My marriage ended this year because my wife got pulled into the sexual side of VR and now she's addicted and lives in it. I'm still trying to make sense of it all, this explained a lot but everytime I even see VRChat material I get a wave of emotion. It's so wild to read stories like this, I've played around 350 hours of this game and I obviously noticed a lot of people playing it have some mental issues but people throwing their whole life away on something that is barely real is insane to me.
Hearing the first kid talk about his depression and that vr chat has caused it, makes me think about my 13 year old brother. I would show my mom this because she got him a quest, but i dont want her to get the wrong idea about what he could be doing in this game.
Well, that's the thing. The interview with the pink haired avatar explained that some of her **first social experiences** in vrchat was drug distribution. In my opinion, whether it's your brother or anyone else, there is a decently good chance that you will encounter these type of people/adult situations in vrchat eventually because that's just the culture. So anyone blindly exploring vrchat, let alone a minor, needs to be seriously cautioned. Not telling you what to do btw, just sharing what I learned from the vid. And from my own experiences with vrchat.
Sit down and have a serious talk with your brother and give him a disclaimer. Unfortunately, he needs to know the dangers and the long lasting effects in order for them to avoid such dangers or to report or simply avoid/reject them. A kid should be able to explore such wonders, but the problem is not monitoring what they are playing, who they’re talking to, and how much they used such technology.

Here’s the thing, I bet that they don’t even know how to do anything harmful outside of VR chat. It’s not hard to hurt people, it’s hard to get away with it. I also agree it’s pathetic. I can tell you really love making videos by how much work you've put into this from start to finish. I also love making videos and this was very nice to watch! @@strwbelo i dont think anyone that plays the game would consider this the culture tbf. theyre fringe groups of freaks, if this was the main culture of vrchat everyone that didnt play the game wouldve known about them already. started playing the game when i was a minor, everyone i met was fine, never had any freaks coming up to me and i didnt go looking for them. i was pretty clear to the people that i liked and hung out with that i was a minor and they all treated me as such, they wouldn't talk to me about erping or anything. the vast majority of people are good just like any other community. not denying that the fringe groups exist or anything, they definitely do but theyre easily avoided in my experience, and if they stepped out into public worlds to try and get people theyd be reported and banned pretty quickly from the few times creeps and weirdos did come into sessions i was in. the people might be a bit weird, because well its vrchat, but most dont mean any harm, i started playing cuz im autistic and i figured itd be good to practise socializing. all in all over the hundreds of hours ive played the game over years and the groups ive been in, i think we've only ever had to deal with maybe 1 problematic person in 1 of the groups, less creeps than ive had to deal with irl suprisingly. even crashers are rare, ive only ever encountered less than 10 over the few years ive played the game
as a minor who plays in vrc with full body and an index, this actually made me understand how... strange it is. I personally try my 100% best to stay out of the weird stuff, but I don't know who I'm talking to. this is a great documentary.
I’m basically the same in everything you just described. What I do to stay safe is I usually only play for 1 - 3 hours before getting off as to not get addicted. As well as not joining any groups or anything. You can easily get in some pretty deep shit by doing that. This might be a little tangent but I used to use Discord when I was 13 but that very quickly made me depressed, so I stopped using it when I turned about 14 abandoning basically everyone I knew online, and somehow I felt very happy and free in life. I recommend staying away from or minimizing Discord until you know your mature enough to not be ruined by it. Very unsafe and can easily destroy the minds of young teens like me. But VRC is very fun and a good social experience when your just wandering around worlds talking and joking with people, but it’s very helpful to know when to turn the game off.
If you stick to the games and more “normal” servers you will be relatively at low risk of NSFW people. But also try using a meme avatar generally will steer people more towards meming and chilling. I stopped playing VRChat due to the creeps and just stick to other VR stuff like racing sims and Pavlov.
One recommendation when interacting with any stranger: Overconfidence is a red flag. Most people don't know who you are, and are just as careful about you as you are about them. If someone shows way too much confidence wanting to tell you to do things or bring you to places, stay away. The worst people know that they are worse than you. That's why they are overconfident.

Exactly, this is why fantasy isnt enough for them, they want the "real" thing and get closer and closer until it just happens. I would say the vr stage is the stage before they act out in real life. I found porn history on my ex boyfriends phone at the time of animals, like 3d stuff with dragons, dinosaurs and the death claws from fallout. I was so disgusted as he knew how much I loved animals. The day before he'd asked me what my favourite dinosaur was and he was searching for porn of that. I kicked him out of bed and made him confess, after 2 hours of lying and saying he was going to unalive, he told me it had started innocently. like cat ears on girls and such and went on from there. I nearly broke up with him until he told me he was going to get therapy and stop. He watched it in my house whilst I was asleep and a few months later his mother had told me he'd touched his dogs ding dong as a joke in front of them. I knew. So when he went to bed I sat them down, showed them the pictures I had taken of his search history, explained it was going to turn into real animals if they didn't get him help and left. Dude was a sicko.
Second Life started out 18 plus. There was a second life for teenagers that was completely separate and when a teenager arrived at the age of 18 there was even a celebration where they would have a virtual boat ride to graduate that person from the teenage servers to the adult servers. We did a lot of clever stuff in second life. Why none of it translated over to VR chat is beyond me. But it sure seems like VR chat is intended to focus on the manipulation of extremely impressionable young people. And those kids are toxic as hell. They say some of the most horrific crap ever thinking that they're edgy but it's stuff that would get them thrown in prison if they were just two years older. We're destroying the whole world from the brain out

