HMS Pinafore: When I was a lad & Ruler of the Queen's Navee

- This short extract was from the The Gilbert & Sullivan Society of North Louisiana's 1999 production of HMS Pinafore, directed by John Matthews.
Superb local baritone Richard King, as The Rt. Hon. Sir Joseph Porter, KCB, First Lord of the Admiralty, informs the assembled party how he came to be "Ruler of the Queen's Navee."
This was recorded on a modest Sony camcorder with on-board microphone. The performance was, of course, not amplified in any way - true G & S. John Matthews is "old school" "If you can't be heard at the back of the auditorium, you have no business being on stage!" - Zábava
This is so much better than the "slapstick" versions on CZcams.
So many of us love G&S, and so few of us can pull it off well. This is excellent! Costumes, sets, choreography - and a marvelous lead. Thanks for posting!
I love how land lubbers go below as soon as the seas get choppy. It provides a short respite, but in the long run it actually makes it worse. The fresh air of the top deck, and being able to lock your eyes on the horizon help a great deal with sea sickness.
Brilliant,
perfect pronunciation resulting in total clarity.
Thank you so much.
@rearvumirror
Thank you. It is nice to see an authentic version.
this song appeals to me because it is so true. I worked for a government agency with lots of political hires as related this. "Stick close to your desk and never go to sea..." No kidding, whatever you do don't know anything about that which you intend to lead :)
Yes, I saw that happen a lot when I worked for the State of NY. Loved my civil service jobs, but hated the political appointments.
I was Cousin Hebe in a production at Loughborough University in 1993. I love G&S, the lyrics are so witty and some are still relevant even nowadays.
Most enjoyable post - "Ruler of the Queen's Navee" is surely the "Yes, Minister" of it's day :)
Yes, you do wonder how some of these top jobs are filled!
@@hreader Friends or family of the governor or mayor, etc.
They do have a devoted enough following here in the States. I was first introduced to them when I lived for a year in London in 1972-73. We were lucky enough to see many of them at the Savoy Theatre. I recently attended an excellent local performance of The Mikado, which played to an enthusiastic full house.
wow this an amazing performance by richard king
i would love to see the whole performance
Baby wail. Cough cough. Murmur. Yes...The joy of going to a play.
I wholehearedly agree with an earlier comment - this is the best amateur production of Pinafore on CZcams!
Please post more.
Brilliant! G & S seems remarkably popular in America.
Very good, very direct, very clear, and with the humour coming from Gilbert's lyrics, and not a lot of silly camp fussiness.
This director should be congratulated.
BTW I used to sing in the D'Oyly Carte chorus,so I do have a little experiencec! LOL
His sisters and his cousins and his aunts!!! I will keep repeating this in my head all day xd
I remember when MAD Magazine did a piece on John F. Kennedy based on Pinafore, where JFK sang:
"I bought Wisconsin with my dough you see,
And now I'm the leader of the whole coun-try.."
They did a similar parody for Dick Tracy.
still my favorite version of this on CZcams
"...you have no business being on stage!" True that! Thanks for the share, I've watched this several times over the past few years and I think Richard King's portrayal of this song is the best that I've seen. Well done to this troupe and thanks for the share!
Speaking as a UK resident I think this is a brilliant rendition! Full marks also for the performers' English accents!
OH, this performance is just splendid! LOVE LOVE LOVE it.
wonderful that G&S is so popular in America
Great Stuff!! - G&S fan
Beautifully performed with clarity!
Brilliant!!! I grew up with G + S and still love their work!
The final note should be from a triangle. Love this version and my fiancé cat loves this
This song is contagious. G&S were geniuses.
This is definitely one of the best HMS Pinafore performances I have ever seen on CZcams, and therefore ever seen at all. Also, the singing is much better than on the recording I own. Excellent job!
Who is this Richard King? His gestures and expressions capture the grace, arrogance and cowardice of the Ruler of the Queen's Navee. And the use of the props ugh... so beautiful. This level of acting is the work of someone who has mastered his art!
Brilliant performance!
We're doing this with Trial by Jury in July in New Zealand! It's gonna be mint!
