  • I have restored dozens of Thonet chairs, but this time I wanted to do it differently....
    LAZER : amzn.to/3k63wbD
    Thonet chairs are most iconic chairs of all times. They started making them since 1850 and they are still made today. Their design is one of the best that has been ever invented. The chair is made out of beech that is steamed for 5 hours and then formed into metal molding. This method gives very durable structure. Rumor has it, that Thonet chair was allegedly thrown down from the Eiffel Tower to show how well made its structure is and it survived.

    Gorgeous and such craftsmanship. I actually just bought this laser yesterday for my husband’s birthday. He does woodworking strictly as a hobby and I saw someone else I follow (who does woodworking/furniture restoration as hobby as well) use it, so I’m excited to give it to him. Just loving your channel, I’ve binge watched your videos this week and am in just awe at your work.

      I've got one with a relief seat but it's very badly worn and barely recogniseable in some areas. The wood is stained a very dark red. My aunt wanted to get rid of the chair and gave it to me, telling me it was completely worthless. Considering she's a professional art restorer I tend to trust her.

      @sebastiankrause6031 Před 2 lety +3

      The Thonet chair No. 14 was the first model built in the new bentwood technic (in 1850). The seat came with viennese braid. Later the seat also was built out of plywood, blank, drilled or with embossed ornament. I love the Thonet furniture. The classics as the modern ones.

    I love the design you chose for the chair seat and the lazer was fun to watch. I am curious how the patterns were originally done as I am sure they did not have lazers when the chairs were made. Thanks for showing the old catalogue of patterns that were available, I do like the one you used, great job as usual.

    • @lwilton
      @lwilton Před 2 lety +11

      My guess is that they had a big iron plate with the pattern raised above the surface, and they basically used this as a big branding iron in a press to burn the pattern into the flat seat before forming it. I've seen that sort of thing done in a lot of old films where they were making furniture, boxes, or even fancy cakes where they wanted a label on it. I don't know for a fact it was done this way here, but it seems like a reasonable guess.

    8:56 These oval head screws are quite hard to find! I needed one to complete a restoration of a pair of Thonet 233 style chairs. Could only find them in stainless steel so used it on the underside where it wouldn't easily be seen, and hand coloured the head with a marker pen to match the others. Your video has given me some useful tips - thanks!

    У меня есть стул, абсолютно идентичный этому во всём, кроме того что у него нет ни каких отверстий в сиденье. Он стоит у меня на веранде и последние пятьдесят лет я сижу на нём, когда летом пью чай и смотрю на свой сад. А до этого на нём сидел мой дед.
    Но он в совершенной исправности, только сильно потемнел за прошедшие годы.
    Вот посмотрел и подумал - а может обновить? Или уж пусть внуки, если он будет им ещё нужен.
    Отличная работа, как всегда. Посмотрел с удовольствием.

      From Wikipedia: Autonomous sensory meridian response, sometimes auto sensory meridian response, is a tingling sensation that usually begins on the scalp and moves down the back of the neck and upper spine. A pleasant form of paresthesia, it has been compared with auditory-tactile synesthesia and may overlap with frisson.
      From Oxford Languages: noun
      a feeling of well-being combined with a tingling sensation in the scalp and down the back of the neck, as experienced by some people in response to a specific gentle stimulus, often a particular sound.
      "ASMR is triggered by things like whispering voices, paper tearing, and scalp massage"
