my late Grandfather, Aunt and late Uncle have all played with Willie Lang prior to coming to Australia in 1949. All three were/are cornet players! I heard many stories growing up! brilliant to hear the man!

My father used to talk about Willie Lang. Having listened to this, I know why.

I love listening to these old recordings, particularly of legendary soloists such as Willie Lang. Fantastic playing!

Astonishing, especially when you consider that this was pre-tape. No overdubs or drop ins or taking parts of different takes & putting them together afterwards. Everything had to be done in one take and a mistake meant the whole thing had to be done again from the beginning.

Great to hear Jenny Wren - written as a tribute to his daughter by Mr Roland Davis, my tutor at Amington Band in 1960 . Conducted Amington in the British Open in 1929 and still conducting the band up to 1962. We had the original handwritten manuscript in the library for many years. Not sure if it's there now.

Did you know he was also a fully time served stone mason? Talented man. In the book Labour and Love Willie describes how he actually started off at Dyke playing No 2 to the great Harold Jackson (who later became principal trumpet of the formidable Philharmonia Orchestra under such luminaries as Toscaninni, Furtwangler and Karajan). After Dyke Willie went to the Halle Orchestra before spending a long tenure at the LSO as co-principal sharing the principal trumpet duties with Howard Snell. I think Willie retired around 1982.

I think the players of this vintage played with more elan and vigour. perhaps it's because the weren't obsessed with large bore instruments and huge mouthpieces like some are today , KosiKups and BnH Imperials or Besson Class A were good enough for them

Besson Class A from around then was a beautiful cornet . Free flowing, razor sharp valves and not a drop of that new fangled valve oil in sight.

I've played on a Kosikup soprano cornet mouthpiece since 1977 . Wouldn't swap it for anything !

Yes they were cornets. The modern LB Sovereign has no edge. It sounds like a flugel.

It wasn't very forgiving. You either got it right. Or not. I never owned one but all the old guys had them. Occasionally they let me play one. Here, have another octave.

Just noticed the tenure of the bandmaster 1912 -1948 ie 46 years. Amazing.
