    I really enjoyed your video, Valentina. You requested feedback, so here goes.
    With respect to LED lighting, I am not exactly sure of your definition. In my home, I have a combination of overhead lighting, chandeliers, table lamps, floor lamps and yes, candles. All of my lighting has LED lightbulbs and most are on dimmers. With such a wide variety of LED lightbulbs (cool, warm, white, soft, etc.), I can find lighting that works for my spaces and still have the benefit of long lasting LED lightbulbs. I will always prefer natural lighting and I am blessed that my house has considerable natural lighting. However, when the sun goes down, you need lights for your work space, your cozy gathering spaces, your nightstands, your bathrooms, etc. You referenced "Balance of Materials" and I think that such a "balance" also applies to lighting.
    I am in the process of renovating (inside and out) my 38 year old house that I have lived in since it was built in 1983. The first thing that I did was to put down hardwoods (Brazilian Cherry) throughout the first floor (including the kitchen), up the stairs and down the upstairs hallway. For the bedrooms that I have redone, I replaced the carpet. One reason was the budget. There are five bedrooms, and even higher end wall to wall carpeting was far less expensive than hardwoods in those rooms. I also like the feeling of carpet in a bedroom, but it was largely driven by budget. I chose very neutral carpet and good padding. Even though I was on the fence about it for a while, those rooms turned out well. And yes, I have greenery throughout my home.
    Sorry this commentary is so long. My house continues to be a work in progress and I so enjoy your videos.

    When my kids were little, my nephew almost lost an eye on a square laminate coffee table. Those corners are very sharp. I only have ottomans or rounded tables as coffee tables. The way a mother designs is different😀. I always think about what could fall on the head of my granddaughter!

    • @katiesoderling3596
      @katiesoderling3596 Před 2 lety

      Yes! Those sharp coffee tables are a huge hazard to toddlers! We had a nice iron coffee table with a glass top from IKEA but when we had our first child we couldn’t afford a new table so I had to put foam bumpers on all the edges. My husband was skeptical that it was needed but, sure enough, my son was always bumping his head on the corners and edges. He avoided a lot of injury because of the foam. With my third and final baby now 7 months old we have an oval table. Not a stuffed ottoman but much better than the sharp edges!

    I love LED lights. I need to see, I love bright lights. I am a beach baby that lives in dreary MN and it is so dark, cold and grey all the time- so giving up my light is not going to happen. That being said- blankets! Yes! Texture yes! Rugs yes- but never in a bathroom!!!! Ick!! 😜 Valentina I really enjoy the community you have created. Agree with you 100% about greenery in your home and no to faux plants. Yes to curtains. Lived without drapes for ten years. The only room I like carpet in is my bedroom but I live in a place with very cold winters. The other thing that feels luxurious and high end to me is an elegant curated space without lots of visual clutter.

  • @ktg8670

    When it comes to curtains, I think it depends upon the structure of the space, in addition to the decor style. I often like the look of bare windows with black accent in a place that has an industrial vibe, but that isn't the aesthetic of my apartment. I recently purchased white semi-sheer linen curtains and absolutely love the look!

    I love your tips, and these are some of the best!
    Although my home is shoe 👠 free, I do not go barefooted! I have two pairs of house shoes that are worn only in the house and provide socks 🧦 or shoe covers for guests. I do have rugs beside every bed in my house and also area rugs throughout. The floors are either hardwood (in the living room) or laminate wood (kitchen, dining room, bedrooms). One bathroom is tiled, the other laminate wood. And there are rugs by the shower in both.
    As to the other items you discussed, my house is an old Victorian and at first I tried to keep things period appropriate. Then I decided this was our home, not a museum. I still have some antiques, mostly family heirlooms, but our master bedroom is definitely not of the Victorian era! It is comfortable and what suits us!

    One way I am considering a luxurious space is removing the annoying mud room space in my hallway and replacing it with a beautiful beverage center. Custom cabinetry with glass doors, a beverage fridge, wine space, coffee bar. I HATTTEE the mud room space as you see it from my front entry and the clutter drives me nuts. (Moving it to the garage). We have beautiful coffee makers and my hubby has an extensive liquor collection that should be displayed. There will be a form of dimmable lighting as this seems appropriate for the dark space.

    There's a difference between luxurious and formal--a lot of the things you mentioned like uncomfortable, stiff fabrics; or seating w/cushions that are too hard or firm, I associate with that formal living room that no one ever uses because everything is uncomfortable.
    More expensive homes have more formal spaces, and these often get photographed and shown in magazines like Architectural Digest because the *look* beautiful. The living spaces people use everyday are less likely to be in magazines (except for a kitchen). Luxury and formality became synonymous; only recently have we started questioning the difference and showcasing the spaces people actually spend time in.
    Thanks for the video, they're always worth watching!

However there are already wooden blinds on the doors and they seemed very hard to penetrate the wood doors for hanging. Thoughts?