That 13 yr old is incredibly brave, I'm 15 going onto 16 in november and went through similar things at their age except not caused by vrchat, it was caused by other social media. I love VR chat because I'm on the spectrum and things like facial expressions and body language don't really transfer to the vr characters. It's actually helped me learn how to interact more. Sadly I can only go for at max an hour. I'm EXTREMELY sensitive to FOV and the headsets don't give me a high enough FOV to keep me from physically getting sick.

Glad someone covered this. I couldn't handle being on the platform anymore because it genuinely just felt like a shit show of people who were just basically predatorial in every single aspect. I met a 12 year old who was very smart & kind. He was top of his class & taught me things I'd never learned about science as he went to a prestigious school for the rich kids. He's like 14 now? I hung around him specifically because I understood this game was his outlet & he's of Arab descent (so in essence strict rules). So I didn't want to tell him to simply just get off the game...because I knew he wouldn't. So I hung out with him simply to be guardian in his online ventures. The story of us meeting goes like so: We met in a public world & some guy was trying to get him to erp. The guy was convinced he was actually a teenage girl & kept calling him a slut & whipped out his nsfw avatar. I was showing my irl friend around the game that day & it surprised the hell out of her. We both stepped in while everyone else in the world just wanted to sexualize & attack this young boy. It's so fucking sad to know that this type of behaviour is normalized in VR. And it feels impossible to stop it. The worst part is....this boy's older sister played the game and she looked older for her age. The boy no longer plays the game or talks to me because his sister got into an incident with a 32 year old man from VRChat & the police got involved. I'm glad his parents found out. Although it was nice to be a motherly figure. It's better this way. But after all that. I couldn't sit up there & play on the platform. I've seen kids get brainwashed into thinking being around these sick bastards is totally ok. People are more disgusting on VRchat than they are kind. No other way to put it.
I’ve done the same as you on discord, because discord is just as dangerous of a place. I guess because I’m older and I know what’s on the Internet, when I run into people I find out are genuinely children, I feel the need to take them under my wing and guard them and protect them from all the harshness of the Internet. I assume that they have somewhat of a good reason to be hanging out on the Internet, that being their personal life being not that friendly of one, so they need an escape in other words. I’m just glad that of all of the teenagers these kids could’ve run into, they ran into me, and I know that might sound boastful but I mean it sincerely that I am just glad that at least per my knowledge they don’t have any connections with anyone dangerous. I guess I suppose I kind of figured that if I fully take them under my wing, they’re less likely going to be seeking out other people on discord and then unfortunately meeting a predator or something. If they know that I am a safe person to socialize with on discord, I guess I have some assurance that they are less likely going to be traumatized forever by some of the horrors of the Internet. I know I myself have been affected by many of the horrors of the Internet and I’m about eight years older than these kids, so I can only imagine how much more it would affect them. That’s why I kind of wanna bring them under my wing, to protect them, because no one was capable of doing that for me, and there’s no assurance that they’re going to run into anybody else who could be able to do that appropriately. So yeah I can totally understand where you’re coming from and why you would do that. I guess I have some assurance that there are other teenagers and young adults that try to protect the innocent children that venture online. You are right, we cannot stop them from doing so, and again they might have an understandable reason for it, they might have a horrible life otherwise, and in a way they have more of a chance to live a slightly happier life if they go on the World Wide Web, where there’s literally billions of people on it every single day, instead of maybe they constricted 20 or 30 people they have a chance to interact with in real life. How I met this one kid, who was about 11 no I think? Ever since then, I started inviting him to my Minecraft server, and he started inviting his friends but then apparently his friends were a bit sketchy, and I remember us talking about it and I’m glad I was there to back him up on all of that. One of them kept saying weird sexual stuff and also racial slurs, and the weird thing was, this kid was an IRL friend who was his age and from his grade. I feel bad for that one kid for being so affected by the Internet, I mean I don’t know where else he would’ve learned that stuff. I think in general though, the Internet should not be accessible to children, once they’re already on there the best you could do is be a parental guide for them, but I know at least for me I found myself getting caught up with trying to take so many of these poor, poor souls under my wing, that it started to drain my own emotional energy, because also I had to deal with toxic people on there as well. Even those older and more mature than them, it was still a lot for me, so I’m not on discord that much anymore to socialize with anyone else besides my IRL friends. I’ll probably never try VR, it also makes me nauseous too. I also don’t need to be any further traumatized by what the Internet has to offer, I only got to learn the full extent thanks to quarantine

