Something that is true / valid in all space and for all time, is called sanatan.
So the term SANATAN SATYA means universal eternal truth.
HUmans can not really make a universal eternal faith, humans themselves are not universal nor eternal.
So what is the meaning of 'SANATAN DHARMA' ? It meas the laws of nature, laws of physics, laws that all things in existence are subjeted to , including stars, planets, tables trees animals chairs balls muslims christians chinese communist party everything in existence is a follower / subjected to these laws or Dharma of Nature (prakriti).
Sanatan Dharma IS NOT human society's dharma.
The term for that is MANAV DHARMA.

But there are also other explanations on Hinduism.Hinduism itself made from a thousand religions. There is no particular belief system in Hinduism. I will say that In this Abrahamic monotheistic expansion and clashes (I think you agree with it) on the world Sanatana Dharma is an easy and simple and counterpart for Hinduism to the outer world to explain some of its outer surfaces. Sanatana Dharma is like a small representation or I will say 1st layer of defense of Hinduism you don't know how many layers behind until cross the first layer. I tried to explain although it is complicated as I said.
