🌟 Welcome to a journey through the captivating world of Diana Vreeland's iconic apartment!
Diana Vreeland, the visionary force behind Harper's Bazaar and Vogue, left an indelible mark on the fashion world.
Diana Vreeland transcended the realm of fashion editors. She was a whirlwind of eccentricity, a captivating personality who left an indelible mark on the fashion world and beyond.
Born Diana Dalziel, her life unfolded like a fantastical narrative. She moved between the chic environs of Paris and New York, rubbing shoulders with Coco Chanel and Andy Warhol. Vreeland's distinct vision propelled her through the ranks of fashion magazines. At Harper's Bazaar and Vogue, she wasn't just presenting fashion; she was orchestrating cultural moments. Her pages pulsed with a vibrancy that extended far beyond clothing, incorporating art, travel, and a touch of the avant-garde.
Vreeland wasn't merely interested in showcasing trends; she was a champion of individuality. Her booming pronouncements, delivered in a trademark rapid-fire staccato, emphasized the power of personal style. "Why look like everyone else?" she'd declare, urging readers to cultivate their own unique flair. Vreeland even coined the term "youthquake" in the 1960s, recognizing the burgeoning cultural shift towards youthful rebellion.
Beyond fashion, Vreeland's legacy extends to the realm of museums. After her departure from Vogue, she became a special consultant at the Costume Institute of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. There, she curated a series of groundbreaking exhibitions that transformed the perception of fashion as a powerful social commentary.
Diana Vreeland was a force of nature, a woman who reveled in the extraordinary. Her flamboyant persona and unwavering belief in the transformative power of style continue to inspire artists, designers, and anyone who dares to embrace a life less ordinary.

I will never forget a knock at my door and opening it to find Diana Vreeland standing in front of me... Her deep voice saying "I am Diana Vreeland, from Vogue Magazine"... I would like to feature your work in Vogue.... and so it went and I had my work in two Vogue Editions. Yes, this woman was absolutely unforgettable! I am so happy to see this glimpse into her home.
Now that's a good story...
Well done for getting your work in vogue. What a thrill that must have been
Wow. What an honor. Any references to your work to show us. Congrats you have held that memory as a treasure.
Mrs. Vreeland wwas an icon and all the things Anna Wintour wishes she were but can never be.
I wish we all had her confidence.
She kind of reminds me of Iris Apfel ( my favorite)
Yes! And Ms. Apfel reminds me of Ms. Vreeland. They were both icons of tremendous personal style more than fashion, and entirely unique in vision. Thanks for your comment!
She sure liked the color red!
She was the greatest! Vogue was never the same after she was gone.
That Anna woman will never even think of the ideas Vreeland had in her little finger!!!! All Anna knows is marketing
The apartment reflected HER. It wouldn’t be for everyone, but she was an individual and wasn’t afraid to be who she was. I think she was magnificent. And good design always represents the personality of the owner.
I completely agree! It's so refreshing to see someone embrace their individuality and let it shine through in their living space. It's a true reflection of their personality and makes the apartment feel like a home.
it reflects her limited taste of style
@@MagnusVonBenz I have no idea what that means.
Ms. Vreeland is one of my favorite people.
A creative genius
Diana not only an Icon In fashion, lover of art with an incredible panache for style & taste!
Thank you so much for your kind words! Diana was truly a fashion icon and her love for art and style continues to inspire us all.
I was in that apartment many times, having dinner with Mrs. Vreeland. She was terrific. That first image of the apartment -- I'm not sure that is in her place, actually. It was not a large apartment, and the rooms pictured in that first photograph are neither her living room nor the dining room. I don't recognize it. And no, the place never smelled of cigarette smoke!
I read that Diana Vreeland was grossly underpaid for what she did for Vogue. By comparison, Anna Wintour is very well paid. Someone said she had nothing of real value. That is probably why Diana was so innovative in using such vibrant color and over-the-top decor.
The interiors were designed by Billy Baldwin, not DV. Although she was wonderful and fascinating, give credit to the interior designer.
Everyone in the interior design sector knows it was Billy Baldwin who executed Diana Vreeland's vision. She told him that she wanted it to look like a garden from Hell.
So glad you said that and gave Mr. Baldwin his due! Diana certainly would have!
All I can think of is how to clean the apartment 🤣
Are you a cleaning lady?
A fascinating woman..her eccentricity her travels her taste..everything and everybody she surrounded herself with..fabulous...a life well lived.
Very inspiring for minds of quality.
I remember the days in the 60s when that month's Vogue would arrive in our mailbox. My mother and I would sit side-by-side on the living room sofa, marveling at page upon page of Vreeland's bold creativity. Her fearless approach to design and collecting was such an inspiration to so many of us in those days. And we never worried about dust! The point was a sui generis personal style that reflected our life journey and surprised and delighted our visitors.
The epitome of Park Ave chic. Love her and her style!
