Hello Eli Gilbert, I just subscribed to your 30 days lesson on how to play Banjo. I want to thank you for my first lesson.
Thank you for this I may by one … I need some real blessings … of joy
I picked up the Banjo like two years ago. I wasl 60 years old. I was diagnosed with stage 4 Throat cancer.. and had to get throat surgery,I woke from a 22 hr surgery, and no voice box ,and couldn't breathe through my mouth and nose.. so I was through a no music dilemma. I accidentally found your web sight and didn't understand a thing u said.. but I practiced and practiced 8 ten hours a day. I was doing everything you were teaching. And getting really decent. Then I smashed my right wrist. I am a lumberjack. Then just as I was make really good progress,I had to buy a left handed banjo...??? I can't move my thumb at all. So I started to play left handed... And for 16 weeks I practiced everything you taught. I just want to say thank you for caring, and loving your craft enough to post such great tutorials... I know this a lot of words but I can't tell you how much your banjo lessons and your knowledge saved me. So thank you for doing what u do.. ps an your getting so so much better with your picking. Sorry for this short story/ half a novel. But you saved me with your banjo lessons. An I am cancer free!! And no longer can talk no voice box Eli your are such a great teacher and I thank you my family thanks you . And keep on keeping on . Thank you Young Man...
Oh shit, what a story mate! Stay healthy and safe!
I sold you that left-handed banjo... in San Diego.
I'm so GRATEFUL to hear all of this, brother-man!
So glad to hear you’re c-free love! I’m so impressed by this story! Thanks for the beautiful wholesomeness 💕
Man has had a rough life
Awesome story man❤❤❤
Struggling through this, I really appreciate it. I hope to learn to play before my 60th birthday. This will be my first musical instrument. Thank you! Your an incredible good teacher!
I'm 60 now and starting over again on banjo and first time guitar. Patience and practice my friend. Best wishes to you!!!
Me too :-) Lets do this
I will be 50 in a month, this is one of my birthday presents. Just think, we both have plenty of time to get our 10,000 hours on banjo in!
I'm 26 and just happy to be along for the ride lol
Hi folk , 62 and just starting ! Hope I haven’t left it too late …..
Well as they say in the ole country "better late then never" or " you can not teach an ole dog new tricks" ... at 72 years old I am about to prove one of those proverbs correct and the other wrong.
Waiting for the arrival of a new beginners 5 string banjo and like others, this will be my first musical instrument.
Eli thank you so very much for taking the time to publish your "Absolute Beginner Banjo Course" and doing so for free. I cannot imagine the scores of banjo players who have benefitted from your kindness. I hope I too, become one of them soon.
You have done Earl Scruggs proud.
It is refreshing to hear someone speak clearly, intelligently, and with a good audio level. Thank you for this video and for sharing your talent.
I encourage anyone with is just starting out on the banjo to keep watching Eli’s videos and stick with it. I have minimal musical experience and within a month’s time I was able to play “boil that cabbage down” and “cripple creek” with my father (him playing the backup on guitar). Eli is a fantastic teacher.
thanks bro
I impulse bought a Banjo today. I had no idea what I was doing, and because of you I'm making more progress in 1 day than I thought I would make in 1 year! I subscribed to Patreon, thanks mate this is just legendary.
How is the learning going?
How's it going? Let us know
✊👌Me too a few weeks back. Cool instrument
Did you give up?
Mate just got to play your desk like a banjo, put strings on that sucker! (Still going btw)
They say it's never to late. Never played anything but a clarinet in school. (70's) and have always loved the sound of a banjo. Well now at 63, I want to try. Just bought a used Kay remo open back. Just l picked my first string watching this video. Put a smile on my face with just learning this. Thanks!
Keep it up Randy!
@@MichaelTurner856 thanks!
You know, I've played guitar, bass, and some piano, but I just bought a banjo and holy shit this is the most fun instrument I've played hands down.
I'm tryna get better so I can sit on my campus' quad and play banjo for the pedestrians, and these lessons are helping a lot in achieving my country ass goal.
This comment was brought to you by the Banjo Gang.