Although natural light is of course best ( and I am also blessed with a surplus of large windows ) ALL of my bulbs are LED and are "warm", "soft" or "daylight" depending on the location ( even my industrial filament bulbs are LED and are very hard to tell from the incandescent version) - and, like Cheryl, most are on dimmers. Perhaps it's the cool, harsher LED lighting that some find objectionable. I believe LED has come a LONG way from the earlier versions. Maybe a further vlog on lighting is needed where you can give us examples of well-lit rooms. I'm sure your other followers would appreciate it too! xoxo

      Kelv9ns give you the warmth or coolness of the light. 3000 or less is soft & warm 400 and going up is bluer and more harsh so pick the right LEDs or mix for your space. Your electricity bill will thank you & remember to recycle them with other electronics as they must not go in the garbage or regular recycle.

    Love your tips! Really affecting how we approach our diy renovation. I'm bringing in some black into it furniture when I really never thought I would (after years of wearing mostly black as a musician😅). We aren't high end at all, but i think we'll be able to create an enjoyable and highly SELLABLE space with so many of your tips. We have been here a bit over a year, with a bit of acreage, but the house is the biggest deterrent for me/us, and any potential buyer.
    I hate LED lights. The warm are ok ish. My dad has to teach under them, and he's pointed out that they're harder on old eyes, and my eyes are just sensitive, my prescription gives normal old people vertigo😂

    This is a case where you can have your cake and eat it, too. Your objections to LED lights (that they are artificial) has a LOT to do with the bulb color and intensity and very little to do with the source. The lights you object to would be equally heinous as incandescent or halogen. There is a reason jewelry stores use halogen lights - they create sparkle. LEDs that are properly tuned (the right color for the environment and the right intensity for the application) are indistinguishable from incandescent lights. One of the tricks I use in my lighting schemes is to use "bastard amber" (an odd peachy/pinky/iodine color). It is the color of light that restaurants use to make food look good and that high-end boutiques use to make their clothes look good. It imitates "golden hour" lighting so beloved by photographers. I always use LEDs because they are the most eco-friendly and the most adaptable light sources around. I can get them set for any color I want - just don't ever get "daylight" LEDs they are way too bright and cold for most applications. Don't fall for "soft white" either. That's usually awful as well. Specify a specific 'Kelvin' color, put everything on dimmers, and design your lights for the environment.

    • @UnseenSpirit
      @UnseenSpirit Před 3 lety +1

      What would bastard amber be officially called? I want to check it out on a website to potentially buy :)

    • @lindacgrace2973
      @lindacgrace2973 Před 3 lety +1

      @@UnseenSpirit Believe it or not, the technical name IS 'bastard amber.' *LOL* only lighting techs could come up with that terminology! When I can't find an electrician who can 'tune' the LEDs (or, there' no budget for multi-color LEDs), I use filter gels over the fixture. You can get them on Amazon www.amazon.com/Filters-Medium-Bastard-Amber-Filter/dp/B00SIKFC3Y/ref=sr_1_2?dchild=1&keywords=bastard+amber+gel&qid=1625802582&sr=8-2

    I grew up with wool rugs in our home. My mom paid the higher price for better carpeting for it’s luxury, comfort to walk or lay on (as a kid I was always playing games and things on the floor) and most importantly it’s durability. I have a wool Pottery Barn area rug in my home that is very pretty, comfortable to walk on in bare feet and is holding up beautifully for over 15 years. Amazingly it’s still in style too. You might be pleasantly surprised how nice the rug you have ordered will be. Please let me know what you think.

    Hi Valentina! I have two toddlers aged 4 and 2, and it’s my life’s motto to have a luxurious looking comfortable, approachable house that’s budget friendly. It does get a little tricky with young kids but I aim to have a house that I love being in since I’m a stay at home mom. It was amazing how I do a lot of the things you mentioned. I do have a question though, what do we do after the sun sets, to keep a nice ambiance in our living space. I feel like warm lighting preferably in the form of lamps (table and floor) is my jam! I was surprised at that point. I do agree that it can look a little commercial with too many lights if they’re overhead. What do you have to say about that?

      dimmers!! put dimmers on all your over head lighting it will change your life. also light bulb color and kelvin degrees do a little research on the bulbs and you can do what i did and actually buy several types/colors/kelvin and see which you like best. but DIMMERS are the way to really give you better control i put dimmers in my apartment and its a rental well worth the price.

    The “lighting” comments confused me. I understood that incandescent lights (if not illegal) were frowned on by the EPA. I did read the long comment re lighting below, and absolutely agree. I also understood (and i may be wrong) that they are more environmentally friendly.
    Re greenery: i always had indoor plants. My husband brought us a cat …. And Chuckie boy eats plants, even expensive artificial ones. I wanted to strangle them both when Chuck ate a dozen roses. His other cat has ruined upholstered furniture. Both of them think wicker ( i live at the beach) also is for climbing and scratching.
    I have two dogs, who think our bed belongs to them, matelase coverlets and quilts have saved my duvet covers …. Are easily washable but thanks. Monica
