- A critical call does not go as planned in a tight 3 game Bronze Medal match between Ben Johns/Collin Johns & Matt Wright/Riley Newman at the USA Margaritaville Pickleball National Championships.

No way Riley should expect Matt to get that middle ball. Riley made the poor hit across and let CJ react so quickly so R should have been at the ready to react with his right forehand in middle.
What everyone fails to realize about the last point being great is the context around it. This is match point on a back and forth emotional barn burner, where both teams showed they could be successful in aggressive hands battles. The fact that the Johns played it so slow was brilliant, because all the pressure was on Wright/Newman to win the point, and the hardest thing to do under pressure is hit a slow perfect dink. Anyone can win a hands battle with a fluke. Is it boring out of context? Yes. But for those watching in person, I guarantee they were on the edge of their seats as the point developed.

@createmitch It was interesting to see in the last point (and maybe the match) that the Johns were playing middle so much. Odd time outwards (maybe not wanting to allow an ATP) but it was really shown in the last point they were dinking middle middle. It sure forced the returns to come back more straight. Any strategy that I am missing in this context?
I believe the Johns brothers dink middle to Riley’s forehand as they seem to think it’s less dangerous than his backhand.
Would disagree that the last point is the best championship point. Dinks we’re intense but not a good finish at all.
I agree with you. A 98-stroke rally (which is amazing in itself!), very well played, but with an anticlimactic finish. A fine example, however, of patience and strategy.

another question is why he did a step at the kitchen before ball was landed/bounced ?? This should be against the rules too . What if the ball would have bounced outside the kitchen ?
Newman may need contacts or something and ofc Matt loses his patience at the end. Never really like Matt kind of seems like an ass.
Matt is the kind of guy who thinks he is Alpha playing pickleball "childlike" game. Cant believe they considered this as National Championship Sports, organizers might be making great amount of money from stupid sponsors.

I know that in tennis, you don't get to call what happens on the other side of the court. Whether it's your opponent touching the ball, or calling your own shot in or out as it is landing on your opponents court. Don't know if the rules of pickleball address that or not.
Petson nearest to the event (ball in or out, stepping in the kitchen, etc has the call. If teammates on the side closest to the event disagree, point goes to the other side.
Not true. In professional tennis, you can stop the point and challenge a call made by the official on the other side of the net. Then the computer simulation (Shot-Spot or whatever brand they use) makes the call. I assume that's what they did here. If not, and it was Ben Johns himself who made the call, then it was the same as tennis. If you stop the point and it's not your call, the other team gets the point if they disagree with you. You see this on a double bounce point. People will stop the point saying the person on the other side hit the ball on two bounces....but it's not their call. It's the call of the person who actually hit the ball. If the "hitter" says he got it on one bounce, the point is over and he wins the point. Riley Newman had no right to stop the point, same as tennis. But he did....hoping to get the call, which he didn't. Basically the same rule as tennis. In pickle ball, though you ARE allowed to call a foot fault on the other team on the serve or at the kitchen line, but in tennis, you are allowed to make a foot fault call on the other team on the serve.
I'm new to the sport and have never played. Can someone explain to me why they stay so close to the net and hit drop shots close to the net? As opposed to tennis where they stay closer to the baseline and rarely hit dropshots
The ball used for pickleball is essentially a wiffle ball so it won't go as fast as a tennis ball. Combined with the fact that you play on such a small court and if you're playing doubles you can almost cover the whole court with both people standing at the kitchen line (the line outside the no-volley zone by the net). It's more advantageous for you and your partner to be at the kitchen line. Because of that, both teams have to hit shots that the other team cannot just smash back. Generally this means either dinks or drop shots that land in the no-volley zone, well aimed shots into empty spaces where opponents aren't covering, or lobs over the opponents. Both teams dink back and forth until they think they see an opening, either a bad shot by the opponent they can speed up and hit harder back or the opponents have shifted while hitting a ball creating an opening.