I'm 64 years old, retired and tired of winter in PA. I've always loved classic country music and especially the sound of someone playing "Foggy Mountain Breakdown". A friend of mine plays three stringed instruments and recently surprised me with a nice used banjo, a case, picks, a tuner and a training book to read then said "Here you go, now start practicing" :). The next day, I did some reading then found your training videos and I'm using them to practice as often as possible. Your method of teaching is excellent and a few years of playing piano years ago helps me a lot with tempo. I'm beginning lesson three this evening and wanted to say Thank You !!! for sharing your knowledge.
I recently inherited my late Grandpa’s banjo and this found me perfectly. I bawled my eyes out the whole time learning this but I’m excited to do this for the next 30 days
Saw this and bought a banjo, such a pain in the ass driving home with it on my motorcycle 😂
😂😂😂❤
You are a natural teacher. I am visually impaired but can follow you with audio alone. Thank you for the printed lessons as well, they are simple, clear and are very accessible enlarged. This is Day 1 and I am excited to get started.
I'm sitting at home impatiently waiting for my first banjo to be delivered when I see this suggestion for your video pop out. This is the perfect lesson for me as I don't think I have much musical talent, only a burning desire to learn to play the banjo. I'm going to enjoy working through your course.
i am with you on that mine just got here pick it up tomorrow
@@joshuasmithey1679 I got it two days ago! I've been practicing this video and Jim Pankey's lesson #1. I'm excited for you man!
That's all you need my friend is desire patience and practice ,practice, practice. My very best wishes for your future beautiful banjo music. Lol I think the world would be a much better place if everyone had and played atleast one banjo🤗
Yoooooo! Same!
Can u play now?
My husband has been promising to buy me a banjo since we started dating 11 years ago. Today was the day that he delivered on that promise! He found your videos before gifting it to me and recommended I start here. You made this first lesson easy and I’m so excited to practice and watch the next one tomorrow!
My first banjo is on the way. I can't wait to get started!
Picked a banjo up for the first time just after my 70th birthday. Hoping these old fingers will learn to move fast enough. Looking forward to learning. 3 lessons in now and keeping up.
Thank you so much for this! Coming from playing saxophone for 7~ish years, and just getting my late Grandpa's banjo, I really want to live this fun common interest between me and him...just wish he was here to enjoy it with me.
Same story here except I do not play saxophone haha
I’m also learning to play my grandfather’s banjo!!
Elementary music teacher here...I am learning Banjo to prove to my students anyone can learn a new instrument....he explains this so well and simply I hope to use this same style with some kiddos who want to learn Banjo as well...
Impression from the first 3 seconds: Man, I'd LOVE to learn Banjo from Harry Potter!
When my grandpa had his stroke, he was just wasting away for a while and couldn't speak very coherently, but he remembered his instruments. I'd walk by his room and hear him play sometimes. He passed away about a year ago and despite not having a will, everyone decided I should inherit his instruments and he would've agreed since I was always borrowing his dad's acoustic from him.
One of these instruments is a banjo, probably the highest quality instrument he owned. It's been sitting in pristine condition as he always cleaned it and kept it in a case when not in use. I'm a southern man from a small town so I'm no stranger to hearing banjo, but the sound was kind of annoying or just boring until I grew older, and now I have an appreciation for it. I'd love to learn at least one bluegrass song, so here I am. I primarily play guitar but by a stroke of luck I suppose I'm also familiar with pianos, ocarinas, drums, violins and harmonicas. Hoping to add banjo to that list.
OK dude, I'm going to put my trust in you (not that it's a really big deal). I live in Ohio, it's a couple days from the end of April. Summer's coming on, Memorial Day is almost upon us. People are coming outside despite the COVID-19 pandemic, little league baseball is in full swing and their will be picnics galore in 33 days. I am going to diligently follow your lessons and plan on playing Boil That Cabbage Down at the Memorial Day picnic (no matter how bad I am), so let's get with it.
Go and get em! 👍
How’d you make out?
That was the first tune I learned on the Dulcimer 👍🏻
Well? How did it go?
so, how did you do?
