  • First rule you need to learn today is to approach every single corner thinking about the best possible exit ! STOP OVERDRIVING YOUR CAR
Most racers create wrong habits and brake too late or not enough !
With bad corner exit you lose gradually time till your next braking point !
I have example on this video and you can see , even little mistake on single corner can cost 0.3 sec and you may not even feel it !
if you drive Assetto Corsa Competizione , Automobilista 2 , iRacing , rFactor 2 , Dirt Rally , RaceRoom , the rules are the same ! DO NOT OVERDRIVE THE CAR !
In this video I use ACC , AMS2 and iRacing on Nurburgring and other racing tracks with the Mercedes AMG GT3 , Lamborghini Huracan GT3 , BMW M4 GT4 and Subaru WRX STI Rally Cross !

Great video dude. I've been off and on simracing for the last 10 years. I started sim racing after winning a G27 in a GT5P 3 lap time trial event at a local electronics store i just randomly visited that day. Thought about selling it for a second but when i tried the wheel some more at home i just got addicted to racing. Raced so much with that wheel that i burned trough the motors in less then 2 years and got another free replacement wheel under warranty, so basically i got 2 free G27's lol.
Winning that contest started this hobby for me. And i'll try to explain my speed evolution and how i improved from there on as a total noob with maybe just a little natural speed to actually setting a record and multiple top 10 laps on GT Sport.
When i just started out i only knew the very basics of racing, like i knew generally what lines to take trough a corner but not much more than that. I was like 4-5 seconds of the pace compared to the fast laps after practice on a perticular track.
And that kinda bothered me, i thought i was pretty good, i won that wheel after all didn't i ? I'd watch the fast lap replays and to me it looked mostly the same as my own laps. I didn't understand, but i wanted to understand.
And so i started learning about driving fast. Reading and watching everything i could find about going faster and the dynamics of driving a car on the limit. I learned the point your making in this video how the exits are so important especially if they are followed by straights. But also how braking is one of the most important things. I learned how to apply the brakes properly, what trailbraking is. I learned about how the weight of the car shifts around and how that effects the balance and grip of the car trough a corner. I tried to learn as much as i could. As i learned about all such things and started to try to implement that knowledge in my driving i really started to see some gains. Now after practice i would be like 3 seconds of the fast lap pace.
Improvements but i still wasnt there yet. Putting the theory in practice took time, it's one thing to read or watch video's about how a car behaves trough a corner and what to do to go fast but to actually feel the car behave yourself and actuallly go fast is something else. It takes practice.
With my new found knowledge and speed i started getting more into online multyplayer races. And with that also came more practice. Soon i would be around 2 seconds of the very fastest. I started winning public lobbys and doing well in local leagues and just kept growing experience racing.
I got into the more competitive online racing. With rankings and leaderboards filled with very fast players. First with GT Acadamy time trials and iracing. I would get around top 350-250 and one time a top 100 in GT Acadamy with loads of laps and started off good in iracing climbing the first ranks pretty fast. After some time on iracing i kept improving and got at around 1.5 second of the fastest if i practiced much. But from there on i hit another wall. I got into the higher ranked lobby's and i wasnt doing bad but i also wasnt winnig races.
That last 1.5 second is actually the hardest to gain and it took the longest. It takes perfection. And what makes perfection ? Thats right, practice ! And experience ! Loads of it actually. At this point its not so much about learning new techniques to gain more time, sure there is always stuff to learn but at his point it is mostly about perfecting everything you learned and experienced over the years and trough practice end up being able to put it all together in one lap or race.
I was starting to get there when GT Sport came out. And then i really got into that game. I was putting allot of hours in it and climbed to the highest rank fast. I was racing the best on that game and usually fighting for the win. I had to at one point. The driver rating cap on that game sits on 75.000 points. To get there you basically need to win or be on the podium every race, finishing last would set you back days of progress. I got to a driver rating of 72700. I was qualifying in the top 100 top 50 regulary and sometimes even getting on the top 10 stars leaderboard. One time i even managed to set the fastest lap record on a daily race qualifying on Monza out of 17 thousand players !
That was basically my evolution of speed. When you read it like this you may think its gonna take years of grinding and in a way it is but remember like i said its been a on or off thing for me, there where times where i raced more often and there where times where i didnt race at all, its just a hobby but one i always come back to. There's just something about this virtual racing. When your in a race long battle or set a really good lap it can really get the blood flowing.
Nowadays i mainly just drive ACC for fun every now and then. But driving the sim has become like second nature to me now. Even if i havent raced for weeks or longer i can just hop on and do a couple of laps and be within 1.5-1 of the really fast guys ready to race.
Sorry if i went a bit on a rant here lol. I am just passionate about our hobby. Maybe someone who whas like me, 4 seconds of the pace not understanding why, will read this and maybe it will help them. I dont know lol cheers.
Tldr: Knowledge, implementing that knowledge trough practice, perfection through more practice.
BTW I love your setup man looks so good.

