6800 groupy, rim brakes, alloy rims, speed/cadence doobry.... just goes to show you don't need the dearest and newest to run a lovely looking bike. Not quite old enough to be called vintage, but this era of bike is really 👌to me.

I think my favorite progression in this series is the introduction of the lubricant holder/organizer
It’s funny really not only as a business but also as a CZcams channel we are constantly evolving. Simons spent a small fortune on his side of things and this was another one of those subtle changes. For me personally all day long the bench was exactly that, for tools and components, but for filming we always move things out of the background. So we’ve been using a stool for tools. The same week we got the syringe holder we also got a three tier trolly for moving around the bike & it’s been the biggest game changer so far, not only for filming but daily bikes too! Wish I’d brought one years ago! 👍🏻🧡⚙️

I am fortunate to have a winter bike, so thankfully this easier to maintain bike gets the worst of the seasons.

I just put on a new set of Schwalbe studded tires for our icy and snowy MN winters. Thanks to you all, I made a point to line up the tire logos with the stem and confirm the rotational direction. First time I detached the rear wheel with the Enviolo hub. That was an adventure.

Separate winter bike is a must in UK. Every ride it needs a proper clean. Top tip, liqui moly marine grease is superb at keeping the bearings protected and lasts ages.

8:13 You’ve got the new masterlink on in the wrong direction. In the 8:11 shot when it came in it was on right. It’s not surprising though. I’ve seen several friends bikes come out of the shop with their master link put back on wrong.

I keep my precious S-Works next to me in the living room, dry and warm once night frost hits the country (Amsterdam, basically the same weather type as you have on your side of the pond).
Autumn/Winter is the period for me to take the gravelbike to the countryside or the beach.

This just shows how important to do regular maintenance on bikes. If the chain was regularly cleaned and lubricated, and swapped every once in a while, the cassette probably wouldn’t be that worn.
Absolutely! It’s much more cost effective to change your chain regularly⚙️
I "repurpused" my old MTB as winterbike when I bought me a new one. Got a second set of wheels and put the Schwalbe spiker tyres on (Nokian tires would have been much better, but they weren't available at this point), so it takes me just a few moments to convert my winter bike into a heavy duty snow & ice winter bike.

cheap winter bike with 8-speed set and mudguards is the way to go (parts cost peanuts to replace)
I just bought a similar setup. Aluminium frame so I don't worry about rust on it.
Mudguards are an absolute essential 🧡

Season here in Finland is already 10cm of snow 🤘😎🇫🇮 Ride my Giant Revolt with a wide tread tyres in the snow. When it starts to freeze I’ll use my commuter bike that has the 240 stud front tyres and 120 stud rear tyres. This bike has mudguards etc. 🙌😎

From Melbourne (Australia). Very temperate here, not really all that wet either. Don't need to do anything different here in the winter vs. the summer. Even use the same lube (Silca SS). Clip on/off on mudguards are plenty for the intermittent showers we have for commuting.
That’s great wether for riding, a lot of riding stops in winter over here 🧡
Just take the headset bearings out, gently pop the seals off, and give them a thorough cleaning using hot water and Dawn dishwashing liquid. Be like brand new. Then just inject some grease and pop the seals back in and assemble. No need to replace them if they’re “not that bad yet”.

Love your channel and the attention to detail especially catching the skew spring being flip flopped. I live in the south eastern US so we rarely get snow. I do have a touring bike with fenders if I want to ride in crap weather.

@Bikespeeds As always, this was such a rewarding rebuild to watch. Your channel has quickly become one of my favorites on CZcams. I actually own a circa 2012 Giant TCR, so it was fun to see you working this one!
I've actually had an issue with the bottom bracket shell on my TCR. I attempted to remove the press fit bottom bracket a few months ago, and I was horrified to see that these metal cylinders came out with the bottom bracket. These cylinders are meant to be glued inside the bottom bracket shell. I glued them back inside with an epoxy and reinstalled the BB. So far, no issues, but I have low confidence that the shell will stand the test of time.
Have you ever encountered this issue with these older Giants? If so, do you have any recommendations for maintenance?
Thanks for the support jack. We feel these days bottom brackets are a weak point on most modern bikes but varies bike to bike so whilst we don’t have much advice we can imagine the problem you’re in🧡
Nice video as always. I'm fortunate to be able to run 2 dedicated winter bikes; a single speed and geared bike, both with full mudguards. I like to use the best components I can afford as I like to ride outside all of winter and in the UK that can be a good 4 months or more!