I've just followed the last lesson of this series. I really recommend this course to everyone who wants to learn to play bluegrass banjo. No matter where you come from, you can follow these lessons at your own pace and practicing really takes you to a higher level. I'm glad I found these series because it really helped me to start.
I got my very first old German Banjo one mounth ago! And The Day after boom! I've found your awesome tutorial. Blessings from Poland.
@Idk Idk He didn't say it was the first banjo ever made... I'm sure they're manufactured in Germany too.
me, guitar player with 10 something years of experience (and who doesn't even own a banjo) at 2 am:
_"interesting"_
Thank you for not talking to us like we are complete idiots, yet giving us the info we need to do this. This is a great balance and I am looking forward to this. Now if I could only figure out what banjo I should get that I can afford.
hi john, did you end up getting one? I am looking at these and not sure which brand to invest in. was looking at these CELTIC 5-STRING BANJO from luna
you are a saint, most video series assume you already have some experience with the instrument, ive played wind instruments all my life but this aint no trumpet.
thank you for actually starting at step 0
Received my 1st banjo today after 30yrs of guitar playing and I already know I'm gonna love it. Such a great sound.
Thank you for filming these video's! I am a 63 year old grandma, who bought a Deering banjo 25 years ago. Life got in the way of me learning how to play at the time. Well, now is the time, as I still want to learn, & show my granddaughter if I can learn, she can learn her violin! 😂
I just can't express how grateful I am for your videos and lessons. You're easy to learn from and obviously put a lot of thought and effort into the lessons. Thank you. I'm so excited to learn the banjo.
Coming to banjo from guitar. I must say that I am enjoying this a lot. I spent my first day just learning how the banjo works and what music the five string was best suited to. I had no idea you had to set the bridge yourself. With the guitar, it’s already done for you. It was definitely a learning experience. After that I was ready to play a song.
I just found this lesson and I am SO EXCITED to learn from you! Extremely clear, patient, kind, and informative teaching style without being overwhelming to noobs like me. Thank you!
My grandpa gave me a banjo, passed down through our family for a long time and I had no idea how to even hold it much less play it or what the finger picks were for!! Thank you so much! 19 days till Christmas and I promised my grandpa that I’d play him a song on Christmas Day 😅 Thank you so much! Your truly an AMAZING teacher!❤
This is the best online lessons i've found! I have never thought I was musical but I'm on day 8 and can play this song. Im slower than him but Im getting better everyday. And its so much fun! Thanks Eli!
This is such a great course! I'm just over halfway through and really coming along. I wish I could a guitar course this good on CZcams!
Just picked up my first banjo today and stumbled across these videos!! Very excited to watch all these over the next 30 days!!
Thanks so much for taking the time to walk us through banjo lessons. I can't imagine how much work you put into this so teaching it for free really amazes me. It's much appreciated.
So chill and so well explained! I was just able to afford my first banjo after years of wanting to learn how to play music. I'm very thankful for this resource!
Been trying to learn the banjo for a year now. This is the BEST beginners instruction course I've come across so far!!! Thanks for taking the time to explain every nuance, from reading tabs to technique.
Thank you Eli!! I've been playing the guitar & piano for over a decade now, but I need to come back to the basics for banjo. I appreciate you taking time to explain everything
Thanks so much Eli! I love this 30 day course. It’s more like a 90 day course for me, because I’m trying to master each lesson before moving forward. I’m currently on day 12! All the lessons are very clear and concise- just the right amount of content to learn in one go. I so appreciate all the work you’ve put into making your excellent videos.
Got my banjo out today that a dear friend gifted me and looked for some guidance to get started. What a great resource you are! Thanks for the helpful video. I look forward to learning with you...
I just found this channel and I am super excited. I just finished the first day and I really like the approach, slow and steady but reasonable expectations. Thanks
Duuuuuuuuude, i am so excited to start your lessons! For more than 3 years I wanted to start playing the banjo and following your channel since, without a banjo, because i was travelling and didnt want to carry it around. Now i ordered one and unpacked it today... so excited to start with your 30 day course! Love your calm and clear style of teaching!