Loved the video but have to disagree on the last point. It was just a ton of super safe dinks with a single speed up that went long. Out of all the points you showed, this one by far was the least interesting to watch.
Relative to the (ultimately ill-timed and off-target) attack they were safe but there weren't a lot of good attack chances in there due to the quality. And there was a fair bit of pressure (pushing, mixing targets) applied so it's boring to watch but more interesting the more you understand the attempts to set up attack opportunities, imo.
It felt like a SNL sketch to me.

When was this sport created?
As a novice player, what makes the match point a good point? Is it just that it’s long?
It seems like both sides were playing very safe and not using any sharp tactics to force much error. Is there some analysis that would help me understand what makes that rally stand out?
it is the actually the downside of pickleball as a spectator sport - the "dink war" is boring. and yes, both sides were gun shy to make an offensive shot, resulting in the huge dink count.

Calling a suspenseful 98 shot rally "boring" on game point? Cm'on! Who are you kidding? I've been watching pickleball for years and never saw a rally this long... It was like a hole in one!
I don't think they were being hesitant or playing it safe at all. All four of the players out there were looking for even the smallest of openings to speed up the ball and get the point, but the dinks were all very low to the net and unattackable. That is what makes it an incredible point. Somewhat less than amazing to watch, but a great show of superb dinking and patience. The end is proof of that. Matt finally lost patience and tried to hit a winner when the opportunity was not really there. This type of point is rare because even at the top level of pickleball, hitting that many unattackable shots in a row is very very hard.
You have to play the sport to understand. Being consistent at the dink game is not as easy as it looks. Ball come at you with spin and varying amounts of height and speed, and do not bounce high off the ground. The opponents move you around, in and out, and back and forth, to open up lanes for attacking. If you hit the ball just a little too high or too deep on any shot, especially at this level, you are going to get blasted quickly. Sometimes players will flick a fast shot right at you and you don't have time to get out of the way. When nerves are involved, it's even tougher. Both teams played this point fairly conservatively, but it could have exploded at any second.....hence the intense attention of the fans....
I think what we couldn't see was how low the ball was being kept over the net. It wasn't attackable. I wish they also had a side profile of the last point. The ending showed the patience was at an end, hit a ball that was too low hoping the topspin would keep it in or hit someone. So it's wasn't that it was playing it safe, it was waiting for a mistake so they could attack.
For those of us not familiar with the rules, perhaps edit the video to contain the rules regarding calling such an event. We know players must call their own lines, but must players also make the call if they believe an opponent has contacted the ball in some illegal way, or is that the domain of the refs?
IOW, regardless of the fact that Riley was wrong, was he at least acting in accordance with the rules by stopping play and making such a call?
Yes but similar to an out call, if you make the wrong call it’s not a redo. You either lose the serve or the other team gets a point.
I don't think you are allowed to stop play to make a call, wrong or right. But most refs really don't do a very good job when it comes to the fine details of the rules; Lea J.'s saying the call out was a hinder. Ref made a lousy call.
Next year a player from each team will use Rock Paper Scissors to settle any disputed calls to avoid the possibility of violence breaking out over disputed calls. Replay will not, I repeat, replay will never be used! Also, Margaritaville is losing this tournament because over half of the 17 fans in attendance were drunk on Margaritas and storming the court using violence to settle this call was only avoided due to the bravery of 2 janitors high on extremely strong weed!
In marches with a referee, fault calls are made by the referee, not the players. In non refereed matches, the only faults a player can call against their opponent are NVZ faults and service foot faults. If the opponent accepts your call, then they lose the rally. If they disagree, then the rally will be replayed. Rules 13.D.1.c. & 13.D.1.d.
@@stanbrown4837 since this was a refereed match, and a player stopped play to make a fault call that he was apparently not allowed to make, what do the rules state that the penalty should be?
Pickleball is like tennis or table tennis but without the extreme skill and physicalty of these sports?