Great advice and sacrificing exit-speed while going too fast into corners was a mistake that took years to fix for me. I started with AC in 2015 and switched to other titles around 2017. Now I can beat my PBs in AC easily without pushing. There are a few simple rules from Walter Röhrl that helped me:
    1. The entry should mostly be the slowest part of a corner.
    2. Tyres are most efficient while braking/accelerating as straight as possible or carrying speed through corners
    3. The biggest secret of driving fast is steering as little as needed.

I usually brake a bit early because I can’t do it later consistently so the only thing I need to do is to maximize exit. I actually noticed I wasn’t applying throttle as soon as possible but a bit later. So if the car is not at the limit there is no reason not to apply throttle even before the apex. Another thing is that a slight throttle doesn’t mean acceleration but it can mean maintaining the speed because otherwise it will brake. Another thing I noticed is you need to be careful not to keep it under-reved during braking for two reasons: one, because when you apply throttle you will not have the best wheel torque potential and secondly because downshift brakes help trail braking more compared with when you are under-rev.
Trying to keept the best racing line is also very important
Also find the brake pressure that brings the best grip
Another thing I didn’t try is to use all the width of the track I mean going close to walls or side of the road, but it feels very risky.
With these I managed to go within 2” in prequalifying laps in my championship but I still need to improve some things to go faster. On some corners I run similarly to the best drivers in the local championship but there are corners where I lose time. Also the car setup is not fixed and I have no idea how good they are, I usually take a standard setup but I had a vrs for a race and didn’t notice any difference.

Learn to use all the track! For some tracks it's absolutely critical for being able to go wide enough to turn in with speed and get on the power early for that smooth and fast exit. Bathurst for example is impossible without using all the track.

    • @ivanmunoz9055
      @ivanmunoz9055 Před 3 lety +1

For me is the exact opposite, i actually brake a bit late. I'm a pretty agressive driver in my drivestile, i don't simrace online so I don't know exactly how good I am, what i know is that I'm much better at overtaking than at having pace. I'm a slow driver who is good at overtaking and even better at defending his position, but sometimes has problems being consistent and not making mistakes or managing tyre wear.
Also, a bit off topic, many times I race with the racing line on, not because I don't know racing lines but because there are tracks that I don't know and the racing line helps me know what is coming next turn, i don't even always follow the racing line as I know that depending on the car different lines will be faster.

There's nothing worse than chasing lost time or a lost position for your race. I've ended a few races simply because I lost my cool and cracked under the pressure after making one mistake and trying to make it back. Eventually the mistakes compound until you ruin your own and maybe someones elses race. Best to let it be and keep looking forward, but most importantly just BREATHE. Breathing exercises have really helped my racing and composure. Brilliant video mate, as Jim would say "Apexes and exits".

Thanks man. After watching the video I changed my driving habits and focus more on exiting fast than on entering a corner a fast as possible. This resulted in a major breakthrough for me with Grand Prix Legends, which I use since 1999. My personal best at Monza was 0,181 above the GPLRank benchmark since May 2002 (!!) and at Watkins Glen it was 0,005 (!!!) above the benchmark since June 2003, 18 years ago. For 3 weeks I focus more on faster exits and I managed to beat my 19 (!!) and 18 (!!) year old personal best times at Monza and Watkins Glen with a few tenths of a second, going negative on both tracks. Your remark about failure and stress are so recognisable. It happened to me all the time and when frustration kicked in I could not drive one decent lap. I can get top 600 times in forza 6 multiplayer lobbies pretty much any track or class but to get in top 50 is so hard. I know for me I really get down on myself when im learning a new track I compare my best lap of the first day learning the track to a pro and see im 3 seconds off and i just give up. always remember everyone else was in your position everyone had to learn a new track dont quit! Keep doing lap after lap! Its simple if you want to be a high level sim/real driver you HAVE to turn laps and practice . Dont just hop in a public lobby and race others after 1 hour of learning a track you will lose everytime.

