My most under-rated kitchen utensil is a spoon. They're just so versatile and can be used for so many different things. Also for anyone wondering the scissors are the Zhang Xiaoquan precision utility scissors, I have a pair too.
the mexican elbow. I use it every day and it never lets me down. Great time saver.
My most under-rated kitchen utensil is my bench scraper. I use it almost every day. I use it on things such as bread to even hard candies. It is also one of the items you can use for anything. Since it's metal it won't break easily. Love your videos Justin, keep it up.
Having a unique pen is awesome, it's less likely to get stolen or lost. A foldable can-opener, and a small ( emergency ) squeeze bottle. Also depending on the culinary school, a bread knife can be a good idea. I love the gear vids.
I have a P-38 can opener, aka John Wayne. But I'm looking for a good quality "FRED" can opener.
1st off I love your videos! You get extremely descriptive on every topic you cover and it's perfect. Can't even begin to describe the number of times it's helped me too. Most underrated kitchen tool, I would say is my small Swiss army knife. It fits everywhere and I've used it for hundreds of uses. Even the day I got my pairing knife stolen. And or needed to sharpen my mandoline slicer, but didn't have a screwdriver. It's a big life saver.
I'm in school for film and cook pretty casually so I'll literally never need half of this stuff. Your gear videos are so good and explain things so well, I always come back. Another awesome videos as usual!
I finally got my Mise bag today! Itâs even more compact than I envisioned, but still fits everything I use on the day-to-day. đđ»đđ»đđ»
My most underrated kitchen tool hands down has to be the sharpie without it you have no idea when something was prepped or by whom the item was prepped. Love your videos dude keep killing it!
An underrated kitchen utensil that comes to mind is a nice pair of fish boning tweezers. You donât think of them much until you need them. But when you do, they are indispensable-especially at a fish station.
Just found your channel today. Can't get enough.
Good work Justin. I love your videos man. Keep them comingâđ
Dude. Bench scrapers. So handy I feel like I should be carrying one with me everywhere I go. Now I definitely need to play around with a spoonula. Great vid, thanks man.
I think the dough cutter is the most underrated kitchen utensil. I work as a pizza cook and find it to be the biggest muti tasker. It helps to keep the flour on the spreading station confined to that area, allows you to cut apart dough that has proved to much and would be a nightmare to pull apart, and most importantly if a pizza gets too well done you can use it to scrape off the blacken bits and save the pie. Great video as always, Keep it up!
As always your videos are awesome!!
Most underrated utensil - themapen - picked an orange coloured one up for ÂŁ30 before Xmas and have been using everyday since! For some reason orange kitchen utensils are a lot cheaper than other colours on Amazon, thats why half of my kit is orange. Great video as always Justin
That apron is fire!!!
That a dope apron, my favorite underrated tool is my slanted spoon using for mixing, plating, serving, portioning and to eat with love it and all my other spoon always have them on hand
Justin Khanna from chef toys good deal on it love going there and getting small tools and good selection of almost everything a cook will need
For me, there's a couple of underrated kitchen utensils that I've come to really appreciate over the years. First off, a pocket knife. I currently carry around a Gerber Remix folding blade. I use it mainly for opening and tearing down boxes. What I've noticed working in a hotel restaurant, the skill level of employees around varies. I've had instances where guys will not think twice about using kitchen knives to tear into a cardboard box or rip open bags. A safer and a more practical solution to most common occurrence. A (good) sharpie and roll of blue tape is a must. I always carry around my Gray Kunz spoon, OXO cake tester, and my Wusthof micro kitchen shear. I'm also fortunate enough that I am able to keep my tools secure in the kitchen that I work in so I don't have to carry a knife kit to and fro home. I'm definitely in that category of guys who have a tool (even a knife) for almost every job in the kitchen. đŹ
Great video man!!
My 240mm Kohetsu AS gyuto. It can remove silverskin easily, slice raw proteins, skin salmon fillets and can slice, dice n' chop like no other. Love that thing
I'm a home cook plus all the good ones are taken so I'm gonna go with my Amazon echo. I can set multiple timers ask for unit conversions and play some music all at the same time.