I have gotten extremely lucky with the people I've met though so I'm thankful for that but I introduced myself to the internet at around 11-12 and have made 2-3 mistakes that could've led down a rabbit hole. I wish I could hold that amount of responsibility to keep others from falling into traps and so called "taking them under my wing", It's just so mentally tasking and really takes a toll on your life knowing the responsibility you have for this specific person and if you mess it up you could leave them and yourself harmed.
The is indeed a lot of people who do fucked up stuff to put it lightly in vrchat, but I dont think is the case for everyone, I dont think its even the case for the vast majority of players. As someone who was basically saved by this game wich I undoubtably love, it pains me to just see people put such bad light to the game saying it only contains bad thingsl, I've met a lot of wonderfull people in the game, and most likely, if you you o to someone random they'll be nice aswell, and of course the is bad encounter with others that are sick in the head but its not the majority. I may sound like some nerd who is just addicted to a game, and you might not be that far away from the truth, but I think the main problem is seeing vrchat as a game, how vrchat is set up is more like a social platform, and add vr to that and you basically have the colosest imitation of how it is irl. I remember playing VRChat when it first came out, before they even had blocking features, chat levels and such. It was very wholesome and new, did have some odd people, but man it really grew a dark underbelly right under my nose. For most, they will never experience this side of it at all. I don't play it much anymore though, too busy for the time being.
@@chairforce664 Yeah, I can say I never went this deep into it, and most people won't either. When the void nightclub was first updated to add private rooms, I started seeing the possibility of those things happening and even chanced upon them when I'd fool around and try to break/noclip into the rooms to party crash, but I dipped out immediately if I ever thought something was really awkward or weird. To get to the depths the video is describing you really do have to treat the game as a second life and become heavily addicted into joining the inner facets of niche VR groups.

@@BrandonFM I was on vrchat for two years the same time Covid was I was so depressed and it was amazing but god I have done a lot of stuff I kinda regret being more angry for one cause I still saw it as a game I could put all my negative emotions in so I was pretty shitty and once I stopped doin that all the people around me noticed I got closer to them then I noticed that they were actually pretty bad people because of a lot of reasons I had a lot more anxiety because of that cause I was scared that if I left the friend group they would be extremely wrathful to the people who tryed to leave and the ones in it well lust it was scary cause the friend group was made out of people with only phantom sense I loved it we did alotta stuff but I realized that what I was doin pretty much replacing my real life with my fake life well it was unhealthy so I stopped playing vr got myself a amazing girlfriend focused on my real life and now I’m a lot better my depression got a lot worse at the start but started gettin better still tryin to get better but hey that’s how life is you get stuck In dents but hey that’s just the summary of what happened I’m pretty happy I never did somethin like that one girl in team beneficial and say rawr and shite like god how low do you wanna go like sex fine but cat girl role play nadda Now I’m pretty happy that I never really went to clubs much cause that slave and vote room shite jesus

As someone who has came across these "VR-Mommy" type of pairings multiple times, it always unsettled me. Now I have a good reason to feel unsettled. Though this video won't stop me from fucking around on VRChat with/without my pals in Discord, its definitely shown me that I shouldn't let this become an obsession and that I should stay wise. So, thank you for making myself and many others aware of the dangers this platform can bring and thank you for giving us a reason to be cautious.

Speaking as someone who's spent almost a year in serious vrchat communities (not the kind covered in this video, a totally different rabbit hole not even mentioned here), I have put a whole lot of thought into this kind of stuff. The conclusion I've reached is that I can't say that vrchat is responsible for these things existing. Part of the game's core is its openness to community driven content creation with worlds and avatars, and as long as that exists people will always use it for heinous, dark stuff. With that said, I can fault vrchat for the 13+ rating. The devs should be aware that the dark side of vrchat is an inevitability of the platform and the steps they've taken to stop kids interracting with that are, well, nonexistent. However, it is also worth mentioning that the same aspects of the platform that give rise to slave rings and sex dens also allow the creation of some truly wonderful and uplifting things. Helping hands, the sign language education group, Metacosm studios, a film-making and documentary group, to name a few. I would even humbly submit my own group, the BAF as one of the good ones. I think the best analogy I can give is that vrchat is a city with a real, thriving society living within it. Sure, there's the dark underbelly with sex, drugs, and crime, but there's also the other side: schools, hospitals, museums, charities, and so much more good. Of course, no parent should willingly let their child wander care-free through any city on the planet, and vrchat is no different.
It sucks because the parents not likely to care are also probably the cause of why their kids are looking for those communities. Child neglect even can cause searching for these things, leaving your kid on the computer or games all day and not making them go out or socialize somehow, hanging out with them yourself, etc. Those kids are more vulnerable in general because predators are looking for kids with low self esteem/no support network.
25:56 As someone who's made a discord sex server, this is basically the exact thing I was trying to avoid by implementing verification. The fact they left those channels unlocked is super concerning. The whole point of age verification is to prevent predatory behavior. I even locked the verified people out of the non-verified areas as well to completely prevent interaction between them.

