In this video I'll discuss every aspect of identity theft recognition, prevention, and what to do. Here are the highlights...
Identity theft is the crime of stealing and impersonating another individual’s identity for financial gain. How much of a problem is it?
    -14.4 million ID theft victims
    -$1.7 billion in out-of-pocket costs
-1 in 15 people were affected
-Average cleanup from an ID theft was six months and 200 hours
-Average cost was $600 per incident.
How do you know when your personal info was compromised?
    1. Your bank statement doesn’t look right or your checks bounce.
    2. You see unfamiliar and unauthorized activity on your credit card or credit report.
    3. Your bills and mail are missing or you receive unfamiliar bills.
    4. You get denials for loan applications
    5. You notice an unexpected drop in your credit score.
    6. Your cell phone or another utility loses service.
    7. You receive calls from debt collectors for accounts you didn’t open.
    8. Your medical bill doesn’t add up, or your medical claim is denied.
    9. You’re unable to file taxes because someone has already filed a tax return in your name.
    10. You’re notified that your information was exposed in a data breach.
If you have confirmed that you are a victim of identity theft...
    1. Place a fraud alert with all three major CRAs and get your credit reports:
    TransUnion.com/fraud
    1-800-680-7289
    Equifax.com/CreditReportAssistance
    1-888-766-0008
    Experian.com/fraudalert
    1-888-397-3742
    2. Call any company where you know fraud occurred and close or freeze all accounts. If you don’t close them, at least change all PINs and logins.
    3. Report identity theft to the FTC. Go to IdentityTheft.gov or call 1-877-438-4338. Include as many details as possible. Based on the information you enter, IdentityTheft.gov will create your Identity Theft Report and recovery plan.
    4. Close new accounts opened in your name.
    5. Remove bogus charges from your accounts.
    6. Correct your credit report with the big three CRAs by contacting their fraud departments.
    TransUnion
    Fraud Victim Assist. Dept.
    P.O. Box 2000
    Chester, PA 19022-2000
    Equifax
    P.O. Box 105069
    Atlanta, GA 30348-5069
    Experian
    P.O. Box 9554
    Allen, TX 75013
    7. Consider adding an extended fraud alert or credit freeze to your reports.
    8. If you suspect a misused Social Security number, review your Social Security work history. You do this by creating an account at this address ssa.gov/myaccount. If you find errors, contact your local Social Security Administration office.
    9. If you suspect your taxes have been filed by someone else, contact the IRS to let them know.
    10. If you suspect medical services were provided to someone else under your name, contact your health insurance provider.
    11. Stop debt collectors from trying to collect debts you don't owe. FTC’s IdentityTheft.gov can help you with the proper letters to write.
    12. Replace government-issued IDs at your first opportunity.
    13. Finally, clear your name of potential criminal charges by letting your local police department know of the ID theft right away. That way if someone uses your name in a crime, you won’t be confused w that person. This sounds unlikely, but it has happened in the past.
Here are some steps you can take to minimize the chances you will fall victim to ID theft, or not allow the thieves to do too much damage if it happens.
    1. Freeze your credit. A freeze will stop all activity on your credit file, and since a credit check is always required, this will stop anyone trying to open a new account. To freeze or unfreeze your credit call or go online with all three CRAs.
    -TransUnion: Call 888-909-8872 or:
    transunion.com/credit-freeze
    -Equifax: Call 800-349-9960 or:
    equifax.com/personal/credit-report-services
    -Experian: Call 888 397 3742 or:
    experian.com/freeze/center.html
    2. Safeguard your Social Security Number. Don’t carry your card with you, and be sure to securely store or shred paperwork containing it.
    3. Scrub your social media and do not give away any personal data. Do not reveal your mother’s maiden name or your exact birth day.
    4. Monitor your medical and financial records.
    5. Shred everything. Shred all unsolicited credit card offers or opt out for five years by calling 1-888-5-OPT-OUT (1-888-567-8688) or visit OptOutPrescreen.com.
    6. Keep an eye on your mail. Use a secure mailbox, and retrieve your mail immediately.
    7. Keep an eye on your wallet or purse in public.
    8. Secure your online data and use strong passwords.

Nowadays if you don't freeze your 3 main credit bureau accounts, then you might be in trouble. You also need to freeze Checksystem account too. Those 4 accounts are the keys to make your life miserable, so freeze them to save yourself. Those 4 accounts are allowable for unfreezing any time.