Mine would have to be an exacto knife for opening boxes/packages, makes life a lot easier when you come in and you just got a whole weeks worth of products
measuring spoons! no one carries them except me. they always get passed around in the shared kitchen tool area. they always come in super clutch during prep when you go into dry storage and forget measuring cups
like for sauces that need sugar, salt, old bay. for baking i always weigh it but for sauces just the spoon.
I work at Proxi Chicago and my most underrated tool has to be tornea knife it just comes in clutch so many times
My most underrated kitchen utensils would have to be... my hands. Perfect for making pasta, knife handling, and showing a ball of dough some lovinâ. đ
I keep a double sided strop in my roll at all times. I feel it just takes my knifes edge yo the next level đđ„đȘđŻ
@@justinkhanna Not a professional chef, but I use one made by Rycky Tran (Burrfection). One side is bare pressed buffalo. The other is standard leather with Jeweler's Rouge. If you don't NEED to take metal off the edge with a ceramic rod, why take it?
Most under rated kitchen utensil for me is the mind... How can we continue to learn recipes and store them in our heads and taste buds. Would be a cool podcast to talk about how to pick up tricks to remember recipes.
Bench scrapper! Use mine all the time!
My most under rated utensil ? hmmmmm, the spatula. For years I ignored it in the kitchen but now it is my go to tool when I cook. Excited to see what GIR has to offer. Awesome video ! That apron tho... LIT AF!
The most underrated kitchen utensil has to be a fish slice or turner Brilliant when you trying to pick something delicate up
Love your videos!! Keep them up. Mine would have to be a Victorianox Swiss army knife. Is really good to keep on you if you need a screw driver to do a quick fix and good to open packets with if you can't use your big knife. Plus duck tape can come in handy. They make a great combo :)
The smallest winco offset spatula & Kuhn peeler from my knife kit. Canât tell you how
Many times those two items have saved my behind while prepping the station for service.
Nice gear. Iâve been a chef for 25 years and 99.9 percent of my knife work is done with a 8â wustof culinar ikon chef knife. I also have a Shun 8â chef knife. Iâll use one or the other. Iâve been using a messermiester knife bag for about 15 years,itâs like a suit case for knifes with the ability to carry an ungodly amount of tools. It just sits on the bottom shelf of my prep table. But I have been considering down sizing. The down fall of that bag or suitcase or mine is the amount of debris it collects. Constantly giving it a scrub down which isnât a easy task.
I just bought the Mac ceramic honing steel and it works great in between sharpening sessions. I also finish sharpening my knives with a 6000 grit stone which leaves a mirror polish on the edge. The only thing that bothers me about the rod is that it would dull the mirror finish of the edge.
Hi justin, I love what you are doing, keep it up, by the way, Im a chef too, I wish I can make videos like you do.
Under-rated kitchen utensil is either a bench scrape or a kuhn rikon pairing knife with a sheath. they both live in my pocket so its super accessible
love ur channel !!!!!
My most underrated tool would be a pocket knife. Especially a sturdy one that you dont mind getting dinged up so you can keep your good knifes chip free.
Justin Khanna thanks for the response chef! You are a huge inspiration for me, keep up the good content! Btw the book grit was a great recommendation.
Most underrated utensil I carry? I picked up an RV can opener. Itâs super tiny, works great for tomato paste cans AND they have a bottle opener on it which is great when you gotta open big bottles of shoyu or ponzu, black vinegar, etc. and at around $2 I picked up a few and gave some to fellow chef friends. Itâs stupid convienient.
bench scrapper for sure, the sturdy metals one where u scrape off roasted chicken bits on ur pan for stock
I like the crab tool at crab shack. It has so many uses, is small so packs easy. Only down side only comes in yellow :((
The most under rated tool in my kitchen, probably my 9cm utility knife, does everything my petty and pairing does but just a little bit easier on my massive hands. Also underrated is spare hair ties, never know when ones going to break on you.