I saw that there was demand in some of the servers I was in for something like that, and I knew someone would eventually make one, but that if I was that person I could know that it was done with careful consideration of the effects the server could have on its users. I wouldn’t be surprised at this point if there’s private VR chat rooms out there where people are planning the things you mentioned. It’s mostly unregulated and doesn’t leave proof behind like using a text chat room. I’m sure federal agencies are at least aware of this so we could have some officers/detectives going undercover in VR chat of all things in the future.

I used to play DND with Lys around 1 and a half years ago and he would often talk about what he was doing in his VRChat club, crazy to see a whole section on just him and what he was doing. Really happy to see someone crack down on this because he would often say that he was going to "be with his pups" or something of that nature after the session was over, on top of that some of the things he would try to do in the dnd sessions were quite horrifying. From trying to defile a dead body to having sexual intercourse with a npc who was underage and the DM even said that they were underage. He would always respond with "Oh its fine its the medieval century they did this." He also was very persistent in trying to "grow his harem" which basically meant he was trying to get more slaves for sex. Keep in mind this was in Dungeons and Dragon, a game about magic and sword fighting and he managed to make it about his weird sexual fantasies. Its funny too because we still talk about the crazy shit he did to this day and have screenshots of all the crazy shit he wrote in the discord server. He's not right in the head and it shows.
I also have heard the DnD stories of Lysmatic Studios from the D.M and other players that used to play with him. It is weird to think that a segment was dedicated to a man that I loosely knew from other friends. All that I know really, is that Lys was doing a lot of stuff both with his friends behind closed doors and behind the scenes in his clubs. But it is kinda funny to recall how I was in the session, as a player, in which his character got executed in front of a town square for his crimes against humanity. Good video tho
I've played VRC for a couple years at this point, and I've seen tons of creepy shit going on. A lot of people turn a blind eye to it, myself included sometimes, so it's nice to see someone exposing these creeps. I personally think it's amazing, the social aspects of VR etc. But the creepy shit needs to stop, and the amount of kids that play into it all needs to stop also.
I think these VR social spaces really need some form of better verification at least. But it's hard without going to the route of actually using real ID for verification purposes. But I guess that's the only way? And making it as a paid game so at least it will deter most that just download on their machines not knowing by the parents. Though it doesn't help if the parents will still buy it and not knowing it's not meant for kids at all.
Honestly, I would just like to see something like an age verification system run by the VRC team, then have the option to create worlds for only 18+ or 21+ Would solve pretty much all the problems, not to mention it would be nice to not be a free baby sitter for random 6 year olds who really need some more attentive parents.
@@ithraldharzul6887 Yeah at the end of the day, sadly it is due to bad parenting. It is a concern to the society how these kids will turn out when they grow up. Back to VR, I guess government should make game developers with social media aspects like VR Chat to really have a team for age verification and making sure underage kids must not be allowed to the platform, or at least filter them out from the adults. We need this especially if we are leading to meta verse system in the near future. This should fall under child protection law.

As someone who has been groomed, this is a great documentary bringing awareness to what happens on the web. BUT no matter what the rating it will ALWAYS boil down to the parents taking care of their children. Don’t hate the player hate the game.
I think a lot of the users when they start out on VR Chat gradually instill the belief that their digital footprints can never be traced back to them, giving that sense of freedom just like any other social media platform would. And the longer they play, the more unsettling their acts become.
I just found this channel today and watched all 3 videos. I think the scariest part of all of them is how most of what was covered in the videos is normalized in that community
as someone who casually plays vrchat every here and there with friends for shits and giggles, this points out really well how horrifying the game can really be, the visual and auditory effects in this video really help to give that effect of "this is bad, this is probably illegal, don't do this, have caution", VERY well done.
as much as I advocate for children's right to privacy, it is so vital that parents supervise their kids internet, ESPECIALLY social media, up until they are mature enough to understand just how dangerous talking to strangers online can be.
i'm someone who firmly believes in the 'it's vr, do what you wanna do', but some of these people take that idea and fucking run with it. makes me glad i keep an eye on the younger members of my friends list. we stay in black cats and other surface level worlds to party, so we don't run into people like lys. other than the occasional racist it's pretty sfw, and i'd suggest to anyone younger than 18 to try and avoid going to the club or private area worlds because they are extremely creepy. ofc i'm just a fullbody drinker, so take my opinion with a grain of salt. hope everyone stays safe, and still can have fun.