I KNEW she was going to have a pattern on pattern room like Lee Radziwill! I envisioned it before watching the video, in the same color scheme and everything!
The wonderful woman was a great gift to many of us.
The colors are warm and cozy, I also like Vibin reds
That apartment gives ne headaches, but it was HER home and HER taste. I hate cluter, she embraced it. It's a matter of personality. As long as she enjoyed it, nothing else should matter.
It’s a wonderful place to visit, but I wouldn’t want to live there. It’s spectacular and inspiring and matches her aesthetic, and I know my aesthetic would be considered toned down by her standards, and that’s okay-to each their own. I enjoyed the video very much. Thanks you.
I totally agree!
I love Diana Vreeland. Such an interesting woman.
such class. i love her.
This was always multimedia inspiration! A rich life well lived!
Brava!
Divine. Thanks so much!!!🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂
Beautiful apartment!!!!!!! I loved it
The place looks like a decorator’s prank.
A decorators joke for someone with no taste.
“Dahling, I love you but give me Park Avenue.” Lisa Douglas
Rajah as Diana Vreeland is superb. A bench mark for modern theatre.
A different time, an era. It seems it went so quickly, too quickly, quickly. Where was yesterday? ‘It was as though it was only just yesterday’. Gone to the pages of history, from forever cemented.
The apartment was a labor of love. The photography wasn’t the best to compliment it…as the flash was used. I can well imagine it to’ve been very warm and inviting with 20th century incandescent lighting and real candle light when entertaining. Her apartment co-op is no larger than my own. I would’ve loved to have known her.
Good point!
Everything blended “HARMONIOUSLY”… yeah, right 😵💫
Thank you for sharing a beautiful and gorgeous home of a very very nice lady!!! ❤❤😊😊
You are so welcome!
A lot of people Jackie Kennedy’s sister matching drapes with wall paper and massive art collections . Must have been the style of that time . Lots of silks and fabric bold and bright .. as long as Diana loved it is most important
Her red wallpaper reminds me of Jackie O's NY apartment dining room.
She was the pivotal figure who translated (especially Parisian) High Fashion to the rich American buyers, from one side, and on the other showed it to the masses during the Golden Age of both HC and RTW. She defined our cultural History doing it, this is why she's a Historic figure herself. Comparing her to Anna Wintour, because of their job, it is like comparing Basquiat to an English Lady Fishmonger working after the disasters of Brexit.
Some of the rooms, especially the very busy red ones, reminded me of some of Lee Radziwill's interior décor. The floor-to-ceiling printed fabric on walls and then upholstering the furniture must have been something that appealed specifically to the elites of the 1960s. The profusion of prints, more-is-more, was of a particular _zeitgeist_ that no longer exists.
That more is more is more is a response to being able to comfortably travel the world. This was the birth of globalization, and people who could afford it liked to show that they'd been everywhere. That works really well with a super maximalist style.
My grandparents were diplomats and had a WASP-ier more subdued take on that style. They didn't go in for pattern as much as rich colors, but it was zillions of books in every room, and art and foreign objects for days.
I personally LOVE this kind of maximalism, but it's a tough look to pull off authentically because you have to be very cultured, very interesting, and really able to edit to get it to work.
@@Bunny-ch2ul Thanks for your thoughtful reply, esp. that the seeds of globalism are suggested by that décor. I agree wholeheartedly about recreating that _luxe_ and cultured ambience and understand wanting to live and be in it.
Fabulous
Yes!
a real nightmare with a big lack of respiration; A kind of permanent apnea
Zow-E. That apartment is something else. I've seen a picture or two of it, but never this much. Thanks for sharing all this. I couldn't live there, but it was wonderful and just right for a wonderfuly lady. Viewers of this video might enjoy Diana Vreeland's autobiographical book "D.V.", terrific reading material.
Affascinante la casa, gran gusto in ogni cosa, lei priva di bellezza, ma ricchissima .
I love it, the apartment is inspiring. Mostly, because I'm an artist and no minimalist either.
She actually said “I want my apartment to look like a garden: a garden in hell!” well, mission accomplished, also, I love it!!
Thank you for your kind words! I'm thrilled that you're enjoying the apartment makeover. Your support means a lot to me.
after said that the housekeeper saying:it's my last day Mrs. Vreeland!
Was this voiced by Jared Harris ? Gorgeous home. I have her signed autobiography on my shelf, impressive woman.
A lot of people Jackie Kennedy’s sister marched drapes with wall paper and massive art collections . Must have been the style of that time . Lots of silks and fabric bold and bright .. as long as Diana loved it is most important
Diana Vreeland says the gift to Vogue she embodied the even more than the current director Anna woinntour. Anna would agree with me that Diana became the embodiment of Vogue everything about Vogue everything good about Vogue
I'm getting a migraine just watching this. Imagine have to live in that apartment.
Love, love love.