Great rendition! I love G&S. I live in Scotland where it's rarely performed- it's considered too "English". Flying a union flag also has very different connotations here! Shame but thanks for the posting!
GREAT STUFF GREAT STUFF INDEED
Probably my favorite rendition I have ever seen. Bravo!
What a great job they did.
Excellent job! And thanks for posting the lyrics. :-)
The word 'desks' is possibly the funniest in English theater.
Very nicely dione!
@folkiekev "as camp as a row o' tents" I like that!!
This is a great version! Kudos!!
Delightful. I think Richard King has a wonderful quality in his work, especially for this role. Thanks for sharing!
Great rendition! Cheers from Australia.
Excellent
fantastic
An object lesson in how to get ahead:)
Great stuff. Thanks for sharing this (and the other clips) with us.
I've had a soft spot for G&S since appearing in a production of this at school in 1973.
Best wishes to you and the rest of the cast
A truly delightful production! Thanks.
fantastica
Great rendition! Richard King is my slightly-less-talented borhter!
Very well done! I have looked at this clip, and the other one from this production, and I have to say the stage direction is really very good -- so good, you hardly notice it. Everyone seems to be in the right place at the right time.
And who is this guy Richard King? He is brilliant! Is he a professional? Are there any more clips of him?
how cool is this!? I wonder if there is one playing near me..
I LOVE THIS SONG
wow brilliant performance !!! he nailed the british aristocrat
speaking as a limey myself i've got to say he deserves high accolade
as camp as a row o' tents, superb stuff!!
WOW! You misspeak...
There is a work of art (on a disney scale AN 11) which has this tune in passing.
Rikki Tikki Tavi Part 1 of 3 youtube
wonderful
Delightful indeed! I am even considering to be ruler of the Queen´ navee
Very well done!
I love the fact this has subtitles ... musical Karaoke!!
This is super awesome
I saw this in Naperville. Unfortunately, the person who played Sir Joseph sang so quietly you could not hear him.
At 3.11 for a bit, there's a cat chipping in. How nice.
@clearly Thank you for this information. When I watch the video again, it adds a whole new layer of humour to it for me, and I am sure to the audiences of the day. I wonder if G & S included similar political barbs in their other shows?
Bravi, proprio bravi.
You gets what you pays for.
this is Stewie from family guy
i get to perform this at school....
so good I can understand every word!
Now if American audiances could just learn when and how to applaud. We went to a thing, they kept standing-O, holy heck, everything even when the stagehands came out (OK I exaggerate but it was close).
Did you know that Rogers & Hammerstein copied the form of Gilbert & Sullivan? In their memories, Hammerstein would write the lyrics separately then send them to Rogers to compose the music, same as did G&S. Oklahoma! was written the same way as well as H.M.S. Pinafore.
lol...funny theory lad.....not true in the least though.

@BenAliGtor Are you serious? You are a master of very obscure information. I must remember this in case it ever comes up on Jeopardy!
Remind me, what proportion of Members of Parliament (or Congress) are career lawyers? At least 90%?
Check the original libretto.
Oh man, he missed a beat at 3:47... at least he made a quick recovery before it could have blown up.
Indeed! hahaha [:p]
g&s rules
@rearvumirror Thanks!
@rearvumirror no problem lol Honestly, I would see it in person If I could~
On an episode of the simpsons sideshow bob, a character voiced by Kelsey Grammer, sings a piece of For he is a English Man.
Not only does he have a great voice- his accent is convincing. Take it from a Londoner.
I don't know what elucidate means, but I will explain it to you =).
In the family guy movie, when both Stewies are practicing 'intercourse' and that one episode where Stewie imagines himself as a Captain. In both these scenes, he sings this song!
=D Hope this helps
Alright!
:D
Are there any more clips from this production ?
Several
Ever hear Alan Sherman's thing "When I was a lad"?
@clearly That is very interesting. I wonder if he ever saw the show. And if so, I wonder if he thought the song was merely poking fun, or malicious.
it's supposed to be a ship's sirene
Did`nt pants have flies back then? No wonder everybody looked so uptight.