I am 15 and I know That not everyone is friendly, especially online, where you can't see who they are. There hiding behind a screen while Doing things not a single person should do. I can't express enough how fantastic of a job you did. The whole three part series was a logical thinkers wet dream. I have been playing over 1,000 hours on vrchat and see it as what it is, a social platform. Most people I have interacted with and I mean MOST treat it like a game though in reality it's a social platform with games IN it. I have seen some sketchy crowds and experienced some pretty uncomfortable situations during my time there. Morals go out the window when peer pressure and example leads one to believe that what is taking place is normal while in the real world would be seen as the exact opposite. One of my favorite vr chat creator is azeal because he gets interesting people and has a sort-of fireside chat with them. He has bounty hunters, war survivors, etc.
This just shows how Terrifying the Internet can be its nothing too toy with.. I Feel bad cause i used to play VRC and it got me into a horrible headspace.. VRC is in my words is one of the scariest places in the Virtual World.

My marriage ended this year because my wife got pulled into the sexual side of VR and now she's addicted and lives in it. I'm still trying to make sense of it all, this explained a lot but everytime I even see VRChat material I get a wave of emotion. Well, that's the thing. The interview with the pink haired avatar explained that some of her **first social experiences** in vrchat was drug distribution. In my opinion, whether it's your brother or anyone else, there is a decently good chance that you will encounter these type of people/adult situations in vrchat eventually because that's just the culture. So anyone blindly exploring vrchat, let alone a minor, needs to be seriously cautioned. Not telling you what to do btw, just sharing what I learned from the vid. And from my own experiences with vrchat.

I can tell you really love making videos by how much work you've put into this from start to finish. I also love making videos and this was very nice to watch! I love the editing and the creativity used mixed in with the message. Like the sections of the VR girl roaming around and all the shots mixed in at the music video at the end. @@strwbelo i dont think anyone that plays the game would consider this the culture tbf. theyre fringe groups of freaks, if this was the main culture of vrchat everyone that didnt play the game wouldve known about them already. started playing the game when i was a minor, everyone i met was fine, never had any freaks coming up to me and i didnt go looking for them. i was pretty clear to the people that i liked and hung out with that i was a minor and they all treated me as such, they wouldn't talk to me about erping or anything. the vast majority of people are good just like any other community. not denying that the fringe groups exist or anything, they definitely do but theyre easily avoided in my experience, and if they stepped out into public worlds to try and get people theyd be reported and banned pretty quickly from the few times creeps and weirdos did come into sessions i was in. the people might be a bit weird, because well its vrchat, but most dont mean any harm, i started playing cuz im autistic and i figured itd be good to practise socializing. all in all over the hundreds of hours ive played the game over years and the groups ive been in, i think we've only ever had to deal with maybe 1 problematic person in 1 of the groups, less creeps than ive had to deal with irl suprisingly. even crashers are rare, ive only ever encountered less than 10 over the few years ive played the game
as a minor who plays in vrc with full body and an index, this actually made me understand how... strange it is. I personally try my 100% best to stay out of the weird stuff, but I don't know who I'm talking to. this is a great documentary.

I’m basically the same in everything you just described. What I do to stay safe is I usually only play for 1 - 3 hours before getting off as to not get addicted. As well as not joining any groups or anything. You can easily get in some pretty deep shit by doing that. This might be a little tangent but I used to use Discord when I was 13 but that very quickly made me depressed, so I stopped using it when I turned about 14 abandoning basically everyone I knew online, and somehow I felt very happy and free in life. I recommend staying away from or minimizing Discord until you know your mature enough to not be ruined by it. Very unsafe and can easily destroy the minds of young teens like me. But VRC is very fun and a good social experience when your just wandering around worlds talking and joking with people, but it’s very helpful to know when to turn the game off.
If you stick to the games and more “normal” servers you will be relatively at low risk of NSFW people. But also try using a meme avatar generally will steer people more towards meming and chilling. I stopped playing VRChat due to the creeps and just stick to other VR stuff like racing sims and Pavlov.
One recommendation when interacting with any stranger: Overconfidence is a red flag. Most people don't know who you are, and are just as careful about you as you are about them. If someone shows way too much confidence wanting to tell you to do things or bring you to places, stay away. The worst people know that they are worse than you. That's why they are overconfident.

I found porn history on my ex boyfriends phone at the time of animals, like 3d stuff with dragons, dinosaurs and the death claws from fallout. I was so disgusted as he knew how much I loved animals. The day before he'd asked me what my favourite dinosaur was and he was searching for porn of that. I kicked him out of bed and made him confess, after 2 hours of lying and saying he was going to unalive, he told me it had started innocently. like cat ears on girls and such and went on from there. I nearly broke up with him until he told me he was going to get therapy and stop. He watched it in my house whilst I was asleep and a few months later his mother had told me he'd touched his dogs ding dong as a joke in front of them. I knew. So when he went to bed I sat them down, showed them the pictures I had taken of his search history, explained it was going to turn into real animals if they didn't get him help and left. Dude was a sicko.