Eli, I have been trying to teach myself to play the banjo, I am so grateful for your video lessons and you are an amazing banjo player as well as a fantastic teacher
Thank you for creating this 30 day banjo playlist!!! I bought a banjo last October and I fell out of practice. Doing this 30 day challenge will really help me get back into the habit of practicing everyday!
Just started this today, very happy with how you go about things. Have picked up and put down trying to learn over the past year after getting a banjo as a gift. Most tutorials seem to take a bit of knowledge for granted but you really break it down for scrubs like me. Looking forward to the next month
Got my banjo yesterday. Started my first lesson today with you. Thanks so much for providing this information!
Have fun!
Best wishes to you Rin.
How’s it going??
@@bz6001 it’s been going great! I actually performed for a talent show about 3 months ago! I performed the first two songs that you taught in the lesson.
@@rinsworld that's so cool!! great job
This video was incredibly well-thought out and put together; it answered all the questions I had both before the video and as they popped up during it. Never have I seen this level of thought put into an instructional CZcams video. Great work.
Exactly what I was thinking!
Had one of my coustomers gift me a Banjo that the kids in his highschool Band class rebuilt. Thanks for the first day. I'm 60 no musical talent..but you give me faith. I've already learned more in one day than I thought was possible.. Thanks
I just want to say that your course has already helped me feel so confident with playing the banjo. I've made it to day 3, and already I'm getting the hang of things. I actually practice almost daily, and if I can't, I at least watch the next video to prepare for the next time that I can. You've broken things down in a way that truly does keep it simple, but not too simple that I zone out or skip around. Thank you for this series, it's absolutely wonderful so far and I look forward to seeing how far I get in 30 days!
Thank you Eli, I have been wanting to play the 5 string banjo for years. After watching some of your lessons, it has inspired me to actually go and order a banjo. I'm eagerly awaiting the arrival of my first banjo. Looking forward to starting this course!
Wonderful start to your new series Eli!
Just starting to learn on my great grandfather's banjo. Thank you for your wonderful lessons!
I took up the ukulele years ago. Learnt bits... soon got bored. Bought an Ozark 2 years ago whilst drunk. Got some lessons... got bored. Found various tutorials... didn't persevere. Then someone recommended your channel.
I'm going to do my absolute best to stick with this. Your first lesson got me hooked!
I started playing on Feb 5 2021 and am having so mush fun playing banjo and I have started posting videos to document my progress. I just stumbled across this series and I really appreciate the quality you put into these lessons! they are PERFECT for a beginner! Thanks from Canada!
What banjo (make/model) did you end up buying? Looking into getting one myself
@@JD-pp3ml I got just a cheap one on amazon to start with. The company is Kmise, and its name on amazon is "Kmise Professional Banjo, 5 Strings 38'', 24 Brackets, Remo Drum Head, Removable Closed Sapele Back, with Banjo Beginner Starter Kit,Bag Tuner Strap Strings Pickup Picks Ruler Wrench Bridge"
I'm Happy with it as a starter banjo, but the finger picks that come with a "value pack" like this are pretty cheap so I would recommend buying some nice picks (10 - 15$) along side the banjo if you do get one like mine.
That's great I'm going to follow you as well I'm a third time beginner myself once banjo gets in your bones it seems to never leave🤗
I just bought a banjo and am so happy to have found these lessons! I learned guitar back in high school but I can already feel that this instrument might turn out to be my true love. 💗 Thanks for making these available! Off to practice! 🪕
Just got this banjo for xmas...excited to learn. You break things down wonderfully!
this is amazing! you broke everything down perfectly as someone who never got into instruments you made it so easy to understand im so excited for tomorrows lesson!
Really Nice lesson!
Was just thinking about getting a banjo and looked up what tutorials are out there and super glad that I found you 😃 Your channel makes getting started feel a little less intimidating 🤩
Hi Eli, I played claw hammer style many years ago, & the banjo has been in its case ever since. After watching lesson 1 of your 30 day course on blue grass style,I've got the banjo out and started lesson 1, & it feels great again. Thank you for a brilliant course, which I shall follow with pleasure. Paul Lucas.