While @Taunt or whatever in your comment section is technically correct, in no way does this negate your original question, and what a hellova fact you're making! You are validated in thinking, or, allow me to say; believing this for what it is! Great question! Why dont they? We've all learned how to keep our private info secure and now we're paying for someone elses break in FTC protocol? Someone who logged in the companies email while at Starbucks? You & I know never to do this! In fact, you will receive a pop-ups warning you "this network is not safe." And yet, here we are.. Not changing the company's passwords every 60 days? No worries, its just someone elses private information that will follow them the rest of their lives! Not us! this way! Necause it sure seems like common sense. These companies are hiding that fact, blameshifting ANY of their failure to protect. If I were to do this? I'd be facing 5 or more years in federal prison, a $10G fine, or more, and hopefully both! I see your comment was made 9 months ago, it's even more valad this week! I see multiple others have taken just a moment to comment. It sure pisses me off this "expert on what to do" whose claim is the be here for us goes totally silent. And now he expects me to watch his video? F HIM!? I'll take my stolen information elsewhere! Its not likely that someone can steal your identity and open accounts in your name with just your name/address/birthday. Its not quite THAT easy, especially not now in 2021. In the past maybe, but today you need more identification and personal info. However, this info is still valuable as its another few pieces in the puzzle for a thief. Additionally this information can be used to trick you, or someone close to you, into revealing more info, including critical items like Social Security number. Best bet is to keep ALL your info as private as possible, and definitely don't post your exact birthday and place of birth online or reveal it to strangers.

@@jwd3503 shit, never ever give out your bank account info. Has any money been withdrawn out of you bank account? If so, call your bank and tell them that you noticed money missing from your account and that you didn’t authorize the transaction. Calm Identity Theft, and tell them to close the account and open a new account.
If no money has been taken out of your bank account, go ahead a close the account anyway and open a new account. If you gave out your SS number, and your date of birth, your mothers Maiden name you have to call all 3 credit bureau and put a freeze of your line of credit. Freezing your line of credit means you nor anyone else can use your name/SS number to get a credit, buy a car, boat or house. Keep it frozen until you need to buy a big ticket item like a car, boat, house etc. then freeze your credit again. If you have credit cards call the credit card company and have them issues new cards. They will do this with no problem. Better to be safe then sorry. Use an app like Credit Karma, it’s free and it’s a great app to use to keep an eye on your credit score and you can dispute charges on the site as well. It’s very helpful tool to use.

Freeze your credit. A freeze will stop all activity on your credit file, and since a credit check is always required, this will stop anyone trying to open a new account using your SSN. To freeze or unfreeze your credit call or go online with all three CRAs.

    • @KeystoneFinancialAcademy
      @KeystoneFinancialAcademy  Před rokem +1

It's hard to say. Possibly not much without also having your Social Security Number, but I wouldn't take chances. The best advice is to contact all three of the credit bureaus (Experian, TransUnion, and Equifax) and freeze your credit files. That way the thieves can't open any account in your name. Keep the files frozen until you need a creditor to take a look. You can unfreeze for a period of time (a week), and then freeze again. It's really the best advice to protect your credit!

What if a person has my name, address and birthdate? Is that enough information to get identity theft?

    • @KeystoneFinancialAcademy
      @KeystoneFinancialAcademy  Před 2 lety +1

Name and address alone isn't really enough to cause problems. Having a birthdate adds a bit to it, but still not enough. The thief would also need a key piece of info like your Social Security Number. That can potentially cause more problems for you - and this is why you should really guard your SSN. These days it is (thankfully) more difficult to open new accounts, with more pieces of identity verification needed, so if someone just has what you listed (and nothing else) then you're likely ok. The BEST way to protect yourself however is to FREEZE YOUR CREDIT. I describe how to do that extensively in the video and in the the description below it. If your credit is frozen, no one can do anything to it, and the CRAs go through great lengths before they unfreeze it by asking you questions only you would know.

    • @KeystoneFinancialAcademy
      @KeystoneFinancialAcademy  Před 2 lety +3

I presume you mean when someone steals your actual physical passport? I don't specifically address this in my video, but it does happen of course. Stolen and forged passports can be used by criminals to enter/exit countries that don't have anything more sophisticated than an "eyeball check" at the border. The best action to take is to report the passport "lost or stolen" by calling the National Passport Information Center at 877-487-2778. You can also go online at travel.state.gov. You will need to file Form DS-64 and Form DS-11 to actually report the loss and apply for a new passport.

Unlikely. They would still be missing your Social Security Number...BUT, when in doubt, I always recommend freezing your credit! Then, even if your identity is stolen, the thieves can't do anything with the information.

Thanks. In our country, we don't have social security number and fraud can't do any harm with my passport number to my bank account or credit account. There is no connection between our passport number and bank account in our country. I am more worried about whether they can create new bank account or take loan using my passport number and academic documents in foreign countries. As far as I know, they will probably apply for the job with my name and my academic documents.
