    Somewhere I read, years ago, that the Imperator was slightly top heavy and tended to roll quite a bit in rough seas. In most of the pictures here it does look as if it's listing slightly to starboard. The eagle on the bow made the ship a few feet longer slightly edging out some of its competitors.

    • @zeddeka
      @zeddeka Před 4 měsíci

      Even in calm seas her list was quite noticeable at times. There are lots of photos of Imperator in harbour with an obvious list, leading to the nickname "Limperator". They tried all kinds of things to try and fix it, but nothing quite worked. They reduced the height of the funnels, poured concrete into the hull, and removed heavy furniture and fittings from accommodation. When Cunard got Imperator and changed the name to Berengaria, they were so perturbed by the listing that they considered removing one of the funnels to see if that would help, but decided against.

    Maybe someone else can confirm this but I read somewhere, a long time ago, that the Queen Mary was to be an updated version of the Berengaria but with a floor plan similar to the Aquitania's. Though built in different countries for different companies Queen Mary does look like a further development of the Imperator's design.

    • @zeddeka
      @zeddeka Před 4 lety +2

      Cunard and the Hamburg America line used the same interior designers when building the Aquitania and Imperator class. The different teams were supposed to be working is isolation from eachother, but it seems that they "borrowed" ideas from eachother. Therefore, there were lots of similarities.

    I also seem to remember that the ridiculous figurehead was destroyed during one of her first voyages by a North Atlantic storm that washed green water over the stem. The figurehead was torn clear off its mount and one of the wings was left jammed under one of the bow anchor cables. Neptune does not care to be mocked.

    Georg, I love the Imperator, but I never liked that eagle. It was really ugly. I actually love her without it. I know it was install in a attempt to make longer the the Aquitania, but that eagle clashed terribly with her fine lines. Anyway, Awesome tribute as always.

    • @bradc002
      @bradc002 Před 10 lety +1

      Agree about "top heavy". Had to do with her luxurious finishes high up in the superstructure, a lot of marble and such. She was nick-named the "Limperator" in New York, because she would seem to "limp" into port with her list, a list which is visible in some of the pictures in this video.

    • @jmcuoco9986
      @jmcuoco9986 Před 10 lety +1

      bradc002 I read somewhere that modifications were made to correct Imperator's list. These included shortening the funnels by 3 meters, replacing heavy wood furniture with lighter wicker furniture and removing marble from the higher parts of the ship. Then, 2,000 tons of concrete was poured into the double bottom to balance the ship's center of gravity.

    • @bradc002
      @bradc002 Před 10 lety

      Jack Cuoco It seems, anyway, her list was fixed by the time she became the "Berengaria". The latter never seemed to have the same problem.

    In these shots, one can really see the list to starboard. I think the Americans cruelly nicknamed her the 'Limperator'. It must have broken Albert Ballin's heart when these three grand sisters were separated post WW1. Not a big fan of that garish eagle on her prow either. I understand it was torn off in a gale. I have a good book on the ship called 'Berengaria, Cunard's Happy Ship'...interesting reading about her.

    Also, "schön" war der protzige Pott wirklich nicht, aber die spektakuläre Raumgestaltung in der Ersten Klasse macht auch nach über einem Jahrhundert Abstand einen überwältigenden Eindruck auf den Betrachter. Das Schwimmbad bei 2:09 war eine (etwas verkleinerte) Kopie des Bads im "Royal Automobil Club" in London, das noch heute existiert. Es lohnt sich, Bilder zum Vergleich zu googeln. Der Rauchsalon 1. Klasse bei 0:56 ist erstaunlich rustikal, fast schon etwas schrullig, was für den Grill Room bei 2:23 ebenso gilt. Eine sehr eklektische Mixtur der Dekorationsstile, wie schon bei den White Star Schiffen, wenngleich mit erheblich imposanteren Dimensionen. Was die Innenausstattung betrifft, wirkten die Olympic (und Titanic) im Vergleich schon sehr bescheiden gegenüber dem, was die HAPAG hier bot. Äusserlich jedoch war speziell die Olympic von besonderer Eleganz. Sie war schlicht und einfach eine wirkliche maritime Schönheit, gerade auch, weil sie...nun ja, so schlichte und einfache Linien hatte. So imposant die HAPAG-Riesen waren, ästhetisch konnten sie mit der Olympic nicht mithalten.

    It's "der" Imperator but it's "die" Vaterland, when "Vaterland" is actually a neuter noun taking, "das"? Like in English, is a ship always a "sie" ("she") in German, and the Imperator was an exception at the request of the Kaiser or someone? Was it also "die" Bismarck in German, and not "der" or "das" Bismarck?

For me, as an old privat- Sailor, a Ship posesses a soul and most it is very beautifull. If You are sailing in haevy weather or storm, your ship is your comrade and you are loving it like a fine lady. A ship is not dead, a ship is moving is living !

      The Aquitania's exterior design was always controversial and was often described as "boxy". The designers had taken the unusual step of not having a raised forecastle, with the result that it made the superstructure look too big for the hull from certain angles. The benefit the Imperator class had with three funnels was internal. The rooms inside were massive, and in the Vaterland and Bismarck, they took the novel step of splitting the funnel uptakes to the side of the ship, rather than having them rise straight up through the ship as they had done on all previous ships. The result was to create huge interior space, and the ability for the first time to see straight down the ship with no obstruction. It created an open, airy and spacious feel that just wasn't the case on other liners.