Justin Khanna just a old school wusthof classic utility
most underrated kitchen essential in my bag: ZESTER!!!!! i can't begin to tell you the times when I was working grill, and somebody asks me if I have a zester so they can use it in salad dressings or lime aoili lol
Man youâre the homie letting everyone use your tools. Everywhere Iâve worked people are super stingy with their knives, honing rods, etc. That makes sense considering though, Iâve heard many a story of a knife getting stolen from work.
Most underrated kitchen utensil has got to be a fish spat. And this was another great Video
I have 4 different simple wincos that I have bent in a bunch of different angels
Currently ioshen knife roll (would like to update to a chrome industries or a boldric) I o shen knifes - paring, oriental slicer, bread knife, filleting knife and santoku.... Ox peeler, some tweezers off amazon, vogue spatula and bench scraper and mandolin..... Pens and sharpies are so important, love a pen shop... Also have a lighter handy to light gas tops ect
Home cook from australia :) i cant wait for your next video! Can you do a video comparing Japanese knives and western knives please! :) and what your thought about them
It's racial profiling.
Hey Justin, I'm currently in culinary school and I use everything in my knife bag. There is nothing I don't use.
That apron looks fire on you đđœ!!! And personally the microplane is a hero, the amount of times a chef needs a microplane to shave some truffles is baffling, but hey atleast I get a good letter of rec and some truffle bits in the end of the day đ! Keep up the vids, and hopefully you come by the West coast some time!
Universal measuring spoon and a kitchen timer. Makes my work a bit easy
Justin Khanna yes it is that adjustable spoon. I have question why do prefer using a sujihiki as your main chefs knife?
Man! what a passionate Video! This guy loves what he does!! Spoonulas rule!! Question: None of my chefs ever had gear! Was there something wrong with them?
Quite a bit actually! I was always a bit scared by the ones that carried a lot of knives! I was especially nice to them! What if they get pissed and decide to stab me! Just kidding! Thank you for the great content man! Love your energy!
I'm not sure if this counts, but having a Bain to organize my tools/station is essential for #TSD. Also side towels, cherished like cigarettes in prison.
OMG I have the same spoon from Can Roca :D
Exacto knives, rulers or some sort of straight edge, butchers twine, cheesecloth, icing spatulas
For sure my most underrated utensil has to be my spoons I do not know why but know one in my class has any and always asks for my quenelle spoon...
Justin Khanna I keep telling then I've actually convinced some to get there own. THANK GOODNESSđ
My Chinese cleaver. It's my go to knife for almost all knife jobs.
Love the videos. I would have to say a cake tester. Check cakes, breads, fish, steaks or other meats, vegetables m, etc
My boning knife, cleaning an butchering meet is so easy with it!
My Enso HD 6 Inch, looks beautiful and gets the job done.
Crazy to say but it's gotta be my sharpies lol. They always come in clutch when a homie or I need it haha.
My bread knife is my most underrated kitchen utensil
h iJustin, love what u doing. most under-rated i guess is JoiceChan scissors!!!!! keep going doode, wish to win this apron ))))
A fork! Picking up thinly sliced things like pickled onions, makes placing them quick and neat
Justin Khanna yes, as opposed to tweezers. You said underrated...no one talks about using forks on the line, theyâre handy
birds beak for shrimp deveining though!
Cool vid.
the most under rated "kitchen tool" is a sharpie because when ever you nee one theres not one to be found and a pocket knife comes in handy to open boxes, cut tape and so many other things.
Another great video. Why do you prefer a slicer for your nice bag instead if a traditional chef knife?
My most underrated tools I have in my kit at the moment would have to be my offset palette, my 15 cm truecooks offset tweezers, my 18-10 spoon & last but not least my 6-in shun utility knife. I use all these things on a day to day basis and feel my self reaching for them all the time and when I do not have them to use for some reason it just feels unnatural.
hmmmm most under-rated tool? insulated gloves under vinyl gloves. I love working BBQ and these are so useful! throw them on under my gloves and i can break down a pork shoulder/handle a brisket in no time!