Glad to hear it Paul!
My new banjo arrives this Friday, and I'm so excited to give your lessons a try then! Thanks so much for taking time to make these videos and share your talent with the rest of us!
Thank you for this series, I have always enjoyed the sound of bluegrass banjo, and my family gave me a five string for Christmas. This is my first string instrument to learn, previous instruments were percussion. I hope to be playing on a novice level by my 55th birthday in March
I'm a lifelong musician (but not banjo!) and this is as well presented as anything I've ever seen. Bravo!!
Thank you so much for this series! I've been having trouble finding lessons to start out with since November and this is already so clear and helpful!! What a great way to go into the new year!!
Glad to hear that!
I am so happy I have found these lessons I have had my banjo for 3 days and these lessons are amazing !!! ❤
Eli, i like your teaching style, like so many others i've played guitar for 40 years and have had a banjo sitting in its case for most of that time, i didn't try and play it because i was shocked at how heavy it is, hopefully with your straight no rubbish teaching style i will now put the guitar down and learn the banjo. thank you
My Washburn is heavy too. I bought a Lakota non cradle strap for mine. Hoping it helps even in the sitting position being that I'm in a wheelchair now🤗 best wishes. It's my firm belief everyone should make music and banjos are great🤗
Brilliant course - Thank you Mr Eli Gilbert Banjo Man. Loving it! Much appreciated.
Well, I’ve been playing for a few months now, but since I’ve found this I might as well reinforce the basic stuff in this course. Thanks!
This is awesome! I was feeling overwhelmed and you calmed me down. Thank you!
My grandfather gave me a banjo when i was a little kid. Its been sitting in my room for near 20 years. These lessons really help break things down in a way i can understand. Im gonna learn, i just wish he was still here to see me not waste his gift.
Thank you so much for putting up this 30 day series Eli. It's fantastic!! I actually started the banjo about 6 months ago and started with only right hand rolls and no fretting. I think that was a mistake. Got very good at some rolls, but as soon as I started left hand fretting the rolls blew up and it was like starting over again. I like that this lesson begins with left hand fretting on day one. I set the banjo aside for about 5 months to focus on the guitar but now I'm slowly coming back to the banjo and your series is perfect as there is no where near as much good banjo instruction as good guitar instruction. This is perfect to get me going again. I Subscribed and I'm hitting like on all these videos as I work through them. Good luck with your channel.
This lesson was just fantastic. I bought a banjo at the start of lockdown (a long time dream to play bluegrass) but have failed to progress. I felt uncomfortable - it felt cumbersome. The advice about getting situated and letting your hand relax was golden! You have reinspired me to keep nurturing that dream. Blessings from Wales 🙏
I bought me a banjo yesterday. Ships tomorrow. Glad this guy is here for me. I've played guitar forever. The roll is the hardest part for me. Practice!!!!
Starting this journey next week. Glad I found you, looking for to the next 30 days and beyond!
You are the most concise, clear spoken teacher ever. Thank you soooo much for doing what you do! I finally found the right teacher on here!
This series alone taught me how to play the banjo. Thank you Eli.
Thank you so much! I was skeptical about being able to learn from videos, but now I'm feeling very optimistic about it 😀
Have ordered a banjo and spotted you post this on Reddit, have subscribed and will get cracking on Wednesday when I arrives! Thank you for deciding to share the banjo joy
Hi 👋 , I’m Vikki , I live on the southeastern coast of Australia , & I’m so thrilled to find these free lessons . Thank you 🙏!!