Second Life started out 18 plus. There was a second life for teenagers that was completely separate and when a teenager arrived at the age of 18 there was even a celebration where they would have a virtual boat ride to graduate that person from the teenage servers to the adult servers. We did a lot of clever stuff in second life. Why none of it translated over to VR chat is beyond me. But it sure seems like VR chat is intended to focus on the manipulation of extremely impressionable young people. And those kids are toxic as hell. They say some of the most horrific crap ever thinking that they're edgy but it's stuff that would get them thrown in prison if they were just two years older. We're destroying the whole world from the brain out

That 13 yr old is incredibly brave, I'm 15 going onto 16 in november and went through similar things at their age except not caused by vrchat, it was caused by other social media. I love VR chat because I'm on the spectrum and things like facial expressions and body language don't really transfer to the vr characters. It's actually helped me learn how to interact more. Sadly I can only go for at max an hour. I'm EXTREMELY sensitive to FOV and the headsets don't give me a high enough FOV to keep me from physically getting sick.

Glad someone covered this. I couldn't handle being on the platform anymore because it genuinely just felt like a shit show of people who were just basically predatorial in every single aspect. I met a 12 year old who was very smart & kind. He was top of his class & taught me things I'd never learned about science as he went to a prestigious school for the rich kids. He's like 14 now? I hung around him specifically because I understood this game was his outlet & he's of Arab descent (so in essence strict rules). So I didn't want to tell him to simply just get off the game...because I knew he wouldn't. So I hung out with him simply to be guardian in his online ventures.
The story of us meeting goes like so: We met in a public world & some guy was trying to get him to erp. The guy was convinced he was actually a teenage girl & kept calling him a slut & whipped out his nsfw avatar. I was showing my irl friend around the game that day & it surprised the hell out of her. We both stepped in while everyone else in the world just wanted to sexualize & attack this young boy.
It's so fucking sad to know that this type of behaviour is normalized in VR. And it feels impossible to stop it. The worst part is....this boy's older sister played the game and she looked older for her age. The boy no longer plays the game or talks to me because his sister got into an incident with a 32 year old man from VRChat & the police got involved. I'm glad his parents found out. Although it was nice to be a motherly figure. It's better this way. But after all that. I couldn't sit up there & play on the platform. I've seen kids get brainwashed into thinking being around these sick bastards is totally ok. People are more disgusting on VRchat than they are kind.

I’ve done the same as you on discord, because discord is just as dangerous of a place. I guess because I’m older and I know what’s on the Internet, when I run into people I find out are genuinely children, I feel the need to take them under my wing and guard them and protect them from all the harshness of the Internet. I assume that they have somewhat of a good reason to be hanging out on the Internet, that being their personal life being not that friendly of one, so they need an escape in other words. I’m just glad that of all of the teenagers these kids could’ve run into, they ran into me, and I know that might sound boastful but I mean it sincerely that I am just glad that at least per my knowledge they don’t have any connections with anyone dangerous. I guess I suppose I kind of figured that if I fully take them under my wing, they’re less likely going to be seeking out other people on discord and then unfortunately meeting a predator or something. If they know that I am a safe person to socialize with on discord, I guess I have some assurance that they are less likely going to be traumatized forever by some of the horrors of the Internet. I know I myself have been affected by many of the horrors of the Internet and I’m about eight years older than these kids, so I can only imagine how much more it would affect them. That’s why I kind of wanna bring them under my wing, to protect them, because no one was capable of doing that for me, and there’s no assurance that they’re going to run into anybody else who could be able to do that appropriately.
So yeah I can totally understand where you’re coming from and why you would do that. I guess I have some assurance that there are other teenagers and young adults that try to protect the innocent children that venture online. You are right, we cannot stop them from doing so, and again they might have an understandable reason for it, they might have a horrible life otherwise, and in a way they have more of a chance to live a slightly happier life if they go on the World Wide Web, where there’s literally billions of people on it every single day, instead of maybe they constricted 20 or 30 people they have a chance to interact with in real life.
By the way really sorry about what happened and what you had to see. I suppose VR chat is much worse than discord in many ways, before I didn’t read your full comment I just saw that you also were a person that took a child under your wing because you knew it was the best thing you can do for them.
How I met this one kid, who was about 11 no I think? He basically just messaged me at random and I knew he was for sure what he said he was because Adults don’t say” hi do you wanna be my friend?” That’s something stereotypical your child says. Ever since then, I started inviting him to my Minecraft server, and he started inviting his friends but then apparently his friends were a bit sketchy, and I remember us talking about it and I’m glad I was there to back him up on all of that. One of them kept saying weird sexual stuff and also racial slurs, and the weird thing was, this kid was an IRL friend who was his age and from his grade. I feel bad for that one kid for being so affected by the Internet, I mean I don’t know where else he would’ve learned that stuff.
I think in general though, the Internet should not be accessible to children, once they’re already on there the best you could do is be a parental guide for them, but I know at least for me I found myself getting caught up with trying to take so many of these poor, poor souls under my wing, that it started to drain my own emotional energy, because also I had to deal with toxic people on there as well. Even those older and more mature than them, it was still a lot for me, so I’m not on discord that much anymore to socialize with anyone else besides my IRL friends. I’ll probably never try VR, it also makes me nauseous too. I also don’t need to be any further traumatized by what the Internet has to offer, I only got to learn the full extent thanks to quarantine

I have gotten extremely lucky with the people I've met though so I'm thankful for that but I introduced myself to the internet at around 11-12 and have made 2-3 mistakes that could've led down a rabbit hole. I wish I could hold that amount of responsibility to keep others from falling into traps and so called "taking them under my wing", It's just so mentally tasking and really takes a toll on your life knowing the responsibility you have for this specific person and if you mess it up you could leave them and yourself harmed.

