Proving Polarities and Paradox - A Conversation with Jared Halverson

- For this week's episode, we’re really excited to bring on Jared Halverson.
Jared shares with us a really important concept he calls “proving contraries,” -something we’ve talked a little bit about on the podcast before using the term “polarities.” He spoke with us about how recognizing these polarities can help us understand our own strengths and weaknesses, how attributes that are positive, taken too far, almost always become problematic, and how wrestling with contraries is essential in a life full of growth and meaning.
Jared Halverson is an associate professor of Ancient Scripture at Brigham Young University, and has taught religion courses at the high school and college level since 1998. He studied history and religious education at BYU and earned a PhD in American religious history at Vanderbilt University, focusing on secularization, faith loss, and anti-religious rhetoric. He is frequently involved with interfaith dialogue, has been a featured speaker in both devotional and academic settings across the country. He also hosts a popular CZcams channel and podcast called “Unshaken.”

Thank you for doing these episodes! I was inactive 16 years and made my way back to the Gospel. I wish we would’ve had these types of discussions 20 years ago.
This concept is so profound. It’s liberating. One suggestion when having these mental experiments is to make sure that the contraries are both true. I’ve seen people go through this exercise and justify shifting their position to the middle of worldly extremes. The problem with that is that worldly extremes are always shifting and the premises they were based on were faulty to begin with. We don’t want to be tossed around by ever-changing incorrect ideas.
I'm following Jared Halverson on his Unshaken and any talks I can find.
Just enjoy his way of teaching us and he remembers the older Apostles and teachers that now we have only videos.Im his age just didn't have abilities for regular schools.

I recommend the great book, “ Faith After Doubt” by Brian McLaren. He’s a basic Christian evangelist preacher. He addresses faith crisis’ with some steps as well. I started watching J. Halverson ‘s Unshaken. However , 2years ago as I fell down the rabbit hole. I’ve been a devout member for 65 years but 2 years ago I found out there were multiple versions of the first vision . I began by reading “ RoughStone Rolling “ by Richard Bushman then “ No Man Knows My History “ by Fawn Brodie. I continued reading /studying 30 books on facts of the Church doctrine and history. I read “ CES Letter” by Jeremy Runnel. I was devastated! How could I have lived my entire life in the lie of the cult of the Church of Jesus Christ of LDS? Now at 65 in the final stages if multiple sclerosis I’ve had time to study ancient Egyptian history and Old Testament, New Testament and the Apocryphal books. I bought the New Revised Standard Version. I could hardly put it down! So easy to read! I highlight, Google and Wikipedia every thing that was new. I thought I had studied before as a Seminary teacher, Gospel doctrine teacher, Institute student, Relief Society teacher, even the Stake Young Women’s president. How could I tell my 4 adult children and grandchildren.? Even my ex-husband who I divorced because he left after being on the High council? Sad 😢 Press on my friends.

This paradox principle came for the hernetics philosphy and the number two to the pytagorism, if you want to learn more go for the hermetism and pytagorism

I really appreciate Jared and his ability to tackle tough issues without making his ideological leanings obvious. Very often, when someone is overt (often proudly) with making his/her bias known, it turns off the ears of people on the other side of the issue. That is a shame, because everyone has something of value for us to hear, something that can help us in our walk back home. But sometimes, once we hear key words or phrases, we turn off the "ears to hear".
I love the Celestial Room but cannot stay long due to other duties, I have to get back to work.
For Brother Jared Halverson, how would you explain the scripture in Revelation about being neither hot nor cold but lukewarm as a polarity or as contraries?
Truth-filled, proven contraries give us a buttressed and peaceful place to stand.

I wonder why I can’t be holding in balance my “doing AND being” in my “temple worship” throughout the entire session, and not just in the Celestial room. I would hate for someone to judge me as not worshipful based on the time I spent there! It’s awful to suggest it!
Often, I have received revelation during, and I may seek clarification or confirmation in the Celestial room, but many times I want to get to my locker to write it all down.
Absolutely agree. Work, family, life matters all compete with traveling to the temple. How long we're able to stay to worship should never be called into question.
Jesus always did the "loving thing" and we could ask ourselves in each specific situation, "What is the loving thing to do?" We could also ask Heavenly Father for revelation; ratification for what we have decided to do.
Temple work vs. Temple worship I found to be ironically fraught as I longed to remain in the Celestial room for as long as I was permitted but I was often rushed out and told it was not permitted… ugh!
I always stay in the Celestial room for a really long time and have never been asked to leave. I can't imagine why you would be told to leave. Perhaps talk to the temple president about it.

What Temple was that. I can sit at the L. A. Temple for hours if I choose to.
I too have stayed in various temples for long periods without interruption. I have even seen people fall sleep in the celestial room without being interrupted. 😂 @Nielsen Clan hang in there. Give the Lord time to work in your heart. He will bring you the answers you are looking for. Mr. Dehlin isn't one you want to follow. He is making a very good living on setting himself up as a beacon for those who are feeling confused about their faith.

Hi Danielle, you could check out “Stages of Faith” by James Fowler, but it can be a bit academic. I’d consider looking at “Faith After Doubt” by Brian McLaren (also episode 67 of this podcast), or “Navigating Mormon Faith Crisis” by Thomas McConkie - both of which present very useful and readable stages frameworks. (You don’t have to be in faith crisis to enjoy them! 😊) -Tim

The real Paradox is when you have the dog in the yard on the right of your wife and the car on the left AT THE SAME TIME! Then what do you do?
Did the men who claim to hold the keys and authority to my eternal salvation lie to me ? Yes ! The whole narrative I was raised on, the church is running from ! What happened to Maroni on all the new temples? How come all the artwork of Joseph is disappearing from the walls ? You make me throw up in my mouth Halverson, your a sellout! It’s not true pal !
Moroni on top of the temple will not save you but Jesus will, Joseph Smith will not save you too but Jesus will.
The Gospel of Jesus Christ is very simple: Faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, repentance, Baptism and gift of the Holy Ghost. All other tools that were given are to help us navigate but the main focus has to be on Jesus.
Search your heart and ask yourself - what is your relationship with Jesus Christ.