I bought an old second hand banjo several years ago . I had to do a little maintenance on it , but it’s fine . I did get a start just playing a few things , and falling back on a guitar style of playing . But unfortunately I’ve had about 6 years of debility due to back issues , and the banjo has sat unused . Finally I’m getting well , and I made it back to a local singing group yesterday , many whom recalled that I was playing the banjo , which seems quite exciting to people , it was to me too ! 😂❤… so with renewed enthusiasm & confidence to dedicate myself to regular practise , I CZcamsd lessons last night and found yours Eli . It looks like a very well structured course to get me into playing . I’ve printed the book this morning and have had a practise as well . I’m 60 , i have struggled with physical issues since my youth , which has made being consistent with anything challenging . However , I’m keen to achieve my goal to complete this course , I’m very excited about it now ! Thank you so much !!! ❤😊
Thanks! I just did day one of the 30 days and am excited to relearn Scruggs playing after, get this, 33 years!! Great intro - I remember learning all of these things and your explanations are great :) I'm refreshing rolls as well altho I'm sure you get into that soon. Super stoked.
Thank you SO MUCH for putting this together! Wow, just what I was looking for. I didn't want to give up, but I needed to start somewhere and understand the basics for a good foundation. You rock! Your teaching style is great. Thank you, thank you!
I'll second that motion🤗
I've had this banjo for over 30 years. My brother-in-law won it in a card game and gave it to me since I play guitar. Always meant to try to play. So here I am starting now! Hoping to be able to accomplish this in 30 days!
Perfect for my resolution to get back to basics! Thanks Eli!!!!!
Wanted to say thanks for putting this out there. Last relative of mine who played passed recently and is the first time I haven't had someone in the family who decided I'd be the next to pick it up and easy break down for beginners when music can seem somewhat daunting at times.
Thank you! My grandpa just gave me his banjo but I have NO idea how to play! This helped me so much 😅 thanks a bunch!! 🙌🏼🙌🏼
Hi, I've found it helps a lot to make sure your finger nails on your left hand are trimmed short.
I'm enjoying your lessons! I've had my banjo since the 1950s in Berkeley when I bought a Vega Tubaphone 5-string from Barry Olivier, only $125 including its unusual case. I also got Pete Seeger's "How to play the 5-string banjo" and learned his style, and have been playing it that way ever since. And now I'm learning how to play it with picks. Wonderful. It may take me a while since I'm now 91. Cheers!
Was hanging out with a good friend last night. Decided I needed a banjo. Went out today and bought an old Lyle. Almost got cold feet. I've been smiling all day. Your video is 20 some minutes, I've probably spent an hour on it. Gonna practice til bed and probably gonna think about tomorrow's lesson all day til I get of work. Thank you bud. Hope I'm still as giddy as I am now a month down the road.
I've played guitar for over 20 years. Decided to learn banjo. Should arrive Friday, first plan is to follow your 30 days, and see where it leads me. Cant wait.
Stumbled upon you, I just bought my first banjo and loving your lessons.... Zipping through them and really excited...thank you!!!! Subscribed 🤠
awesome beginner lessons dude. I'm 30 and play a lot of instruments but I just got my first banjo and this was a great way to help get me started with it.
If I'd started a few years later I'd have had a much easier time, with lessons like this. I also understand it's a matter of demand, but it'd be great to have "talking" courses like this for intermediate-advanced players rather that mostly tabs that you find online.
Omg that video is absolutely AMAZING ... big big thank for sharing your knowledge in such a professional and accessible way.
Just bought a banjo and can’t wait to practice more and be good at it 🙏🏻🤩
Great work on your video love everything
THANKS
XXX
Really Good, you cover everything for somone who has literally just picked up a banjo
Got a banjo for Christmas and this is where I am starting. Thank you for a fantastic first lesson!
Great way to start the new year! Thanks! I’m not an absolute beginner; I’ve actually tried to learn BG banjo before now. I’m going to stick with you here and see if I can finally break through the wall that’s kept me from ever getting very far with it. (I’m fairly proficient at OT/CH style, fwiw.)
I have been a fingerstyle travis picker for over 20 years. I have always played without finger picks with only 3 fingers. Bought a banjo on a whim and after about 45 minutes of playing, felt very natural. I am 56 now and wish I would have explored the world of banjo much sooner. Look forward to exploring your course.
Amaaaazing thank you!!! Looking forward to the next 29 days 💕
Thank you. Bought a banjo today on a bit of a whim, and found your lessons and loving it. Brilliant