I liked her style. Carol from California
You asked a question and I'll give you my answer. No, it not as spectacular as I thought it would be, but it was no doubt innovative for it's day. 🧚♀
Well done. Thank you. A note: Ms. Vreeland and her family pronounced her first name "dee-AH-na," not "die-A-na." A minor quibble, but worth pointing out. If you don't believe me, watch "The Eye Has to Travel," a superb documentary film about Ms. Vreeland's life.
Thanks for that!
Ans this is why people turned on chintz, hahaha! Well they all had it back in the day and the red was a great backdrop for Ms. Vreeland who would stand out in *any* room and this proves it. Absolutely the coolest fashion person ever!
I really like this apartment. Such style!
Thank you 🙏 🎉 ❤ enjoyed the experience!!
I 'completely' respect individualism and style (eclectic being impossible to replicate due to its personal individuality. All that said, personally tI could not live with so much colour in my personal space, although personal and beautiful it is.
Thank you for this amazing video about amazing person!
Amo ver estos videos ver q hay gente q vive realmente en el cielo
No one will be like Diana, she had a keen eye and she knew that different meant new and fantastic and to be embraced and celebrated from Harper's to Vogue to the Met she made an incredible mark in the world of NY and Fashion and she had the most amazing STYLE her best quote will be: There's only one very good life and that's the life you know that you want and you make it yourself! quite true!! The documentary about her was amazing: czcams.com/video/Rh8-6PRiyso/video.html&ab_channel=RottenTomatoesTrailers
One beautiful, tasteful, extremely large dust collector.
She had the money but boy what a house clean up .She had a lot going on in her house
She was not a minimalist (understatement).
Gaudy
@@susanswinskey8573 Lush, lavish and over-the-top, but not vulgar. Highly original at the time.
You are the master of understatement. Dusting that apartment would drive a sane person into the arms of a mental health professional
I wish they'd research their subjects...
@@johnviewpoint7813 😂
Luxurious clutter.
Looks like Sanford and Sons.
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Because of all the red floral designs she loved, Diana called her home "The Garden From Hell".
Such talent!
Vibrant reds, great taste, wonderful staging, however, makes me a bit tired while an admirer of DV.
A 20th Century retelling of "The Emperor's New Clothes."
Its not my thing. Very DV!!! Impeccable!
There is sometimes a fine line between love and hate.
Haut Clutteur
I love these short pieces showing the interiors of famous apartments and homes and the different styles and tastes in lifestyles and furnishings, remembering all the while that these are homes that people come home to, go to sleep and wake up in and carry on with their personal lives. All are gorgeous and unique but some look rather difficult to relax in - where do you flop? Is that couch comfortable to take a nap on? Where can I relax and just do nothing, play a game of cards or a boardgame, read a book or a magazine or watch a movie or TV? Some of these interiors must need dusting and polishing at least once a day to maintain the lush appearance. Just wondering...........
A true Grande Dame...oh la la 😉
Her maiden name, Dalziel, is pronounced "Day-elle'
Rich. Yes. Wonderful, fabulous individual choices. But, somehow together, omgehpachka.
My thoughts? How did she get anything done for all the smoking?
I think you can smoke and do other things at the same time.
Love it ❤
To each her own.
It is her studio. And she has ppl to clean it up
Feel sorry for her house cleaners. She sure loved her dust collectors.
She smokes. I hope that all windows are open and spray lot of Lysol.
I am sure they were paid - they didn't do it for the love of it.
Curious who owns the apartment today and how it looks.
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Holy M.O.G, hardly relaxing is it! Honestly, I couldn’t cope with it at all!
Quite amazing. She had absolutely flawless bad taste.
Shocking how good looking her husband was! 😳
Was???? What dies that mean?....
What happened to her apartment and all the furnishings within the collection?
Each to his own . . . I get dizzy just looking at her "harmonious" apartment.😅
My kinda style.. !!!
I kind of feel epileptic now.
Snort laugh. Thank you.
So glad I wasn’t the house cleaner! Waaaay to busy and stuffed. An organized hoarder! 😮. But to each their own. ❤
So true!
I was shocked by the fact that Diana Vreeland vetoed the first black super model Donyale Loona from appearing in her magazine's publications.
......... she was the queen of chintz'....
Two problems in the narrative: Dalziel is pronoiunced De'el by Scots, and ger father was Scots. Those in the know in NYC pronounced her name Dee-ana, not Die-ana.
Matisse?
A garden in "hell" is right!
4:14 Does anybody know, if that's Richard Avedon behind the camera?
Yes, I believe it is Richard Avedon. It certainly looks like him. He and Diana Vreeland were friends.
@@jasoncyclist Thank you! That's cool. Avedon was everywhere. Extraordinary oeuvre.
I am a Freeland
There’s maximalism and then there’s this. I feel stressed looking at it. Sophisticated hoarder.
