- A bruit has a unique sound that you want to be familiar with as a nurse. The reason you want to be familiar with this sound is because you will be assessing for them during your head-to-toe nursing assessment. (Tip: The bell of the stethoscope is the best for assessing them.)
A bruit is a blowing, swooshing noise found in a vascular structure (ex: artery) that can arise for stenosis or partial obstruction of that vessel. In an abdominal assessment you will be listening at various points on the abdomen (femoral, renal, iliac, etc.). Plus, you will be listening for a bruit at the carotid arteries when doing a neck assessment. If a bruit is present at the carotid artery it could indicate a warning sign of a stroke. Always document and/or report a bruit if noted and necessary.

I love that bruit in the carotid can be a sign of stroke… I never learned that and I can see how that’s an important assessment to do, yet I imagine that most people don’t do it.
Big part of assessing a head and neck cancer patient, especially after radiation therapy. The trick I was taught was tell the patient to take a deep breath and hold it, then listen with no breath sounds while listening to the neck. Hold your own breath too because that will give an accurate sense of how long the patient is holding their breath for you.
Thank you! I've been watching your channel for years, and you always have an answer to my questions.

This is great! I was looking for exactly this. I wanted to know what it sounded like.
I am wondering if you can actually feel this?
Every now and then I get a feeling like blood gurgling in my legs and sometimes in my ears or carotids. Is this a bruit or is it just blood gurgling? I do not ever remember feeling it when I was younger, except perhaps for in the ears.
founding bruit sound is a normal finding or abnormal finding or not.
One can use a cheap Ultrasound stethoscope to listen to neck flow in both IJVs and arteries. Doing this ambulatory, one can note differences through the day and during symptoms, in order to compare.
🎉 thanks!
Thank v much...
