making my day. :) I appreciate all of your hard work. ♥️
"Do not use the death note to pick up girls"- this should be common knowledge for a highly intelligent sociopath but this film says otherwise
In the next adaptation it should be added as a rule
I think what bothers me most about this is the whole point of Lights character is that he is a super smart and popular guy. The guy no one would ever suspect would be a mask killer. He is supposed to be cocky and confident. Yet they turned him into the awkward kid. I agree. They could have done this correctly. They just chose not to because they didn’t feel it would work for America. But it’s a popular anime for a reason.
Incredible! Can’t wait for this!
To add to what you where saying Danny about the book not controlling reality, in the show they even have a rule "The conditions of death will not be realized unless they are physically possible for that human or could be reasonably assumed to be carried out by that human."
I feel so bad that you had to witness that monstrosity.
They used him doing other people's homework to tell us that he's smart so they didn't have to actually make him do any smart things. 💀💀💀💀
I also heard that the actor for L was a huge fan of Death Note and was really excited to be casted as L, but was disappointed when he read the script. I don't know how true that is, but I'd be too if I was casted as my favorite character and then got some Walmart brand version of them.
Was seriously hoping the American version was gonna be an entirely different story about a different person finding a death note...in the USA. Having ryuk back could work, but man why do this? Lol
Look at the musical version PLEASE, its pretty faithful and fun as hell
I still think that this wouldn’t have been nearly as poorly received if they just changed the names of the characters and made it a whole new story using the concept of a death note
this is gonna be an absolute banger
You should to the Death movie trilogy that started in 2006 and ended in 2016, it has movie spin off about L. These movies are amongs the best live actions adaption of Manga ever

I’ve been meaning to ask you, having an award winning director background, what anime would you like to make in a live action? With hypothetical unlimited resources at your disposal, how would you go about it (casting, music, locations, etc)? I know it’s not a simple question to answer but I would love it if you made a video response.
I find it so interesting how Nat Wolff hasnt really been in any substantial roles since this movie, while his brother Alex has just taken off, recently appearing in Oppenheimer.
Margaret Qualley also took off too though (been in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood), so maybe I'm reading into it.

Part of what made Light so compelling as a character was that he was hyper smart and probably had a form of ASPD but still had such high charisma that even the audience wasn't sure if he was evil lol In this adaptation they stripped Light of basically everything that made him so interesting
The funniest part to me is that there's a stage musical version of Death Note that's actually awesome, so technically there's ALREADY a good live action Death Note! Like... the bar was on the floor lmao 🤣