I have a new set of tyres ready to fit, they are now going to have the logo lining up with the valve, that is a detail that I have never thought of, hopefully my wife does not think I have caught her OCD

What I am doing in the winter...when I am not on the ship around the world I clean the bikes every day :)) I have a Specialized tarmac sl6 ultegra di2 and dt swiss wheels and a bixs full suspension with shimano xt and dt swiss 1501 carbon wheels...My bikes don't know how is to ride on cold :)) . For winter I use a Scott 920 full suspension with sram and road bike a m-wave with dura ace.
Sounds to me like you have an N+1 problem! Do they have an exercise bike onboard at work?
@@Bikespeeds we have also road bikes on board but unfortunately not to much time to go out in ports and also because of covid pandemic a lot of ports are blocking the crew members to go off ship ..so yes..N+many problems! But always,from around the world i enjoy videos made by you sir!

Love a guide on how to fit a bsa bottom bracket and re install cranks. I can never get it right.
Did the bolts before I did the preload. There was also a gap between crank and BB
Turn both cups backwards to install. Left cup is right-hand threaded (clockwise to install) and right cup is left-hand threaded (anti-clockwise to install).
Shimano Hollowtech II cranksets are always installed by preloading the BB first (bottom out, then back out a quarter turn), then torquing down the pinch bolts. After that, check for crankset freeplay. You don't want the left crankarm to fall out.

Just out of curiosity, is there a reason you don't have a bench mat to put the freshly washed parts onto for them to drip dry, as opposed to allowing the water to puddle up on the bare bench to be wiped up later?

We don’t actually work on the bench like this day too day. It’s just better lighting for filming so we only ever get it wet for the 5 or so minutes of washing down each week when we film🧡
What Ultrasonic cleaner do you use ?
Have a question. I have a 2015 specialized diverge carbon with 135 mm rear axel. I thought I had 142mm. But I just bought a set of carbon Vision Tc30 wheelset and it is a 142mm. On non drive side it has a preload adjuster. The wheel fits perfect and everything lines up without the non drive side end cap. The preload adjuster slides nicely into the frame no binding and wheel spins freely do you think it will be ok without the end cap. Thanks and great content,👍
Its winter here in the west coat of the usa and i usally get my bikes serviced after winter.
It’s important to have all the winter salts removed before they start corroding away so that’s a good time to get your service in🧡

Looking great - what's your preferred qucik link / chain manufacturer? I'm looking to change both my 10s tiagra & ultegra bikes to it from Shimano through-pin chain, but the range of choice is overwhelming!
Take a look at Connex chains. Their quick-links don't need quick-link pliers to be removed thanks to a pocketed groove in the quick-link halves that prevent them from backing out on their own.

It serves two purposes: Maintain the smootheness of the springs and/or protect them from water/dirt to prevent rust.