Pickleball is less technical than Table Tennis, which means it is accessible to more people. To be decent at Table Tennis, it requires a lot of specific technical skills.
It's not as physically demanding as Tennis, which again, means it is more accessible to more people. I haven't played tennis, so I can't speak to the technical skills, but it seems that pickleball is similar to tennis in that regard.
The green area is known as the Non-Volley Zone or casually the Kitchen. You can step into the kitchen at any time, but cannot strike the ball until after it lands on the ground on your side. If you notice, the ball lands on the ground before he hits it, so it is legal for him to step into the kitchen and hit the ball.
Watch one video, a boring one to boot, and you're an expert. You don't even know the rules. I thought Cricket was boring, until I learned the rules, then it was great. Now tennis is a boring sport like baseball.

Riley is a very hard partner to play with I believe. He gets easily upset with his partner, calls time outs by just dropping this paddle without even asking his partner.
One can see that he has a lot of negative energy on the court when things are not going their way
When you are afraid of losing, you make calls like the bad one he made here. You are so hoping to win a point that you assume you won one when you didn't.

This was interesting to watch, but i honestly don't see the appeal to pickelball. Tennis is much more exciting and the soft hits and slow play make it feel almost like they don't want to win a point. i don't get it. Good video tho :D
Try it and see. I play both sports, and ping pong. they're all fun...each has its charm. Pickleball is the best social sport by far. Tennis is second. Ping pong has the quickest reactions, pickle ball is second. Tennis is the toughest workout. The other two are tied.

Most of us who play may enjoy watching the pro matches, but it's not even close to the most important thing for us. Hiking and backpacking, (for examples) have no pro sports activities, and a host of other sports have very little pro viewership, but do you think people are quitting those? Not every sport needs to be all about the pros.

It was a great dinking battle and a fine example of strategy and patience (except, that is, for Matt's botched speed up).
In front of a massive crowd of 17 screaming fans! Ok, some of them were stadium workers but still skys the limit for this sport.
This sport is already hurting live fishing tournament watching and watching paint dry has seen a dip in viewership also.
Discussions are underway to actually use pickles as the ball next year and fans are truly excited....
Nobody was playing to win on that last point. Both teams were playing it safe. That last shot was the only one where a team took a chance.

That last point was incredibly boring and hard to watch
A no-hitter is incredibly boring for people who aren't baseball fans/players, too. A 98 hit rallies unheard of in Pickelball. The longest pro points I've seen are about 60 shots, but they usually have lots of smashes and great gets mixed in with dinks. This point was nerve wracking because it was match point, the score was close, and each team was daring the other to go for it, but had to hit safe dink after safe dink, which is not easy. There is a ping pong video online where two pro women have a 189 point rally. The longest pro rally with women in tennis was over 600 balls! It took 29 minutes! The longest men's rally was 86 shots between Bjorn Borg and Guillermo Vilas in the French Open final. So this pickle ball point was not unprecedented in racquet sports. Badminton alos has some long rallies doubles...I've seen over 80 shots in a pro match online. I don't know what the record is.

The sport is for everybody. There are two former top 12 USTA players on the pickle ball tour now. (Jack Sock and Sam Querrey) The four players above are all better than them. The sport is easier to learn than tennis, about the same as ping pong......but mastering it is a different problem

This dinking will kill any momentum this sport is getting and prevent growth. A reasonable rule change to keep they games exciting is a maximum of 3 consecutive shots permitted in kitchen.

Wow, I've never played pickleball but I see why tennis players easily win. This is National Championships? No split step. Holding racquet by your side instead of ready for the incoming ball. This is crazy lazy. A lot of those missed balls was because they weren't even trying to be ready for it.

@@philosophiabme ):41 is the first example - 0:50 is very clear - in both cases - he may or may not be above the waist - but VERY clear the top of the paddle is above the wrist, and its not even close! Its his standard serve. It will be interesting to see going forward if opponents start calling him on it! There is a very simple solution - he can go to a drop serve - then all of those issues go away!