As someone who was basically saved by this game wich I undoubtably love, it pains me to just see people put such bad light to the game saying it only contains bad thingsl, I've met a lot of wonderfull people in the game, and most likely, if you you o to someone random they'll be nice aswell, and of course the is bad encounter with others that are sick in the head but its not the majority. I may sound like some nerd who is just addicted to a game, and you might not be that far away from the truth, but I think the main problem is seeing vrchat as a game, how vrchat is set up is more like a social platform, and add vr to that and you basically have the colosest imitation of how it is irl. I remember playing VRChat when it first came out, before they even had blocking features, chat levels and such. It was very wholesome and new, did have some odd people, but man it really grew a dark underbelly right under my nose. For most, they will never experience this side of it at all. I don't play it much anymore though, too busy for the time being.

@@chairforce664 Yeah, I can say I never went this deep into it, and most people won't either. When the void nightclub was first updated to add private rooms, I started seeing the possibility of those things happening and even chanced upon them when I'd fool around and try to break/noclip into the rooms to party crash, but I dipped out immediately if I ever thought something was really awkward or weird. To get to the depths the video is describing you really do have to treat the game as a second life and become heavily addicted into joining the inner facets of niche VR groups.

@@BrandonFM I was on vrchat for two years the same time Covid was I was so depressed and it was amazing but god I have done a lot of stuff I kinda regret being more angry for one cause I still saw it as a game I could put all my negative emotions in so I was pretty shitty and once I stopped doin that all the people around me noticed I got closer to them then I noticed that they were actually pretty bad people because of a lot of reasons I had a lot more anxiety because of that cause I was scared that if I left the friend group they would be extremely wrathful to the people who tryed to leave and the ones in it well lust it was scary cause the friend group was made out of people with only phantom sense I loved it we did alotta stuff but I realized that what I was doin pretty much replacing my real life with my fake life well it was unhealthy so I stopped playing vr got myself a amazing girlfriend focused on my real life and now I’m a lot better my depression got a lot worse at the start but started gettin better still tryin to get better but hey that’s how life is you get stuck In dents but hey that’s just the summary of what happened

Dude im all new to this and its just mind blowing as a subject. But the way you edit work and everything is just so perfectly made. Im addicted at this point for these type of videos good insight on the dangers of all these hidden parts that not many know about
Speaking as someone who's spent almost a year in serious vrchat communities (not the kind covered in this video, a totally different rabbit hole not even mentioned here), I have put a whole lot of thought into this kind of stuff. The conclusion I've reached is that I can't say that vrchat is responsible for these things existing. Part of the game's core is its openness to community driven content creation with worlds and avatars, and as long as that exists people will always use it for heinous, dark stuff. With that said, I can fault vrchat for the 13+ rating. The devs should be aware that the dark side of vrchat is an inevitability of the platform and the steps they've taken to stop kids interracting with that are, well, nonexistent. However, it is also worth mentioning that the same aspects of the platform that give rise to slave rings and sex dens also allow the creation of some truly wonderful and uplifting things. Helping hands, the sign language education group, Metacosm studios, a film-making and documentary group, to name a few. I would even humbly submit my own group, the BAF as one of the good ones. I think the best analogy I can give is that vrchat is a city with a real, thriving society living within it. Sure, there's the dark underbelly with sex, drugs, and crime, but there's also the other side: schools, hospitals, museums, charities, and so much more good. Of course, no parent should willingly let their child wander care-free through any city on the planet, and vrchat is no different.

It sucks because the parents not likely to care are also probably the cause of why their kids are looking for those communities. Child neglect even can cause searching for these things, leaving your kid on the computer or games all day and not making them go out or socialize somehow, hanging out with them yourself, etc. Those kids are more vulnerable in general because predators are looking for kids with low self esteem/no support network.

25:56 As someone who's made a discord sex server, this is basically the exact thing I was trying to avoid by implementing verification. The fact they left those channels unlocked is super concerning. The whole point of age verification is to prevent predatory behavior. I even locked the verified people out of the non-verified areas as well to completely prevent interaction between them.