"The Royal Navy is proud to announce its new fleet of Type 45 destroyers
Having initially named the first two ships HMS Daring and HMS Dauntless, the Naming Committee has, after intensive pressure from Brussels, renamed them HMS Cautious and HMS Prudence.
The next five ships are to be HMS Empathy, HMS Circumspect, HMS Nervous, HMS Timorous and HMS Apologist.
Costing £850 million each, they comply with the very latest employment, equality, health and safety and human rights laws.
The Royal Navy fully expects any future enemy to be jolly decent and to comply with the same high standards of behaviour.
The new user-friendly crow's nest has excellent wheelchair access.
Live ammunition has been replaced with paintballs to reduce the risk of anyone getting hurt and to cut down on the number of compensation claims.
Stress counsellors and lawyers will be on board, as will a full sympathetic industrial tribunal.
The crew will be 50/50 men and women, and will contain the correct balance of race, gender, sexuality and disability.
Sailors will only work a maximum of 37hrs per week as per Brussels Rules on Working Hours, even in wartime.
All the vessels are equipped with a maternity ward, a crèche and a gay disco.
Tobacco will be banned throughout the ship, but recreational cannabis will be allowed in wardrooms and messes.
The Royal Navy is eager to shed its traditional reputation for; "Rum, sodomy and the lash"; so out has gone the rum ration, replaced by sparkling water.
Sodomy remains, now extended to include all ratings under 18. The lash will still be available on request.
Saluting of officers is now considered elitist and has been replaced by "Hello Sailor".
All information on notice boards will be in 37 different languages and Braille.
Crew members will now no longer have to ask permission to grow beards and/or moustaches. This applies equally to female crew.
The MoD is inviting suggestions for a "non-specific" flag because the White Ensign may offend minorities. The Union Jack must never be seen.
The newly re-named HMS Cautious will be commissioned shortly by Captain Hook from the Finsbury Park Mosque who will break a petrol bomb over the hull.
She will gently slide into the sea as the Royal Marines Band plays "In the Navy" by the Village People.
Her first deployment will be to escort boatloads of illegal immigrants to ports on England 's south coast.
The Prime Minister said, "Our ships reflect the very latest in modern thinking and they will always be able to comply with any new legislation from Brussels .
"
His final words were, "Britannia waives the rules."
Hear! Hear! Whatever Brussels whatever wants, eh? LOL!
Brilliant. As an Indian, I am outraged at the plight that the UK is going to have.
One tiny issue with this video, the rest of it being very good and enjoyable to watch is that its Navy not navee.
Read the libretto.
OMG What the PHUCK!!! THIS RULES!! I can't adequately articulate how awesome this is. I can't even attempt it. I'm mad drunk And This is MAD AWESOME. Pinafore Phucking OWENS HANDS THE FUCK DOWN. Not enough props in english, y'all. Me n; m'friends are gonna make a pomo FILM of HMS Pinafore this yerr, Stay abrizzest.
No, actually is Henry Charles Albert David Mountbatten-Windsor ! Hahaha :p
@rearvumirror Don't believe me, eh? On CZcams, look up "It Gets Better King Brothers" I can't post the link here, it isn't allowed.
But tell me, are you in the video playing the role?
Fantastic performance....perhaps a touch fast...203 is a bit rushed....192 is more like it.
"were" awarded ?
god im a soloist for "in serving writs..." lol first time doing a solo... :(
Great but what;s up with English sub-titles of English songs??
@clearly Are you saying that this song was based on a real character?
@rearvumirror Huh that's rather odd, and I do appologise re-reading my comment it did come across as being quite rude.
This is good, but the one at Stratford 2017 is better. GO SEE IT WHILE YOU STILL CAN!
Did anyone else see the cat
Not a proper ship without a cat.
every five minutes
Too bad these classics will soon be forogtten, becuase the younger generation will not like these.
imsokewl27 Some sort of good news is that my 7 yr old son loves G and S.
Glad to hear it!!
imsokewl27 Just not true, I'm a student and we all love 'em. Seem to be coming back into fashion here in Britain. Like the battle-flag avatar by the way. ;)
I don't mean in Briton. I'm talking about across the pond over here in the states.
Ah, I'm sorry to hear that :/
the simpsons.....sideshow bob