4:14 this point reminds me of the first few times playing blackjack at the casinos when I turned 21. I was a young soldier who was brash and foolish like most young men. I would place the minimum bet of 5$ and if I lost a few hands I would attempt to recover lost bets by placing higher bets like 20-50$ then I would lose those bets and my night would end early.
I eventually stopped going and took the time to learn proper techniques and eventually through experience I learned to be patient and wait for appropriate opportunities to double down, like when you are dealt 11 for instance.
This change in strategy ensured I always left the room a winner, even if I didn't win much money I never left with less money than I could afford to spend that weekend and always stayed the entire night enjoying free drinks with good friends in a fun atmosphere.
Looking around the room at all the sweaty trihard gamblers who were stressing out from losing their homes or worse from gambling, I could have peace of mind and enjoy myself.
So yeah. Stay calm and stop trying to take but what is gone. Great advice, sir.

Fantastic mind-set, definitely some really really strong fundamental concepts that I haven't really thought about to implement in trying to become better, pushing my skill further. Especially being more methodical about the corner exit game (which I currently struggle with). Haven't thought about slowing down on entry to really focus on exit - it's seem so obvious when you speak about it this way. But when I think about it I have had such an "all or nothing" mind-set - the lap times must go down. But when I relate to your key points it's not really because I have "understood" what I have done, it's more like I pushed and got lucky on the 100th attempt, instead of focusing on bettering specific skills that consistently would help me improve lap time overall. Really like the concept of letting overall performance dipping while you hone specific skills!

He said that to be fast the entry speed isn't the most important one and that braking early is a good thing as it will make for faster exits. But he also explained that that was for pace or just driving around the track and while racing different lines and strategies where used, he explained that braking late while slower was useful for overtaking or defending.

Hey Tim , thank you buddy for the beautiful comment! There is lot more to come to put the entire puzzle together but first rule is very important! Every time we see faster lap time we instantly start overdrive the car because of the pressure we feel and we usually start with late braking which lead to bad exit of the corner and you may lose on early braking a bit but you can lose so much more going out of the corner! It is not change you can make in single day but the biggest change start in our head 💪

Really enjoying your videos, better for the thinking man, than simply watching you tubers race. I’ve started racing on iRacing less per week, being more in tune with when I’m in the right state of mind. Porsche Cup cars at Oran Park this week, and only raced twice. Question on relative bar/delta. I’m never sure how to set it up in practice/qualifying and the race. Currently best lap time for P/Q and Session best in R. Wondering about this and when/where to use “optimal”. And sector vs lap. Generally confused... ;)

Thank you Marcus ❤️ that is we good question about the bar buddy! I reset the optimal times before the practice session and try to create my new optimal in the practice session to make sure is correct with all those weather changes and I use the hat optimal for my Q ! In the race I just turn to session optimal and control my pace with it while the race process and tires wearing off ! I found this way very useful for me !

I’m 2 seconds off the best in the world on one of the games I play, I have noticed every time I upgrade to better equipment I pick up some time like I went from a potentiometer brake to a load cell brake *( Fanatec V3’s with performance kit if you don’t have the performance kit and you have V3’s I recommend getting it it makes a world of difference from the way you get them )* that’s picked me up 1.5 secs per lap on average and my pace has gotten super consistent in a 30 lap race all the lap will be within 1 second of each other if I stay on the same compound and my trail braking has massively improved being almost no travel in the brake and using it with muscle memory instead of a certain position it’s so much easier

When i drive, I usually try to maximize my entry speed because it feels the fastest in my head, but when I tried to sacrifice my entry for a better exit, I gained so much time on certain corners because of a long straight ahead. I had an endurance race at mugello a few months ago and it helped to do this on the last corner :D. Anyways amazing video and I hope to see more of these tips/tricks in the future. Stay safe Bro

That is the big problem bro and we all fall in this trap! Because we are in rush and want to drive fast and the braking part of any corner comes first we all want to go as fast as we can and then try to take whatever we can from the exact 😃 it is just so easy trap particularly for new drivers 🤭