This bike was really easy to assemble czcams.com/users/postUgkxMesz3KOGEmwmvyKQfLfrRSUXLFzfVHZA and required very few adjustments out of the box. The wheels did not require any truing/adjustments. The frame had some small scratches, but nothing major.I did replace the seat though - the seat it came with was very uncomfortable. The tires need to be re-inflated every 4-5 days, but this appears to be quite common for the narrow 700x25 tires.Overall, in my opinion, this bike looks and rides like a much more expensive bike.
how many kms does the bike have?
Could you swap replace an 11:32 cassette with an 11:34 (for easier climbing)? Or would you need to replace the rear derailleur as well?
That depends on front chainset ratio and what derailleur your set is running. If you look up your derailleur you should be able to find the info you need.
If the derailleur is okay for it, you’ll need to do the Shimano chain length checking procedure using the new cassette. It’s very likely you’ll need a new chain. Look up park tool how to install a new chain on YT and he goes thru the procedure.
Depends on the derailleur: if there is a SS Model mounted? I doubt that if will work, but if you have GS derailleur it should work. My TCR came with the SS model and 52/36 with 11-30 cassette, that was the max for the SS version and that chainring combo did not work with an 11-34 cassette. Because the GS derailleur was cheaper then a new compact chainring set (50/34) I replaced the SS with the GS derailleur and put the 11-34 cassette on, works fine since 2 years by now. Of cause I had to replace the outworn chain with a new one that I broke up to the correct (longer) lenght.
Do you just junk the old parts you take off and replace or do they get recycled in some way , if possible ?
I’ll salvage things like thumb adjusters off derailleurs to reuse. And although on the surface I put the rest in a bin. The company I use for waste has a recycling centre where they sort the rubbish on a conveyor belt & are quite ethical in their approach so that works for me.

A generic stem uses six M5 bolts, typically with a torque spec between 5 and 6 Nm.
Different stems have different designs with different bolt sizes, so torque specs will vary from model to model.
Hi guys. Can I ask why you never drop the fork? I drop my fork every 3 months for Carbon steerer check and to add new grease. I find even after 3 months of dry riding the grease is caked full of grime.
We do a lot of work not always shown on camera simply because we are a commercial shop first and foremost and can only spend so long each week on each video, however if CZcams grows enough we might be able to bring longer more in-depth services! 🧡👍🏻⚙️

I ride a CX bike all year around, so I change nothing. I've added mudguards this year (previously ran little gravel stick on style ones) and they'll come off in spring. I keep my bike vaguely serviced all year around, but I probably would be best to give it a service at some point. Probably hit it all over the Christmas break. Certainly would be a good time to strip down my commuter (last really touched about 3 years ago, and it's had new brakes and wheels since)

Ive always wondered about how much you charge for a restoration like this or some of the worse ones on the channel. Seems like its a lot of work restoring some of these bikes so i was wanted to know the price of something like this?
Brought my bike in … with a new chain for a service … the mechanic said worn, every time I bring a bike in with any chain ,. It’s worn.
I have the park tool chain checker, like you use. They use a park tool but it’s a diff kind of chain checker.
They said shimano quality chains have gone down hill. And proceeded to say you need to spend 50 on a good chain.
In all your years of experience.. what’s you opinion, I’m pretty certain they’re lying and changing 30 to install a new chain on top of service. Either The chain check I have is wrong.. or all chains are sub standard . I suspect if I bough one of there chains .. came in the next day. It would be worn
Without doubt, Chains are one of the fastest wearing components on a bike and modern cyclists are doing mileage’s unimaginable only a few years ago. Indoor training is common place & chains haven’t developed the way groupsets and bikes themselves have. I’m sure upselling happens but equally I’m sure the majority of mechanics are honest people ultimately saving you money long term on a worn drive train by this advice.
As for quality I can only speak by what I see & even if chains haven’t changed much they are made in multimillion pound factories that have consistent quality control for the price point they are manufacturing too.
@@Bikespeeds I changed the chain 6 hours before bring it in for a service, it did 6 miles…. A shimano chain bought from decathalon.. I really don’t think this specific store is too honest. Every chain is suddenly old.
If there standards are so high, the basic chains they sell, must pass the chain checker test, but I reckon if I buy one and fit it.. it would fail too, if I got them to check it

@@fisharefriends598 Changing chains is very easy, you have a chain checker so do it yourself when its worn. I think you are being ripped off and need to find a new bike shop.
Using copper paste on a bike simply makes no sense at all... Steel bolts in aluminium parts with a carbon frame. Why would I introduce copper in this mix ??? Use grease, ceramic paste, loctite or whatever, but copper paste is just wrong
Anti-seize is a better barrier against galvanic corrosion.
