And almost 15 years later I finally find out that old mate stopped for 20 seconds in qualifying haha. The amount of times I watched this whole film from start to end growing up after riding its mates just dumbfounds me how I didn’t catch on to it!
That Matti deliberately qualified slow to get ahead of a storm that everyone else was apparently blindsided by is as interesting a story to me as Sam's great run...
They weren't blindsided mate, if your in the running for the overall you need the qualifying points, even though Sam ended up third it was still worth more than what Matti did in terms of the overall title.
@@Rocky_Hill_Iron_Works I didn't mean to say it was the right thing to do or that it paid off in points or that it was more impressive than what Sam did. Just that it is interesting to me. Matti put himself on the top of the podium on a day that the world champion had what people were calling the best downhill ride ever.
there is footage of the crash in Earthed 5 - Sam Hill Quebec within the first 10 seconds of the segment. it would have cost him way more than 3 seconds. most legendary run in the history of DH.
2:12 didn't even notice the lower third, but recognised him immediately by the voice and accent! Damn, i knew he was pro at some point, didn't know he had ridden champery
The glory day of mountain biking. I gave up downhill 6 years ago, back then everyone start using 27.5 and the bikes getting bigger and bigger. I just not comfortable with those big bike. Right now i'm back with the trail 27.5 bike a lot smaller than downhill bike this day and pretty similiar size with downhill bike back then. But still this is for me the glory day of mountain bike where everyone just using the same wheel size and no body disadvantage.
If Sam didn't crash he would have won this race by quite a large margin in my opinion. I remember seeing the crash when I watched it live but I can't find a video of it. It would have cost him quite a bit of time.
No there not, the difference is fuck all in terms of overall times, checkout the video on pinkbike with Rob Warner comparing the 1997 GIANT ATXone vs the 2015 GIANT GLORY its a good real world example of what i mean. Don't get me wrong bikes have improved a lot for sure, but not nearly as much as people trying to sell bikes by talking shit about the old ones would have you beleave.
Their bike wheels looked small and the frame looked bulky and heavy. Their clothing looked so baggy, and this was only almost 6 years ago. MTB bikes and clothing design came a long way...:)
Legendary performance and great context from the interviews but HOLY FUCK THIS MUSIC IS FUCKING HORRIBLE! Yeah, just boost that volume between the interview excerpts, that'll be FUCKING GREAT FOR EVERYONE'S EARS!!! Fuck.
@@stellanmccarthy9039 exactly, the newer bikes suite newer style more open tracks, the tight techy stuff is still better on bikes like yours that were made for that stuff. brakes and tires are about the only areas where there have been big improvements.
Sam Hill was the victor in the eyes of most if not all mountain bikers. Incredible run even more incredible rider, Hill is the greatest downhiller in history. Matti should have been DQ'ed!!!
2020 - I'm watching this again. So badass.
I've watched this so many times, still gives me chills. What a beast.
Something about that ironhorse Sunday that I still love to this day
Back in the day I remember this race as with sooooo many more Sam Hill specials! Hill there’s no one like him!
And almost 15 years later I finally find out that old mate stopped for 20 seconds in qualifying haha. The amount of times I watched this whole film from start to end growing up after riding its mates just dumbfounds me how I didn’t catch on to it!
awesome that the announcer gave recognition when Hill came in... definitely one of the best DH runs ever. 2008 World Champs is another.
Gmbn brought me here
Me too dude 😂
@Moguri Jäger his voice still the same 😂😂😂
Same
Same
same
Back then the bikes were shorter and the hair was longer
god damn, i'm riding that commencal frame and have long hair :')
What's got longer about the bikes?

This was the sickest run in MTB History !
2022 here in Brazil I’m still watching this video 🔥🙌🏼
Don't GAF what anyone says. Sam Hill is the King of gravity mtb. Guy was a straight up animal at DH.
The greatest rider of all time
Danny Hart can´t Top it, with his massive run!
Fuck it's been 16 years.... legendary run by Sam, remember watching this live
This video keeps on coming up on my feed every time I come to CZcams, and I watch is every time.
That Matti deliberately qualified slow to get ahead of a storm that everyone else was apparently blindsided by is as interesting a story to me as Sam's great run...
Qualifying is worth points for the overall too so playing tactics like Matti did is a big gamble if your in the running.

anyone could have checked the weather :D
I just love to think what matti thought doing that and still almost getting beat hahaha
Gwin’s chainless run was incredible, but for me, this is the greatest DH run in history
2:13 LOL HE IS YOUNG DON
The only guy that looks like he fits the bike 😅

"It ain't over, well until its over"
Dan Atherton
I miss the old lineup... Vouilloz, Hill, Peat, Gee and the rest...
Yep. 2020 Sam Hill still the GOAT.
I love this video
Favourite rider for all time
gives me chills
I just came here after watching the WC DH in Lousã. Incoming rain in the middle of the field - here we go!
Sam Hill has insane skill
The GOAT 🐐
2:12 didn't even notice the lower third, but recognised him immediately by the voice and accent! Damn, i knew he was pro at some point, didn't know he had ridden champery
Sou fã de SamHill

It was on one of the earthed videos
BEST VIDEO DH
what year is this?
Where can I find the full run plz?
It’s a GMBN presenter
You can see how pissed he was that he didn't win. Still smoked all of them.
Bring back the baggy kits
I can't hear the talking. Any chance you can make the voices louder and the music quiter
What are those bikes
Sam's accent sounds like Aussies in the 60's and 70's, haha. Before anyone takes offence, I'm Aussie and think Sam's awesome.
champ!!!
The iron horse sunday was the top DH bike at the time with the dw link
Still ride and race my 06 sunday team and wont give it up anytime soon
Brendogs hair
These bikes are like model A fords

They all look like their riding kids bikes. 🤣

This video is 10 minutes of just people saying how great Sam Hill's run was, and about 30 seconds of shitty footage of the actual run.
Hey why are they slamming downhill on those XC bikes? JK..it's crazy how far the bike geometry has evolved.
I know. I had a go on Champery last year and it wasn't anything like as bad as I was expecting. That must be down to my bike because I suck at steeps.
The ih sunday had dw link suspension which was pretty advanced
I still ride an 06 sunday and it makes tight technical tracks a fair bit more managable then my mates 19 commencal fury
@@stellanmccarthy9039 exactly, the newer bikes suite newer style more open tracks, the tight techy stuff is still better on bikes like yours that were made for that stuff. brakes and tires are about the only areas where there have been big improvements.
Gee Atherton looks better with his ears not tucked in his hat
Why they riding bmx's😀

BobaFett MTB Why? He calculated the weather and used it to his advantage. Everyone could have done that as well
BobaFett MTB ridiculous. Absolutely no reason to disqualify someone for being smart.
@@MD-uu5nt there’s smart but also spirit of the sport
This run holds nothing against Danny Hart's 2011 run.
Except Sam’s run in same race, Danny did a Bradbury
Bah... Aaron Gwin’s run in Mont Sainte Anne 2017 where it poured and he actually won is way more impressive.
Uh, no ... as hard as MSA is, Champery in the wet is a different beast entirely.
Sam Hill was on a different level on 2007, he qualified 14 seconds up in equal conditions to every other rider.. Thats insane!
Why do these videos always have terrible music in them just make it have nothing you're alienating 90% of the viewers.
God what awful music
ehtikhet yea the music ruins the vid
ehtikhet I love it, I can't think of this run without this song going through my head now.
The shit music thats being blasted at way too high a level from start to finish has ruined this video. Well done
