- Outrage is growing after New College of Florida trashed hundreds of books on Thursday, including many from the school’s former gender and diversity center. With the Fall semester not yet underway, there were not many students on campus to witness the act, but those there were angry.
Modern day book burnings. The return to the dark ages has begun.

That's what my university does. No matter how old, there they are on a cart with a "free books"sign on them.
They could’ve sold the books, used the money to pay for improvements to the university or fund a scholarship. Could’ve given books away to other institutions that would gladly take free books.

A college throwing books in the trash is completely unacceptable and quite possibly a direct reflection of what that college stands for and who they are as an institution. Books in a dumpster makes my stomach turn.
These were not official library books. What don't you fools not understand? They get books dumped on them that have nothing to do with college. This is NOT a public library understand? So when something is dropped off on their steps, they don't have any reason to add them to their already full shelves that are books for the students to use for their education. Please get a grip and get in reality.
I use to work in a book store. What was done to books that didn't sell out would tick off a lot of people.

So why can't they donate books that have been purchased with State funds? That's stupid. It sounds to me like their hands were tied. I would also think that this is a general practice of all libraries across the entire country.

There is some sort of rule about the oldest copyright can only be seven years old in libraries that want a certain accreditation. I cannot remember all the specifics since it has been at least five years since I learned about this. Most of the time schools do put the books out for free. But if there was water damage, then mold and mildew is right behind and those books are now a health hazard.
Agreed the books should have been headed to place to generate electricity to power all those EV cars or a.i. use.

What could’ve been done if you didn’t want the books was you sell them something you don’t want other peoples might pay for into a profitable venture then you could’ve used that money to improve the university or fund of scholarship for someone in need you could use the money you made from selling the books to promote your cause of not having books like this here.

Well, I'm not from Florida so I am confused. I thought they banned graphically explicit books (except the Bible). And I thought librarians could be arrested for allowing certain books to be checked out, or even perused. But you also get fired for throwing out the banned books? Seems like librarians in Florida are going to get jailed or fired for whatever they do. By the way, when I was a teacher, I tossed a hundred physics books. Not because I didn't believe in physics, but I had to make room for newer books. I would imagine there is a way bit of difference in an LGBTQ book published in the 20th century vs one published today.

Those books could’ve been sold for profit. They could’ve taken the profits and did something to the university with it. Funded the scholarship for a student in need. You could’ve done something where those books would’ve benefited you financially, and you could’ve gotten them off of your hand since clearly you don’t want them. You didn’t want to tell anyone you were getting rid of them because you knew it would stir up controversy that’s why they did this without telling a soul.

Maybe that would have taken effort and planning. If they literally ordered and paid for so many products they were not going to use I don’t see why they would be competent enough to find them a better home. Waste is common in all places of life and in all industries.
Could also be a PR stunt. But donating anything in large amounts can be hard (and here they seem to not have put in any effort). Must be awful when libraries or book shops close down too. Even selling the books to an online store would be less waste at that point.

My public library puts diacarded books in the Dumpster all the time. We used to go pick some out as teenagers. This person just wants something to be outraged about. If it had all been Bibles she wouldve thought it was great.

The Sarasota library is the last point of use in the Florida college system. I used to read engineering books in that library even though new college does not have any engineering dept.
