There's soul, and there's SOUL - Donny sings with the soul and its spiritual essence. Aretha, Ray Charles, Marvin, and James Brown all had it. You can't play too much soul music, it makes your heart sing. Appreciate it, haven't listen to Donny in a while.
Poor Donny had mental health problems. His biggest worry was losing his music. Even without lyrics he communicated with us on an emotional (and spiritual) level. This song is brilliant the way he inserted little snippets of humanity between the notes ("pass the joint" "better get a job" "party tonight y'all" "leave her alone, man" and the baby crying). He brought us into the world he was singing about. I also wish he was still around.
@@324cmac I agree! War was a big group of tight musicians. Ian Dury's Blockheads in that realm as well. Charley Charles brought some funk to Ian Dury's 'Rhythm Stick'.
Nice! Takes me back to being a kid in the seventies. Now check out some Willie Bobo -- "Fried Neck Bones and Some Homefries" or "Evil Ways" for starters.
Growing up, I was listening to this along with ZZ Top and Led Zeppelin, etc... Thanks for playing Donny Hathaway, and for everything you guys are reacting to...
Donny is killing it on the Fender Rhodes (electric piano). You have to check out the live vid version of this and his cover of "Jealous guy" by John Lennon.
Check out Leroy Hutson stuff who was on Curtom Records through most of the 70s. He shared a room with Donny Hathaway at music college, both musical geniuses. Mark GV - Reference Point
He covers a few Beatles songs that are absolutely gorgeous.. If you could find his live version of Yesterday.. he also covers Jealous Guy by John Lennon
I ran across The Ghetto years after its release. It instantly became a go to tune from then on. Just love everything about this song! Donny is so good here including his keys but the drums / rhythm section and the percussionists set this one on fire🔥
If you enjoyed this, watch this live version which is just incredible. By the way, Donny was using a Wurlitzer electric piano at a time when most soul artist were on the Rhodes and that's why his playing sounds different. Anyhow... czcams.com/video/WkfTLnE5Vtk/video.html
LOVE LOVE LOVE Donny! His duets with Roberta Flack are beyond the beyond! And guys! Please check out his brilliantly gifted daughter, Lalah Hathaway singing “ Something” with jazz fusion band, Snarky Puppy , where she incorporates multi note throat singing !
Never heard this song by Donny. Thanks for bringing it to our attention, it was a great suggestion. For sure, sounds like War and maybe a little bit of Curtis Mayfield from the Superfly album. Total vibe. Thanks La and Che. 🔥✌️
Love Donny Hathaways voice, one of those silky smooth voice of RnB. This is a good song but doesn’t do justice in highlighting his voice; he made his bones as a balladeer, his daughter Layla is truly gifted as well.
I was around when all 3 of the Artist you mentioned were making their music in the early 70s and when heard this by Donnie I didn’t think to myself Oh this sounds like so and so It just sounded like Donnie and some Brothers tearing up 💩 in the studio And the Latin feel and Bosa Nova beat had been around in popular music since the mid 1950s which was first brought into modern Jazz by Dizzy Gillespie and then transitioned in modern popular music (Rock and Roll) I believe y’all are musicians and I like to ask y’all a favor Please Please Please don’t ever ever everrrr call the CONGAS BONGOS AGAIN!!! Cmon now Brothers get yo 💩Together!!!!✊🏿✌🏾🤘🏽🤣🤣🤣
Donny Hathaway Live is a masterpiece you should feature here (I prefer that version of this song with the crowd singing with him). Voice/Soul of God

A tremendous talent gone wait too soon. His music was transcendental. Amazing.😊❤
It does sound like War, and that’s not a bad thing. 🎶
War is one of the greatest bands ever IMO.

A MUST HEAR Ol' school classic used in many movies,, commercials,, etc. & for good reason,, Smith "Baby It's You"
My favorite artist! I bought this album when I was 12, 53 years ago.
The incomparable Donny. What a tragic end. RIP.

Had forgotten just how much this Beautiful music feeds your Soul
Absolutely Exceptional!!!!...
I haven't heard this song in a long, long time! I agree with Santana or War, good observations. I love the organ/keys, too. Really great song.
Love me some Donnie Hathaway
Electric pianos and Hammond organs made classic sounds from these times...
Probably the best singer I have ever heard. And I am one picky motherfucker.

Haha, I was thinking the same thing...sounds like Donny dropped in on a War recording session on this one. I love it though 😎
Chicano Batman "Black Lipstick"...Nuff Said.
The percussion was fabulous!
I recommend “a song for you” by Donny. Even if you’ve heard it a review rather than a reaction would still be cool
💙💙💙💙💙… such an amazing artist!!!🙏🏻🙏🏻

You have to do the live version I bought this in the 70s still have it still play it
A truly unique artist that is well worth your time,, L.A. Salami "I Wear This Because Life Is War" & "I Can't Slow Her Down"
As an old white guy I love this stuff remember it from way back

The baby solo, that was something, I love music
The live version is better IMO. But thanks for covering this.

Sweet! That electric piano has old tubes sound. Old Wurlitzer found it's way into the funk!
Wow - I've never heard this - what a vibe and what a voice! Thanks so much!
He covers a few Beatles songs that are absolutely gorgeous..
If you could find his live version of Yesterday.. he also covers Jealous Guy by John Lennon
Great old stuff!
When I clicked on it I was like " I didn't know Donny Hathaway covered Elvis". You gotta excuse me, I'm really effing high.

The baby crying on this track is Layla Hathaway.
Smooth.
RIP Donny. Great call Che. Sounds a lot like War. Mixture of heavy funck with alot of soul. Thanks fellas for the great reactions. Appreciate you 🙏 ❤
Try one of many his duets with Roberta Flack - I Who Have Nothing is gobsmackingly good.

Reminds me of too shorts version
Wowsa haven’t heard this since the 70s Took me back to dancing too in a seedy UK night club up the East Coast.
Sho nuff!
A tragic story to one of the all-time greats. A really special talent, perhaps second only to Marvin Gaye in that era.
Best groove.
He's playing a 1968 Wurlitzer electric piano
give a listen to Leon Russell A Song For You { Donny Hathaway did a cover of this song } it's a great song do the Live Video please Thanks