I saw that there was demand in some of the servers I was in for something like that, and I knew someone would eventually make one, but that if I was that person I could know that it was done with careful consideration of the effects the server could have on its users. I wouldn’t be surprised at this point if there’s private VR chat rooms out there where people are planning the things you mentioned. It’s mostly unregulated and doesn’t leave proof behind like using a text chat room. I’m sure federal agencies are at least aware of this so we could have some officers/detectives going undercover in VR chat of all things in the future.

I used to play DND with Lys around 1 and a half years ago and he would often talk about what he was doing in his VRChat club, crazy to see a whole section on just him and what he was doing. Really happy to see someone crack down on this because he would often say that he was going to "be with his pups" or something of that nature after the session was over, on top of that some of the things he would try to do in the dnd sessions were quite horrifying. From trying to defile a dead body to having sexual intercourse with a npc who was underage and the DM even said that they were underage. He would always respond with "Oh its fine its the medieval century they did this." He also was very persistent in trying to "grow his harem" which basically meant he was trying to get more slaves for sex. Keep in mind this was in Dungeons and Dragon, a game about magic and sword fighting and he managed to make it about his weird sexual fantasies. Its funny too because we still talk about the crazy shit he did to this day and have screenshots of all the crazy shit he wrote in the discord server. He's not right in the head and it shows.
I also have heard the DnD stories of Lysmatic Studios from the D.M and other players that used to play with him. It is weird to think that a segment was dedicated to a man that I loosely knew from other friends. All that I know really, is that Lys was doing a lot of stuff both with his friends behind closed doors and behind the scenes in his clubs. But it is kinda funny to recall how I was in the session, as a player, in which his character got executed in front of a town square for his crimes against humanity. Good video tho

I've played VRC for a couple years at this point, and I've seen tons of creepy shit going on. A lot of people turn a blind eye to it, myself included sometimes, so it's nice to see someone exposing these creeps. I personally think it's amazing, the social aspects of VR etc. But the creepy shit needs to stop, and the amount of kids that play into it all needs to stop also.

I think these VR social spaces really need some form of better verification at least. But it's hard without going to the route of actually using real ID for verification purposes. But I guess that's the only way? And making it as a paid game so at least it will deter most that just download on their machines not knowing by the parents. Though it doesn't help if the parents will still buy it and not knowing it's not meant for kids at all.
Honestly, I would just like to see something like an age verification system run by the VRC team, then have the option to create worlds for only 18+ or 21+ Would solve pretty much all the problems, not to mention it would be nice to not be a free baby sitter for random 6 year olds who really need some more attentive parents.

Back to VR, I guess government should make game developers with social media aspects like VR Chat to really have a team for age verification and making sure underage kids must not be allowed to the platform, or at least filter them out from the adults. We need this especially if we are leading to meta verse system in the near future. This should fall under child protection law.

I think a lot of the users when they start out on VR Chat gradually instill the belief that their digital footprints can never be traced back to them, giving that sense of freedom just like any other social media platform would. And the longer they play, the more unsettling their acts become.

as someone who casually plays vrchat every here and there with friends for shits and giggles, this points out really well how horrifying the game can really be, the visual and auditory effects in this video really help to give that effect of "this is bad, this is probably illegal, don't do this, have caution", VERY well done.

we stay in black cats and other surface level worlds to party, so we don't run into people like lys. other than the occasional racist it's pretty sfw, and i'd suggest to anyone younger than 18 to try and avoid going to the club or private area worlds because they are extremely creepy.

I am 15 and I know That not everyone is friendly, especially online, where you can't see who they are. There hiding behind a screen while Doing things not a single person should do. These video's Can teach People (Especially Kids under 18 like me) to Be careful. VRchat is Truly Real Life but More Dangerous, yet More Fun..

the story of the girl who had a guy fly cross CONTINENT to see her without her permission is what i’m afraid of the most. not just the showing up in person part, but just the idea of someone having my information is terrifying. i go online and talk to people to have a safe outlet where i can be myself since i can’t irl bc my identity wouldn’t be accepted and would ruin my life for people to know. the idea of anyone telling people in my life about that has terrified me for the entire time i have been online but i always convince myself nobody cares that much about me to do those things.

I can't express enough how fantastic of a job you did. The whole three part series was a logical thinkers wet dream. I have been playing over 1,000 hours on vrchat and see it as what it is, a social platform. Most people I have interacted with and I mean MOST treat it like a game though in reality it's a social platform with games IN it. I have seen some sketchy crowds and experienced some pretty uncomfortable situations during my time there. Morals go out the window when peer pressure and example leads one to believe that what is taking place is normal while in the real world would be seen as the exact opposite. Never seen anyone explain it better. Thank you so so much. Nothing but props for you be safe please. One of my favorite vr chat creator is azeal because he gets interesting people and has a sort-of fireside chat with them. He has bounty hunters, war survivors, etc.
This just shows how Terrifying the Internet can be its nothing too toy with.. I Feel bad cause i used to play VRC and it got me into a horrible headspace.. VRC is in my words is one of the scariest places in the Virtual World.
