  • How to DIY Winterizing a 2 Stroke Outboard Engine | Mercury Force 120HP. We take you through the steps on how we prepare our bowrider Starcraft Boat with Mercury Ourboard engine for storage over the winter.
    We install engine muffs and attach to a garden hose. Then with water running, we start the mercury outboard and let it warm up. With the engine running we spray fogging oil into each carburetter until the engine stalls.
    As an added measure we remove each spark plug and shoot a small burst of fogging oil into each cylinder and replace the spark plugs.
    Lastly drain the lower unit gear oil and refill

    I asked my boat mechanic over 30 years of service. How he winterize boat motors. First thing he said don't fog he said he has saw it do more harm to motors then help. Said just run gas out or run good stabilizer through motor change lower unit oil. That's all he does has less issues. Just don't fog it.

    • @mudbrats

      @@mooes257 Yes on an OUTBOARD notor when it is left completely vertical (downward trim position) it will drain completely. On an I/O I believe you need to winterize the impeller system with antifreeze, but not needed on an Outboard.

    • @mudbrats
      @mudbrats  Před rokem +2

      if its an I/O inboard outboard, you need to flush with antifreeze. With an outboard like mine, as long as the motor is stored trim full down witb motor vertical, it will drain empty - no water means no risk of freezing

    • @mudbrats
      @mudbrats  Před 5 lety +4

      Not on an outboard. As long as you store it with the outboard completely down (not tilted), the water system drains by gravity on an outboard. On an I/O you need to antifreeze the water lines

      By looks - 2 Stokes are more compact looking - plugs are usually on top of each cylinder, 4 strokes usually look bulky and have Cam shafts and valve bodies on top of each cylinder. Also 2 Stokes will either be mixed gas and oil or have a separate oil tank for the oil. Four Strokes will have the oil pour right into the engine and like your car does.
