    I live in Beijing and this morning on my way to work I walked past a giant BRF poster, and in nearby subway stations there were a few Armed Police patrolling(not something you see in regular days). Then the reality struck me hard, "oh, shit ,this big Belt and Road thing is really happenning, and it's happening right HERE where I live". Leaders and officials form 130+ countries are here for this event and they are here for communication, cooperation, opportunities and development.
    China indeed has come a longway, from a agricultural country who could barely feed her own people, to a world power that seeks and promotes a multi-polar world. I look forward to see how BRI evolves in the next 10 years and where China will stand among fellow countries and nations.

      @liangbaoge Před 8 měsíci +3

      In China's principles of foreign relations, the term "loyalty" simply doesn't exist. The fundamental principles are peace, equality, and mutual benefit. Over the past decade, some less powerful countries have defaulted multiple times, and China has cooperated with their governments for renegotiation. The best examples are Greece and Malaysia. Greece's former Foreign Minister mentioned in the United States that the new government felt the previous deal was unfair, and China said, "Okay, let's renegotiate."

    Value of trade between China and BRI countries went from .68T$ in 2014 (BRI inception) to just under 2T$ in 2022 over the 8 years (ref Statistica). In other words, in 2014 China depended on US+EU for the bulk of its trade. After introducing BRI China trade with US/EU and BRI has reached rough parity in just 8 years.
    China also stopped recycling surplus USD into US Treasuries to fund US deficits. In stead it cycled some USD surplus into BRI infrastructure building to facilitate China-BRI trade. The US hates that Treasuries are losing bids.

    China subscribes to the dogma that for a nation to achieve economic prosperity, it must prioritise and put in place a modern and efficient infrastructure (要想富、先修路).
    That is so very true! There is no doubt that infrastructure connectivity is the key to prosperity. For China has demonstrated, over the last 2 decades, that its spectacular economic transformation and modernisation could not have been possible had it not put in place inarguably the world most advanced infrastructure. In fact, the net benefits of connectivity and transport route improvement to a nation must be assessed on their economy-wide impacts, and not from the isolated project feasibility of cost versus revenue.
    The so-called “debt-trap”, is nothing more than a bogey used by the West to demonise China and to frighten countries into believing that they are better off without modern infrastructures.
    In truth without investing in modern infrastructures a developing country will remain in the “poverty-trap”.
    Even for a developed economy like the United States, maintaining its public infrastructure assets in good condition is critical. But, alas, the US public infrastructure has been frozen in time capsule.
    While the US own infrastructure assets are crumbling, it is telling the rest of the world “don’t build it”. But how could a country develop or sustain its development without being connected by an efficient road, sea, and telecommunication network to the rest of the world?
    And that is precisely what the Belt and Road Initiative is all about.

      Infrastructure is not a be-all end-all. It depends on how intelligently it is done. China has built some impressive infrastructure, but it has also built a lot of defective structures (tofu dregs), and some of its projects do not provide benefits that justify the cost, for example, some of the bullet trains have been built on routes that have too little traffic to be viable. The same issues show up in BRI projects as they do in projects within China.

    "Guanxi" also refers to whether the trade partner you are dealing with, the employee just hired, the government official concerned .. can they be trusted? It is not diffferent from Japnese : if the employee proves within 3 years, a person of low character, he will be excluded from the circle; but if he is known to be honest, able and humble, he has a open cheque book. This same concept applies in trade and business. It is about character and trust. Similar Confucianist values; about the "superior man".
