Major Controversy at the Hertz PPA Championships

  • Salome Devidze has been in the lime light of Pickleball recently for all the wrong reasons.
Her last several tournaments have led to several controversial matches regarding extremely close line calls. There have even been matches this year where opposing players have requested up to 5 or more refs to cover each line. She is a great player, but some of these calls and the reputation she is getting on tour isn't the best look.
Let me know your thought on this player and your take on the line calls.
I hope you enjoy the video!

I think the days of players making their own line calls are numbered. It was cool while it lasted, but there's getting to be too much money at stake to trust people who are making their living at the sport to call balls in that are questionable.

I don’t feel it’s about honesty. I’m sure you play the game and when you were trying to strike a ball and determine if it’s a half inch one way or the other it’s extremely difficult. It’s just a poor system that needs to be fixed as the sport gains more equity.

@@EricS939 For sure, most incorrect calls are seen the way they are called, and are a mistake rather than a lie. It seems that one solution is to use something like the mechanisms sold by inout/tennis. While it might be a bit of a problem since at least for now, you have to put the machine on a tripod 2-4 feet from the outside lines. This kind of kills the ATP, but it avoids the drama of line calls in major money tournaments. It seems that the APP and/or PPA can afford the approximate $600 for two mechanisms which are needed for doubles matches. Supposedly, you only need one for singles matches. Just a thought.

One hting they can do is have a roving umpire who only overrules if he is asked. For instance, a team calls a ball out, and the other team disagrees. Professional PB is a joke. It tries sooo hard to portray itself as "professional" but in the areas that matter it falls way short. Several years ago before the PB explosion of billionaires and bigger purses it was always taught that no one should make a line call other than the player closest to the ball. This was based on all the obvious reasons. Now you have judges making calls from across the court and using replays of the same camera angles that they show on TV which are essentially useless for that purpose. Until the "billionaires" are willing to install the cyclops system used in tennis, line calls will have no integrity whatsoever. PB will continue to be "amatuer hour" whether it's on the Tennis Channel or not.

I play for fun with a group of mostly seniors and people make HORRIBLE calls all the time. Especially on baseline shots when the player is looking straight down at the ball. They call all these shots out, when an observer from off the court sees that they are clearly in. Tennis has a good way to deal with this. "When in doubt, the ball is IN" Or "99% OUT is 100% IN" PIckleball changed the definition of out and in. When I first started playing, I was told that you judge in or out based on the center of the ball. Now the rule is "if you can SEE a piece of the color next to the white line, it's out". Now that is kind of weird, because it has a lot to do with your perspective. From one angle, you might be able to see a slice of the color, but form another angle, you can't. Back in the McEnroe-Connors era, they used to use volunteers form the crowd to call lines sometimes! There weren't full time professionally trained line callers! They blew a LOT of calls. Eventually, intimidating the lines people became part of the game. Ilie Nastase was the chief culpritt here, then Connors, then Mac, who was actually quite polite when he started. But even trained umpires make horrible calls, and the chir umpires made horrible overrules that cost players matches.....Serena Williams had a match robbed form her in the semifinals of the US Open, against Jennifer Capriati, with four bad calls/overrules Then tennis introduced the challenge system, where a computer compiles 12 different camera images and makes the call. It really cuts down on arguments, which takes away some drama, but is more fair. I think you will find that line callers won't help. The players actually make better calls than the line judges, because they are more intensely involved. All the calls in this match were very very close, and it's understandable how they could go either way.

@Gavin Shuell You're sure you're not anti-black?. I'm not black. And what I said about Serena and changing the to the challenge system after she was robbed is true. She was remarkably controlled during that bout of pure highway robbery by a female official who had no business being in the chair at that time, but was promoted because the regular chair umpires had been suspended for selling their comp tickets at the Olympics. Serena was not at her best when she got called for the questionable foot fault, a point away from match point. But this has nothing to do with what I said....here's the incident I'm talking about: czcams.com/video/F4mGqwA7cCM/video.html when you see how she was robbed here, it helps you understand how she got so upset when she got called for that foot fault.

Monica Seles, also a blonde, was the first to do it. It's part of the game now, and is perfectly accepted. Everyone does it to some degree. I'm not crazy about it, but blame the ones who make the rules, not the players. Serena is a drama queen, to be sure, but if you actually look at the video I sent (it's not long), you will see how she was robbed at a very big match as very few players were ever robbed...and her behavior was amazingly under control. Whether she is actually seeing the ball the way she calls it or not, it is often not the right call and the refs should overturn any they think is called wrong. Video play proves that even Refs and line judges make bad calls when it's that close. I guess they're screwing the players too. 🙄 It's once they started the pissing contest that it went badly, and both were responsible for that. That's the cost of cutting it so close without a Challenge option and Replay feature.

This sport must be banned it won't lasts long, even if it implements line challenge. This sport has no physical ability.

The consensus among pro tennis players who play pickleball is that singles pickleball is more intense and more physically demanding than singles tennis (of course ignoring the sheer time length of a tennis game).