Most underated is my Superfeet insoles for my shoes. My job makes us use Shoes for Crews, and their crappy shoes will kill your feet after an 8 to 12 hour shift. Best 40 bucks ever spent. Close second is my compression socks. #takecareofyourdamnfeet.
Takeda NAS Kogatana paring knife... Its like the best paring knife to clean veggies! worth the price but also recommend a basic victorinox one
badass enough to have the nicest apron ever? ;)
who makes the petty that you show in this video, the one that replaces the other knives? ive been looking for a chunkier petty and that one looks dope.
Do your knuckles not hit the board while using the Nenox for general purpose use?
My cherry pitter. I laughed when I got it but there is really no other way.
Great video as usual -- my goto tool is my KA Bench Knife. Simple and oh so useful!
Gimme those socks! Also, my most underrated tool are the rags I keep hidden BECAUSE SCOUNDRELS ALWAYS STEAL MINE JEEZE
Are you using your slicer for chef knife tasks?
Have you seen the new "chrome" knife roll? They make bike messenger / camera bags, in sf, collab with with chris constentino? Of cockscomb, just got mine, super nice, great design , might have to make a video??đ€ I had the same blodric previously (same one from your other video) a worthy upgrade , they also offset the Handle so you can carry it flat with the weight of the knife handles being dominant
Fun story, a few years ago I emailed H&B and Chrome and told them that they should collaborate because I was sick of all the shit rolls out there and I wanted something that was as high quality as both of their products. Now they are both making their own and both look to be pretty killer.
Is the Nenox knife worth it? I am a culinary student looking to build my knife set.
So all in all do you feel like it's worth the 300?
Hey bro you still using the nenox? Was thinking of getting a petty/utility. What kind of steel is it?
i dont understand, how do you chop with a knife whose heel is lower than your fingers on the board?
Hey I just wanna know one thing, what is the brand of cake tester on this video I needs one
Is there a 2019 updated video?
Best Knife Roll it is!
www.etsy.com/listing/702252051/17-heavy-duty-knife-roll-bag-for-master
Hey, can you elaborate on your hatred for birds beak tweezers? I am not partial to them either, but Iâd like to hear your thoughts.
Can you suggest a starter chef knife? I mainly use it for steak. Raw steak and cooked steak. I do also cut veggies but not as much as steak. Thanks
Check out my review on the Victorinox Fibrox Pro line! Super affordable and will hopefully serve you well đ
Your scissors's brand is : Zhang Xiao Quan - èłŹć°æł
Hey where are you at in the PNW??
Do they still make this bag.?
It is a pen. By the way I saw that Grant Achatz uses a offset tweezer what do you think about that?
Justin Khanna just checked out his instagram. Yeah you are right.
Bruh just got the black leather boldric roll red stitching...so fire đ€
www.cutleryandmore.com/boldric/leather-knife-bag-p135647?cam=SAVE20&gclid=Cj0KCQiAieTUBRCaARIsAHeLDCRPF-qKSN_JDr8-ezd_Z1lkcS91L8XKVqF15DYlr-nlyB7bZrf1y8QaApqBEALw_wcB
Justin Khanna I'm getting it custom embroidered as well got to add flair
I've got the brown
Anyone know who sells the mise bag now? Itâs out of stock EVERYWHERE
Did you ever find out the manufacturer of your kitchen shears?
Zhang Xiaoquan - Precision Shears
What's the name of the 3 piece potato peeler you have? I'm trying to get some through Amazon
Thanks I appreciate the help
Why no birds beak tweezers?
Sakon 150cm Petty, use this knife everyday. Its surgical
Rod Demicoli wow.. 150cm Petty ist actually times longer than a chefâs Knife.
Are chef's knives not used as commonly in the industry as they seem to be?
They dont' make this bag anymore do they :( I found out about it way too late.
Yeah it's rough - maybe they'll bring it back!
where to buy it!!
Ugh no longer...
I mean the black one on the cover image, dawg
4:52 a wild tk appears
Was anybody able to identify the shears?
