PT 1. Building a Demolition Derby car for UTC 2021 (Utah County Fair, Spanish Fork Utah)

  • Today I'm in Heber City, Utah helping my friend Brad Bowman build his demolition derby car for the Utah County Fair demolition derby. The car is a 1974 Cadillac DeVille.

    This is crazy. I don’t think people realize or appreciate how much work goes into these cars. It’s cool to get a hands on point of view. Keep up the great work.

      This is just a glimpse. There’s $10-15k in each of those cars.

      @@RobbyVsGarage If i had only 10% of your mechanical skills and funds, i would give it a shot.
      We in Europe also have demo derbies, but they are called "Banger Race", and the crashing and destruction is done while driving on an oval.
      Maybe you have seen it before.
      The regulations are, to get into first position during 20 laps.
      And nearly everything is allowed, to take out you opponent.
      One spectaculair component, is that the speeds on the track are quite high at times, (in comparison with the traditional Demo Derbies)
      At the end of the day all cars that has survived all heats, are gathered on the track for the final "Demoliton Derby".

    I gave up the "DERBY" after my back surgery. back in the day we had to run the factory drive train, so not knowing the history of the engine/ trans. I would rebuild the starter, carb, replace spark plug wires with solid core wires. spark plugs were replaced, distributor rebuilt also. all the fluids were replaced. I used 70wt. aviation oil in the engine. the trans was refilled with fresh fluid plus 1 quart of 30 wt. engine oil( trans fluid is 10wt. oil died red, plus modifiers). the differential was drained ( spiders welded)and refilled with 85w140wt. gear oil. the electrical system was rewired. I ran the heater core fan(mini- radiator) , alternator, ect. everything was switched/ fused( except ignition / starter) there was "NO TWISTING OF WIRES" I ran 2 batteries 12 volts to all loads except the starter, it got 24 volts!!!!. the engine cooling system got a "ROYAL FLUSH", and the factory thermostat was replaced with a 160 degree thermostat( need restriction for good heat transfer, and does not cause the water pump to become a power hog) it was refilled with just water. radiator was replaced with a 4 row core "H.D.".. the trans got a "HUGE" oil cooler( mounted in the back with the gas tank. when it came to fuel, I used premium grade gasoline, with 2 cycle oil mixed in ( 16 to 1 ratio) this provides good upper cylinder wall lubrication and valve stem lube, and cuts down on combustion temperatures. I always did good, never got the engine "HOT", never lost any coolant, and won a lot of races!!!. back in the day, you did not use the front end of your car as a "HAMMER" ( I always kept the front end clean) and I never did any "PUSHING". I was not into "KILLING THE CAR", I wanted to win the feature!!!! ( AND DID with a whopping 300 dollar first place prize).as I see it, unless you spend 20k dollars on a drive train, you would be better off by staying on the porch, otherwise you are going to get "KILLED"!!!

    I run compact class mostly it's a family tradition it's great but I miss the old days of running stock cars no it's tanks no matter the class

      Nice. There was a vic there with a fuel injected 6.0l and it ripped

    I often see that the engines are well overheated, and that even the exausts are glowing red from the overheated engine.
    My question is, howe long can you use an engine?
    Do you everytime use a different one?
    Or do you try to refurbish the engine as much as possible?

      The engines are built to withstand the abuse and are used over and over all season.
